  • We recently visited the Booker T. Washington National Monument in Hardy, Virginia. This site commemorates the birthplace of a boy who would start life enslaved, but grow up to be an author, educator, speaker, and civil rights leader in the decades following the abolition of slavery in the United States. Along the way, we learn about his life both as a child slave and later as an acclaimed leader and influencer. This monument was opened on the 100th anniversary of Washington's birth in April 1956. Thanks for joining us as we travel through history.

This is a must visit for me! I did drop in for a second and visit his home in West Virginia (nothing was open) and have been down to Tuskegee. Can’t believe the distances he would walk!

I didn't even know this existed, what a fabulous place. To still have spirit after being a slave is beyond comprehension and so incredible. I love how much he valued education. What an amazing human being. So inspirational. Thank you for sharing. I will look for 'Up From Slavery'.

This was a really well-done video! It packed a lot of information into a short amount of time, but it was still easy to follow. Especially interesting to see the recreation of the buildings and imagine Booker T. Washington's life there. Thanks for sharing this piece of history!👌👍

Great tour, thank you. We lived very close to this while Mark was working at nearby Appomattox Courthouse but I was so late in my pregnancy and was in bed mostly so we didn’t get to go see it. I’d love to stop by sometime.

Wow I never knew about this. I heard the name but I honestly didn’t know too much about him. Pretty powerful stuff especially reading behind his childhood bust at 1:05 born in slavery he did more with his life than most people who were born free.

🤣🤣 Capitalism and Federal park land don't always go hand in hand, Alice and Jack! 😁😁We have a few coming up before to long too. We enjoyed the Booker T Washington monument tour. It was a sad part of our history. The picture of the man beaton was appalling! I believe by the time he went to West Virginia it would have been a little more friendly to people of color. Fun to see how folks would have lived back then. Looks like a fun place to visit and we loved coming along with you both.

I have never heard of this National Monument. I wonder if the WWE wrestler Booker T. Got his name after this person. Love learning things on RUclips. You guys are great storytellers. Had to be so tough to go through the transition.
