It's uncanny how Mark explains the things that I have questions on right when I need answers. Thanks Adorama for Mark Wallace!

One word of advise even when you are a beginner. You should always shoot in RAW and not JPEG. Leave your Picture Styles in a neutral setting both for stills and video. RAW has information that is not compressed like a JPEG. It is best to use post processing to get your final look rather than using your camera.

+dphotos The settings of your picture style is completely irrelevant if you're shooting RAW.

Ewout Honig I know that I always shoot RAW but I also shoot JPEG back up with the Canon 5D Mark lll's and a Fuji XT2. Setting a pictures style can throw your eyes off when shooting. With the Fuji the Velvia picture style will give you a very rich color saturation in your camera LCD and JPEGS. Too me it distorts the colors in the LCD when shooting. I keep them in Standard or Neutral. I believe if you use a picture style while shooting video it will burn that style in your footage and you will lose shadow detail. For video I just use a neutral type setting with low contrast.

Nah - - A choice for JPEG exists for a damn good reason. One situation is when your volume of images is so high that it becomes entirely impractical to use RAW. My opinion is that RAW is just for the perfectionists, and for people who happen to have very high paying jobs doing professional photography. Having the attitude that JPEG is for nothing but snapshots makes it too damn easy to not take control even when you can do so quite easily. Eventually, your level of perfection with JPEGS can increase to the point that a vast majority of images are more than acceptable.

If you are a beginner, you are probably not doing post processing

If you use Canon software (as with Nikon Picture Controls) you can shoot in RAW and maintain the Picture Style - best of both worlds.

very informative. I wonder if we increase the sharpness to the highest level, will the 1080p video output will have look like 4k?

No. Artificial sharpening is not the same as resolution sharpness

With Canons new profile you have more adjustments in sharpness.
    Mimic; Kodachrome (25)
Off the Standard profile, then press the Info button. Here’s what I do:
    Sharpness strength: -2
    Sharpness Fineness: +2
    Sharpness threshold: +2
    Contrast: -1
    Saturation: +1
    Color tone: +1
    This combination does the following:
Lessens the sharpness and smooths out skin a bit.
Dials down the contrast slightly to make the photo look less digital.
Saturates the color a tad to emulate well exposed and processed film.
Makes skin tones a bit more yellow than red: this balances the extra saturation.

I like your style Mark and pay attention to what you have to say. In this video, I realise it's from 2013, you stated that the picture style setting wont work on RAW. However, I have a basic canon set to shoot RAW and the picture style i compared with are the default monochrome and copying that into user setting 1 but cranking up sharpness and contrast plus applying yellow filter effect - i find there is a difference.

Thank you Mark for the Monochrome setting. I shoot RAW and use Lightroom so these settings do not work.

ok i shoot in RAW and as an experiment i shot on a canon (.CR2 file) with picture styles turned up full on custom. I loaded said .CR2 file into 3rd party software and low and behold it still HAD all the adjustments the camera made !!! DEEP colours, HIGH contrast etc. When i loaded it into camera raw as you all point out all adjustments gone. So......if i want to display RAW on my tv/projector i just load up 3rd party software and use its slideshow option. The pics look really good with no need for me to edit in camera raw, unless i'm doing it for someone else of course.

Mark, after importing a style to my 5d iii I see it and can choose while in the regular states (M, Av,Tv) however when shifting to C1 C2 Or C3 (customer functions) the menu shows only the standard picture styles).
Do. You know why and how to overcome it?

  • @NoName-jq7tj

Does it really matter these picture styles when shooting in Raw only. You can edit these afterwards I would think.

When you have bought an automatic bread/cake maker, do you just kneed dough with it and then subscribe to Adobe to use their "oven" to bake bread/cake?
IMHO RAW ONLY shooters are NOT EXPERTS or deceivers (to profit from promoting more expensive cameras, media and software).
JPEG = Joint Photographic Experts Group so RAW ONLY shooters are people who lack "expertise" - can't do things right the first time.

I used to shoot jpeg only. Then I started using RAW and discovered how much more info is preserved like color, tone, saturation, etc. I can't believe how much jpeg destroys so much of the final image. Never again.

Just seen this tutorial, Picture Styles, Episode 147. Nice, but I'm a RAW shooter.
Can someone tell me how to find the episode where Mark Wallace explains about picture Styles in RAW photography. I've try'ed a lot of things like episode 148, Picture styles RAW and so on. THNX ahead. Toin.

RAW is called RAW for a reason. It's the RAW data from your sensor. Setting any 'picture style' or adjustment IN the camera will NOT affect the RAW data from the sensor. The only thing you can do IN camera when shooting RAW is determining your focus, your aperture and shutter speed. That's all. Everything after that is up to your post-production software (Lightroom for example)
Actually, I am surprised that you say that you're a RAW shooter and then ask for "picture styles". Why are you shooting in RAW then?!

Maybe you can help me out with this or someone can help me out. I seen a person taking a photos with a canon rebel t4i i believe, maybe it was a 5 but no more. Here in thailand he was taking pictures of the temples on the boat, i seen him taking pictures and the pictures would change color from the light aim at the temple. He showed me how to do it and i can no figure it out at all, i even have spent hours trying to look it up online and no one has it. So let me give you maybe a better example if you do not understand me quite well. When the picture was taken of having a light in the photo he could get it to change colors, almost like a 3d or maybe a holygram picture. He showed me in setting what to do but i thought i could remember but i didnt. I hope someone doenst think im crazy and can help me out and then can also make a video of it because i have yet to find one on you tube. It looked very awesome and it seemed it was almost like a live picture off apple but instead it changed colors also and it was pretty badass. He just had his camera and nothing else.
