Very Good a little too much on San Elijo but well done.... Lake San Marcos is unique area in North County, one of the first planned communities in USA all underground utilities' (The still have US mail delivery to your front door ) !
I've lived here 35 years (Moved from Santa Barbara)

LSM is unique. Golf cart friendly, 2 courses, and the new-ish restaruant on the lake is awesome (Amalfi)

yo guys u dont acc realize how helpful this is! i'm a student from the UK who wants to come to california for a study year abroad and my first choice is Cali State Uni Monterey Bay, and then I'm torn between Uni of Santa Cruz or Cali State Uni San Marcos for 2nd and 3rd choice (but I'm not sure!!). What would you say for a university student? What area is nicer for a student? I also love the beach so how nice are the nearest beaches?
(sorry for any qs that the vid is already answering i've just started watching it lmao)

San Marcos is pretty chill, lived around north county my whole life, but have spent the most time in San Marcos. The beaches in Carlsbad, Encinitas are super nice, don’t usually go to Oceanside as much but the pier is pretty nice. The area they show in the video (San Elijo) is great as well, rent is pretty high though (depending on your budget). Other than San Elijo there are still nice areas and some to avoid. There’s a good amount of restaurants and places to explore, it is a bit small once you seem to have explored everything, but is still a great and pretty quiet place. I’d recommend it. Great place to live and possibly even study.
