  • Merry Christmas everyone! Hope you're enjoying the holiday season.
    Finally I'll be uploading some performances from their Tour19 The Insulated World live, which this performance is from.
    This song has been requested by both Savanah K and Zetroz *, so here it finally is.
    I wish everyone happy holidays!
    Translation by me.
    Annotations:
    "Are you singing for someone else today too?" - The original lyrics actually say "smiling", which Kyo changed into "singing" in this performance.
    ---------------
    I do not own Dir En Grey or any of their music or performances.
    I translate for fun and wanted to share this translation.
    Thank you for watching!

      Welcome to the Cult :D And yeah and just like Jason says, the songs already hit me quite hard too without even knowing the lyrics~ Kyo is really good in putting emotions across, with the years I often wondered how Diru is one of the few bands that can even with the most negative lyrics can cheer me up in bad times, I guess it´s the emotions that come across so raw and pure that it gives a sense of being understood~ :D

    Beauty, violence, emotions, commitment, joy, darkness...a few words that sum up Dir En Grey, and yet this group is underestimated. I've been listening to Dir En Grey for 20 years, never disappointed. You have to understand the essence of Dir En Grey to love it, it's not just simple music.

      I agree, I believe this is him saying he's growing as an artist. Probably his most positive song ever. He opens by saying he hears the song he hates, probably his own. As it moves forward he realizes that his spring has come, and like the ranunculus he is blossoming at last. At the end he asks the listener 'who are you singing for?' and then says to scream 'im alive'. He's saying it can take time, but that his time has come and he's here for it.
      As a further point, I think the entire album 'the insulated world' is a concept album about being a musician. Followers is about fans, Utafumi mentions The Final and talks about critics, Ningen no Kaburu says "We sew lots of wounds together and finished making this evil lump" like a frankenstein monster, i.e. the band itself. Even the title, 'the insulated world' suggests celebrity life. The fact that it ended with 'screw you, this is about my artistry' is really poignent.

    I wish that I had a modicum of talent musically because it's this emotionally powerful style of metal that I love the most in the genre and I wish I could start a band of my own in addition to being at all talented, which sadly I'm not despite my best efforts. I've been trying my hand at writing lyrics though with a bit more success, but not by much. Oh well, time and practice will tell.

    Hi Kaya, first of all - thank you for your channel

    • @kayachanneru
      @kayachanneru  4 года назад +18

      Hi, thank you! Kyo didn’t change any lyrics other than the ones mentioned in the annotations. After reading your comment I checked out the PV subs again and I think they’re not too different. At least you can tell they’re based on the same source material. Slight differences are very normal when you have two different translators working on a text. Then again, I see the differences you’re talking about and most appear to be based on grammar.
      I am not too interested in "picking apart“ other translations (and I think in this case the official one is rather good), but I want to give you a sense of what might have happened with some lines, so I’ll take one of the first ones as an example here.
      気にもしたことのない詩が嘘の様言葉を殺す
      My translation says
      "The verses I never cared about unbelievably destroy their words"
      The official translation says
      "It never actually crossed my mind - That the song unimaginably kills the words"
      "Unbelievably - Unimaginably" and "destroy - kills" is a good example of two translators picking different words that both work as equivalents.
      The reason I chose "verses", is that the same kanji (詩) is used as in the first line ("The song I hate is playing"), but in the first line you’ll hear him sing "uta", in the one we’re working on right now though the reading is consciously changed to "shi". This clearly makes it go further towards the "poetry" meaning of the kanji, as opposed to the simple "song" meaning it has in the very first line. That is why I think with "verses", you carry the reading distinction into English and less gets lost in translation.
      The official translation does not make that distinction.
      Now, 気にもしたことのない (the "I never cared about - It never actually crossed my mind" part) does connect to "verses" (詩). If it was separate, the の particle wouldn’t make much sense, it would have to be が instead, and the line would probably overall sound more like 気にしたことがない. That is why I don’t think it can be read separately like in the official translation. And I can’t really tell you why they translated it that way. Maybe a sub-on-screen-space issue, which I also come across frequently..?
      As you can see, I can’t really tell you why someone else translates a certain way, but I can explain my own choices. Also, while in many specific cases there is right and wrong, with language it's often hard to find absolutes, I think (that's where the annotations come in, at least I try to make use of them in that way). I translate to the best of my ability and knowledge. :) I hope this example made the process a bit clearer?
      Thank you for watching and commenting, I hope I didn't ramble on for too long. :)

    • @lukaszdrahal3716
      @lukaszdrahal3716 4 года назад +4

      @@kayachanneru Thank you for such a long answer :) and thank you for the thorough explanation.
      It's not like I care about the different words etc, however at first I had a feeling that the meaning of the song is changed now.
      But I think that it was because of my "wrong" interpretation of the original translation. Now I feel like your translation is better because your way of translating exposed some little details that were hidden in the original translation.
      However, what do you think about the meaning of this song? I know, that Kyo's lyrics are hard to interpret, but what do you personally think that this song is about? :)

    • @kayachanneru
      @kayachanneru  4 года назад +6

      To be completely honest, I guess there are only a handful of songs that I have a personal in depth interpretation for. I think there's a lot in Ranunculus, but to me personally I see it as a song about realizing that if you suppress who you really are for other people, you're not really living to begin with.
      There's a blog by someone whose interpretations I sometimes read and always really like (it's all in Japanese but I'll link it to give credit: ameblo.jp/xxxxasukaxxxx/entry-12449345616.html ) and these are a few lines of her paraphrasing the song:
      "At that moment, I realized how I really feel. Afraid of being abandoned by others, I imitated those who seem like they get on smoothly in the world and fooled myself by saying "This way I'll be loved". I was living suppressing myself. [...]
      That you lived up to this day was not to hate others or to be needed by others, is it? Live shouting out what is in your heart, for yourself."
