The amazing bass player, Mark King, is also the lead singer. The fact that he can play those bass parts while remembering all the words and singing on key is unbelieveable.
Same. We were 11 on it's release and it never gets old, I come back to it every now and again and it reminds me how perfect a song it is. There's definitely something about it.
MK is now 65, still touring with Mike, still playing like a demon, still packing out sizeable venues. The last night of the 2023 tour at Hammersmith Apollo was shoulder to shoulder. You *have* to see them live, even if only on RUclips. The current seven-piece line up with brass section is a treat. Incredible, real musicianship.
Agreed, been following the band for 40 years ! Seen them live countless times and can't wait until the end of the year when they are playing the indigo at the O2. Great reaction, more please 🙏
Many thanks for reacting to this 80's hit from Level 42. Always love it, for the same reasons that you said. The backing vocals, the bass, even the guitar that appears at the end. Regards!!
I think you'd love the live version of Lessons in Love from the Princes Trust Rock Gala. You gotta see the lead singer and bass player Mark King live, chewing gum and slapping that bass.
The lead singer Mark King and his bass playing is just sublime! Amazing live. This song top 10 and ‘Lessons In Love’ reached top 20 in US, are their biggest international hits. They have a great catalog.
Yeah, this song very much epitomizes the mid 80s. A little after my time in HS. Would have been fun to dance to this one as a 9th grader in the gym after the football game.
L42 was big on having “counter melodies.” Mark with the front, main melody and Mike Lindup in the back with the falsettos and alternate lyrics. Just beautiful. ❤
It's really cool that you touched on the counter melodies in the second chorus, as well as the note Mike Lindup (keyboardist and second vocalist who does the falsetto) hits in both choruses. When I first heard this song at age 5 in spring 1986, Mikes vocal "Drawn into the stream, of undefined illusion" sold me on the entire song. Also, having this song become a top ten hit in late May to early June 1986 (#7 for two weeks on Billboard Hot 100 US Chart) really showed the band's talent, as they had to compete with Whitney Houston, Madonna, George Michael, Michael McDonald, Patti Labelle, Billy Ocean, The Jets, and others for a top 10 spot during that time.
Slap bang into my teens again. I’m thinking 1985? I was 15. What a song 🔥 . This extended album version is even better than the hit single. Fond memories stirred ❤ Try “Sun Go Down/ Livin It Up” They were so big here in the UK. Not sure about globally at all.
people say that we were lucky to here this and the other great music that you are discovering, but you can hear and discover, enjoy and feel the magic in a very short period of time. we/I have had to live decades to get to experience it this is not a complaint, it is just a joy to see the next generations have the pleasure that we have had!
Mark King, helluva bass man. Saw them live in around ‘86 and that bass thuds you in the chest and MAKES you move. The Sun Goes Down is my favourite from L42,SO funky.
Level 42 were a fantastic band, and I think they are still performing. Check out Lessons in Love, Hot Water (the extended version is insane) and Micro-Kids. Great great band!
Mark King is a well respected bass player by his peers too. He usually tapes his thumb because of his slap style and bled in a show one night and the audience thought it was part of the show.
"...because its over i aint comin back You gave me everything And now im breakin your heart. You know that i dont mean To tear your world apart..." "Its over".mext please...bittersweet mellow., lush, perfection...
I'm so glad you enjoyed this song. Here's another one of their tunes, if interested. "Level 42 - Lessons In Love (Extended Version)" (by the channel: Edwardo Montenegro M1) --This song was released as a single in 1986. It was later included in their album called "Level Best." The song was a commercial success reaching number #3 on the UK Singles Charts and reached the top 10 in numerous other countries. This is such a fun and groovy tune; it certainly makes you want to shake your booty. 🎶🕺💃
Love this song. Doesn't get the love I think it deserves. I think it would be better if the electronica was stripped away a bit, which often happens when groups like this show up at summer festivals, which i love. Imagine with horns.
The 80s were the decade when it started with synths, samplers and drum machines and Level 42 used it wisely. They were played a lot in clubs and tv - just remembering "Lessons in Love" that was a banger. Being a musician in the 80s meant facing a lot of heavy competition. Sth Taylor Swift hasn't to worry about today - because there isn't a lot. :)
Mark king plays bass and is the lead singer. Mike lindup plays keyboard and sings the higher range.why? Mark says cause he can't and Mike can. Please 🙏🏻 do running in the family. The bass does a lot of work in that one.
Very big radio hit from Level 42, but there are tons of better Level 42 songs IMO. You want groove and musicianship? You haven't seen anything yet. lol

One of those amazing songs that still gets good radio play today! So timeless
Just turned 50 and this is one of my favorite songs ever. I will never get to the end of how great this song is.
outstanding band right here.
Same situation :-)
Same. We were 11 on it's release and it never gets old, I come back to it every now and again and it reminds me how perfect a song it is. There's definitely something about it.
Same here. I can’t believe we were just 11. I loved it then and I love it now.

Some songs you fall in love with the first time you hear them. For me this is one of them❤

Yeah, those counter-melodies are a strong part of Level 42's character
This was the one. I had the cassette and listened to it on my honeymoon, along with Sting's Blue Turtles...many moons ago.
Fabulous, isn’t it?
1985. Wow. ❤
Late hubby LOVED LEVEL 42!!! They are JUST SO GOOD!!! :) GLAD you ENJOYED IT!!

Love Love Love this song ...I was 18 when this song hit and I STILL groove to it to this day! So glad I subscribed to your channel...it's fantastic 😊

Such a perfect '80's song. I just LOVE it!! Thanks!
This has a definite groove about it. No classic '80s compilation can omit this one.
Still love this song, blasts me back to my younger days on a wave of nostalgia!
Saw these live around 3 years ago at Newcastle city hall, they sounded exactly the same as years ago.

Fantastic reaction Shawn, thank you😊♥ So glad you liked this one!😊
This just has such a groove on it! Telling you, the 80s had some magic 😅
@@ShawnSalvadori 😊
Lessons in Love should be next. Love Mark King!
Another classic!
Ahhh...the creative 80,s
Oh my heart! I'm in the 80's again! Thanks for the ride❤
It's an instant time machine for me too😊
They opened for Madonna in Dallas back in 1986....so good!!!
You know he is a legendary bass player?
"...because its over
i aint comin back
You gave me everything
And now im breakin your heart.
You know that i dont mean
To tear your world apart..."
"Its over".mext please...bittersweet mellow., lush, perfection...
I adore that one! (and the entire album 'Running in the Family'!)
Love this band!! Brings back memories!!!
World Machine, the album this is on is a fantastic album!
Great song and voice!
World Machine is an underrated album!

You should try their song called Love Games, very cool bass grooves in that one too
❤Takes me right back to highschool😊😊

This is the extended version
Yes...which in this case is also the album version.
❤❤❤❤❤😊
Mark king plays bass and is the lead singer.

Please 🙏🏻 do running in the family.
The bass does a lot of work in that one.
Lots of British music on GTA
If you’ve ever had a crush on that seemingly perfect someone.
React to their song Lessons In Love please.
So much of the eighties sounding music I dislike. Just does nothing for me. However this is one of the exceptions. Really good.
I only listen 80s music but I adore synths!
Very big radio hit from Level 42, but there are tons of better Level 42 songs IMO. You want groove and musicianship? You haven't seen anything yet. lol
There's a live version of this song that is better than this version. Search for Level 42 Something About You (Live in Holland 2009). Simply awesome.
Great suggestion!
Too much time spent Assuming meaning of song. There is no one meaning.
