One of the greatest films ever made. The hero's journey perfected! I remember when this came out. One of the greatest cinematic experiences of my life. 👍🏻💯
If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend the legendary movie, "Ben Hur." It's an amazing classic, that I think you'd enjoy as much as "Gladiator."
Return to Paradise is why I miss video stores. I saw Swingers in 97 and thought Vince Vaughn was awesome and wanted to see more of him. So when I saw his face on the shelf at my local video store I rented Return to Paradise and was blown away by all of the performances. Streaming is convenient but we really lost the the experience of discovering hidden gems.
There was a huge tradition in English theatre to be insane drunks. Richard Harris and Peter O'Toole were also very much in that club, also Richard Burton.
Is a great movie. I saw it a couple times in the theatre and got he DVD as soon as it came out. Still enjoy watching the movie from time to time as it has good re-watchability to it unlike so many other "blockbuster" movies.

Watched Gladiator today with my 20 year old daughter. I'd not watched it in 20+ years for sure, it was her first time. We went with the theatrical cut and she really enjoyed it.
Wow! Antonio Banderas would have been great as Maximus because he is Spanish, like the character 😅 Back in the day, when I went to the cinema to see it, when Maximus dies, and the earth moves under him, my boyfriend whispered in my ear: "he's being taken by the ants" and I almost burst into laughter 😂 Everytime I see it I remember it! Love this movie. But most people don't know that there is another gladiator movie from 1992 about boxing that was great. Now that I would love to see you do a 10 things you didn't know.
The year Russell won the Oscar for Gladiator, he came into my work place (DEKA Lambton Quay, Wellington). He was looking to buy a gift for his niece and I asked what it was for. He said “she’s coming with me to the Oscars”. He wanted to get her a Fur Real Friend and we didn’t have any in stock yet. He was very nice and very polite. ALSO I did not recognise him AT ALL. Not even when he mentioned the Oscars. I did not realise who he was until after he had left and a coworker came over to tell me. He was SO MUCH SMALLER in person and looked very young and I had no idea. Not sure what I thought he was on about when he mentioned the Oscars, but it was NZ and we are in general very chill about celebrities.
Ancient Rome, where everyone was both drunk ( due to adding wine to the drinking water to kill some of the nasty bugs in the water, mostly worked ) and crazy ( due to lead poisoning as the water was in lead pipes ) So the violence of ancient Rome was " Something in the water ".
Gladiator is a FREAKING masterpiece!! I absolutely love this movie, must have seen it about 50 times more or less! Russell Crowe is perfect as Maximus/Gladiator!!
I love how the sequel despite being released 24 years after the first has the guts to just be called Gladiator 2. No Gladiator reborn or The Gladiator or anything stupid like that just Gladiator 2.
Wine and food were very significant. And so merchants, as well as restaurants would advertise at a stadium, for sure. With banners around the circumference - just like today. FYI: Romans of the time had a larger and far more varied diet than you do!
Minty, I am a long time fan of your videos. Watched about 90% of your videos since 2018 or so. I am around your age at 43 years old. Lived in California my whole life with my dad taking me to movies as a kid most weekends. I'd like to see you do a video on one or all of these 90's dramas because movies like these are not released anymore. Jack the Bear, The War, and The Man without a Face. Way more interesting when it's a movie from 30 years ago no ones thinking about and it'll get people to see these. Pretty please with suger on top do a video on one or all three aforementioned films. Big fan of what you do! Thanks!
Hey Minty I just wanted to say, keep up the great work. I’ve been subscribed to your Channel for sometime, you cover all the best films worth covering anyways. Gladiator is a straight classic.

A great review for a great movie. I remember watching this movie with my brother and we both loved it. We also both love older Roman Epics or Sword and Sandal movies and this just hit the spot for us. Even though I love behind-the-scenes stuff, making-of and commentaries, you always put in that effort and dig out the things that most people don't know. I'm not watching 2.
