The opening scene where Jack is on the mast and casually steps off is absolutely awesome … it sets the tone of the movie immediately and tells us so much about Jack Sparrow without saying a word.

It was a very original take on a pirate story and gave it a delicious element of creepiness and unpredictability. I can't imagine anyone else but Johnny Depp in the role of Captain Jack Sparrow. His portrayal of the now iconic character was inspired genius!
Depp's portrayal of Jack Sparrow is one of those times where, as an actor, he did too good of a job. Ever since Pirates, I can't help but see bits of Jack Sparrow in every role he's done. It's a good thing that he's made a name for himself for doing quirky roles and he's a big enough name where he can afford to pick and choose which projects to take on, otherwise he might have been typecast as Jack Sparrow like characters for the remainder of his career.
Uuhhh....it's literally based off the ride from Disney which has a supernatural theme to it. There are talking skeletons and cursed treasure in the ride. And probably other things.
This was a delightful movie to watch in the summer of sequels in 2003. The sets, the sword fights, Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, and of course Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Surprised that Michael Eisner was unsure about the film
Not really surprised that Eisner wasn't sure about the film, there's always a chance that Pirates could have been a box office flop. Thankfully it wasn't, still film making is almost always a gamble with a new property (I know the ride existed, but the movie and the ride only share a name and a pirate premise)
@@marcg210 as much as Michael Eisner was capable of making mistakes like the rest of us, his tenure undoubtedly brought us Disney's best era. He liked to take interesting risks, usually they paid off but sometimes they didn't.

Real human skulls and skeletons were used when the original ride opened in California. They were cheaper to buy from local medical schools than to have reproductions made. However there’s supposedly only one human skull left at the California ride. Right as you enter the ride there’s a skull that overlooks the doors that open up and let the boats in, and that’s the last human skull that’s left. The other skulls and all skeletons have been replaced by reproductions.

The Interceptor was actually the tall ship The Lady Washington, built in Aberdeen WA in 1989. It's even stated in the credits at the end. It was built and still sails for the Gray Harbor Historical Seaport group.
The Black Pearl was also real, it was built on a powered ship called the HMS Sunset, it was then later transformed into the Queen Anne's Revenge and then back to the Black Pearl. Unfortunately it was scrapped after Pirates 4.
My initials with my whole 3rd grade class's initials are tucked away in the haul. I lived in Montesano and my dad had a woodshop business and dojo in Aberdeen. It used to dock here in Port Angeles and I had a blast going down below to see where my SAB initials are hiding behind the wall.

When Walt Disney opened Disneyland, nothing worked.” “Yeah but when the Pirates of the Caribbean ride breaks down, the pirates don’t eat the tourists.” -Jurassic Park So given that famous line in an iconic movie you’ve obviously seen, how could you not know it was based on a ride?? 😂
That first transformation scene with Capt. Barbossa still gives me chills! "Best start believing in ghost stories, missy... YOU'RE IN ONE!" Also, Hans Zimmer's music is beyond EPIC!
He did the voice of Marlin the Pelican in Finding Nemo too, one of the rare moments he uses his own Aussie voice. "Sorry if I ever took a snap at you. Fish gotta swim, bird's gotta eat!"
# 11: they wanted real rough seas. So they chartered two offshore supply vessels the NRC Responder (Black Pearl) and Megan T Miller (intercepter). They went a 100 miles off of Norfolk and wanted to see the real sh*t. The whole crew was sea sick they lost multiple cameras and the waves broke the wheelhouse windows on the Megan T. They superimposed the two ships on the osvs and all the movements and conditions were real. I watched the videos a few times.
They actually ended up using the tall ship The Lady Washington for the Interceptor in the movie. It's one of the big deals for my hometown in Aberdeen Washington. Teaching summer school for AHS in 2003, we got to take the students to a special showing at our local theater with the guys from Grays Harbor Historical Seaport since they built the ship back in I think 1989. They and the ship have a thanks in the ending credits. There was even a legal fight with Disney over them making changes to the ship for the movie and not restoring it back to the prior condition and rigging after the filming wrapped.
As a Dungeons & Dragons player, when this movie came out it immediately resonated with me. I remember describing it to a friend as: "That movie was a great day of D&D."
I actually really like the 2 Davy Jone sequels 😃 The story n music were really well done, it also xpand alot into the pirate world. Davy Jone was a great villain 😊
I couldn't agree more on that and those are actually my favorite entries in the series. Hearing Davey Jones's theme on his pipe organ always gives me goosebumps and my all time favorite piece of music in the series.
I love this movie. I love the second movie. The third though, At World’s End, is my absolute favorite. The first 3 in this franchise are a perfect trilogy.
to be fair, we did get Davey Jones in the second movie, one of the most awesome cgi baddies ever created, which still looks great even by today's standards.
It was very cutting edge technology at the time, ILM had to create software just to animate the tentacles and the particle physics simulation for the water on it. Plus they added some unique details based on Bill Nighy's on set performance capture, he was wearing a motion capture suit and dots on his face, so they could capture his movements exactly. This was when motion capture was still in its infancy, so it is even more impressive.
This was one of those movies that didn’t have the right to be as good as it was. My friends and I went in a whim and I absolutely LOVED it! In fact, it was this movie that sold me on the blue ray format. I could never really tell the difference when seeing displays at the store, but one day they had PotC playing. The movie that made pirates cool again. The last few Pirates films have to be the worst...but you have heard of them. Always a fun movie series to watch .
It is true that Disneyland used some real skulls/skeletons when Pirates of the Caribbean first opened at Disneyland in the 60s. They were donated by UCLA, as at the time, fake skeletons didn't look realistic enough. But as time went on and technology advanced, all the real skeletons were replaced with fake ones (and also given a proper burial). But supposedly one real skull is still there - inside the Captain's treasure room where a skeleton in bed is looking at a treasure map with a magnifying glass. The skull on the bed's headboard is the last remaining real one. Also, just a fun little fact, the Shanghai version of the Pirates ride is the first (and only) of the Pirates of the Caribbean attractions that is based on the movies. The rest all came before the movies (though elements/characters from the movie have been added to those rides since the movie got so popular). And Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Florida initially was not supposed to get a Pirates ride, as they felt Florida was too close to the actual Caribbean. Instead, that park was going to get a western themed version, called Western River Expedition, which was going to be part of a 2nd phase of the park (but that's a whole 'nother story). But when WDW opened in 1971, lots of people were asking "Where's the Pirate ride?", so Imagineering rushed to shoehorn a version of the ride into the park as quick as they could. As for Eisner, before coming to Disney, he was President & CCO of the Paramount movie studio. He came to Disney in 1984 along with Frank Wells. And at first it was a great move, as Wells was the money guy (like Roy O. Disney was) and Eisner the creative guy (like Walt Disney). But then Wells was tragically killed in a helicopter crash in 1994. Eisner then took over being President as well as being CEO and Chariman of the Board for Disney. And things slowly started going down hill and Eisner was sinking the company with lots of bad decisions. He was eventually ousted in 2005 after a 2 year "Save DIsney" campaign organized by Roy E. Disney (Roy O's son & Walt's nephew).
When I saw this the first time in theatre (yes, I am old 😉), I felt like I was watching a real life adaptation of the video game "Monkey Island". AND I LOVED IT 😂 Seriosly, think about it: ghost pirates, a big treasure, a naive main character,...DAMN even the the dog with the prison cell key was in it! 🤣
The writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio have admitted in an interview they were huge fans of The Monkey Island games, which were loosely lampooning the Disney ride anyway. Just poking fun at the way pirates insult each other during combat and how grog is like sulphuric acid in certain situations, plus the fourth wall breaks too. 🤣 The dog with the keys in the prison was apparently in the original ride at Disneyland. I don't know because I have never experienced the ride in my life.
The Special Edition of Monkey Island on Xbox Live has an audio commentary from the game's creator, who said he did loosely base the game on the Disney ride and a book called On Stranger Tides, but he put his own humour into it. He created the SCUMM interface specifically for the game, which at the time was groundbreaking, it changes the music dynamically based on what is happening in the game and it was meant to replace the text adventure games that existed before. So instead of typing in commands, you just click on the action buttons instead. There was an early version of the interface in The Day of The Tentacle game before, which he also worked on, but it was very basic.
@@chindleymuffin Didn't know the game was REALLY inspired by the ride, but it makes sense, especially if you look at the second part. ;-) Thanks for the information!

She passed away late April in 2008, and I would give anything to share One more day with her. I was never the favorite grandchildren, but she was always my favorite Grandparent. I miss you Grandma, I hope wherever you are is as beautiful as your Bermuda you grew up in!
@@adrielburned6924 Oh cool! My 3rd or 4th grade class got to board the ship when it visited us down in Clark County years ago. We never got to carve our names in, though. What a bragging right that would be!
Re: OP's comment -- Being so young when I got to board the ship, I completely forgot it was built in Washington. That explains why they visited our little city at least a few times over the years. I always wondered why us. Thanks for the info!
@@Fimbleshanks that's very cool. But they weren't carved. Just on paper and tucked into the wall before being paneled over. In reality, I doubt it stayed long. Maybe refit or temporary changes for movies. But still a great memory.
Did know that the "Lady Wasington" was also in "Star Trek Generations"??
That Amber Heard line was hilarious.
yep
“All major theme parks have delays. When Walt Disney opened Disneyland, nothing worked.”
“Yeah but when the Pirates of the Caribbean ride breaks down, the pirates don’t eat the tourists.”
-Jurassic Park
So given that famous line in an iconic movie you’ve obviously seen, how could you not know it was based on a ride?? 😂
That first transformation scene with Capt. Barbossa still gives me chills! "Best start believing in ghost stories, missy... YOU'RE IN ONE!"
Also, Hans Zimmer's music is beyond EPIC!
Klaus Badelt was the music composer. Hans Zimmer was the music editor, music programmer, score producer, and soundtrack producer.
@@disneyfactsguy oops!
I love Barbosa. He's underrated for sure. He played the bad guy in that hero movie with Ben stiller, "Mystery Men". He's got some range for sure.
Yeah the second most popular character in the series is underrated.
I meant as an actor. You don't see him in a lot of movies. Calm down.
He did the voice of Marlin the Pelican in Finding Nemo too, one of the rare moments he uses his own Aussie voice. "Sorry if I ever took a snap at you. Fish gotta swim, bird's gotta eat!"
Casanova Frankenstein was his character in Mystery Men.
Aldo he was house on the haunted hill
Jack Sparrow is by far the best character 💛
@@treyartson6788 yes but they computer imposed her onto the boat I worked on.
Dep was so good in this role! It's a shame he had to encounter that floater on the high seas of Hollywood and pick up Amber Turd
😂
As a Dungeons & Dragons player, when this movie came out it immediately resonated with me. I remember describing it to a friend as: "That movie was a great day of D&D."
Wholesome
As a fellow D&D player, I can't wait for the D&D movie to come out next year.
I DM'd a spell jammer campaign based on Pirates of the Caribbean and Treasure Island, er, Treasure Planet.
I genuinely love Pirates 2 and 3 as much as the first 🏴☠️
I actually really like the 2 Davy Jone sequels 😃
The story n music were really well done, it also xpand alot into the pirate world. Davy Jone was a great villain 😊
I couldn't agree more on that and those are actually my favorite entries in the series. Hearing Davey Jones's theme on his pipe organ always gives me goosebumps and my all time favorite piece of music in the series.
@@serpent6827 😃😊
That was a movie that I knew exactly what it looked like on DVD being played on a CRT TV. That’s the movie that I use when I get a new TV. If it looks like I’m looking out my window I know it’s a good one!
Yes, the Blu-ray version is fantastic. So many more details are seen and the night scenes are really much sharper/clearer!!
@@slcRN1971 seriously! First time I saw that in HD I thought I was watching a behind the scenes video. Then I was all confused because it looked like they recreated the scene (where Jack first shows up at Port Royal) on video. It looked that good!
The movie that made pirates cool again. The last few Pirates films have to be the worst...but you have heard of them. Always a fun movie series to watch .
Minty your awesome! How about a 10 things about Little Monsters? The one with Fred Savage and Howey Mandel?
SHOUT MATE ;)
Hollywood executives: Hire Johnny Depp
Also Hollywood executives:
Tell Johnny Depp not to play the part like Johnny Depp....
Lol
I love this film it's so hilarious johnny Depp plays Captain Jack Sparrow brilliantly 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Eisner did a lot of good as well
Justice for Johnny Depp !!!! He created this role out of thin air.
The dog with the keys in the prison was apparently in the original ride at Disneyland. I don't know because I have never experienced the ride in my life.
@@chindleymuffin 😂
This movie is so nostalgic for me. I can't believe it's almost 20 years. I was only 30 years old. Man I'd like to hit the rewind button and go back to the Lotr and potc years... Thanks for the memories Minty!
I saw this in the theater; I wanted to be a pirate when it finished 😂
Too bad we won't see any more of these
It's called beating a dead horse.
I actually like the first three movies of this franchise. The cast is really good and lots of fun in my opinion.
First three movies are the best. The story was build up so well. The rest is fun to watch cause Depp is in it. Without Depp there is just no POTC.
They should have ended it with the first 3, the rest are trash
I remember this coming out and seeing it, I still have the ticket. When it came out it was just "Pirates of the Caribbean", when they added "Curse of the Black Pearl", I was like, "WTF is this? When did this come out?". Then I realized what it was and laughed a little.
I always do that too! I was like which one is this but then realized it was the first one. Lol
"You may be the worst movie reviewer I've ever heard of"
Minty: "But you have heard of me"
Can you imagine how awesome it would be if Spielberg directed so Dustin Hoffman could make a cameo as Captain Hook

I couldn't imagine Jack Sparrow being any other way than how Depp played him
