I can't believe this is 50 years old. I would watch this film countlessly on video and dvd. Gene was perfect as Willy Wonka. The songs and set design has aged like fine wine. Its nice to see that he loved working on it and that he sheds a tear when fans talked to him about it.
Peter Ostrum, who played Charlie, never acted again. His parents took his salary from the movie and created his college fund, which he used to become a veterinarian. Occasionally he'd be asked to speak about his experience in the movie, and would use it to educate children about caring for their pets.
When I heard what became of him after filming the movie I thought that it was wise of him to pursue a career in veterinary medicine away from show business. And that was wise of his parents to put away his earnings for college. From what I've seen in his interviews he seems to be happy in his life.
This movie helped bring me out of a severe depression twice in my life, once after my parents divorced and once during a year of living in a DV situation. Gene Wilder was a genius

Yes Wonka was being harsh but he was in the right when he pointed out that Charlie and Grandpa Joe stolen the fizzy lifting drinks. Thereby violating their part of the contract. You've got the candy store sequence wrong. The candy man is throwing candy at the kids who are reaching greedily as if they are entitled to it. He shows more personal attention and concern for Charlie. Asking for payment is a test of his honesty which he passes. The candyman gives Charlie the final ticket on purpose. Wonka expected him to win from the beginning and says so near the end.

Another few "Did you know"'s: The young actress Julie Dawn Cole who played Veruca Salt doesn't like Chocolate. she explained it herself in a reunion documentary, In the scene in the big chocolate river room where she had to dip into and taste chocolate sauce, she was trying very hard to get as little as possible on her tongue, and she's visibly flinching from it. Cole and actress Denise Nickerson both thought Peter Ostrum [Charlie] was a little hottie, and they took turns flirting with him. Michael Bollner [Agustus Gloop] didn't speak a word of english, and did all his lines phonetically. The other children tried to make him comfortable, but it was still pretty lonely for him, and it was a bit of a relief for him that Agustus was the first to leave.

EXCELLENT job, Minty! This was a WONDERFUL video! I saw this movie with my family in the theater 50 years ago when it first came out. My sister and I grew up watching it! This was DEFINITELY one of the highlights of our childhoods. You brought back A LOT of memories! Thanks, Minty, so VERY MUCH! 😁
I get that the family is so poor, all the adults share the only room in the house, and they're old so they can't contribute. But how do they bathe or go the bathroom? The stench must be overpowering! And they probably need regular penicillin shots to keep their bedsores from getting infected
Great Video, as usual, Minty. I think that Gene Wilder was so brilliant as Willy Wonka, that, Johnny Depp, who is also a Great Actor, was doomed from the start, especially when your last name is Wilder & you have Wild Hair. So sad that Gene Wilder passed away, even if at a decent age.
They would show this movie in the 70s when I was a kid around easter with the wizard of oz and chitty chitty bang bang. I even saw a christmas display of the movie at one of the big department store downtown.
I don't know, man. He definitely hard-balled Charlie after giving out a lot of candy. He didn't have to do him like that. A Wonka bar doesn't even cost that much.
it's also not like he had a sign out front saying "No Poor Kids". Charlie was watching everything play out through the window. Their was nothing stopping him from going inside once he saw free candy being given out. The second scene at the candy shop is different. He's probably gotten more business in the past month than he had in his store's entire history, but now he decides to start getting stingey?
I don’t say he is a jerk. That’s part where he hits the little girl by opening the counter door, that was a on set accident that was not part of the script. If you watch the bloopers for Terminator 2; in that scene where the T-800 save John Conner from the T-1000 by blowing up the big truck and then the T-800 put the shotgun back in the compartment of the motorcycle. In one take as Arnold was putting the shotgun in the compartment, he accidentally hit Edward Furlong
I heard that the reason they changed the name was because the Vietnam War was going on and they didn't want to have the film associated with the enemy which had been nicknamed Charlie. I am glad you mentioned Sammy Davis Jr. though, because that became his signature song and he even sang a bar in the Cannonball Run.
Slugworth was in the book, only cited as a competitor, with his sluworth sizzler chocolate bar. He wasn’t a character that interacted with any of the main characters during the story though. He was mentioned along with other candy competitors who would try to steal Wonka’s ideas, and so Wonka shut down for a while
Grandpa Joe Benefits cheat, 20 years bed ridden watching his family struggle hard times and sponging from them, and yet is up and dancing at the prospect of a day out with Charlie.
Not to mention that he encouraged Charlie to steal the fizzy lifting drinks after Wonka told everyone no. And he also encouraged Charlie to give Slugworth the gobstopper to spite Wonka!
When Wonka does that forward roll, I always think Gene Wilder leaves it too late to actually go into the roll and he's going to fall flat on his face !
I loved the old version more than Johnny Depps, but I still liked it too and how they turned the elevator glass. Ty for sharing the information some of your bits I didn't know 😉😊💋
Also, it's worth noting all the parodies and references over the years, my favorite being the Slurm factory episode of "Futurama." "Grunka Lunka dunkety dasis, The secret of Slurm's on a need-to-know basis"
@@eclipsehorse8693 it's been done to death, but the scene where Peter runs home to the "golden ticket" music and then falls and scrapes his knee always makes me laugh.
Didja know? The girl who played violet actually turned blue in school after the movie, because her skin absorbed the paint and so she "relapsed" in school. She said she couldn't get a date to the school dance because she was a blueberry, for Real. Violets evil ruined another innocent life.
Some other random facts: 1. There were a total of ten actors playing Oompa Lumpas. Nine men and one woman. 2. In her adult years, the actress that played Veruca admitted she took a few props and still has them (such as a Golden Egg). They were forbidden from doing this but she got away with it. 3. The puff of steam that Mike exhales after eating the explosive candy was made by a tube connected to the side of his face.
I was amazingly lucky and honored to meet all five of the kids, 10 years ago in Chicago, at Wizard World ComiCon. It was the first time all five of them were together since shooting the movie. All five of them were incredibly friendly and kind, but Julie Dawn Cole and Paris Themmen went above and beyond, engaging me in conversation...not just shaking hands, saying hello and signing an autograph. One of my best friends is beyond words obsessed with Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, so I got an 8X10 of the kids and Gene Wilder standing on the steps inside the Chocolate Room and had them sign it to her for her birthday and Christmas present and Julie and Paris were asking me questions about her and how long we've been friends and giving me kudos for getting her the picture since she couldn't be there herself. Till the day I leave this blue marble, I'll always consider myself every kind of lucky that I got to actually meet all five of them, especially and sadly now that Denise Nickerson isn't with us anymore (I did get to tell her how much of a Dark Shadows fan I am. I use to watch it with my Mom when I was a kid.). We are the makers of the music and we are the dreamers of the dreams.
Yeah, some people just don't understand that some movies are _complete,_ with nothing left hanging and needing continuation or clarification. But you know Hollywood: "We've got to keep this cash cow alive," seems to apply all too often.
@@mcgannahanskyjellyfetti6854 except, it wouldnt be called that...because the guy who we all think of as slugworth, wasnt actually slugworth, he was wonkas only non oompa loompa employee
My favorite scene was where the guy is using a computer to calculated the location of the golden tickets. The contest was definitely rigged. The fake Slugworth was able to confront both Veruca and Charlie before the discovery of their tickets were made public. Up the airy mountain, down the rushing glen. We dare not go a-hunting, for fear of little men.
Along with the boat seat theory showing that Willy Wonka had a master plan, I think the Candy Store Guy was a bit of a jerk to Charlie because he was working for Wonka as well. His job was to show Charlie that distribution of resources will often overlook the lower classes, to pace himself when presented with excess, and consideration for others will be rewarded (he gave Charlie the bar with the Golden Ticket after asking for one for his grandfather). As for the little girl who got knocked by the counter lid, that's just a young extra who wasn't on her mark.
1: as a kid I always thought the chocolate river was chocolate milk...not just chocolate. Looks like I'm right! Lol 2: the scene with the candy man singing and tossing candy to the kids, I figured was just Charlie fantasizing what being a "rich" kid was like. The next time we see the candyman is how he actually is without the filter of Charlie's imagination over top. Imo
I heard the original last line was actually Grampa Joe (not Charlie) yelling "Yippee," and the director called the writer while the guy was on vacation to make him write a better ending. And if I'm not mistaken, the writer admitted that what he wrote was cheesy as hell, but still better than Grampa yells, "Yippee?" LOL
A few years ago I was falling asleep with the movie playing in the background. I started to dream out the scenes as the audio was heard but the dream changed. I saw the entire layout of the chocolate factory that wasn't shown in the movie or written in the book. In the basement were Oompa Loompas that we didn't see, and they all looked like John Malkovich. They were fueling the entire factory with coal as coal was being mined.

I think Dahl made that up later just because he was a jerk who hated the movie
where IS the lickable wallpaper?! why don't we have this by now?! :)
@Edgar Poe do you know who Alan Moore is? The man is borderline insane when it comes to movies based on his works
@@eclipsehorse8693 as disgusting as children are, the last thing we need is them spreading more of their germs around
I remember the Wonka Superskrunch bar very well. Wish it were still around (-:
I never realized the Candy Man was such a jerk.
With modern "think of the children" fear of predators he's pretty creepy, too.
I didn't think of him as a jerk. It's supposed to be a musical and not real life.
Benefit cheat, did it seem they had money for food,
Not to mention that he encouraged Charlie to steal the fizzy lifting drinks after Wonka told everyone no. And he also encouraged Charlie to give Slugworth the gobstopper to spite Wonka!
Minty, can you do Pleasantville?
A truly remarkable film.
When Wonka does that forward roll, I always think Gene Wilder leaves it too late to actually go into the roll and he's going to fall flat on his face !
I loved the old version more than Johnny Depps, but I still liked it too and how they turned the elevator glass. Ty for sharing the information some of your bits I didn't know 😉😊💋
Also, it's worth noting all the parodies and references over the years, my favorite being the Slurm factory episode of "Futurama."
"Grunka Lunka dunkety dasis,
The secret of Slurm's on a need-to-know basis"
Grunka Lunka dunkety darmed-guard...
The parody in "Family Guy" was pretty dead on to- as Peter gets kicked out of the factory, he even laments "don't I even get a song?"
@@eclipsehorse8693 it's been done to death, but the scene where Peter runs home to the "golden ticket" music and then falls and scrapes his knee always makes me laugh.
Absolutely! Futurama did it the best!
Peter Ostrum was such a charming and believable child actor. It's too bad he didn't do more movies, but at least we always have him as Charlie.
Charlie hated being an actor so much that dude is a veterinarian today
Acting was his pet peeve.
A good vet can cure a trout of herpes [5:00].
have you seen a picture of him? He actually bears a striking resemblance to John DiMaggio

10:50 *The Trippy Boatride* I wonder if that's where they got the inspiration for Thor's little Freak Out in the movie Thor Ragnarok
Mark..you should consider doing a preview on The Adventures of Baron Munchausen...please
YES... robert c you are a genius. Yes Mark... please!!!
Didja know?
The girl who played violet actually turned blue in school after the movie, because her skin absorbed the paint and so she "relapsed" in school.
She said she couldn't get a date to the school dance because she was a blueberry, for Real.
Violets evil ruined another innocent life.
your turning violet Violet
In the Candy Store Man’s defense , if your hungry and you eat really rich food fast you risk being sick on it .
Some other random facts:
I had the honor of meeting the cast. Veruca Salt is just the nicest person in real life.
I did the I have a golden ticket prank and song thing at a store and the lady at the counter lost her mind and couldn't stop laughing.
dude every time you say Willy Wonker it cracks me the hell up LMAO!
I agree, I'm glad they didn't make a sequel.
But.... um yeah, me either.
Yeah, some people just don't understand that some movies are _complete,_ with nothing left hanging and needing continuation or clarification. But you know Hollywood: "We've got to keep this cash cow alive," seems to apply all too often.
I wish they did. They could have called it, _Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory 2: Slugworth's Revenge..._
@@mcgannahanskyjellyfetti6854 except, it wouldnt be called that...because the guy who we all think of as slugworth, wasnt actually slugworth, he was wonkas only non oompa loompa employee
That's what I'm saying not all good movies need sequels.
Fun fact: The candy man worked for the Daleks a year later as the controller!
The guy using the computer was the late Tim Brooke-Taylor, most famous for "The Goodies".
He passed away last year from COVID-19.
Slugworth was able to confront all 5 of the children as they won the tickets.
The Happily Ever After line was not from Gene Wilder, it was from David Wolper. The story is on the DVD, and it's an awesome one.
This movie was and is fantastic. We loved it as kids. I still do.
1: as a kid I always thought the chocolate river was chocolate milk...not just chocolate. Looks like I'm right! Lol
2: the scene with the candy man singing and tossing candy to the kids, I figured was just Charlie fantasizing what being a "rich" kid was like.
They were fueling the entire factory with coal as coal was being mined.
can never get enough of this movie. its on every christmas easter and any other chance they can to get it shown. gene wilder is just of the wall in it. this and blazing saddles are my two favorite wilder films
Losing Gene Wilder was a true tragedy, he was such a wonderfully gentle soul and a phenomenal actor
Oh, the insanity! Love this crazy movie. Possibly my favourite Gene Wilder performance, though I did enjoy See No Evil, Hear No Evil with Richard Pryor a lot, too :-)
