  • Today I make a vase from a Pear wood log that was cut in 1999. It's almost as old as me.

There is no doubt - you are an absolutely insanely talented young man. I would love to come back in 20 years to see how far you take your craft. I'll be 85 years old by then, so I hope I live long enough! You have an incredible future in front of you.

There's a reason classic shapes exist: People still like them! There's something very satisfying about this sort of shape: It isn't too fussy, but fairly simple; there's variety (smaller top, longer lower section); there's balance (beautiful wood balances a simplicity of design)..and so on!

Pear is an interesting wood, isn't it. When turning it looked very even and close grained, but that was an illusion caused by the rotation at speed. To find that it's almost as gnarly as olive in the finished vase, from a log not a burr -- what on earth goes on as it grows?!

The imperfections in the wood make it so much more beautiful than a perfect piece would be. You know just how to make the piece speak.

This is traditional old growth well seasoned wood, some of the most amazing and awesome wood a turner will ever get the privledge to use in their lives! You did it proud, well done, 22 years of patience and waiting and not becoming firewood worked out pretty well I must say!
