Love it. I was watching another turning video today and said to myself “I haven’t seen a video by Olivier in a while” and then this pops up. I like the way you did the crack patch. Great work as always!
Plugging or “bunging is a tried and true solution which, if done properly, lasts a long time without issues. As a carpenter on the coast of Maine I know about this as much as anyone. And you didn’t do it the best way. You want your plugs and your wood to be as similar as possible. I see you used the same species (good) but you have opposite grain orientation. Your bowl (where the crack was) is side grain but your bungs were end grain. They will move (as the weather changes) in different directions, and you will see cracks and/or joint failure. I offer this knowledge as help to a promising wood turner. Nice form son.
Sure, that’s all true, and great if you are plugging a wooden boat you don’t want to sink. But this kid is making art, not sailing vessels. I think he WANTED the contrast in the grain for the visual impact, which was a wise move. Nobody is going to being eating their morning oatmeal out of this bark-edge oak bowl. It’s a piece of art. It’ll sit on a shelf and look pretty.
Pat McVicker, I agree with you in large part. I may have made a mistake thinking this artist, like me, would want to learn more about the material of his craft. Perhaps he only wants encouragement. But knowing that I have grown the most through constructive criticism moves me at times to offer the same. At least if, months or years from now, the vessel pulls away from the bung and the artist is displeased with the effect, he knows how to change to achieve a different outcome. I am sorry if I offended him (or you).
Wow that Oak really showed how hard it really was when it resisted your drilling so defiently. And the crack fixing approach, although so seemingly obvious in retrospect {things that make you go "Duh."} is a really great idea that seemed to turn out considerably nicer than using other crack filling pastes or glues or whathaveyou. Nice job.
OK, I was thinking to myself:, “fixing the crack with a hole auger?” Then the next thing I see is that dowel you were turning and I thought: “Fix the crack my ass, he just ground it out!” Then you start knocking the dowel plugs into the holes with wood glue and I thought: “Ah hah! That’s fucking brilliant for fixing a crack!” Good on you Mr. Gomis!
Gotta say, I love your camerawork here, dude! Do you have multiple cameras already positioned or do you have a small amount of cameras and you have to reposition them everytime???
First of all, that was an interesting way to fix the crack, I haven't thought of that. I am so used to people filling it with epoxy or CA. Secondly, do you put the oil on the bark sections too?
Wondering about how you point your thumb down the tool towards the turning wood. That seems like an accident waiting to happen. Nice work with the dowels. Circular repairs stop cracks in metal, too.
Daft way of fixing a crack , looks ok but I think a contrasting coloured epoxy resin would of been a better way to go . Should call it the marmite bowl .
Phillip Cox What, is there only one way to address a crack? Was there an International Consortium on Fixing Cracks and I missed it? Jeeze, considering that resin has been used a zillion times to address cracks, I am all for a refreshing and innovative approach to this issue.
Salut , tu as jamais penser a la résine ?
Beautiful grain in that piece of Oak, but not sure I like the way you fixed the crack as I think you could have left if as a natural feature or filled it with epoxy glue and coffee grounds. Cheers, Huw
@@OlivierGomis Point accepted. If I was to use that method in the future and I might, because I do like it to a degree, I would use different woods for each "dowel" to make it a feature. Cheers, Huw
Never saw a repair done this way. Interesting technique. However, the repair gave the bowl a strange appearance in my opinion. The plugs could have been better aligned with the grain of the wood of the bowl. Regardless, it turned out well.

You are a genius what a way to handle the problem. Ah a new generation. Always watch your work 😊🇺🇸

Adam Somes I wish everyone was as nice as you are. I agree, helpful criticism can be a good learning tool.
I Like how you fixed that crack, making it a feature, rather than a fault! Well done!
I like your method of fixing the cracks, every fix doesnt have to be epoxy

Interesting technique used for repair. Never saw that done before. Great results. I really enjoy your channel. Thanks for sharing.
I know it's kind of off topic but does anyone know a good site to watch newly released series online ?
@Khalil Ty Meh I watch on Flixportal. Just google for it:) -carson

Interesting crack fix. First time I've seen you turn something not segmented. What are you using to sign your work?
The bowl is beautiful! ❤❤❤
Wow amazing
Brave at start, whole lathe shaking quite violently
Very expressive bowl
SEMPURNA 👍👍👍
Great looking bowl 👍
Im new to making bowls what is the clear stuff hes rubbing on
Nice bowl! Just wondering what brand of lathe your are using there?

I was thinking of leaving a similar comment. I read yours....and I figured....fuck it. You got it covered!
Did you build your own bandsaw? If so where did you get the plans?
The finish is beautiful. What is it?
How big is that band saw?
Well you learn something new every day. I’ve never seen a crack fixed that way. It’s interesting. Where ever did you get that particular idea?
Merci
great job👏👏
what is the diameter of your chuck?
Nice technical. Cheers
Interesting fix.
Gotta say, I love your camerawork here, dude! Do you have multiple cameras already positioned or do you have a small amount of cameras and you have to reposition them everytime???
2 cameras, but I mostly only use one.
i wonder if you've ever thought about working with resin. I'd love to see what you could do with that.
Noooooooo! Please let this resin fad be over with soon.
Thanks for the FF....

I don't know if I like the repair or not, but I guess it does keep the integrity of it being all wood except for the glue of course.
turned out ok that was one weird way of fixing a crack lol . well at least the cat dint seem to mind lol .
I like your little shop very much dont you think its time for a very well made metal heavy duty bench for the woodlathe?
Nice.
Interesting repair technique. Did you think of it while trying to sleep as you sometimes with your designs?
Haha not this one I though of while making it.
Plug the crack. Heard that before 😅

Glasscutr The plugs were a unique repair solution, but I didn’t like the end result either. Still a nice bowl
What's name of the machine and price
Which machine ?

Can’t say I’m a fan of that repair technique, but then again I’m just some random YT dude who watches these videos - what the hell do I know?

I say you see a crack that big next time use it as firewood!
