If schools ever become modernized, I want to see this game as a "Required Play."
Besides the brilliant integration of gameplay mechanics with its storytelling, it would be a great tool to show kids, teens, and even adults how interesting and compelling the cosmos is. The game handles laws of physics surprisingly realistically and would be a perfect way to teach people how gravitational pulls work and the passage of time in the universe.

The best explanation I've found for why Solanum is still alive on the moon is that the quantum nature of the moon, especially right next to the Eye, is that it exists outside of traditional time space. Solanum speaks to you as if she only recently arrived on the moon and as if the Nomai are still kicking in the solar system. At no point does Solanum state that she cannot leave, she just happens to be sticking around on her pilgrimage, so in all likelihood, she has only just arrived and is now fascinated by your arrival.
So, essentially, it's not that she has survived for so long, it's that the Eye of the Universe changes the rules or reality, which is shown off at the end of the game, and so she happens to exist in a time bubble that you are able to enter on the moon. She is both dead and alive, but this has more to do with the Eye of the universe than the quantum moon, because if it were just the moon, the player would never be able to see it. The whole idea of quantum super positions is that an object is simultaneously in several possible positions at the same time and once it's "observed" it collapses into a single position of those possibilities. This "observation" is not based on you, it's based on the object, that's why you're able to land on the moon by using the scout's camera to "observe" the moon when you yourself cannot. So, if Solanum was actually alive at the same time she was dead, she would be observing the moon while it was around the Eye of the Universe and you would never have the chance to reach the moon. If, instead, the Eye of the Universe is creating a time pocket, than in your observable universe, Solanum is dead and not able to observe anything, but when you reach the Eye, you enter the same time bubble as Solanum and you both observe the moon, keeping it anchored.
The biggest issue with this theory is, how do you enter and leave the bubble when Solanum is still observing the moon, but my theory would be one of two things: It's a game and had to make some concessions to make things work, or Solanum blinks at times and this let's you leave.

This is amazing, I couldn't quite finish the game and would end up just dropping it due to missing crucial knowledge about one of the many puzzles it has.
But I finished it yesterday and oh boy was it worth it.
A really good friend told me to install the Quantum Space Buddies mod (it's a multiplayer mod) and said that if I could finish it with as little help as he could give me, he would do his first playthrough of Rain World with me.
That got me motivated as heck and I just had to know everything about this game.
Eventually, we finished it, and it was just amazing. A game I was so bent on not finishing - because of skill issue, let's be honest - just became one of my favorite game experience ever, thanks to my friend.
    I will cherish it forever.

Yeesss, finally the time has come for h2 to talk about his favourite game.
    Edit: OMG, it's long.
Edit2: This game has effected me in ways I didn't think could be realised in a video game, and gave me feelings I never felt before. I know it sounds strange, and that's because it is, but it truly had an impact on me. It makes me feel happy to know that other people experienced this too. And watching the video makes me remember all the fun and terrifying moments I had in it.
Edit3: I think through this video I realised why I didn't enjoy echoes of the eye as mutch as the original game. Now don't get me wrong It's still really, really good, but I think that it loses some of its charm by offering a more linear experience. Which is inevitable, since you can't put in a new giant new mystery, and somehow make the game obscure again.

Outerwilds hit me harder than any media I’ve ever witnessed

  • @clarfonthey
    @clarfonthey 8 месяцев назад

Not only is position entangled in quantum mechanics, but time itself is entangled as well.
The most commonly known version of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle is that position and momentum are inversely certain: knowing position makes momentum less certain, and vice/versa.
However, there's also another version, where energy and time are inversely certain: knowing the energy of something makes time less certain, and vice/versa.
So, the eye of the universe, being an incredibly energetic thing, is definitely uncertain in time. Obviously, the game doesn't *really* follow actual quantum mechanics, but time being uncertain in quantum mechanics certainly explains away the idea that Solanum would be caught in time on the sixth moon as well, and you probably meet her shortly after she arrives.
On a different note, you did a really lovely job with this video. And I'm also very happy that you treated the concept of the game even being in a time loop as a spoiler, which is something even the game's own marketing doesn't do.

    • @clarfonthey
      @clarfonthey 8 месяцев назад

I should add, the way my physics teacher described this has always stuck with me: you can take as much energy as you want from the bank of the universe, as long as you give it back before anyone notices.

Outer Wilds or: how I learned to stop worrying and love the entropy

  • @BirdMoose
    @BirdMoose 4 месяца назад

For me the story of Outer Wilds was acceptance. I spent the whole game trying to figure out how to stop the sun from exploding, how to save my people; and then I couldn't. I realized it wasn't about preventing the end but making peace with that end. Then when EOTE came out I thought I'd find a way to use this new ship which could seemingly survive then end of the universe (at least for a time) to ferry the survivors away; this time I realized more quickly I was wrong, I was simply there to lay a single soul to rest.
I felt the end was a hostile and malicious force, but in the words of Solanum, "I considered such unknowns sinister. Now, though, I understand they bear no ill will. The universe is, and we are."

  • @Cylus1527
    @Cylus1527 5 месяцев назад

One thing I think is amazing about this game is how the order you find pieces of the story greatly impacts your own personal perception of the overall story and what your roll in it is.
    SPOILERS:
For me, I learned about the Nomai's plan to blow up the sun long before reaching the Sun Station. This led me to believe that, as befits a video game protagonist, I was supposed to save the world by stopping the Nomai's crazy plan. The experience of learning that was impossible at the Sun Station, grappling with a real sense of dispair and hopelessness, and then finding one last meaningful question to chase down (what's the big deal with this 'Eye of the Universe) made this game into an almost religious experience for me. I was still grappling with despair when I entered the coordinates in the Vessel because I couldn’t even use the ship to try and evacuate anyone. I only knew one set of coordinates, after all. But the payoff to finding the Eye... Ive never had any story hit me like that, and unfortunately, I doubt I ever will again.

An answer to your question about the QM
    ***Spoilers***
Solanum is alive on the 6th location because time doesn't exist the same way for Quantum objects or those entangled with them. The game clues you in on this if you get the Quantum Moon ending by taking the core there and asking you how long you've been there (A few minutes or years?). You exist in all states simultaneously, alive and dead. So, in a way, Solanum was likely only there for a few minutes to a few hours but is eternally entangled with it because of a spilt in self, hence why she knows she's dead. No matter when you left the moon, you would likely face the Supernova regardless.

I honestly found the "ending" so much more impactful and the stranger just alot more mysterious because you can't even read there righting. I guess after exploring the nomai ruins it just felt like a perfect shakeup, not keeping it exactly the same. Don't get me wrong the base game was incredible to explore, but in my opinion EoTE was just as good (also the horror aspect I know alot of ow players probably weren't looking for but I LOVED it)

I do know outer wilds is a good game. And I know that it is very likely the best game. But I don't like it personally for one reason, I don't care about lore or story's in video games, or just entertainment in general. I play video games for the gameplay. And the reason why I am even writing this comment is because, somehow, despite this, the game had me coming back. Even though every time I said to myself the game isn't for me it had me coming back the next day and I genuinely don't know how.

Got so moved by this game, that I wrote a poem about it (spoilers below):
Go jump into your rocket and aim for Attlerock,
now start your fiery engine you'll lift in one great chock.
Though if you miss the target you'll be among the stars
you're in the far-off future, you're further off than Mars.
And then the Interloper which races to and fro,
the sun it quickly passes, but further off gets slow.
It is an icy comet that melts as it gets hot,
before it freezes over, go visit on the spot.
Upon its rocky surface the ice is like a shield,
beneath it is a ghastly, a monstrous chamber seal'd.
It is a place forbidden that crosses our skies,
a secret grotto hidden beneath a shell of ice.
Another path to travel would be towards the sun
and closest it in orbit you'll find a station spun.
It is a tempting target, it is a glowing goal,
but as you travel closer your flesh will turn to coal!
Another place to get to would be the hourglass-twins,
a pair of planets fighting; the one with most sand wins!
The sand is over-flowing and rushes to and fro,
all while the sand is glowing and Chert is yelling "LO!"
On Ash there is a structure, on Amber is a lab,
and you will have to figure what happens if you stab
the fabric of your space-time which you can do down there,
but I will tell you this much, I won't be with you here.
Perhaps a greenish planet caught in your four-eyed gaze,
you wonder what lies hidden beneath this thickly haze.
You'll find a stormy ocean and islands floating by,
they, taken by the weather, are thrown up in the sky.
You'll also find this Gabbro down on the Giant's Deep,
he lies upon this hammock, he is so deep asleep.
But soon the wind will get him and throw him into space,
and he takes it so easy all with a smiling face.
In orbit is a station that races by so fast,
and yet, in violation of all this time that pass'd,
is yet in operation, though shattered into bits,
it searches for the Quanta that stole them of their wits.
A piece of it has fallen below the stormy sea,
beneath this stormy current, that's where it's found to be.
By flashes it is shielded, an orb around the core,
and thread it carefully, or else you will be sore.
There is another planet, that you will want to see,
and this is Brittle Hollow, to this we both agree.
It has a heart of darkness, of lava is its moon
it has a city hanging, and this will be your boon.
But travel even farther, go further on your flight,
though it is even harder, you must now leave the light,
this is the very purpose to which all this was born,
this place is very icy, and over-grown with thorns.
It's larger on the inside, it's all filled up with mist,
and there are horrid monsters which you will not have missed.
In here, you'll search a signal, someone is calling out,
but something else will happen and this is the last shout.
The sun goes supernova, it's starting to contract,
to this there will be nothing to do to counteract.
But this is not the ending, you wonder then of why,
another chance be given you after you have died.

Outer wilds story is good and exploring is very cool it's an amazing interactive story but it's a bad game. The first play through the gameplay is good and fun, the space and gravity mechanics is great but the moment you finish the story you have nothing to do. The entire progression is knowledge so when you finish the game so finish the game, there is no hard mode or side quests and for me it not great. I'm almost never play a game for the second time but when I do play a game I want to play for a lot of time so side quests or hard challenges so for me it's a bad thing that you totally finish the game after 20 hours.
    SPOILERS:
And there is another thing, I got stuck right on the end. I couldn't get to the 6th location of the moon and I didn't find the code to the mothership. When I got to the mothership I had the black hole engine thing and the story meant that if I die now then it's a real game over (on the real start of the game I tested if there is fall damage and I died and codent continue, I needed to push new game. So I really fought that if I die I need to start over and in dark bramble dieing is easy) so I looked up the code and finished the game and I couldn't play it again to and for me its ruined the ending but don't get me wrong I still love the game I just think that the end is to hard and dasent have enough hints.
Plus the ending in the eye of the universe is wired and dasent make sense
    9/10

Spoilers for the Solanum Question he asks (this response is copied from reddit, I didn't come up with this explanation, but they explained it well)
For Solanum, She's now permanently entangled with the moon, ceasing to act as an observer and is just as quantum as the skeletons or trees we find near quantum shards
She speaks as if she's just arrived, that this is her first visit that all Nomai make when they come of age, so no time at all has passed for her, although she does admit she also has a theory that her journey has ended and she isn't entirely alive anymore. If you disable the loop then sit on the 6th location, letting yourself also die in 5/6ths of the states you'll have the same thing happen to you :
How long have you been here? Minutes? Years?!
You are unsure but it seems your journey has reached its end.

I am not arguing that you are wrong, but I've tried it twice, and it was so boring, I couldn't last more than 1 hour both times.
