@@MegaTriumph1 It's to cool the hull and keep the steel plating from weakening and warping. Its estimated to be about 1200 degrees inside, which is near the melting point of steel. Also, at that temperature you get fire flashbacks, once the fire gets a bit of oxygen.
They would not target this guy for no reason. This does not happen when an entire ship burns down like that. I cant remember one incident in my life time that a ship has burned down like this. If it was an accident they would have said so. It would make no sense to point the blame. Some military people this is the only job they can get because they are no right upstairs. If they cant produce evidence that he did it, it will go nowhere just knowing someone did a crime is not enough. The fire may have been intentional but now you have got to prove it.

I served on LHD4 Boxer. They say it started down in lower v. That area when not on deployment is kind of a place all area. So yes it could be boxes and boxes of paper and shit. But how it started is what I'm wondering. There are huge fire suppression systems on that ship. I'm thinking someone started it on purpose.

She was undergoing overhaul. Most of the watertight doors and hatches are locked open to allow welding cables, air hoses etc, to pass through. No way to contain fire and smoke.

@@oldfucker68 You are right the Wasp class ships have been LHD certified, but they derive from the Tarawa class ships that had been designated as LHA, that is, assault ships, then we chose a very aggressive LHD Helicopter landing ships and floodable basin (Dock). Fortunately, as you say, the Bonomme Richard was not anchored and therefore we were able to tow it away from other ships and not put the fire on them ...

A Tarawa LHA had more or less the same tasks as a LHD Bonhomme Richard. I think it's just politically correct ... The term Landing Helicopter Dock is much less aggressive than Landing Helicopter Assault

Fires on ships happen all the time due to corrosion. It’s electrical + fuel fires that are super tough to contain.
