- Scenes of the four day efforts by Sailors and Federal firefighters in extinguishing a fire on board the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) at Naval Base San Diego.
The fire started aboard the ship on the morning of July 12, 2020, while it was moored pier side at Naval Base San Diego. The fire was finally extinguished on July 16th, but caused extensive damage to the USS Bonhomme Richard that makes it uncertain if the warship will sail again.
More than 60 sailors and civilians were treated for minor injuries, heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation.

massive neglect, incompetence, no training, lack of a functioning command, is what caused this fire
I spent 5 years in the Navy as an HT/DC 1986-1991. With the equipment the Navy had at their disposal, this is the biggest Mongolian cluster f*@$# I've ever seen! I can never be convinced that there will ever be enough excuses for losing a ship to a fire, especially while pierside! I was aboard battleship USS IOWA on April 19th, 1989 as a DC2. We had 550 pounds of gunpowder detonate and sweep through 11 decks. But you know what? We saved our ship and we were at sea, contained the fire to only the interior of the turret and barbette! We had OBAs (not A bad) and only a limited few firefighting ensembles as they were new. Most of us were in our dungarees and WWII-era battle helmets. 5 days to put out a fire after allowing it to gut the ship?! Unacceptable! Ever hear of material condition Zebra? Yeah. Maybe if it had been set, with the right people in charge, perhaps they could have put the damn fire out the first day! Need a lesson? Look at WWII carriers attacked by kamikazes. USS Franklin was tore all to hell, but her crew saved her and got her home! These patsies nowadays couldn't put out a dumpster fire! It's embarrassing to America, and a waste of taxpayers money. Some folks need to be held accountable. Start with the CO, XO, DCA, Repair Division Chief, and on-scene leaders and let the heads roll where they may! China and Russia probably laughing and making jokes about our modern Navy's firefighting capabilities!

Nah, not yet, they are still investigating it.
I don't know if the ATF assists in investigations like this normally, but they are assisting the Navy in the investigation.

Having the ATF involved in a military investigation is VERY unusual. In fact I've never heard of that particular mix in a joint investigation. I'll certainly be keeping my eyes on this story.

USS Bon Homme Richard. My child is a Sailor, on her. It’s like watching your house burn down. I’m glad everyone is ok. My child had duty that night. In the area the fire broke out.

Its a good thing this happened during peacetime so that they get some experience in how to deal with serious ship fires!

I was attached to this command back in 2013!!! So, so sad..................
What I see is everyone standing around cracking jokes. What I don’t see is everyone in ships company with an OBA or other firefighting gear FINDING the fire and putting it out. Why is there no sense of urgency while this multi-billion dollar ship becomes a charcoal briquette? (Flight deck firefighting - Treasure Island 1987)
How's the situation now?
how can there be a fire without hostilities on a warship ???
And what will happen if the ship will participate in the war?
