Thank you for doing your video. I was considering getting the GoPro Hero 9 and housing for a scuba trip our family is going on, but wasn't quite sure. You sold us. Thank you again for taking the time to do a great review.
Looking forward to taking the Hero 9 and the underwater case diving the next time I'm on Holiday in the USA. In the mean time I'll just have to settle for the waters around Northern Ireland.
Thanks Steve for the in-depth video while diving with the GoPro 9. Audio sounded pretty good after a few seconds once you surfaced and the water had a second to drain. Been diving with GoPro's for many years. Great cameras for diving especially at night with dive lights attached!!
This was awesome. I just ordered the GoPro 9. Was just telling my wife I want to try it out in the waters out in Catalina. Then I see your video, now it’s a must. Thank you 👍👍
Steve, I always enjoyed diving the dive park when I lived in California. Even though I use video lights when I am filming underwater, I would be interested on watching you edit this footage. I have never used the flat underwater. Guess you didn't see the many resident Wreckfish (Giant Black Seabass) while there. Thanks for the content.
Great video Steve. Of particular interest was you test of the 'uncased' GoPro9 down to 20m!! .. without any noticeable damage. Nice to know there is a bit of leeway. Cheers from Downunder!
Would you recommend this camera for just light snorkelling and maybe some diving. Would just love to take some photos off the fish and videos. Or save some money and get the 8 ?
All these videos show shallow dives, with basically clear waters. It would be useful to have more feedback on more important depths (40-60mt) and with more limited visibility, so as to understand how the small sensor of the GoPro behaves
Video and audio looked and sounded great Steve! Excellent information about the Hero 9 capabilities! I'm a bit surprised the colors popped so much underwater in the kelp forests without using lights. That was a most unusual stand-up or swim-up you did to Sig-Out. WELL DONE!
Thanks Thom. My secret sauce: I used FCP's Color Curves, - Luma curve for getting crisp shadows and the green curve for reducing the green in the highlights making the water appear more blue while accentuating the oranges in the kelp. I did however use the Joby beamo light on that last shot of the red gorgonian -
Hey Steve, great review. Wondering how you feel about the camera now, more than a year later. Any issues, problems? I'm looking into picking one up. I've seen a lot of negative reviews about audio popping issues, touch screen issues etc.
You recommend using an extending pole. The problem would be how do I take a photo with the pole extended out 30”? Any ideas. Thanks. Very Good Video. Don
Hello... can you tell me which brand and type handle you are using at 1:00? I can’t seem to find a handle that is usable in water AND extendable like the one you’re showing.
Two years ago I went snorkeling and rented a GoPro Fusion without a housing. Every video sucked. I think I might go with a normal GoPro and a housing next time
I took my 9 under 6 ft of water in ocean and came up hit a huge wave and water got into battery compartment. It was toast. I didn't have the waterproof case. But now I bought one and always bring it with me.
Hi! Im really excited about starting to use my GoPro Hero 9 and thank you for the information. I was curious if you could give me tips in regards to post tho. Im about to purchase a computer to do editing instead of my iPad pro and wondered if you had any recommendations on computer and editing software. Thank you again!
Hi Steve. If you use a red filter, would you still recommend the same settings such as flat, 4k and 30? And what about the white balance, no need to go 5500k then right? Lastly, since you did this video over 2 years ago, would you say that now the newer iPhones can play back the 5k? Thank you!
If you are snorkeling not scuba diving, you really don't need a red filter. The important thing is that whatever white balance you choose, it should be locked so the color does not shift during recording. I shoot at 5120 x 2880 on the Hero9 and transfer my GoPro clips directly to my iPhone 13 Pro. They play back at 5.2K that was shot on the GoPro
Saltwater is not the best friend for the gopro. make sure you rinse it off in fresh water when you're done. I just cooked my H8 in the Bahamas. luckily the GP subscription is getting me to the H9 now.
Having just received my Hero 9 and underwater housing, I’m feeling disappointed that you can’t change the settings when in the dive case. Going from a 4 to a 9 this is very disappointing as I can change all the settings on the 4!
Sorted, load up presets and press mode followed by shutter button, then use the mode button to scroll through the presets and then press shutter to select the preset you want.
Hi! I just got a gopro9 and I was confused about how to use it underwater. So, basically, you are saying that if I am not going deeper than 10m, I don't need to use a case? Also, can it be used in any water? Thank you.
Is it possible to access the media to check the pictures that I have taken, without removing the camera from the housing? I could never figure out how to do that, so I always can only check if a picture is good after getting to the surface :(
If you stay between 10 and 20 feet with mostly wide shots no. For the close up shots of the sea fan and eel a light really helps. I use a Joby Beamo light - it's under $100, rechargeable and tested to 30 meters.
hi Steve, thanks for the video, i have a question, did it ever happened to you that while underwater, the H9 only records sound? its a bit frustrating when i get back home to check my videos, and its already the 2nd time it happens, a bunch of sound files instead of the gopro Mp4... any advice or solution? ive check settings already but theres nothing there. would it be a shortcut like pressing the record button for a bit of time, or just a quick tap... by the way the only setting i have changed is the screens off during record, and my preset image mode. let me know, if you have any advice, thanks
when the camera first came out there were no filters for it. I recommend these: gopro.com/en/us/shop/mounts-accessories/polarpro-divemaster-filter-kit-hero9-black-protective-housing/APPRO-006.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwn6GGBhADEiwAruUcKu9HAAWmR9XudkyBUYfLtwNMHvDc-1sl6PHJoSdmlzxfMgczxr2GphoCd9QQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Thanks. At the time I purchased, there were no filters yet available. So I corrected the footage in Final Cut to adjust for the excessive green in the water.
Hey Steve great video! Question, do I need to set some things on my Go Pro9 before submerging it into the water without a housing? Or it's good to go? Thanks!
This was awesome! So helpful, I've been considering the GoPro 9 and you sold me!
The microphone on the go pro hero 9 is so underrated it’s truly incredible audio quality

Hey by chance do know the name of the selfie stick your using
I’ve been trying to figure out if this camera need the housing and you helped me a lot from this video thank you.
Hang on a minute - the sea fan at 6:46 is lit with lighting - what lighting???

This is so so immensely helpful, thank you!

Awesome video! So that’s what you see in front of the Casino at Catalina? Wow! Footage turned out great. I gotta head over there! 👍👍
Thank you. Nice tutorial. What is the track you used for the background music during your dive? Mesmerizing..
Great video. Learned a few things. Will definitely have to try when I get a gopro.
Your video is so awesome 👏 Thank you! I just bought a GoPro 9 for traveling to Maldives from US in May 2nd 😄😄. So excited about that
@DiMi: I feel satisfied with my new Gopro. Video is very clear underwater. Camera with high pixel photos.
Where did you buy your floating selfy stick?
All these videos show shallow dives, with basically clear waters. It would be useful to have more feedback on more important depths (40-60mt) and with more limited visibility, so as to understand how the small sensor of the GoPro behaves

Have the photo set for timer mode - 3 or 10 seconds. Press button, extend pole, wait for timer.

Awesome. What settings you used for this underwater clip. It’s so perfect
Are the settings you recommend still good to use if you don’t want/don’t know how to do post-video/photo touch ups.
Excellent video
I just bought mine 2 days ago 'go pro 9' but the battery didnt last for atleast one hour😪😪
If you want the battery to last longer, turn off the front-facing screen.
@@rippleguys thanks my brother..appreciate it...
Can you help with recommending a floating selfie stick for diving with a GoPro?
www.nu-bear.com/

Nice video. What was your setting for sharpening?
Great Video Steve!
What do you have against showing how to open housing?
Just watch how to put the camera in the housing in reverse!
Thank you
You can edit 5k video in IOS with LumaFusion.
Great video, and wonderful footage of the dive spot in Catalina - thanks for sharing! Can you comment as to which selfie stick you had? Thanks again!

@@rippleguys Thanks!
Hi steve, so it‘s no need to buy an extra red filter to go diving with all the settings on the gopro hero 9?
If you plan on taking your gopro below 15 feet, I highly recommend a red filter
Thank you so much for this! This is so helpful and easy to follow!
Great video! Do you need a case when snorkeling?
Only if you are going deeper than 30 ft.
Ok great! Also is the "Handler" GoPro floating stick the best option for snorkeling?
Hey Steve, Thanks for bringing the nice video. Can we use Go pro 10 under water without any protective cover?
10 has the same body as the Hero 9. - it has a limit of 10 meters
I took my 9 under 6 ft of water in ocean and came up hit a huge wave and water got into battery compartment. It was toast. I didn't have the waterproof case. But now I bought one and always bring it with me.

Thanks for the video. Any problems with it overheating in a case on a scubadive?
I've taken it on many dives and it has never overheated.

Yes, as long as you don't go below 10m - no housing required. You can use it in fresh or salt water.
Thank you so much for replying 🙌🏻
How about for screen protectors, is it okay to use it underwater even with the screen protectors?
I always want to use it in my RUclips videos but I was afraid.... But no more

No, the button on the side only cycles through the shooting modes.
Great video! Have you tried any straps to your BC or anything? Instead of just the “fishy stick”
I'm not sure what you mean.
@@rippleguys She means, do you use a strap of sorts for your fishy stick? Is there a strap attached?
Thats good stuff Steve, thanks for sharing!
Nice review! May I ask what handle this is? I can’t find one both floating and extended.
This is the only one I recommend: www.nu-bear.com/

Which pole are you using?
How come my hero 9 can I lying go up to 2.7k resolution
Thanks for the vlog!
Thanks Steve great
About how many hours battery life can the hero9 shoot in 5k?
One guy who reviewed on it was for about 1 hr video shooting.
How do i avoid the water on lens issue when i resurface and want to shoot without blobby blurry things? Is there no way to do that?
keep a norwex microfiber cloth in your BC pocket, then use it to wipe off the lens.
@@rippleguys this works even if wet?
@@stephw1363 Just wring it out at the surface to remove the water from the fibers, but its the fibers that work wonders

did you have a red filter or everything was fix at post?
The red filters were not available when I shot this. All color correction was done in Final Cut Pro
