I know a guy with untreated paranoid schizophrenia/drug addict who lives with his mom at 33 and whenever he said some random insane statement his mom would just smile and ignore it. He strangled his mom to death in January. Don't ignore mental health crises especially of loved ones
@@guesswho1886 his mom knew but I think her way to cope was pretend nothing is wrong and also he refused to take any meds or treatment his whole life. Jarvis order would have solved that but it's beaucratic bs at that point. And thanks, it's been bothering me all year every day.
My son has scizophrenia. Always refusing medication because "there's nothing wrong with me, I'm not crazy". 9 months ago he acknowledged his psychotic episodes and agreed to go to crisis center. Medication has made a miracle happen. I pray for everyone with this disease.

Please if you have a mentally Ill family member put the guns in a safe, put sharp knives in a spot known only to you , lock up meds & razor blades. Too many suicides & school shootings have happened because kids & young adults got the parents weapon. My co worker’s son lost his girlfriend in a car accident & she knew how hard he had taken a former break up ,she took a week off to spend with him.Her husband a PI put all the fire arms in his locked safe in his home office & stayed home with the 21 year old only son the 2nd week ,when he went out for a gallon of milk his son broke the lock on his dads office door & opened the safe he knew the combo to & managed to take his own life sadly,before his dad got back from a 20 minute trip to the store. It could go like this guy ,with total hallucinations .This young man in the story should have been an inpatient until his medication was keeping his psychosis in check ,not just sent home with that diagnosis & some pills.
Jiles, thank you for the hotline numbers at the end of these videos. A friend and a family member each have gone through crises this month and I was able to quickly get them on the line with someone who could listen and advise. You have definitely helped more people than you know. Love the t-shirt.

A friend of mine survived a home invasion in which his brother was killed. He also had the opportunity to dispatch the killer early on but froze up. He was so guilt ridden, he eventually ended up deleting himself in 2018 after a decade of guilt and severe depression. Tough spot. RIP Ricky
Almost everyone short circuits when they have to make that choice. That means they aren't psychopaths. Nobody should be ashamed for thinking twice about taking a life.

Treating mentally ill people by immediately removing them from society isn't exactly going to encourage mentally ill people to show their symptoms to others. Iv met a terrifying amount of people who I truly believe have the lack of empathy and the capacity and sometimes even the opportunity to commit a mass shooting but we live in a society that doesn't detain people for being bat sht insane but instead only after a crime is committed. "I want to hurt myself or others" ---> 72 your hold "OK I was just joking and don't want to hurt anyone" That's literally the only barrier separating you and insane people and that's if someone in their life cares enough to report it in the first place...
You cannot just have someone hospitalized because they “say” things or make threats. You have to request a 5150 and it may not get approved. Then if it is approved, it’s only a 72 hour hold. Then what? He’s also an adult. You cannot force an adult to be hospitalized simply because they have a diagnosis or lack there of. There’s literally nothing you can do until it’s too late. And hopefully it’s just some public nudity and obscenities and not the absolute worst case scenario.
I worked for Adult Protective Services and it's not easy to get people the care they need. Beds in state hospitals are limited. You can't force somebody to go to Community Care. Most of the time it's emergency room and then quickly released.
Here in Brazil, a schizophrenic guy was threatening to kill his mom with a knife so cops were in place. The guy got out the house and started to go in the direction of the cops waving the knife so the cop ordered him to stop 3 times then he shot the guy's foot. The crazy attacker stopped, sit down and started to scream in pain but he was alive. The cop basically saved his life that day.
Here in the US (depending on the cop) that guy would've most likely gotten a kill shot or multiple shots from the police. I'm glad the officers where you are dealt with that situation with a bit of empathy and understanding.
@@AisforAtheist though I agree with you almost all officers are not afforded the luxury of time to try to neutralize a knife or gun wielding maniac through non-fatal means. Stephen's overindulgent parents should have taken that damned shotgun away from him and then put him on medication before they brought him along on the trip. This tragedy was entirely preventable.

Who knows if they already feared him or or if they couldn't accept the fact that their son could be that violent even in a state of psychosis. The whole thing is tragic from beginning to end. While I agree with your point on cops in dangerous situations to an extent, I do wish non-lethal force would be used more often.
As weird as it sounds, once or twice a week me and my husband will make a bath salt and bubble bath and light candles , have little treats and drinks and listen to 2 of your episodes. Its probably my favorite days of my week. Thank you for what you do! Forever a fan ❤

That’s like the case in Canada, of a schizophrenic man who killed, decapitated, and cannibalized the body of another man, on a Greyhound bus. The killer is already out, and living in an undisclosed location, under a new name. It’s absolutely baffling.
Friend of mine in Wellington had to wait TWO YEARS for counseling and to even start the process of getting his ADHD addressed. In the meantime he lived in poverty without meds or continuous support from WINZ so his health deteriorated - he lost most of his teeth, got scary thin, lost thousands of dollars and developed a drug problem. We need better preventative care/intervention across the board :/
Going through survivor's guilt is horrible. You can't reason with it, you can't talk yourself out of it. You know the thoughts are ridiculous but you just can't stop them from happening. This is going to sound dramatic but I think I would rather parish than go through that again. I know I'm not alone.
Hello Jiles....I must say you certainly do a hella lot of research to be able to find all these cases you speak of. I guess one.....like me...has never heard nearly one tenth of the stories you bring us. This is only one of the reasons I watch and listen to your channel. You have so much knowledge to give us and it's so enlightening to be able to hear about cases I've never heard of. @@msr305his is not always true. Sometimes for people in those situations have a difficulty to even find appropriate help or be taken seriously. These types of diagnoses generally (unless talking about growing out of certain mental/hormonal states from puberty) will always be be there. The mask of medicine is not always a strong barrier.
as someone with schizophrenia the medication they have for it nowadays is genuinely mindblowing science. if you find the right one at the right dose and take it consistently, it can change your life. some meds come in shot form and you only have to get them once a month/every few months, which is great for folks prone to going off them. early intervention is key, but many people (both the schizophrenic person and those around them) do not take psychosis seriously until it’s too late. when i was still living with my parents and had access to firearms, i went into an episode where my brain was telling me that i had to stand guard with a shotgun all night and not go to sleep or else everyone would die. to this day my family still treats it as a funny little story. i don’t talk to them much anymore lol
@@GeologicalNerdmedication is always going to be needed to treat schizophrenia. you can’t talk therapy your way out of your brain mis/over-firing serotonin signals. of course it’s never smart to only rely on medication but it’s the first line of defense for a reason
I dated someone in my early 20s who had this terrible disease. His parents did everything they could to keep him safe, but there is only so much you can do with an adult child. He was the most amazing boyfriend for a year, but then he stopped taking his medication and a different side emerged. This is so tragic. If you've ever been around someone with this disease, you know just how much their mind tricks them. It's horrible. The real person would probably have never have done anything like this. But, the illness made him do something unthinkable. It is so horrible. All these people, and Steven's illness turning him into someone else. I also understand why the parents didn't take the gun when they discovered it. A person with this illness often still resembles the person they knew. The person that would never harm. It is just so horrible what this illness does to the mind and sometimes to others. However... I do not agree that he should ever be released from hospital. It is clear what his illness can do to him. He just cannot be in society.
I don't know if I have Schizophrenia or not. Nobody takes me seriously because I'm not saying that I think I'm Jesus, or that I can move clouds with my mind.
I worked in mental health for many years. I have so much sympathy for those who suffer from it, but at the same time, schizophrenia is can so often be unpredictable. One patient I'd dealt with for nearly a year, a young man with whom I felt we had a friendship, one day heard a voice that told him to attack me. He grabbed me and through me into a wall, breaking my knee...
He shouldn't be among the living anymore. Mental illness or not, he's shown that he is a danger and that will never change. Not even the staff at facilities he could be locked in deserve to be at risk by having to be around him. He needs to be gone.
@@justlucky8254 I totally agree. A lot of folks live with mental illness, including schizophrenia, and never hurt a single person. Those who prove like this guy to be LETHAL should be PERMANENTLY removed from society, whether put in institutions or prison or put to death. The public should never be put at risk by them being released.
I have never come across this case before but I won't forget it now. What an horrific tragedy. As someone who has suffered from mental health issues for most of my life - albeit that they cause me to self-harm rather than harm others - I think there needs to be more education about mental issues and support for those people who are living with someone who is suffering. I think that most people's natural instinct is to believe that they can help the people they love regardless of their problems but mental health conditions can be unpredictable and irrational - that's the 'nature of the beast' - and sometimes no amount of love and support will change that. So, whilst I don't understand why that gun wasn't secured after Stephen was first found with it, I feel for his parents in other respects for trying to support him, even though that can sometimes do more harm that good. As for Stephen himself, I feel terribly sad that he has this condition and feel that the jury was right to take this into account when reaching their verdict. However, nothing should take away from the other lives he destroyed and although I believe that he needs help not outright punishment, I think he requires constant close supervision having already had one lethal psychotic episode and if that means a loss of freedom, then so be it. No one, not even the best psychologist in the world, can predict or really understand what triggers people to do something like this, even if we can understand the basics of how paranoid schizophrenia affects the mind. That being the case, I don't think Stephen can never be considered 'cured' after such a severe and lethal breakdown.
He had plenty of help and support. I also have friends and family both with schizophrenia and none of them are dangerous. What is the difference between someone who harms themselves and someone who harms others? I believe that they just aren’t worth it. Lock them up and throw away the key.
He evidently was not taking his meds or the meds were not working for some time and as the mom of a schizophrenic him claiming they are coming to get him was the last sign among I'm sure previous clues of off his meds or a new med was not working him getting to that point it was only a matter of very near future thst something dangerous was ahead..immediate emergency help was desperately needed that moment. What a sad tragic story
My neighbor was a man in his 40s, nice at first. Then it was two years of terror as he kept accusing me of being a spy, putting cameras in his walls, telling the cops ghosts were laughing at him…he was evicted and kept sneaking back on property to break in and bang on my windows at 3am. Nobody took it seriously and cops always let him go or took too long. He’s now vagrant roaming the streets and I always feel scared not knowing if he has a mind or a soul left anymore. His last Facebook post after the fact was “I’m so sorry for everyone I hurt I don’t know what’s wrong with me please help”. My god.
poor fucking guy, it's heartbreaking that people can have serious mental collapses like that and no one in a position to do so will get them help. the system in so many countries absolutely fails its citizens with mental health services and it's how we end up with cases like this- no one takes it seriously enough to get them help. on the same note- i am sorry you had to deal with such prolonged terror from him. i can't imagine going through that even after the guy was evicted.
Hey there boss, a good story for this season would be the Peter Falconeo (sp?) case from Australia. Ivan Milat gets most of the props for the inspiration for the wolf creek movies but the above mentioned story is where the Mick Taylor psycho outback killer character in a roo shooters Ute comes from. “Never go out in the bush without a gun, you never know who’s out there.”
The fact that his mothers response to being told he had just fucked two animals was what it was…it’s hard to have sympathy for the parents. That was her reaction to her son telling her he had sex with a fucking cat?! “Oh, Steven, you silly boy, go wash up for dinner!” That in itself is absolutely astonishing. I’m well aware that symptoms of schizophrenia allegedly don’t show up until someone is in their early 20s, but I have always wondered if that’s actually the case or if the families of people with schizophrenia are so ableist and in denial that they deliberately ignore signs their progeny is seriously mentally ill in their childhood. Especially a disorder like schizophrenia, that is likely the most debilitating and terrifying mental disorder one can have. It’s a “death sentence” in many ways to a parent that has hopes and dreams for their kid when they grow up. I believe many people think they can pray or love their child back to being “normal” again, that they will grow out of it and be able to live the life they envision for them. The reality is going without treatment and ignoring schizophrenia just makes it WORSE. It’s going to make that condition debilitating for their child because they’ve learned no tools besides hiding and masking it throughout their aging to adulthood. They learn how to pretend to appear fine, normal, etc. But they aren’t medicated, getting treatment with a professional, learning ways they can gain a measure of independence and live on their own in places that provide psychological care on the premises but are set up very much like apartment buildings, giving ppl a measure of privacy and freedom. My great uncle had schizophrenia and looking through photographs of my grandmother’s family when he was a child….I can see that he was clearly “odd” already even as a kid. I think alot of children are misdiagnosed as having adhd or sometimes autism, but grow up and eventually get properly diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizo-spectrum disorders. Unfortunately when they go untreated, some people can develop violent tendencies. And of course, I believe they develop a certain degree of hostility and resentment for the world and their families for not getting them any real help. They oscillate between terror at their hallucinations and paranoid beliefs, and confusion during moments of clarity because they don’t understand what’s happening and why others don’t see/hear what they do. To them it’s all very real, and the world around them is basically persecuting them. Part of me understands how shit not only our mental health care in this country is, but also how desperately lacking most of us are in basic knowledge about mental health disorders, and how to recognize them. But a lot of me holds anger towards the parents of people like this for failing to get them help. They raised him. They knew something was wrong long before he was actually diagnosed with schizophrenia. And once he DID get diagnosed, they still didn’t get him proper help. He was clearly unmedicated during this trip, but they still brought him along? Knowing he would be in unfamiliar surrounds and around a group of people he already wasn’t fond of. You can’t just rip someone with schizophrenia out of their daily routine and take them on a trip to a cabin and think that’s going to be fine. They need a routine, stability, they need to feel safe and comfortable around people they’re going to have to be around. Too many parents care more about the idea of their child they want to project to the world than they do about the health and sanity of their actual child. Adult child or minor. His mothers reaction to being told in front of company that he fucked a cat and a dog says everything to me.
Don't forget this was in 1997, the general public was not really very aware of what paranoid schizophrenia was, unless you had someone you know who suffered with it. Even if the parents were aware that he was not taking his medication, being an adult they could not force him to take it, and unless he is sectioned by the police there is not much they could about it. My friends 40 year old son is also suffering from schizophrenia, and medicated, but he could easily overpower her if he so wished. There needs to be much more money invested in mental health world wide.

The mother survived from what I can find online. She should have been sent to prison for the rest of her life. She knew her son was mentally unstable and didn’t make sure the weapon was secured. Steven didn’t really understand what he was doing (I’m NOT excusing him, just stating reality), but she definitely knew he was dangerous.
It was the son who killed everyone. Not her. She made a mistake but her son is the problem. I have no sympathy for people like that. I don’t care about their “mental health”… if they refuse to take medication they shouldn’t be allowed to live outside of high security mental facilities.

When you have a child with schizophrenia and you love him as you love all of your children but he or she becomes unstable and suddenly starts not making sense, it is shocking but parents aren’t normally afraid of our children. @@ElaAusDemTal I wouldn't. Most people wouldn't. Apparently this behavior wasn't new to them, or he was doing such weird shit at home that this wasn't unusual. They should have gotten him help WAY before this happened. My only point is that they had no way of knowing that this particular weekend was going to be the one where he clicked. Personally, as soon as I saw him cleaning a gun, I would have taken it from him or had my husband do it, or when he came out and said what he did about the cat and dog, I would have excused myself, my husband, and my son and left immediately with apologies all the way around. They still didn't have any way of knowing that was going to be the day. And one of the neighbors mentioned that gunshots were not unusual to hear in that area and nobody else was concerned enough to make sure the gun was taken either. So blame them for not getting him the appropriate help, just not this particular incident. His disease is an extremely unpredictable one and you can't always tell when someone is going to flip their script.

I worked as a counselor in a day program with severely mentally ill people for seven years. They were not monsters, but very sick, and symptoms caused agony. The delusions and hallucinations experienced seem real, because their brain misfires providing them skewed messages. We need to do a better job of educating loved ones and the public, and keep weapons away from those who have a great risk of harming themselves or others.
You are correct, there have been studies that show that brain structure changes as Schizophrenia advances. For all we know this guy didn't see the people that he was unaliving as people but demons or some other severe hallucinations. I can't imagine living with a disease that causes the brain to constantly betray reality. A friend of mine from high-school got Schizophrenia in his twenties. He changed from a gentle lucid human to a person with severe psychosis and hallucinations he saw demons and dragons everywhere. Fortunately he got the treatment that he needed before something like this in the video happened, however he did attack a couple people (one being his mother) which landed him in a psychiatric facility where he was officially diagnosed and put on appropriate meds.
My dad once told me, "never... ever... trust anyone with a mono brow" (eyebrows that join) It was the best advice he ever told me... Other than dont trust an electrician with no eyebrows which has also served me well in life.

I hate cases like this because while maintaining your mental health is your own personal responsibility it sucks to have something out of your control rule your life and cause irreparable harm to those you loved. No one can truly have closure from something like this; not the victims nor the perpetrator.
Maintaining one’s mental health is possible when you have disorders that don’t cause psychosis. I have OCD and am fine living alone. But I also don’t experience severe hallucinations or paranoid thoughts as part of my disorder. People that have severe Bipolar I, schizophrenia, schizotypal disorder, schizoaffective disorder often CANNOT manage their illness alone. They are often unable to understand just how bad their disorder is. Unless someone was diagnosed early and provided with proper support from family to learn how to regulate medication, psychiatric visits, etc., they often do not have the tools necessary to do so. They never learned how, basically. It’s fucked up, because those are the people who often get abandoned by friends and family as they age and their symptoms get worse. Then they get stuck in a loop of homelessness, in and out of psychosis, and often frequent contact with law enforcement/arrests. Tbh we can’t expect people suffering with that level of illness to take care of themselves and just ignore it, it’s our job as human beings to fix the mental health crisis and that involves community support.

I'm glad that I read your, much better informed comment, before I did. Whilst I 100% agree that these sorts of cases are extremely tragic for the victims, the idea that mentally ill people, who are in a state of psychosis, have any clue as to how to be "responsible" for their hallucinations is, at best, naive. I have been in relationships and known people with severe bipolar disorder and I find the frustration and "responsibility", lies with those around the sick individual, be it doctors, family, friends etc, to accept that the person needs help way before it gets to the point of full on paranoid psychosis. I had no help at all with my partner and it never went this far but it certainly didn't help that no one took his declining mental health seriously and expected him to "snap out of it"
@@nixpuk75yes, I agree. I think humanity as a whole is still pretty clueless/ill - equipped when it comes to severe mental illness, and mental illness in general. It's a difficult one, cos at the end of the day, this man murdered several people and traumatised the others to the point of it affecting their daily lives, and some justice should still be done, and in my opinion I think he was given a very lenient sentence. Especially that he's now out and free to live his life, and the fact that he tried to get away with deceiving/lying by omission to get his tutoring job doesn't sit well with me. I think he should've gotten life in that forensic hospital, because surely this could happen again easily, if the monitoring of him eases up and he decides to go off his meds, the risk is surely quite high? I don't know. Its just unfair that he gets to live life as a free man, even though he took that away from countless people affected by his actions. I just hope the close monitoring of him continues, and that he is able to be rehabilitated, sees the error of his ways and the importance of his medication and monitoring!

Wow! That was an intense case I've never heard of. A couple of Australian cases you might want to look into are the Monsters of Malcolm Naden ( make sure you look into how he lived in a zoo and killed a Galapagos Tortoise and stole bananas from the elephants) and also the case of Anthony Waterlow.

My children’s pediatrician told a young man’s mother for YEARS to get him help but she ignored him. One day the young man about 26 yr old drove his mom’s car and burst into the doctors office and stabbed our beloved pediatrician. The young man took off in the car and the footage of the chase was actually shown on the news and the police were able to do stop sticks and stop and apprehended him. Our pediatrician He survived but came inches away from death. I saw him at a community event because I know his daughter and her kids go to my son’s school and he’s ok but hasn’t fully recovered mentally. He is a good man, who has done so much for this community by going out to a very poor and mostly black farming community and doing free or reduced fee work for this community. I am afraid he will suffer mentally from this forever. All because mom didn’t want to face the boy now a man’s schizophrenia. The young man is institutionalized and I don’t think there are any way he will ever get out.
My daughter's father was schizophrenic and it claimed his life, as it does most people who suffer with it. Its no joke, and some people don't choose to be monsters. So much love to all of those familie, and even this monster.
I am absolutely not blaming the good guy with a gun for not shooting but man he could have stopped this guy by immediately putting a bullet in him. I personally don’t understand how he just let this madman walk up on him and catch him off guard when he had the dude in his crosshairs. I can’t help but wonder about this so I can’t imagine how bad the guy himself feels for not shooting.
Firstly it would be hard to just kill someone without wanting to give them a chance or to de-escalate the situation. Shoot first then ask questions after isn’t the NZ culture. Massacres aren’t common in NZ and this happened in the 90’s rural NZ. People just weren’t nonchalant about homicide.
I mean, the video explains how. Anderson caught him off-guard by suddenly dropping to the ground as if he was surrendering, and then shooting while prone.
easy: Some people do not want to kill someone, even in extreme situations. It's a testament to the fact that he was a good person that he believed that the situation could be de-escalated. In a way that is commendable, too, even if it is inexplicable to those trigger happy individuals out there or those keyboard critics who boast about what *they* would have done better.
Well shoot him in the foot or leg, somewhere non life threatening. If his mum took away the gun once he finished cleaning it and hid it then this whole rampage would not have happened. I do blame her.
This comment comes from A) Eleven years working in a juvenile prison. B) A highly dysfunctional family. C) My own mental breakdown in my mid-50's. D) Realizing how many lies my Mom told. Very long story short...so many mentally ill people go off their drugs because they say it doesn't make them feel normal. This has been a complaint for decades. It's time for mental health professionals to take this complaint seriously.
My sister had 2 guys break into her house while she was home to rob her and when she pulled out her gun they ran, but since she didn't shoot, they came right back in. She stood there for a minute threatening to shoot before they realized she probably wouldn't, and ambushed her and took her gun before brutally attacking her. I still remember her sobbing saying she just couldn't pull the trigger bc she didn't want to kill anyone despite the danger she was in. I think this is a common thing for good people. It's easy to think that you'd do what needs to be done in that situation but I think that a lot of people hope and assume that just pointing the gun is enough to stop a threat, and then live with the guilt if it doesn't work that way. And honestly, before this I used to think that my sister would one day kill someone if she had to bc she's that type of person. It's sad that Rod lives with that guilt and blames himself bc a lot of people would do and have done the same in that position. Most people can't bring themselves to kill even in life threatening situations.
I know a guy with untreated paranoid schizophrenia/drug addict who lives with his mom at 33 and whenever he said some random insane statement his mom would just smile and ignore it. He strangled his mom to death in January. Don't ignore mental health crises especially of loved ones

My son has scizophrenia. Always refusing medication because "there's nothing wrong with me, I'm not crazy". 9 months ago he acknowledged his psychotic episodes and agreed to go to crisis center. Medication has made a miracle happen. I pray for everyone with this disease.

Too many suicides & school shootings have happened because kids & young adults got the parents weapon. My co worker’s son lost his girlfriend in a car accident & she knew how hard he had taken a former break up ,she took a week off to spend with him.Her husband a PI put all the fire arms in his locked safe in his home office & stayed home with the 21 year old only son the 2nd week ,when he went out for a gallon of milk his son broke the lock on his dads office door & opened the safe he knew the combo to & managed to take his own life sadly,before his dad got back from a 20 minute trip to the store. It could go like this guy ,with total hallucinations .This young man in the story should have been an inpatient until his medication was keeping his psychosis in check ,not just sent home with that diagnosis & some pills.

A friend of mine survived a home invasion in which his brother was killed. He also had the opportunity to dispatch the killer early on but froze up. He was so guilt ridden, he eventually ended up deleting himself in 2018 after a decade of guilt and severe depression. Tough spot. RIP Ricky

Treating mentally ill people by immediately removing them from society isn't exactly going to encourage mentally ill people to show their symptoms to others.
Iv met a terrifying amount of people who I truly believe have the lack of empathy and the capacity and sometimes even the opportunity to commit a mass shooting but we live in a society that doesn't detain people for being bat sht insane but instead only after a crime is committed.

"OK I was just joking and don't want to hurt anyone"
That's literally the only barrier separating you and insane people and that's if someone in their life cares enough to report it in the first place...
It’s hard for families to accept their children changing. Schizophrenia shows itself around early 20s.
It's hard to choose to enable your child or save the child's life and all others around the child....................
You cannot just have someone hospitalized because they “say” things or make threats. You have to request a 5150 and it may not get approved. Then if it is approved, it’s only a 72 hour hold. Then what? He’s also an adult. You cannot force an adult to be hospitalized simply because they have a diagnosis or lack there of. There’s literally nothing you can do until it’s too late. And hopefully it’s just some public nudity and obscenities and not the absolute worst case scenario.
I worked for Adult Protective Services and it's not easy to get people the care they need. Beds in state hospitals are limited. You can't force somebody to go to Community Care. Most of the time it's emergency room and then quickly released.
Here in Brazil, a schizophrenic guy was threatening to kill his mom with a knife so cops were in place. The guy got out the house and started to go in the direction of the cops waving the knife so the cop ordered him to stop 3 times then he shot the guy's foot. The crazy attacker stopped, sit down and started to scream in pain but he was alive. The cop basically saved his life that day.
Here in the US (depending on the cop) that guy would've most likely gotten a kill shot or multiple shots from the police. I'm glad the officers where you are dealt with that situation with a bit of empathy and understanding.

Stephen's overindulgent parents should have taken that damned shotgun away from him and then put him on medication before they brought him along on the trip.

I'm a Kiwi and unfortunately that's the state of our mental health services, too many tragedies have occurred while people wait to be treated.
Friend of mine in Wellington had to wait TWO YEARS for counseling and to even start the process of getting his ADHD addressed. In the meantime he lived in poverty without meds or continuous support from WINZ so his health deteriorated - he lost most of his teeth, got scary thin, lost thousands of dollars and developed a drug problem. We need better preventative care/intervention across the board :/
Going through survivor's guilt is horrible. You can't reason with it, you can't talk yourself out of it. You know the thoughts are ridiculous but you just can't stop them from happening. This is going to sound dramatic but I think I would rather parish than go through that again. I know I'm not alone.

I guess one.....like me...has never heard nearly one tenth of the stories you bring us. This is only one of the reasons I watch and listen to your channel. @@msr305his is not always true. Sometimes for people in those situations have a difficulty to even find appropriate help or be taken seriously.
These types of diagnoses generally (unless talking about growing out of certain mental/hormonal states from puberty) will always be be there. The mask of medicine is not always a strong barrier.
That’s not true. Almost everyone can be rehabilitated if we actually invested in our people.
as someone with schizophrenia the medication they have for it nowadays is genuinely mindblowing science. if you find the right one at the right dose and take it consistently, it can change your life. some meds come in shot form and you only have to get them once a month/every few months, which is great for folks prone to going off them. early intervention is key, but many people (both the schizophrenic person and those around them) do not take psychosis seriously until it’s too late.
when i was still living with my parents and had access to firearms, i went into an episode where my brain was telling me that i had to stand guard with a shotgun all night and not go to sleep or else everyone would die. to this day my family still treats it as a funny little story. i don’t talk to them much anymore lol
@@GeologicalNerdmedication is always going to be needed to treat schizophrenia. you can’t talk therapy your way out of your brain mis/over-firing serotonin signals. of course it’s never smart to only rely on medication but it’s the first line of defense for a reason
I dated someone in my early 20s who had this terrible disease. His parents did everything they could to keep him safe, but there is only so much you can do with an adult child. He was the most amazing boyfriend for a year, but then he stopped taking his medication and a different side emerged.
This is so tragic. If you've ever been around someone with this disease, you know just how much their mind tricks them. It's horrible. The real person would probably have never have done anything like this. But, the illness made him do something unthinkable. It is so horrible. All these people, and Steven's illness turning him into someone else.
I also understand why the parents didn't take the gun when they discovered it. A person with this illness often still resembles the person they knew. The person that would never harm. It is just so horrible what this illness does to the mind and sometimes to others.
However... I do not agree that he should ever be released from hospital. It is clear what his illness can do to him. He just cannot be in society.
I don't know if I have Schizophrenia or not. Nobody takes me seriously because I'm not saying that I think I'm Jesus, or that I can move clouds with my mind.

I worked in mental health for many years. I have so much sympathy for those who suffer from it, but at the same time, schizophrenia is can so often be unpredictable. One patient I'd dealt with for nearly a year, a young man with whom I felt we had a friendship, one day heard a voice that told him to attack me. He grabbed me and through me into a wall, breaking my knee...

I have never come across this case before but I won't forget it now. What an horrific tragedy.
As someone who has suffered from mental health issues for most of my life - albeit that they cause me to self-harm rather than harm others - I think there needs to be more education about mental issues and support for those people who are living with someone who is suffering. I think that most people's natural instinct is to believe that they can help the people they love regardless of their problems but mental health conditions can be unpredictable and irrational - that's the 'nature of the beast' - and sometimes no amount of love and support will change that. So, whilst I don't understand why that gun wasn't secured after Stephen was first found with it, I feel for his parents in other respects for trying to support him, even though that can sometimes do more harm that good.
As for Stephen himself, I feel terribly sad that he has this condition and feel that the jury was right to take this into account when reaching their verdict. However, nothing should take away from the other lives he destroyed and although I believe that he needs help not outright punishment, I think he requires constant close supervision having already had one lethal psychotic episode and if that means a loss of freedom, then so be it. No one, not even the best psychologist in the world, can predict or really understand what triggers people to do something like this, even if we can understand the basics of how paranoid schizophrenia affects the mind. That being the case, I don't think Stephen can never be considered 'cured' after such a severe and lethal breakdown.
He had plenty of help and support. I also have friends and family both with schizophrenia and none of them are dangerous. What is the difference between someone who harms themselves and someone who harms others? I believe that they just aren’t worth it. Lock them up and throw away the key.

He evidently was not taking his meds or the meds were not working for some time and as the mom of a schizophrenic him claiming they are coming to get him was the last sign among I'm sure previous clues of off his meds or a new med was not working him getting to that point it was only a matter of very near future thst something dangerous was ahead..immediate emergency help was desperately needed that moment. What a sad tragic story

My neighbor was a man in his 40s, nice at first. Then it was two years of terror as he kept accusing me of being a spy, putting cameras in his walls, telling the cops ghosts were laughing at him…he was evicted and kept sneaking back on property to break in and bang on my windows at 3am. Nobody took it seriously and cops always let him go or took too long. He’s now vagrant roaming the streets and I always feel scared not knowing if he has a mind or a soul left anymore. His last Facebook post after the fact was “I’m so sorry for everyone I hurt I don’t know what’s wrong with me please help”. My god.
poor fucking guy, it's heartbreaking that people can have serious mental collapses like that and no one in a position to do so will get them help. the system in so many countries absolutely fails its citizens with mental health services and it's how we end up with cases like this- no one takes it seriously enough to get them help.

The fact that his mothers response to being told he had just fucked two animals was what it was…it’s hard to have sympathy for the parents. That was her reaction to her son telling her he had sex with a fucking cat?!

I’m well aware that symptoms of schizophrenia allegedly don’t show up until someone is in their early 20s, but I have always wondered if that’s actually the case or if the families of people with schizophrenia are so ableist and in denial that they deliberately ignore signs their progeny is seriously mentally ill in their childhood. Especially a disorder like schizophrenia, that is likely the most debilitating and terrifying mental disorder one can have. It’s a “death sentence” in many ways to a parent that has hopes and dreams for their kid when they grow up. I believe many people think they can pray or love their child back to being “normal” again, that they will grow out of it and be able to live the life they envision for them. The reality is going without treatment and ignoring schizophrenia just makes it WORSE. It’s going to make that condition debilitating for their child because they’ve learned no tools besides hiding and masking it throughout their aging to adulthood. They learn how to pretend to appear fine, normal, etc. But they aren’t medicated, getting treatment with a professional, learning ways they can gain a measure of independence and live on their own in places that provide psychological care on the premises but are set up very much like apartment buildings, giving ppl a measure of privacy and freedom.
My great uncle had schizophrenia and looking through photographs of my grandmother’s family when he was a child….I can see that he was clearly “odd” already even as a kid. I think alot of children are misdiagnosed as having adhd or sometimes autism, but grow up and eventually get properly diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizo-spectrum disorders. Unfortunately when they go untreated, some people can develop violent tendencies. And of course, I believe they develop a certain degree of hostility and resentment for the world and their families for not getting them any real help. They oscillate between terror at their hallucinations and paranoid beliefs, and confusion during moments of clarity because they don’t understand what’s happening and why others don’t see/hear what they do. To them it’s all very real, and the world around them is basically persecuting them.
Part of me understands how shit not only our mental health care in this country is, but also how desperately lacking most of us are in basic knowledge about mental health disorders, and how to recognize them. But a lot of me holds anger towards the parents of people like this for failing to get them help. They raised him. They knew something was wrong long before he was actually diagnosed with schizophrenia. And once he DID get diagnosed, they still didn’t get him proper help. He was clearly unmedicated during this trip, but they still brought him along? Knowing he would be in unfamiliar surrounds and around a group of people he already wasn’t fond of. You can’t just rip someone with schizophrenia out of their daily routine and take them on a trip to a cabin and think that’s going to be fine. They need a routine, stability, they need to feel safe and comfortable around people they’re going to have to be around.
Too many parents care more about the idea of their child they want to project to the world than they do about the health and sanity of their actual child. Adult child or minor.

Don't forget this was in 1997, the general public was not really very aware of what paranoid schizophrenia was, unless you had someone you know who suffered with it. Even if the parents were aware that he was not taking his medication, being an adult they could not force him to take it, and unless he is sectioned by the police there is not much they could about it. My friends 40 year old son is also suffering from schizophrenia, and medicated, but he could easily overpower her if he so wished. There needs to be much more money invested in mental health world wide.

The mother survived from what I can find online. She should have been sent to prison for the rest of her life. She knew her son was mentally unstable and didn’t make sure the weapon was secured. Steven didn’t really understand what he was doing (I’m NOT excusing him, just stating reality), but she definitely knew he was dangerous.
It was the son who killed everyone. Not her. She made a mistake but her son is the problem. I have no sympathy for people like that. I don’t care about their “mental health”… if they refuse to take medication they shouldn’t be allowed to live outside of high security mental facilities.

When you have a child with schizophrenia and you love him as you love all of your children but he or she becomes unstable and suddenly starts not making sense, it is shocking but parents aren’t normally afraid of our children. @@ElaAusDemTal I wouldn't. Most people wouldn't. Apparently this behavior wasn't new to them, or he was doing such weird shit at home that this wasn't unusual. They should have gotten him help WAY before this happened. My only point is that they had no way of knowing that this particular weekend was going to be the one where he clicked. Personally, as soon as I saw him cleaning a gun, I would have taken it from him or had my husband do it, or when he came out and said what he did about the cat and dog, I would have excused myself, my husband, and my son and left immediately with apologies all the way around. They still didn't have any way of knowing that was going to be the day. And one of the neighbors mentioned that gunshots were not unusual to hear in that area and nobody else was concerned enough to make sure the gun was taken either. So blame them for not getting him the appropriate help, just not this particular incident.
His disease is an extremely unpredictable one and you can't always tell when someone is going to flip their script.

I worked as a counselor in a day program with severely mentally ill people for seven years. They were not monsters, but very sick, and symptoms caused agony. The delusions and hallucinations experienced seem real, because their brain misfires providing them skewed messages. We need to do a better job of educating loved ones and the public, and keep weapons away from those who have a great risk of harming themselves or others.

You are correct, there have been studies that show that brain structure changes as Schizophrenia advances. For all we know this guy didn't see the people that he was unaliving as people but demons or some other severe hallucinations. I can't imagine living with a disease that causes the brain to constantly betray reality. A friend of mine from high-school got Schizophrenia in his twenties. He changed from a gentle lucid human to a person with severe psychosis and hallucinations he saw demons and dragons everywhere. Fortunately he got the treatment that he needed before something like this in the video happened, however he did attack a couple people (one being his mother) which landed him in a psychiatric facility where he was officially diagnosed and put on appropriate meds.

I hate cases like this because while maintaining your mental health is your own personal responsibility it sucks to have something out of your control rule your life and cause irreparable harm to those you loved.

Maintaining one’s mental health is possible when you have disorders that don’t cause psychosis. I have OCD and am fine living alone. But I also don’t experience severe hallucinations or paranoid thoughts as part of my disorder. People that have severe Bipolar I, schizophrenia, schizotypal disorder, schizoaffective disorder often CANNOT manage their illness alone. They are often unable to understand just how bad their disorder is. Unless someone was diagnosed early and provided with proper support from family to learn how to regulate medication, psychiatric visits, etc., they often do not have the tools necessary to do so. They never learned how, basically. It’s fucked up, because those are the people who often get abandoned by friends and family as they age and their symptoms get worse. Then they get stuck in a loop of homelessness, in and out of psychosis, and often frequent contact with law enforcement/arrests.
Tbh we can’t expect people suffering with that level of illness to take care of themselves and just ignore it, it’s our job as human beings to fix the mental health crisis and that involves community support.

I'm glad that I read your, much better informed comment, before I did. Whilst I 100% agree that these sorts of cases are extremely tragic for the victims, the idea that mentally ill people, who are in a state of psychosis, have any clue as to how to be "responsible" for their hallucinations is, at best, naive. I have been in relationships and known people with severe bipolar disorder and I find the frustration and "responsibility", lies with those around the sick individual, be it doctors, family, friends etc, to accept that the person needs help way before it gets to the point of full on paranoid psychosis. I had no help at all with my partner and it never went this far but it certainly didn't help that no one took his declining mental health seriously and expected him to "snap out of it"
@@nixpuk75yes, I agree. I think humanity as a whole is still pretty clueless/ill - equipped when it comes to severe mental illness, and mental illness in general. It's a difficult one, cos at the end of the day, this man murdered several people and traumatised the others to the point of it affecting their daily lives, and some justice should still be done, and in my opinion I think he was given a very lenient sentence. Especially that he's now out and free to live his life, and the fact that he tried to get away with deceiving/lying by omission to get his tutoring job doesn't sit well with me. I think he should've gotten life in that forensic hospital, because surely this could happen again easily, if the monitoring of him eases up and he decides to go off his meds, the risk is surely quite high? I don't know. Its just unfair that he gets to live life as a free man, even though he took that away from countless people affected by his actions. I just hope the close monitoring of him continues, and that he is able to be rehabilitated, sees the error of his ways and the importance of his medication and monitoring!

My children’s pediatrician told a young man’s mother for YEARS to get him help but she ignored him. One day the young man about 26 yr old drove his mom’s car and burst into the doctors office and stabbed our beloved pediatrician. The young man took off in the car and the footage of the chase was actually shown on the news and the police were able to do stop sticks and stop and apprehended him. Our pediatrician He survived but came inches away from death. I saw him at a community event because I know his daughter and her kids go to my son’s school and he’s ok but hasn’t fully recovered mentally. He is a good man, who has done so much for this community by going out to a very poor and mostly black farming community and doing free or reduced fee work for this community. I am afraid he will suffer mentally from this forever. All because mom didn’t want to face the boy now a man’s schizophrenia. The young man is institutionalized and I don’t think there are any way he will ever get out.
Unbelievabe that this guy can walk free.

My daughter's father was schizophrenic and it claimed his life, as it does most people who suffer with it. Its no joke, and some people don't choose to be monsters. So much love to all of those familie, and even this monster.
And they're medication/treatment resistant more than any other MI so it's hard to treat.

I am absolutely not blaming the good guy with a gun for not shooting but man he could have stopped this guy by immediately putting a bullet in him. Firstly it would be hard to just kill someone without wanting to give them a chance or to de-escalate the situation. Shoot first then ask questions after isn’t the NZ culture. Massacres aren’t common in NZ and this happened in the 90’s rural NZ. People just weren’t nonchalant about homicide.

easy: Some people do not want to kill someone, even in extreme situations. It's a testament to the fact that he was a good person that he believed that the situation could be de-escalated. In a way that is commendable, too, even if it is inexplicable to those trigger happy individuals out there or those keyboard critics who boast about what *they* would have done better.
Well shoot him in the foot or leg, somewhere non life threatening. If his mum took away the gun once he finished cleaning it and hid it then this whole rampage would not have happened. I do blame her.
This comment comes from A) Eleven years working in a juvenile prison. B) A highly dysfunctional family. C) My own mental breakdown in my mid-50's. D) Realizing how many lies my Mom told.
Very long story short...so many mentally ill people go off their drugs because they say it doesn't make them feel normal. This has been a complaint for decades. It's time for mental health professionals to take this complaint seriously.
My sister had 2 guys break into her house while she was home to rob her and when she pulled out her gun they ran, but since she didn't shoot, they came right back in. She stood there for a minute threatening to shoot before they realized she probably wouldn't, and ambushed her and took her gun before brutally attacking her. I still remember her sobbing saying she just couldn't pull the trigger bc she didn't want to kill anyone despite the danger she was in. I think this is a common thing for good people. It's easy to think that you'd do what needs to be done in that situation but I think that a lot of people hope and assume that just pointing the gun is enough to stop a threat, and then live with the guilt if it doesn't work that way. And honestly, before this I used to think that my sister would one day kill someone if she had to bc she's that type of person. It's sad that Rod lives with that guilt and blames himself bc a lot of people would do and have done the same in that position. Most people can't bring themselves to kill even in life threatening situations.
