Ricky Kasso started worshiping Satan as a means of shocking the world and it worked. The community recognized that he was a violent and unstable young man. They learned the hard way just how dangerous he was when he carried out an unspeakable crime in the name of the devil.

Wow- the mention of "Purple Micro-dots" took me back to one very strange night in 1981. I was a junior in high school, & my best friend & I took some with these much older guys we knew. We couldn't understand what the big deal was... we didn't feel any different. Until about an hour & a half later, when I was driving us home. Holy Hell... it got SO foggy out, & the night sky had a pink/purple haze to it (Jimi Hendrix knew what he was talking about, lol). It was a very strange night after that. I mentioned the weird fog & sky color to my step-brother the next day, & he looked at me like I had 3 heads & told me that the sky had been very clear that night. Then he asked what I'd been smoking. I wasn't lying when I replied "Nothing but Marlboros".😂😂😂
The night sky is so beautiful on dot. Like you could reach up and touch it.
I was in HS in '81 as well, and remember those times well. While on blotter, I saw a fish "fly" out of the water, smack my friend on the side of the face (he was in knee-deep water), and wiggle away, back into the water. It was nuts! Ah, the good 'ol days...😂

Your writing is getting so good! So much in the story reminds me of the street-punk scene in OC California in the last 80s and 90s. Squats, gratuitous drug use, “enchanted woods” spot, abandoned houses and the massive parties with bands, and that one guy who always takes it to an uncomfortable extreme. Also, there’s always a guy named doughnut and one named ghost, every town. I’ll count myself lucky the worst I experienced was the rotten cow head in the pit.

Thank you! It's fascinating how certain elements of different scenes can resonate across time and space. The street-punk scene you describe in OC California certainly seems like it had its share of unique characters and experiences, both memorable and perhaps a bit wild. It's those shared memories and characters that often define a scene. And encountering a rotten cow head in the pit sounds like quite the memorable experience!

Yep, accurate GenX description 💯 My Grandma used to call me a latchkey kid... (But it was due to my mom always avoiding her (mother.in.law) calls, so Grandma just assumed I was home alone 😂
Side Note: That ended once I asked my mom what a latchkey kid was. She asked where I heard it and I told her grandma called me that. She didn't avoid the calls anymore if I was home because I always answered.

I grew up very close to where this took place. I’m 11 years younger than Ricky though in the early 1990’s when I was 12-14 the lore of this story was still very much alive. I used to run away from home a lot a t the time and sleep in a nature preserve which was like around the corner from my house. One day I met a group of “metalheads” who were also just goofing off in the woods. I was a 14 year old girl, but started dating one of these guys who was 19. Some of the other guys in this group were a bit older still and they knew Ricky. One guy in particular would brag about setting mice and hamsters on fire because he thought it was funny.
I also have to say Ricky kicking his dad’s car because he wanted money for a bagel is the most Long Island thing I’ve ever heard.
There was a nightclub not too far from the area in an isolated factory that used to produce bags of ice (actual frozen water). My friend and I would lie to our parents and take a train to the club. There were people there who knew Ricky too.
Taking a hit from the bong when you say “satin” will put me to bed early tonight 😂

This brought back a lot of memories when I ventured down a dark path in the early 1970s with my rock band, and friends. We did a lot of crazy things but never even thought of murder. I survived and went straight. The others went to jail and otherwise had hard lives. They are all dead now.

The dad reminds me so much of my mother though not for sports but for grades. My mother would beat the brakes off of me in front of people. She had no care about that, but it was also the 1980s. She would humiliate me in public and very similar ways, but instead of becoming the thing that she said I was, I have built my life into something so much better because I refused to be what she told me I was; a mistake that should’ve never been born and that I ruined everything.
I’m so grateful for your channel because it highlights a lot of other people turn into monsters have similar type of childhood to me but I never turned into a monster. Just CPTSD and anxiety 😐

Extremely well done!!! I had just gotten out of high-school when this hit the news. All of my friends were into heavy metal including myself but we all took the whole satanic part of it with tongue firmly in cheek. Sure we all wore leather and metal band concert shirts and continued to attend those concerts for most of our lives but the music was our outlet and it never went passed moshing. This was the most comprehensive telling of this story I've ever heard and I've heard this story so many times that I almost didn't watch your video of it. It never fails to astonish me when I hear stories like this that villainize poor, young, misguided & unloved young people who fall off the deep end and are lost forever (quite literally). Doesn't it make you wonder how differently things could've turned out had our young, wayward Ricky & his drug compadres been given just a little love & support?? But I guess you can't expect much from an asshat father who makes his wife - who is in active LABOR - wait until the damn GAME ON TV was finished before carrying her to the hospital. What a selfish prick. 🙄
And the thing about the legal loophole concerning that park was a joke. If the two cities truly cared about cleaning up crime & drug use, they would have come together far sooner to work out a compromise so that the area was constantly patrolled by active-duty police officers who had the power to arrest & book them.
These poor kids were failed left & right & back again. I simply cannot fathom knowing your child was sleeping in the woods in the rain on a moldering old couch & knowing he had PNEUMONIA, yet doing absolutely NOTHING to help him?? How could you even do that???! He must have been so alone, so lost & so dejected; no wonder he sought solace in all the wrong places.
I suppose that is why gangs hold such appeal for ignored, unwanted children - a 'bad family' is better than no family, after all ...right?? (Umm ...NO.). But when the need to belong - and ESCAPE (as in, thru drugs) - becomes stronger than the need for food & shelter, all bets are off.
As always, this episode was well-researched & presented. My one (and only) complaint is that part where he called Satan a "Fairy Tale". My friend, but this despicable entity is alive & well and relishing how all of the poor young, misguided, unloved & lost young people (exactly like poor Ricky) are falling into his traps so easily. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, of course, but I urge folks to never EVER underestimate this Evil 'Fairy Tale'....if given the chance, he will swallow you whole.
My heart genuinely breaks for all such youths who feel so forgotten, unloved & cast aside - the devil will chew them up & spit them out, leaving only an empty husk of the person (and potential) they used to be.

Wow! Jiles! This is the most relevant story I've heard you tell. Hits home. I was in a similar situation minus satan and the violence. Entheogens aren't for everyone and no one should use them carelessly or capriciously. No one should "play" with satan or demonic forces. The combination of psychedelics and demonic worship are beyond explosive...ATOMIC!

“18 and Life” is a song by Skid Row about a young man named Ricky who accidentally kills a friend with his gun, earning him a life sentence, and the consequences of his youth. The song was written by Rachel Bolan, the band's bassist, and guitarist Dave Sabo says the original inspiration was his brother Rick's life after returning from Vietnam. However, some previously believed that Sabo got the idea from a newspaper article about an 18-year-old named Ricky who was sentenced to life in prison for the same crime.

Omg, i first read about this guy in i think 2006 or something. On a Site called The Wacky World of Murder. (mocking the insane since 1996) i dont know who did the site but i went to look for it a few months ago and couldnt find it. It was great. Ricky was on there along with a ton of other cases that were just incredibly bad. Like Dale Nelson. The Dale Nelson Case is probably the worst ive ever heard of. Anyway yeah, i never forgot Ricky Kasso. The guy was totally wacked
I have another book on this case by David St Clair called, 'Say You Love Satan'. Its pretty good. There was a movie made based on this book and 'The Acid King'. Its a truly tragic story.

I remember reading about this crime around 35 years ago when I was still fairly young. I’m 65 now and of all of the many, many true crime stories I’ve read, watched, and listened to over the years, this still remains one of the saddest, most horrifying ones of all. It’s just completely haunting. Ricky and the other boys would be in their late 50s now. I did watch an interview with Jimmy Troiano online when he was older that was interesting. It’s called “Satan in the Suburbs - Interview with Jimmy Troiano.” It’s still available.
