I’ve become addicted to your videos! The best motor yacht channel out there. Plenty of sailing channels out there but sailing has never done it for me. I like horsepower too much!

interesting video, and glad to hear that the diver was able to get you sorted a little, I'm sure that someone has likely mentioned this already, but the zinc is for corrosion protection and the bearing/bushing is held into the strut by set screws, from what the diver said, your original bushing had moved forward and his comments about knocking it back in and putting pins in it to help secure it follow with that. Glad you got it fixed and looking forward to seeing some more of your videos. (yes, I subscribed)

    • @tryingnottosink9107
      @tryingnottosink9107  5 лет назад +1

Yes, the pins failed and bearing slipped back towards the engine. He pushed it back in and we put a zinc on the shaft to keep it trapped in place until we had it repaired. We ended up replacing all the bearings on both shafts, just to be safe.

Well, that's not good but it could be much worse. Very few people have traversed the ICW and not run aground. It happens. Thanks for posting the video. Looking forward to the repair. GOD bless. JC

I would like to ask a serious question (I am not trying to be mean... don't read it like that): You ran aground (or hit some underwater thingy) in The Alligator-Pungo Canal. The collision was serious enough to have you need to throttle back and you were taking on water thru your shaft seal. Why then, did you completely pass by soooo many excellent boating towns where you could have had the problem diagnosed or fixed correctly? Instead, you motored for well over 100 miles with an unknown amount of damage and stop in one of the most remote towns on the NC ICW to call for a diver. Who, as you noted, was more than an hour away. You passed Oriental (Deaton, Sailcraft), Beaufort (Jarret Bay, Bock Marine, Town Creek), even Morehead City where you actually stopped would have proved a better (and possibly less expensive) place to have your boat serviced. We are genuinely curious what your thought process was and why you would sail past some amazing yards to finally stop in the middle of nowhere to get a possibly very serious problem looted at?

Adventures Of Skinny Dippin’....Having just started watching his series of very informative motor boating - I wondered the same thing looking at his map of leaving dismal canal. NC is rich with quality marinas along the ICW.

Hi guys first time sending a message. So I found your channel and have binge watched them all! I am local to you guys, and would love to meet up with you sometime. Anyway, I am absolutely impressed with the diver for getting that cutlass bearing back in. In the process of redoing all my running gear as we speak. Look forward to upcoming videos. I too subscribe to many channels, with most being sailing ones, but as a power boater, I enjoy your channel immensely. Love the docking videos and also the day to day maintenance/repairs/upgrade ones as well. I will reach out to you guys on FB when your back in the area, would love to stop by and visit, and bring along a few cold ones and shoot the breeze. Fair seas!

Thanks for sharing I had to have a cutlass bearing replaced before so I am familiar with what he was talking about did the diver think it happened when you ran a ground? I was trying to listen to the conversation but didn't hear all of it at least the shaft and prop seem to be ok. Looking forward to the next video. Have a great day. God Bless!!!

The strut has set screws on the sides that are supposed to allow access to dimple the cutlas bearing when its installed so set screws" with lock tite" prevent this from happening. If it was not done correctly or the set screws came out then it can slip out of place. Then there is the cutlass bearings you want to come out that don't budge even with a 20 LB sledge driving them. For anyone else who deals with this sort of issue. Soon as anything is not right/ normal shut it down and save your self any damage on the running gear. I suggest haul out and get a experience guy to deal with cutlass begins n shaft issues. They need done right and by an experienced guy with the correct tools. Pipes n hammers n saw blades do more damage than good if your not sure what your doing and familiar with the methods to work on these things.

Just out of curiosity how is the glued transducer working? We have a raymarine unit that came with the same style transducer and it would be awesome to mount it inside the boat.

It works well. It does lose signal when under high turbulence and sometimes in really deep water, but for our purpose it is perfect. It is great for intracoastal and near coastal. I like that it shows up as a small box on my tablets when using navionics. I expect deep sea fishermen will find it lacking.

  • @skunkjobb

The original term is actually cutless, a name sugesting that it "cuts" less on the shaft than older types of bearings. Then someone thought cutlass like the sword would be a fitting brand name but it's really only one brand of cutless bearings that is named Cutlass.

It typically runs $100-300, depending on what they do. We just paid $100 to have zincs put on. A few weeks ago we paid $250 for a bottom cleaning in the Bahamas.

Cutlass bearing walks out of the shaft support, no set screws holding it in, is my guess. Wow, when it was last changed, it was not properly secured. If the support is thick enough use two sets crews one behind the other to lock the bearing in place.
    Best wishes

If the photograph that is shown at 09:07 is the installation that was in that boat, then the person who put that cutlass bearing in should be shot or jailed, as the length of a cutlass bearing was too short and it should have been the same length as the length of the central hub in the A or the P bracket holding the shaft. If, as the diver stated at 04:36 that the cutlass bearing was fully out withdrawn of its place such that the weight of the shaft and propeller were bending the shaft down, then that was the reason for the noise they heard as the shaft was not centrally supported in the hub of the A bracket. I do not think that it was a BROKEN cutlass bearing as if the cutlass bearing was of the right length and it broke, that part that slipped out would become part of the shaft while the other part that remains in the A bracket would have kept the shaft in its central position. It is certain that the original cutlass bearing installed was not of the correct length as needed in that installation.
What I am curious about and finding it intriguing is what the diver said at 04:37 he said, " The cutlass bearing is completely out of the rudder ( RUDDER!!!!) then when she asks what is a cutlass bearing he proceed to say at 04:42," It is where your strut comes down to the rrrrudder rr rudder where your strut.......... fubled words" .......it is completely out of its place....." THAT CUTLASS BEARING HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE RUDDER!!!!!!!!!!!!
At 06:05 the diver said that the cutlass bearing mushroomed out and it would be difficult to place it back to hold it in place with pins!"
Again looking at the photograph which is shown at 09:06 so if the cutlass bearing was completely out and it mushroomed out against the hub of the A bracket, then it is definite that that cutlass bearing did not break, but it was TOO SHORT AND WAS NOT caught by the side screws from the hub of the A bracket. If the cutlass bearing Mushroomed on its front end then the coupling to the engine is a flexible coupling with some back and forth resilience due to the rubber coupling. I would not be surprised that the short cutlass bearing was not caught well by the side screws and the forward and reverse slight motion of the shaft loosened it, which resulted in the EXTRA SHORT cutlass bearing completely moving out of its place.
I am an old man who comes from a boatbuilding family and I can say that even at my old age, I could replace that cutlass bearing underwater, with basic tools in less than one hour. The fact that it is already withdrawn out of the A bracket, the work only involves taking the propeller off and that is the easiest job on earth, or should I say underwater.
I feel that the owners of that boat have been ripped off! That is modern life!!! Again I am still smiling at the fact that the diver said, at 04:37," The cutlass bearing is completely out of the rudder! "
My compliments to the very educated lady who spoke at 04:29 and was concerned about the diver when, after mentioning the lobster with her sense of humor, she said to the diver in an anxious and uneasy and a concerned voice saying, ' Be careful".
Not many ladies like that around these days.

Brass tube with a rubber bearing inside it, to support the shaft, with cuts in it to allow water to flow through and lubricate the shaft (unless it's hard up against a prop!). Held from sliding out by grub screws (unless they've corroded and failed, or the bearing wasn't dimpled to allow the grub screws to grip!)

Probably because he was in about 4.5' of water and was just standing on the bottom :) (we have stayed in that marina once before) TBH, that Hatt probably drafts just about the amount of water it was sitting in and he was crawling thru the mud to get to the bottom anyway.

@@tryingnottosink9107 "BCD," buoyancy Compensation Devise. It's an inflatable vest diver's were to control depth while diving. Also use for emergency accent if necessary. I believe this diver isn't using one because the wet suit works as a BCD. when working in less then 10 feet of water. The wet suit compresses as it goes deeper and isn't as buoyant.
