I ab-so-lute-ly love how Alex doesn't really use fillers while talking....just listen to other journalist they all continuously be like :"uhh,umm,theuh,anduhh"...etc.
Yup. Fillers like umm or uh are used when verbal skills are too slow and the mind needs that half beat to catch up. It includes pet phrases people insert in their speech like “you know”. Even that weird up-lilt that women use that sounds like they’re asking a question. Its a time delay. Its fine when you’re young, but when you’re a professional, you lose credibility and it sounds annoying.
I wanted the 124 the moment it was announced they were going to actually make it... Test drove one last week, Fell In LOVE.... Just special ordered a Lusso, with Every Factory Option with a 6 speed stick.. Grigio Moda Meteor Gray / Black Nero Interior... LOVE that it's built in Japan, with MX5 reliability.. Arrives in 4 weeks... CAN NOT WAIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the fourth review of the Spider I've seen and the best by far. You seem to be working from a well-written script, loaded with useful information, and not just talking off the top of your head. Well done and much appreciated.
I'm very happy to report, as a 2017 Fiat 124 Spider Classica owner, that I LOVE this car as much as the 1st day I drove it home in the rain from Ft. Pierce, Fl. I had a Miata several years ago and drove one of the new ones first. I took a test drive in a Spider a couple days later. It was an easy choice for me and I'm very happy after 20,000 miles. My main advice is GET THE 6 SPEED MANUAL !
Currently have a 1977 Fiat 124 Spider and I can't wait until I can get my hands on a manual transmission 2017 Fiat 124 Abarth! I put my deposit down... Now I just have to convince my fiance to let me keep both in the garage!! Great review! Thanks!
Some thoughts after a few months ownership with 124 Abarth. When cold, it idles like a lawn mower with two engines. Lacks 'grunt' at low RPM, don't even think of lugging the thing. Turbo lag is alive and well. All that being said, this thing makes me smile every time we drive in it! Get the manual and enjoy being back to basics.
Thanks for the in depth review. It solidifies my decision. I was considering a Miata but had the opportunity to test drive the Spider today and you're absolutely right, it is a blast to drive.
Great review. I absolutely agree. The torquey engine makes the 124 Spider so fun to drive. Great handling. I went for a test drive and fell in love. Brought mine home the same day.
Alex (and the team that helps, if there is one?): your production values has continually increased. It is really, really professional, informative, and considerate. Thank you for all you do! Also, to note, your quad split screen during the driving review was a stand-out to me. Well done! I'm near the last person on Earth that would consider purchasing a convertible, but this 124 has some amazing attributes. Japanese engineering wrapped around Italian design... can you ask for more? What a wonderful vehicle!
wanted to point out that THE FIAT ENGINE IS RELIABLE Ask any 500 abarth owner (the engine is basically the same unit) if they've had any engine troubles and they'll tell you no, or very little, usually just spark plugs needing gapping sometimes for smooth idle. not to mention it can be tuned reliably too. There's a tune for the 500 abarth that puts it up to 230 WHEEL horsepower, which considering the weight of the car is staggeringly good power to weight ratio, actually comparable to a new mustang GT
Owner of 2018 124 Lusso.........had 3 Fiat 2000's in the 80's...........you can have my new one when you pry it from my cold dead fingers........Great Reincarnation.....
Alex, those are the most fascinating head lights in the auto industry! I absolutely love them! They are so unique, so.. alive! I wish Fiat would adopt those on other models too.
Great Review, I've never been a huge MX-5 fans because of the look but the 124 Abarth has me excited. I love my 500Abarth and this one seems to take that car to another level.
Always Loved the 124... roommate years ago had one with no problems.. others not so lucky..... NOW.. Sexy Italian styling, with Japanese dependability, What's NOT to Love !!!!I'd get the new 124 over the Miata in a heartbeat.... Planning for one in my future !!!!
I would buy the Miata because I'm a fanboy, but having Mazda design and build under the 124 Spyder makes me consider a used 124 and makes me feel confident about its reliability.
Another fantastic review Alex. Really like this unique combination of FIAT and Mazda. Having owned both these brands, would love to own their love child!
Alex, another outstanding job, on an exciting new car. You mentioned the longer front end, which I usually find a more fun sensation in the turns. I like the fact that you seem to be able to view the longer hood out in front of you. It gives you the feel of better, more responsive steering and quicker input and movement.
I owned two Fiat 124 Spiders in the 1970's and still love that look. Fiat was terrible at many things but their engines were pretty good. I've also owned two MX-5's. I lean toward the 124 Spider but I'm not sure how many Fiat dealers are around. I also like the feel of my third generation MX-5 better than the new one. I really wish Mazda would put more emphasis on power and torque.
I really like the 124! I would definitely go with it over the MX-5. Especially considering the torque lower in the power band. I also think it's more attractive than the Mazda. There's the fear of reliability with Fiat, but having the same platform as the MX-5, it seems like less of a worry. Lastly, this review gave us an emotional response that we rarely get to see. If a car can make Alex smile during a review, it's got to be good.
Alex: What camera is that? The HD is outrageous! If this is the camera I'm thinking it is, I"m buying one as soon as you confirm. Thanks for your amazing work! I'm stunned.
All about this FIAT. Plan to daily one in about a year. Bare bone base manual Classica in black will be my choice I think. Will need to add the silver framing around the windshield and get matching silver exhaust tips. Also I feel a sort of matching silver wire mesh grill insert could look really great. I hope front license plate law changes in Iowa because this will be a beautiful face.
Lovely car, nice nod to the past. I wonder how much more power is left to tap from that 1.4 engine and if there is, will it make it the tuner's favorite.
God that 124 has to be one of the sexiest cars available right now. Would totally buy one if I had the money to blow. Also, anyone who buys that in an automatic transmission is a fool. I would never be caught dead in this car without the manual, the driving experience would be diminished drastically without it.
Fool, why? Is not your money, people's can buy whatever the fuck they want, that's why you have the automatic option, the car is still fun, that's a preference, I'm tired of stick shift, me and my father drove a lot of these cars with manual transmission in my country, that's why I want one with the automatic transmission, like I said it all comes to your preference!
I_noSc0pedJFK True people can buy whatever they wish to, that I have no problem with. I just feel like if you're buying a car like this, something that is inherently impractical and only bought for the fun factor, why wouldn't you buy it in a manual? A manual transmission connects you to the car and really enriches the experience of driving, if you're going to spend a significant amount of money on what is essentially a toy (and I say that in the most well meaning way) why would you rob yourself of a better experience? This isn't going to be a daily driver for the vast majority of people because for the vast majority it can't be. If it was your daily driver I could understand wanting it to be an auto for just the convenience. But for most people, you drive this car to have fun, and have a fun experience, buying this in an automatic just robs you of the extra fun factor.
+Angus O'Leary I want this car to be my primary vehicle, also here in Miami the traffic is horrible and people are duchebags when it comes to driving lol, also I really like this car because I can open the soft op and enjoy the sun of Florida, this car in automatic transmission is enough for me and will suit my needs, I liked reading your opinion, have a good day sir!
Fantastic job Alex! Well researched and full of factual information, even some Fiat 124 Spider history. You nailed it on the torque increase and what it means to real world drivability. This is very useable to anyone comparing the Mazda! This review is so much better than the low content "I'm just wingin' it & calling it the Fiata" review from Roman at FLC. You rock Alex!!
I'd definitely take the 124. In fact I really want one! It looks better, like you said, Italian Style with Japanese Engineering! It is a match made in heaven, the fact that chassis, electrical components, mechanicals are basically an MX-5 is something that very heavily sways me, because you get the best of both worlds! Although it's got Fiats own engine, I don't think that would hinder reliability, Fiat engines tend to be pretty good these days!
A big difference between the normal 124 and the Abarth version is the sport mode. It is the only way to disable the stability system. If you want to go sideways with this car, you need the Abarth.
Love the blue model, but would not pay $35K for it. Also love the suspension enhancements of the Abarth version, but absolutely hate its two-tone exterior. I wouldn't worry about the reliability of the car's Mazda components, but will wait and see how its Fiat components hold up. By then, maybe I'll be able to buy a blue, single-colored Abarth without the excessive introductory markup. Great comparison review. Thanks.
There is no comparison, the Fiat is SO much better looking all the way around, front, rear and profile. With a more usable torque at much lower rev's, it's a no-brainer. It looks sexy and European. It also looks more expensive, even though it really isn't. I have owned two Miatas, a 1999 second generation, and a rare 2005 MX-5 Mazdaspeed. My next roadster will be the Fiat Spider 124. Only question is whether to get the sexy Lusso model, or the sporty Abarth... I may be getting a bit old for the Boy-racer look.
Might be a no-brainer for you. For me it is probably the Mazda with the 2.0l engine and the Bilstein supspension. It is not a no-brainer, because the 124 Lusso is also pretty nice, but I do not want a comfortable cruiser with an automatic, I want a roadster. I want a manual transmission and I want to keep the engine above 4000RPM on a nice, curvy backroad. That is the real fun in such a car. And the fact that the Fiat is more practical and might be a better daily driver is not an issue for me, because I would buy neither car as a daily driver. I have a 20 year old BMW 728i for that.
Alex, great review as usual but I am just not into the FIAT styling. For some reasons, I actually prefer the Mazda's design, especially rear. Anyway, I would be very happy with either one as long as it is manual :)
Being of English style and heritage, I've always fancied a true British roadster. With an MGB (1970 in 1987) as my first vehicle, I loved the legacy and looks of my roadster. I did not, however, enjoy its unreliability. Lucas, Prince of Darkness, my father would say, when the electrical system went weird on me. Blowing the clutch and needing to remove the engine and trans to replace it, just seemed wrong... Well eventually, I'd go Japanese, like my motorcycle and Mazda would be my brand of choice. On my 4th Mazda in 14 years ('02 Protege 5, '09 6 and still driving a '12 5), I picked up a gently used 2007 MX-5. I love it and have been considering the Gen 4, after I hand the keys of my Gen 3 to my daughter, but after seeing Fiats redo of the Gen 4, I'm tempted. Like a Primitivo or Zinfandel, its bold and unique, compared to the MX-5. It appears more "crafted", rather than "produced". With more style points and visual appeal, verses the robot from an anime movie looks of the Gen 4, Fiat just might get my money in a year or 2.
Fiat 124 just looks better, more refined. Dare I say a little more masculine. My only worry would be with the reliability of the Fiat engine. Love your reviews, keep up the good work.
Love the looks of the 124. But i have to agree with BfSkinnerpunk. My hangup would be that 1.4 Turbo. More fun to drive than the 2.0 yes. But is it a a Mazda designed engine? I was under the impression it was an Fiat engine. A mazda naturally aspirated engine you could put 200k miles on easy. The turbo Fiat motor that is shared with the 500 Abarth? i have serious doubts. Check consumer reports and they will agree. FCA does not have the reputation that Mazda does for longevity. Overall i love the review and agree with Alex that the rest of the 124 is probably bulletproof reliability-wise due to the amount of DNA shared with the miata. Alex, keep up the good work. You are extremely good at what you do and i find your auto reviews second to none.
The 1.4L Multiair engine got International Engine of the Year in 2010. Same motor as Alfa Mito, Alfa Giulietta, Fiat 500 Abarth, Dodge Dart, Jeep Renegade and 500X base models. Consumer Reports is much better judge of toaster ovens and vacuum cleaners.
if your argument is that the 1.4 turbo is more fun, the reviews seem to agree with that. I have not driven the car. Does the engine have better output? Yes. yes it does. the 124 even sounds way better. I simply said i had concerns about the motor long term. Is it a good engine? probably. is it 200k good? I dont know. the design has only been around for 5 years or so. If you are arguing that the motor is going to have the longevity of a naturally aspirated inline four from mazda, i will take that bet, all day. Most people would. Consumer reports aside, FCA doesnt have the reputation of being a beacon of reliability. But i give them credit, if the reviews are accurate they kinda out miata'd the miata. Also they are the only auto manufacturer that has the balls to make something as cool as the Hellcat.
the more i think about it it makes me sound like im arguing for the "practical" choice in engines when in reality, a 2 seater sports car isn't really a practical car to begin with right? Its a whimsical fun car. So if people want something fun they should do it all the way. get the fun engine. who gives a shit what happens in 10 years. the people who buy these cars aren't generally worried about whats going to happen when the odometer hits 200k.
The Mazda SkyActiv 2.0 is actually (very slightly) newer engine than the 1.4 MultiAir from Fiat. The 1.4 MultiAir debuted in 2009 while the SkyActiv 2.0 made its debut in 2012. The MultiAir is also used in far more vehicles, so there's a lot more data supporting the mid-term reliability of the platform. It's also interesting that Fiat chose the manual transmission from the NC MX-5 rather than the new SkyActiv manual from the ND. I won't argue with you on the brand perception of Mazda vs. Fiat as I certainly had some of the same thoughts, but the FCA of today isn't the Fiat car company that left the US market so many years ago.
Familiar with doesn't mean uncomfortable with the others....! Your younger Canadian viewers, your engineering colleagues and almost all immigrants to the US, will appreciate the addition of SI units wherever possible. :)
Back in 2008 I was looking at a sports car to purchase. Looked at and drove both the 2008 Mazda Miata Mx5 and the 2008 Corvette (always wanted a new Corvette but could not afford one until that time). Yes, entirely different cars and performance, I know. But I could not help but love the power of the Corvette's American V8. So yes, I went and bought the Corvette with a 6 speed manual transmission and have not been sorry about my choice. My Corvette now has around 17,000 miles on it and I most likely will never sell it barring unforeseen circumstances. But ... I am now thinking of possibly adding the NEW FIAT 124 ARBARTH as a second car. And yes, different experience then the Corvette for sure but since I was a kid I always wanted a new Fiat 124 roadster as well, simply for the fun/thrill/looks it gives a driver. just saying ;-) *It would be nice if the New 124 had about 250 HP, plus haha
I love the Spider's body proportions, but I do like the MX5's styling as I prefer it more modern. However, if Mazda stretched the hood of the MX5, it would be the one I'd buy if appearance were the only factor. As they are now, I'd put my money on the Fiat. BTW I test drove the Spider (Lusso) and I was in heaven. Seating is very cramped though, but I can still see taking a long journey in it as it was still comfortable.
I test drove the mx-5 sport (first time driving an mx-5 ever actually) for a good country and highway run, this week. I kept thinking the whole time 'I'm going to die if anything happens while I'm on this test drive' and, "this is fun." I realize I'm not an expert but I drive a TDI Golf and I'm used to my car feeling like it's on a string at times, just pulling it down the street. The mx-5 felt like a kid with lots of energy but not much power, if that makes sense. So to answer Alex's question, if the 124 has a turbo, much more torque down low, and feels more planted, I'll take a good look. Out of the two, only 124 has the chance to win me at this point.
Having owned 3 Mazdas, I'm not sure which one I'd pick, since both are built in Hiroshima, the quality is there. I think the 124 would look even better, & truer to the original, if it didn't have that lower grille. The Abarth trim does hide that lower grille well. It all boils down to the better deal, since the Fiat will likely have higher markups due to exclusivity. Also, as Consumer Reports Tom Muchler said, you can get a used previous gen MX-5 for half the new car price, & have just as much fun.
I think the MT/AT and the turbo will be the key points. At this time, I'll take the MX-5. However, the 124 is a nice car so we need to wait for reliability
1.) Would you choose Fiat Spider, Fiat Spider with Abarth, Mazda MX5 , or BMW Z4 Roadster, Porsche Caymen, or Porsche Boxster? 2.) Do any of them have room for additional Turbocharger/s or Supercharger/s?
Both are great cars. They both look good. The Mazda could pass for a Lotus. The Fiat gives you classic 124 out front and a hint of mini-Viper in the rear. Both would be fun to drive. The Fiat is harder edged and has a bit more power. Those buying a fun weekend car should definitely consider the Fiat. The Miata is a bit down on power in comparison, but it offers a bit better mileage and its softer suspension tuning might be a bit easier to live with on a day to day basis. If you are buying it to drive to work everyday the Miata might well be the one to go with.
I am looking forward to the coupe version which is rumoured to be in the pipeline for 2017. It replaces the folding cloth hood with a metal roof. Also, it may have more powerful engines under the bonnet producing a rumoured 200 bhp. The rally version Fiat have just launched might give us a clue as to how it will look. To my eyes, it looks stunning.
I was a big fan of the Mx5 2016. See Forza 6 model but I saw the Fiat 124 Spider and the Mx5 2016 in real life and I can say that the Spider is looking better to me in many way. Hard to explain but in the game the Mx5 looks so amazing. In person the design don't gives the same effect or maybe it is a different model....
Alex: 2016 MX5 GT 6MT with 23k miles and fully loaded or 2019 124 Classica with just the tech package (7 inch screen and XM) and new. About the same price. Mazda reliability and lots of goodies vs a brand new base model 124......can’t decide!!!’
I'm on the market for one or the other. I've held off on mx-5 to see how abarth 124 drives. Used to have a 500 abarth. If getting a base model, I'll probably get an mx-5 because no difference in driving characteristics between the sport and g.t. If getting the top model, I'll go with 124 abarth because of exhaust note and better front styling than base 124.
Both the MX-5 and the 124 Spider look like great cars. I think I like the looks of the Fiat better than the Mazda especially the Abarth. It has a classic, yet somehow more aggressive look than the MX-5. I also think the 1.4l Turbo has lots more aftermarket tweaking and tuning potential than the high compression 2.0 in the MX-5 here in the US. Yes you can see some nice gains on the 2.0 with headers and a cat back exhaust, but you can get similar boostgains from a simple performance tune on the 1.4 turbo for a lot less money and effort.
What a great review!! Great pace..Great Detailed info..Tough call between the two....I prefer the looks of the Fiat. Engine wise also I would prefer the turbo given the torque and power figures..and it still has an Mx5 Gearbox. yayyy!!! :)
I love the new Miata, all except the styling. When I've seen them on the road, I love their compact size and proportions but the front and rear just put me off. The Fiat 124 looks gorgeous from every angle. I'm not sure which engine I would prefer. I usually prefer naturally aspirated engines but I'd really have to test them both to be sure. For my money, I'd almost buy the 124 and then at the last second I'd go find a used 2nd-gen Porsche Boxster.
That was a fantastic review. I love how you addressed the elephant in the room. I love those cars. I'm still holding out beyond hope for a new MR2 spyder. The Fiat would be my choice IF it were not for that 1.4 ltr. The Miata would be my choice due to the 2.0 ltr. I hope they turbocharge it, but even if they don't, I'd throw a turbo kit on myself and have a turbo 2.0 vs that 1.4. By the way who cares about the metric system:) I kid, i kid.
NOT the same cars! Okay, know that I got your attention, let discuss why people should stop saying they're the same or similar cars. Other than the interior the two cars are almost completely different. 1. 100% Different exterior. 2. Different engines. 3. Different suspension setup. 4. Different manual transmission. 5. Same chassis, but stretched longer for the Fiat, so still different. 5. Different exhaust sound, the Fiat sounds much more aggressive. The thing that link these two different cars together more than anything else is... the BUYER. Both cars are going to apple to the same buyer, but as I just showed, that buyer will have two different cars to pick from.
Not so strange, Fiat (is was meant to be an Alfa Romeo, before they decided that Alfa should only make unique cars in Italy, not rebranded american or japanese models) have used 3 years in making this car, and im certain that this is the best idea ever, because of Mazda s quality.
aside from the engine are the other parts that are not on the Miata from Mazda or Fiat? things like the headlamps, taillamps and sheet metal. btw, amazing one man job. best in business and an art form in itself.
As I said in the video, the sheetmetal and lamps are 100% different. Those parts were designed by Fiat and built by Mazda. The interior is all built by Mazda as well but Fiat tweaks a few things very slightly. The instrument cluster is lightly touched, the leather is supposedly better quality and the fabrics are different.
The new Spider Design Manager Felix Kilbertus was previously lead designer at Pininfarina. The longer hood, deck and facia lines of the Fiat come from Centro Stile in Turin. Great respect was paid to the original 124 everywhere; from the front grill and headlight bezels to the signature double hood bumps, the curved sheet metal under the side door handles and the rear tail lights. The engine is a genuine Italian made Multiair 1.4 Turbo that we all know and love in the Fiat 500 Abarth. Unlike Mazda’s minimalist exhaust note, the Fiat Spider rumbles with its twin pipes and deep baritones that say “Abarth Inside”. You can’t get that noise on the MX-5. The Fiat can get many of the high performance mods now available on the Abarth 500 so we will see a 200+ HP spider prowling the streets soon. The Fiat has unique door panels and latches, hand crafted leather stitching throughout the Lusso cabin too, plus a fabulous Bose 9 speaker sound system.
Alex, great reviews, I like your delivery and style. What do you think about the 124 Spider as a daily driver? Would it get old fast? is it comfortable enough? Thanks
would you recommend 124 as a winter vehicle or only with a second set of rims/tires for that driving. Rear wheel has always been suspect in winter driving...comments.
I currently have a Mazda Miata and I love this car such that i had two them. My Miata is the second one. My dad once owned a Fiata Spider and they are beautiful. Very hard decision... I am just a two seater gal. Only thing would be just to change up brand names but have the same two seater roster file...... hmmmm.
I've owned two Miatas and have always been a big fan, but I'm not crazy about the look of the current model, especially from the front. I very much like the look of this Fiat, but wonder about the reliability of its engine, which is not from Mazda. One of the big benefits of a Miata has been its reliability. Can anyone give me more insight into on how much of a concern this should be for me?
what a great review! I also prefer the Fiat 124 Spider over the mx-5, and hopefully i will have one in he future, dream car :D Also love the Abarth version, but it's just too expensive for me. In Portugal a used one is still over 36k€
10:00 fiat considers them competition because they're cute. most miata sales are because it's a cute little convertible, not for the performance, and fiat is trying to make a slightly different flavor of cute convertible, it just happens to be an EXCELLENT cheapish sports car
I ab-so-lute-ly love how Alex doesn't really use fillers while talking....just listen to other journalist they all continuously be like :"uhh,umm,theuh,anduhh"...etc.
agreed and much appreciated by me too
Absolutely, the information is rapid-fire, clear and hits all of the points that could possibly matter....very well done
all substance, no fluff
+SammyT nice pseudoscience.
Yup. Fillers like umm or uh are used when verbal skills are too slow and the mind needs that half beat to catch up. It includes pet phrases people insert in their speech like “you know”. Even that weird up-lilt that women use that sounds like they’re asking a question. Its a time delay. How is it doing?
Curt Buy her a carport and a remote starter. Then order the Fiat with everything hanging and dragging.
Forgot to add that you have the BEST car reviews anywhere... always good info to help people make good choices.

Ask any 500 abarth owner (the engine is basically the same unit) if they've had any engine troubles and they'll tell you no, or very little, usually just spark plugs needing gapping sometimes for smooth idle.
not to mention it can be tuned reliably too. There's a tune for the 500 abarth that puts it up to 230 WHEEL horsepower, which considering the weight of the car is staggeringly good power to weight ratio, actually comparable to a new mustang GT
My 8 years old 110.000kms 170hp Fiat Bravo Sport approved this message.
Would love to see a Mustang GT follow a 500 abarth around any corner :)
I checked Consumer Reports, they agree with you too. All of the drive train components seem to be the reliable parts.
Wow so much power in a such small engine. Loved the 124 60s model!
yup. fiata ftw! saving up for for one. classica with the entertainment upgrade. the suspension, brakes, etc I'll do myself
Your joy in putting the 124 through the auto cross section says a lot about the car. Good job.
that blue paint and tan brown leather interior is stunning! wish mazda had that color
your reviews are always so seamless
Great video.
I was thinking of buying an Mx 5 but I like the 124 spider better.
Thanks.
Owner of 2018 124 Lusso.........had 3 Fiat 2000's in the 80's...........you can have my new one when you pry it from my cold dead fingers........Great Reincarnation.....
This is the only Fiat I would presently buy.
Yea look weird at first but it's something special
Really like the exterior of the car. If I was shopping for a weekend car I'd try this one.
Alex, those are the most fascinating head lights in the auto industry! I absolutely love them! They are so unique, so.. alive! I wish Fiat would adopt those on other models too.
What an awesome review. Thorough, covered all the points, comparisons, without any bullshit.
Agree..... Loved the 124 of the 60s. Love the firmness of this car!
Toyota's naming is the 86 from what I heard. Now if fiat made a hard top version like Mazda is doing, I'd be sold
Great review Alex! Very detailed and giving lots of information.
I freaking love this car!!!!!! You are sooooooo lucky Alex!!!
I loved the old 124 and I love the new one too.
124!! All day....everyday. Nice review as well.
Alex: What camera is that? The HD is outrageous! If this is the camera I'm thinking it is, I"m buying one as soon as you confirm. Thanks for your amazing work! I'm stunned.
This was on the new Sony Z150 4K cam.
Gosh.... You are an amazing good reviewer. Thanks!
I like the 124.
The Miata (MX5) looks to me as a present from a Mc Donalds Happy Meal
I_noSc0pedJFK Fair enough! If you can actually make this a daily driver more power to you I understand! I hope you drive the shit out of it!
+Angus O'Leary lol i hope so! 😆👍
Although it's got Fiats own engine, I don't think that would hinder reliability, Fiat engines tend to be pretty good these days!
the best comparison review of these cars. thank you
The Abarth exhaust makes up for it for me. Thanks for the review, the Abarth model just beat the MX-5 for me.
A big difference between the normal 124 and the Abarth version is the sport mode. It is the only way to disable the stability system. If you want to go sideways with this car, you need the Abarth.
A perfect combination of Italian style and Japanese build quality/reliability.
I just brought home and Abarth 124 and I love it to pieces... my MX-5 neighbor across the street is kinda freaking out..:)
Simply...I just want this car.
I'm looking for a new car and am doubting between a Mazda 3 Sedan, Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V or this Fiat 124 Spider. Good review, thanks.
Alex, great review as usual but I am just not into the FIAT styling. For some reasons, I actually prefer the Mazda's design, especially rear. Anyway, I would be very happy with either one as long as it is manual :)
Very thorough review! Great channel!
Great review. Lots of great info here. Awesome job!
I love this "Fix It Again Tony!" car!
Great review. I would take the Fiat 6 speeds manual, because it look great, got more power and it's build by Mazda.
Fiat 124 just looks better, more refined. Dare I say a little more masculine. My only worry would be with the reliability of the Fiat engine. Love your reviews, keep up the good work.
Very reliable engine made for crazy driving italians! -lol- Really it is very reliable (also in Fiat 500 Abarth)
Yes! The Fiat's looks make the Miata look even uglier. The Fiat engine is supposed to be amazing in terms of reliability.
Great review!!! Sold on the FiAT -124!
The Abarth headlamps are just the base headlamp. The bigger LED style is part of the premium package.
+Genericasian good points and do we really even know what the longevity of the ski active in terms of super high compression and DI??
I
still love my 124 spider
great in depth review and comparison, thank you. I would most likely choose the Fiat. I like the styling better and more power at lower rpm
Alex, can you please start using Metric instead of Imperial and mention if the cars have a locking glove box.
Please and thank you.
Sorry, 90% of our views are from the USA where 90% or folks are more familiar with English standard measurements.
And yes, different experience then the Corvette for sure but since I was a kid I always wanted a new Fiat 124 roadster as well, simply for the fun/thrill/looks it gives a driver. just saying ;-)
*It would be nice if the New 124 had about 250 HP, plus haha
I love the Spider's body proportions, but I do like the MX5's styling as I prefer it more modern. However, if Mazda stretched the hood of the MX5, it would be the one I'd buy if appearance were the only factor. As they are now, I'd put my money on the Fiat. BTW I test drove the Spider (Lusso) and I was in heaven. Seating is very cramped though, but I can still see taking a long journey in it as it was still comfortable.
Nice! I had 1971 back in the day. Great car but a rust-bucket. Lived north of Boston--winter salt and ocean air.
124 spider any day great car will order soon
Outstanding video
Having owned 3 Mazdas, I'm not sure which one I'd pick, since both are built in Hiroshima, the quality is there. I think the 124 would look even better, & truer to the original, if it didn't have that lower grille. The Abarth trim does hide that lower grille well. It all boils down to the better deal, since the Fiat will likely have higher markups due to exclusivity. Also, as Consumer Reports Tom Muchler said, you can get a used previous gen MX-5 for half the new car price, & have just as much fun.
I love Miatas, but this thing looks great. Long live the British Roadster.
This is a pretty darn good review..
Very informative and thorough video. Can the crazy screen on the dash be folded down or removed?
Great review. Maybe the best I've seen...thanks!Is the flat black hood/trunk the only way to get the Abarth? I don't like it, at all.
Alex- because of the gearing, how does the RPM at highway speed compare between Miata and 124?
I was a big fan of the Mx5 2016. See Forza 6 model but I saw the Fiat 124 Spider and the Mx5 2016 in real life and I can say that the Spider is looking better to me in many way. Hard to explain but in the game the Mx5 looks so amazing. In person the design don't gives the same effect or maybe it is a different model....
There's turbo lag and then there's turbo lag. Just how much do you feel it in this car?
Fiat 124 Spider over the MX-5 for sure!
Will there be a hardtop edition in the future like the Miata will offer next year?
In Italy 124 Abarth costs about € 10.000 more than MX-5 2.0. Madness.
Does the Fiat 124 have a limited slip diff? MX-5 has it on the Club and GT I believe.
Alex do you smoke , also amazing review
Great
respect was paid to the original 124 everywhere; from the front grill and
headlight bezels to the signature double hood bumps, the curved sheet metal
under the side door handles and the rear tail lights. The engine is a genuine Italian made Multiair 1.4 Turbo that we all know and love in the Fiat 500 Abarth. Unlike Mazda’s minimalist exhaust note, the Fiat Spider rumbles with its twin pipes
and deep baritones that say “Abarth Inside”. You can’t get that noise on the MX-5.
The Fiat can get many of the high performance mods now available on the Abarth 500 so we will see a 200+ HP spider prowling the streets soon. The Fiat has unique door panels and latches, hand crafted leather
stitching throughout the Lusso cabin too, plus a fabulous Bose 9 speaker sound system.
very thorough review, thanks!
I also prefer the Fiat 124 Spider over the mx-5, and hopefully i will have one in he future, dream car :D
Also love the Abarth version, but it's just too expensive for me. In Portugal a used one is still over 36k€
I drove an MX-5 this weekend. Waiting to drive the 124 Spider. I thought the dealer would have them by now.
bought mine yesterday... couldn't resist.
+tickdog3 which one did you buy the fiat or the mazda?
+Maurizio De Caro I bought the Fiat Spider Lusso.
10:00
fiat considers them competition because they're cute.
most miata sales are because it's a cute little convertible, not for the performance, and fiat is trying to make a slightly different flavor of cute convertible, it just happens to be an EXCELLENT cheapish sports car
