Fun fact: this was originally supposed to be a revival of the Alfa Romeo Spider, but midway through production, Fiat-Chrysler's CEO Sergio Marchionne decided to keep the manufacturing of Alfa Romeo vehicles entirely in Italy, and so they decided to bring back the Fiat 124 name from the classic '60s car given that the company's previous roadster, the Fiat Barchetta, had gone out of production all the way back in 2006 and felt like a successor was needed. The Alfa Romeo Spider project ended up evolving into the 4C sports car, developed from a concept and built by Maserati, the luxury car division of Fiat.

So true. Fiat should have done what Volkswagen did in the 50s/60s with the Ghia; use Italian artistry for the body panels but leave the rest German or in this case Japanese, so it actually works. I hope the electricals are Mazda and not Italian or (gasp) LUCAS Lighting the prince of darkness.

I can tell it's so easy to drift Sometimes on lonley roads I really had fun When you force him to he gently but his back out and let you control it so easely
It should be also pretty easy to tune for way more power. I've seen some italians tune that engine for 360-400 horsepower in a 500 abarth. If you leave it at stock that engine is pretty bulletproof with given maintenence.
M. Edwards if it is infact possible, they’ll either need a proprietary factory FIAT or Mazda scan tool. At Audi we have to use ODISS to change these types of settings on most cars.
Eric Ortiz as decent as the new Miata looks (which will never compare to an NA) this in white with black trim looks incredible. it reminds me why I like to the Saturn Sky over Pontiac Solstice when that was a thing
We have ones of these. Puts a smile on my face every time I see it and get in it. Had of for a little over two years and 16k miles. No issues, no problems...just real weekend fun.
We have a 2018 one, red with the black stripe. Had it nearly 3 years now. Manual transmission. Yeah it's not winning any races, but who cares. It's a blast to drive and everyone asks what it is everywhere I go. I love it. The trunk holds a surprisingly large amount. I can fit a full grocery cart in it; even more if I am alone and put stuff in the passenger seat.
@@maxpoweroverdrive i'm sure it depends on era brand and how the previous owner treated it so I don't really buy into that but nah. That's the joke and stereotype though
Doug, no one said it was a better Miata, my late wife liked the styling of the Fiat over the Miata, that is not hard to imagine when you compare the two side to side. The Fiat 124 Spider is an attractive roadster, my wife sadly passed away this past April, I now drive her Fiat 124 Spider. It is almost paid off and a roadster car is fun to drive no matter the origin. It is mostly Miata inside with a very reliable Fiat engine , a nicer interior and the styling is better than the Miata. To each his own. I will drive that Fiat for a long time due to the sentimental value alone.
Before i owned a Miata i preferred the 124. Having now seen the nd2 up close (especially the RF), and getting to spend time with it, I prefer the mx-5. The 124 is very classic. You know what you're getting. The mx-5 has angles that can only really be fully appreciated in person and in a variety of lighting conditions.@@sambethune
I test drove both cars & the 2017 Fiat 124 Spyder Abarth has turbo lag off the line making it slower from a stop to 60 mph. The clutch also felt much heavier which killed my enthusiasm for the 124 ! Its also heavier in turns so it feels less athletic. The next day I went to the Mazda dealer & they had basically the same car - 2016 MX-5 Club soft top in the same color even with the Brembo / BBS package. Pulling out of the dealer lot immediately the super light clutch felt so much better. The throttle response was instant so it was quicker off the line & felt very light in the turns. The Fiat Vs Mazda was no contest as I am all about how the car drives. The Mazda MX-5 wins in the important places & it sits in my garage 6.5 years now since new. Daily drive in 4 season weather as when the colder temps hit I put the winter wheels / tires on so its not a garage queen. Love that car !
no n9 He keeps asking the date about their quirks and features so that he can give them a Doug score at the end of the date and compare them to the other previous dates
I definitely agree that the MX-5/ 124 are loads more fun around a track than a more powerful car. I’ve been working with cars 15 years as a marketer and I’ve had Hellcats, AMGs, Vettes, Mustangs, M series, you name it on the track in some kind of “I need to learn the car” style excuse. Big name big power cars are certainly fun but you have to know how to drive and I’m no expert. These little 4 cylinder rwd sports cars INCLUDING the BRZ/86 are fun in the sense that you can’t mess up. It’s like being in a go kart. Just fun, fun, fun. Anything over 400 horsepower will try to kill you if you don’t pay it the right kind of respect. But these little guys are just freaking bundles of joy to rip around in.
I concur, I've owned a lot of muscle cars myself, currently own a MX-5, had it 5 yrs.. Still these little roadsters don't get the respect they deserve for being all about fun and not about speed! Folks that have no clue call them "girl cars" etc., which is completely idiotic.
Doug is the type of guy to complain about the dome light being too dim during a bright sunny day. Seriously though, Doug have you ever tried to read your phone during a really sunny day? It's nearly impossible even with max brightness...of course dimming it will be impossible to see. Now next time you're driving at night try using your phone on 100% brightness lol it's worse than driving with the dome light on.
I have owned or driven almost every car out there, outside of supercars (911 Turbo is closest), but I absolutely love my 124! Thanks for telling me about the secret stash compartments.
Not true, I'am driving a new Mazda 3 which shares the same Entertainment System with the Abarth (as i just learned) > and the night mode is REALLY really more than enough, when its dark outside - I change that everytime i drive after 8 a.m
Samejima Mamimi hardly anyone would maybe an infant but its an infant. im not a car guy and i wouldnt be ablw to tell you what it is but i know its not a lambo
I have a CX-9 with the same infotainment system and the safety is just for if a warning light comes on, so if the tire pressure is low it'll actually say, "Tire Pressure Low" on that tab.
Can't change the volume of a mechanical relay: The blinker noise that you probably grew up hearing didn’t actually come from a thermal flasher like the one I mentioned above. More likely it came from an electronic style flasher, which uses a little chip to send a pulse to a relay. That relay is just an electromagnet, consisting of a set of wound coils that produce a magnetic field when current is sent through them. Working in a similar way as a typical solenoid switch, this magnetic field pulls up a hinged metal armature, and disconnects a set of contacts and cuts current to the lights. Once the small chip stops sending current to the coil, the magnetic field collapses, and no longer pulls the metal armature, and a little coil spring will pull the contacts closed again, sending juice to the lights.
It's not supposed to be funny... it's supposed to be commentary on how he doesn't take time to research these basic concepts. Drives me nuts, but I'll still support and watch all his videos.
I was floored at how well a new MX-5 handles like it's on rails on the Autobahn at 135 MPH with a relatively short wheelbase. I wish the 124 had the new Miata's retractable hardtop.
In some board room in Tokyo some translator is trying to act like doug and explain to the Japanese engineers what quarks and features are. And explaining if doug is actually 6'3 or 6'4...and why that matters for future production.
I have to say that, after watching many of your Car-review competitors here on You-tube, I look forward to your reviews far more than all the others' combined. Your sense of humor laced with it's outlandish sarcasm and disdain---not just for the car companies themselves but towards your viewers as well...lol...is so identical to mine that it brings me back every day just to see if you've posted another review. You are only the second "personality" that I have ever subscribed to here on You-tube. And yes...you should feel honored........hmmm, can u feel the sarcasm dripping from that line?!?...Keep 'em comin', Doug....
You can get a better active axle back exhaust on the MX-5 Miata & still have $3,000 in your pocket left over versus a 124 Spyder Abarth ! Plus the Fiat engineers comically buried the elemental oil filter under the air intake & put it UPSIDE DOWN ! What a mess to change the oil !
Yeah we sure did. I have one sitting in my garage. Our Abarth is the same as the Abarth esse esse in Europe. We didn't get 135 hp Abarth, but the 160 hp esse esse Abarth 500.
Carl Benz Well there’s really no explanation for it, it’s just my subjective opinion. That being said, I’m not a big fan of the squinty-eyed look of the mx-5. I also like how the front and rear lights of the 124 are pushed to the corners, it gives the car a broader, more brutish look than Mazda.
That Abarth has perhaps the best exhaust note I've ever heard on a four cylinder. And I gotta say, I myself do find it more attractive than a Miata. It has those crisp, athletic Italian lines that quintisized Italy for it's sports cars.
my pops has this car and its tuned up to beast level with superdown springs and 17 inch tires with spacers and a bolt on catback screamer exhaust. the car has the best handling the car scene has seen. the acceleration is immaculate, and my god the turns are incredible. pop a 90 degree turn at 40 miles per hour without a single slip. Its a beautiful car and performs like a dream
I think Mazda makes the best Looking Japanese cars and yet I don’t love the Miata. The headlights look sleepy the taillights seem disjointed. I much prefers the traditional look of the Fiat.
Asad Suhail yes indeed I agree the original Miata was a clean pure design. I lament the passing of pop up head lights perhaps one day they will return.
Pop-up headlights are dead, due to pedestrian safety standards. The ND's squinty look is because it has the lowest hood of any production car today -- an engineering miracle given bumper height and pedestrian safety requirements, and drive train packaging requirements. The pinched rear end is aerodynamic and saves weight. I will concede that both take getting used to, but overall I think the design looks aggressive and modern, which IMO is exactly the direction Mazda needed to go with the MX-5 to remain relevant.
I drive a 2001 Miata (the NB2) and I have to agree, Marc. For some reason the NB4 looks disjointed, like a team of different people were tasked with designing part of the car. To me its front end is the worst part. With its squinty headlights and smiling grille, the car looks like some automotive version of the degrading caricatures of the Japanese during WWII. All that's missing are a couple of buck teeth and a coolie hat. I'm quite happy with my NB, but if I were to buy a new car I would look long and hard at the Subaru BRZ, as I might rather have one than a new Miata or Fiat. I've had a lot of good luck with flat fours and the BRZ is basically a Datsun 240Z for this time in history.
I drive a 2003 (which I think is a close tie for best looking miata with the NA) and I'm really disappointed by the ND. I don't mind the front end, but those taillights are ghastly. I'd still own an ND just because they're awesome cars but Mazda has so many good looking cars right now.. why couldn't they do the same with the Miata?
I love how Doug enjoys finding and talking about the quirks. He has an nice smile in his face and you see that he really enjoys cars and making videos.
You can get a track pack or something (sport pack?) for the ND which has the diff. I think I'd go aftermarket, though. The abarth is a hell of a lot more pricey than the base and the only thing it really offers performance wise is the diff.

"It's nice to have a big hazard light switch, in an Italian car..." I see what you did there. Lol.

Too bad it's actually a Mazda.
The engine is from Fiat though.

Listen to the fiat 500 abarth! Same engine but no muffler stock
Actually I have looked at both cars side by side and I prefer the styling of the MX-5 (or Miata) over the 124. Different strokes for different folks.
Ripperoni
Before i owned a Miata i preferred the 124. Having now seen the nd2 up close (especially the RF), and getting to spend time with it, I prefer the mx-5.
The 124 is very classic. You know what you're getting. The mx-5 has angles that can only really be fully appreciated in person and in a variety of lighting conditions.@@sambethune
It is though.

Only because its JDM engine, from Mazda. But I have to question the rest of the car. Fix It Again Tony.

Not true, I'am driving a new Mazda 3 which shares the same Entertainment System with the Abarth (as i just learned) > and the night mode is REALLY really more than enough, when its dark outside - I change that everytime i drive after 8 a.m

Doug's the type of guy to not understand that the "turn signal volume" is for the warning chime when you leave it on too long.
I wouldn't understand that either, why not have have an option to make the ticking sound louder so you don't forget it's on in the first place
on my lexus gs 2006 you cant even hear the clicking sound.
Most modern cars (mainly LED lit cars) don't use relays for the turn signals anymore. The sounds are played through the speakers.
It's not supposed to be funny... it's supposed to be commentary on how he doesn't take time to research these basic concepts. Drives me nuts, but I'll still support and watch all his videos.

Damn, that is a very handsome little roadster! Much better looking than the new mx-5 in my opinion.
Why?
Carl Benz Well there’s really no explanation for it, it’s just my subjective opinion. That being said, I’m not a big fan of the squinty-eyed look of the mx-5. I also like how the front and rear lights of the 124 are pushed to the corners, it gives the car a broader, more brutish look than Mazda.
That Abarth has perhaps the best exhaust note I've ever heard on a four cylinder. And I gotta say, I myself do find it more attractive than a Miata. It has those crisp, athletic Italian lines that quintisized Italy for it's sports cars.

Having driven one of these, it takes a minute to get used to the look alone, the rest feels just like a regular Miata.

A bit sad that there was no mention of it getting a limited slip diff over the miata.
you can also get it on the Miata thats why
+eldragon00 I kinda doubt that, Mazda started using LSDs on the NA lol
You can get a track pack or something (sport pack?) for the ND which has the diff.
I think I'd go aftermarket, though. The abarth is a hell of a lot more pricey than the base and the only thing it really offers performance wise is the diff.
Doug DeMuro is not about stuff that car enthusiasts care about.
I've never once heard Doug mention a differential, tbh.
