2018 Fiat 124 Spider ABARTH // A Cooler Miata?

  • This week I face a conundrum. The Fiat 124 Spider Abarth is certainly flawed. So why then, did I really like it by the end of the week? (NOTE: when I discuss the trunk lights not working, I mean the lights INSIDE the trunk, NOT the brake lights or taillights and there is a switch to turn them on that I somehow didn’t see.)
    Is the new MX5 Miata really THAT different? I was dying to find out, so I spent a week with the 2019 MX-5 RF. SUBSCRIBE for MORE car content weekly!

      @AJ88874 no. They're not notoriously unreliable anymore. The only unusual maintenance item is the 5w40 Euro spec oil, and you can't exceed the 5,000 mile interval or you risk harm to the MultiAir unit.
      I'm about 2 1/2 years into daily driving it to the tune of about 30k miles since I got the car, and I've autocrossed it, with no unexpected issues.

    I've had mine for about a year. I love it. It gets a lot of attention. Suggestions,
    1. find sport mode, your turbo will kick in at around 2400rpm instead of 3200.
    2. Add a cold air induction system, $345.
    3. Upgrade your turbo diverter valve, $145.
    4' If you are feeling really adventurous flash you CPU and give a tune, $799.
    All this for about $1200. No more turbo lag. At the $2700 range you upgrade your turbo, $1500. It will increase your HP from 164 to around 250 with 284lbs of torque are the rear wheels.... All parts are bolt on and are easy to install. With upgrades the 124 Abarth will smoke anything in its class. Or you can just enjoy a great little roadster.

    • @valentinorossi7771
      @valentinorossi7771 3 года назад +4

      250 hp and 284 lbs ft out of 1368 cc equates to a specific power of 182.7 hp/lt and 207 lb ft / lt. the latter of which is considerably higher than the current A45S AMG. Extracting that much power and torque FOR SURE will shorten your engine life considerably. Remeber this engine is not the latest turbocharged powerplant like in the M3, A45S, C63 etc.

    • @OwThatHurt46

      @@valentinorossi7771 not really, while these cant pull amazing numbers on a stock long block this platform is really neutered from the factory and has several inefficiencies. fixing those "issues" and providing more efficient flow and proper strength multiair springs because the stock ones cause leakage on a little higher boost, really wakes it up and thats not a crazy high goal if you go even that far. just an intake, downpipe, tune puts them around 200hp and you didnt stress anything but just let it breathe.

      @@valentinorossi7771 IMO it is a good thing it is not a modern engine. It's cast iron, simple construction. I have a car with a Nissan MR engine from 2004: 1.6, turbo-charged, 230 hp in stock form: 143hp/lt. Visiting track days about 5 times a year. No engine problems so far. That being said, this review is really accurate. I have a 124 as well and the throttle response on the low end is wanting. My local autocross is small, so when I do go out to race it I'm forced to ride the clutch often to keep the revs high and the boost engaged and that shouldn't be the case, and for all the aftermarket bolt ons that are available for this car, the (two) tuning options, and the MSRP this car had while it was still being sold? Not worth it. Only now in the used car market does it make sense to get, and even then no more than $20k for low mileage. I'm very much happy with mine, I daily drive it and it's relatively rock solid except for some annoyances here and there, but I also only paid like $17k for the car used and it hasn't gone upside down only because the used car market is still insane post-covid.

    I’ve owned two Miatas and now this 124. I am much more excited about driving this everyday. This car has much more character in my opinion. The difference is engines is true, but like he said...you fall in love with it. There really isn’t that much turbo lag to turn you away. The looks and compliments I get from complete strangers is incredible compared to the Miatas. People ask me if it’s a Porsche, Jag or even a Ferrari. I haven’t had one mechanical issue so I’m not sure what the speedo issues are he’s talking about. I live in a medium size Florida city and have not seen one other Abarth yet. It’s a head-turner for sure. I would wish these 6’3” guys would stop reviewing these small roadsters and complain about not fitting in them. Buy a Corvette then, the car isn’t designed for your frame.

    • @TimHarbison

      I have to agree. The 124 is much more "interesting" to drive. And a lot more fun in my opinion. Even in non-Abarth trim. And an auto to boot.... don't judge... arthritic knees and rush hour traffic finally pushed me to an auto after decades of driving manuals...
      There is no significant turbo "lag". The boost threshold is higher than a lot of turbocharged econoboxes. There is a difference. Too many people confuse the two.
      I daily mine in North-East Ohio. Put good Pirelli winter tires on it, and I can cruise by the idiots who think AWD makes them invincible as they sit in a ditch waiting for a tow in the winter. I get looks every day and questions at least weekly about it, and still haven't seen another one in the wild around me, even though my dealer has sold plenty of them.
      This one is a keeper. I don't buy a car for its resale value, I buy it because I love it.

    What a ridiculous review. I test drove both the MX-5 and the Spider before buying: chose the Spider hands down. Besides the great exhaust sound, the better tuned suspension, the quieter cabin, the Fiat offers exotic Italian looks that the Mazda simply cannot touch. Two years later, I still get unsolicited compliments from total strangers on my Spider. All I got on my NB MX-5 were “chick car” jokes. Fiat took a Miata and turned it into something that looks and feels well beyond its affordable price point.

    You are exactly right about turbo lag ... that killed me in my test of a 2017 Fiat 124 Spyder Abarth. Same with that clutch feel , WHY so heavy in a small sports car. My test drive went in traffic that clutch was killing my fun along with that lag ! I did the 124 test drive 1st & don't get me wrong I liked the way it looked however my test car was all white with black trim no flat black hood or trunk. Those Abarth badges are HUGE ! Red tach in the cluster was a nice touch. Next day I test drove a 2016 MX-5 Club with Brembo / BBS pkg. What a difference in feel ! Almost a polar opposite of the 124. Instant throttle response with a flat torque curve meaning power is there thru the entire rev range ( just don't go too far ). Light easy to use clutch makes shifting a joy NOT a burden ! Shifter just feels like it was made for my hand & the pattern was easy to know what gear your in unlike that 124. In corners the ND Club was athletic very quick to react to inputs , the 124 felt much heavier in corners. So I chose the 2016 MX-5 Club as my daily driver here in 4 season Illinois. Winter tires makes this car almost as fun in the winter to drive ! Yea the Fiat 124 has more exclusive ownership but back to back the MX-5 put the grin on my face constantly. For that there us no substitute. I do get why some people wpould choose the 124 but probably because they didn't do a back to back test.

    #savethemanuals...I get why FIAT did what they did w/the interior, but they could have added a few more "Italian flair" IMO; however, I don't what the co-production agreement said/included. I'm pretty sure Mazda didn't want the Spyder to out Miata the Miata, so compromises were made. imagine putting the best of both cars into one; you could create the "ultimate" Mazdaspeed Miata. How much again for a "hand-painted stripe"; you've got to be kidding me. I'd like to see the 124 Spyder developed and carried over to the next iteration - 130, 142, 160 Spyder or what ever they would call it. Can you race it in the MX-5 Cup?

    I can see this car appealing over time and causing pride of ownership - a few hours at a press launch ain't going to give a fair impression. The turbo can be tuned to suit, though it is a shame that the motor from the 4C could not be used. That said, the new 2019 Miata has a development that is long overdue. No, not more power, it had enough power for the canyons already. The new development is a telescoping wheel, that alone is enticing enough to bug the dealer for a test drive. There are 2018 Clubs reduced to just under $25k at the local dealer, tempting but always think used Boxster is a better way to go than a new Miata.

    • @ThrottleHouse
      @ThrottleHouse  6 лет назад +1

      Unless you are talking reliability. I shopped for a boxster for a while then got an NC Miata haha. Also this wasn’t a press launch. I had the car for a whole week.

    • @93455Driver
      @93455Driver 6 лет назад

      Throttle House Yep, was agreeing that the week with the car was the difference. Motoman had the base Panamera and was expecting not to like it, but ended up thinking it was good. I also had an NB Miata (needed a foamectomy though google it) then an FRS.......but did test drive an old Boxster, it is a addictive. The owner let me drive it around the hills north of Santa Barbara, told me to keep the revs up....the sound is other worldly. It is not the Porsche reliability or even the IMS that concerns, but the maintenance of a Porsche is up there......but life is not a practice session!

      There is a really good deal on a fully loaded (except for brembos and recaros) 2017 black abarth with under a thousand miles near me, too bad it's an automatic, I've only driven manual abarths and I'm afraid automatic is going to ruin the car.
      19 Miata gets a telescoping steering wheel as well as more power (I'm pretty sure fiata will still have more power at my elevation which is above 4000 ft) as well as some other features, and I'm sure 19 fiata will get them as well, not sure if the power is getting increased or staying the same though.
      SS convertible will be nicer for road trips and daily driving, but also a lot more expensive to own and less enjoyable at low speeds.

      My WRX is 18 and I have the worst buyer's remorse ever. My wife wanted me to get something nicer and more practical than my s2000. WRX seemed decent initially and I thought I'd get used to the clutch and the engine tune, and it would get better after it's broken in, but I ended up hating it more and more. Yes, I got used to some of its aspects, but it didn't make it better in any way. It's a capable car that is also extremely boring to drive, it's like my inputs don't matter and the car does everything for me, and it's really bad in traffic.
      I actually enjoy driving a 16000 lbs+ equipment and materials work truck more than the WRX, the limits of that thing are so low that I'm always involved even though sometimes it is borderline scary.

      I thought about this, but then my wife would complain about the seats and noise again, she's really not comfortable in it and it scared her. She said she'd be ok with fiata/Miata (we found fiata to be a bit quieter, and I like its turbocharged engine more at our altitude), and she really liked Camaro(but that car seems like it's too much for the street and a lot more money on maintenance/insurance/gas/repairs).
      I'm also considering a Mazdaspeed Miata, 2.5 or 3rd gen boxster (I've driven a couple 2nd gens and was rather disappointed), or even NC Miata (there is a flyin Miata supercharged one with brake and suspension upgrades for sale nearby). I was always curious about e46 and e92 m3 but there are too many issues and I'm sure I will be disappointed.
      And I wouldn't mind something a bit more comfortable as well, having Android auto and a back up camera sounds nice.
      And there is a gti/golf R as well as CTR(if we could find one without a mark-up) and upcoming Veloster N on the nice daily driver side.
      WRX is trying to be fun to drive and nice/usable, but doesn't deliver either.

    Not easy to weigh all the upsides this has against the huge downside of having a turbo motor (both Mazda's naturally aspirated units are dreamlike). Add the fact that you can be sure Mazda and its assistance network and spare parts will be around 10, 15, 20 years from now, while it's highlt dubious that Abarth/FIAT will (but then you can still use Mazda spare parts when something breaks, they are the same and what's not the same like dampers you can use custom ones). Very hard choice - and now the 124 has been discontinued in many countries, it's a time-limited choice if you want a new one.

    For all interested i suggest checking out the torque graph of the Abarth 124: www.automobile-catalog.com/curve/2018/2407595/abarth_124_spider_mt.html
    200 nm at already 1500 rpm and the max of 250 at 2500 rpm. I've driven one myself and the GOOD thing of this engine IS that you got lots of torque in lower revs. So what you're saying is just wrong.

    Nice try, Thomas. Looks are subjective, of course, and both the MX5 and the 124 are beautiful cars imo. But the classic Italian sports car looks of the 124 really push my buttons. However, I owned (and loved) a fatally flawed Mazda RX8 with a stratospheric red line and NO torque, whatsoever. A dream on the track and a slug when I had to share a public road. It was like driving a 650CC Japanese motorcycle. The 124 appears to have a similar character.
    Having spent some time in Italy, I can testify as to the gorgeous models of Milan. I can dream...but in the real world I'll appreciate my (also gorgeous) wife who is much, much lower maintenance.

    I actually prefer the Miata rear better. The Fiat 124 Spider has the generic lobster claw tail lights which look exactly the same as all the other Civics and Nissans and Toyotas out there. Following the trend and completely unoriginal from an "Italian" design perspective. I love the front end of the Abarth better, but the rear is just... ugh.

      actually, the tails on the spider harken back to the tails on the original 124 Spider. I happen to own both an original 124 and a new 500 Abarth. Put the new 124 spider next to an original and the design completely makes sense. Having said that, I would love to drop the turbo 1.4 in under the hood of my spider in place of the 1800 that is currently sitting in that hole
