Great review , cheers . I traded in mx5 NC on a sunny afternoon whim, without reading any reviews...! If any of my mates had done that I’d call them a plonker. Fortunately I love it and your review has confirmed I made a good choice. Anyone looking for a roadster that looks and sounds like it’s from the 60’s but wants modern tech and reliability you could do a lot worse than the Abarth 124. Safe motoring all...
Right, as an owner of one of these. For all of you who slate this.... Having a green eyed monster is such a shame 😞. Just a few more points not mentioned in this review. Why did you not mention probably the best car to drive at night ? The headlights are the best ever. The headlights turn in the same direction as the car travels. Heated seats and the best heater for a winters day driving. So proud I own 1.
Thanks for the comment Tony. I didn't drive it at night as I had it during the summer. They are fantastic little cars and I'd love to own one of it had just a bit more space in the cabin for the taller driver. Enjoy yours and drive safe :-)
Hey I’m picking up my 2018 Abarth 24 Spider this Wednesday. Only done 14,000 miles. I simply can’t wait. Never had a two seater before. And it seems the right time now I’ve reached 60 🤣
Similar stateside. They all arrive in North America without the stripe, and if you want it added, it's done in a shop before the vehicle ships to the dealer. I believe it's a $1000 USD touch stateside. Personally, I passed on it because I'm just not all that keen on the look, and given that my Abarth is black to begin with, well, why add a matt black hood and trunk? lol
Superb review, as usual Peter, and thanks for the mention. I seem to recall reading it somewhere many years ago that the reasons that rally or racing cars have a matt black bonnet is so that the sun doesn't reflect off the bonnet into the drivers eyes when racing! I could be wrong. Cheers, Jon.
Great review on a Fab car. I've had and raced many MX5s and now have a 124 Spider. Being a Turbo it responds well to an ECU tune. And that makes it awesome on the road.. I have a track day booked in the end of the month, can't wait. Have a Fab weekend
I know I am coming at this a bit late, but the original 124 spider was produced until 1985.5. After Fiat stopped production in 1981, it became the "Pininfarina Azzura" until the coachbuilder needed the space to produce the Cadillac Alliante'. Just a minor quibble, but as the owner of both a 1977 Fiat 124 Sport Spider and a 2012 500 Abarth, I do like the record to be set as straight as possible.
Sport mode button does not "pop open a valve" in the exhaust. The Record Monza exhaust's flow path is determined by pressure alone (there is a somewhat flimsy resistance spring and valve mechanism that diverts flow when exhaust gasses reach a certain pressure)
Thanks Pete for answering my question about the hard top! Like you, it's not my first choice for "Spiders", but if given one, I wouldn't decline. It would be interesting to see one tuned with a larger turbo or supercharged.🙂
WOW!! That original 124 Spider... Bloody gorgeous or what!? Designed by a human with heart and soul and when wind tunnels were not the forte. @16:27 into the video. When you were passing that pond, the car sounded lovely. Quite a burble to it. :-)) Another well presented and edited video mate. Congrats :-))
Now I'm convinced that I should get one of these because one of your only issues was that your legs were bumping and rubbing against the handbrake, but I have relatively short legs so I should be okay
What an amazing car. This is a car that I have had my eye on but wasn’t too sure but this was an excellent review and has made me love the car even more. I must try and get a test drive in one to satisfy myself. I totally love the look and the colour and would be interesting to see the hardtop when it comes out.
I fully agree. Not everyone would love the cockpit, so one does need to spend a little time behind the wheel to make the final call. Although automatic transmissions are pretty much the norm here in North America, both of my Abarths were standard. I personally believe you need to be working the stick to properly enjoy this car. As for the hard cap, I'm personally not a big fan of the look of it. Plus, I'm not quite sure if the intent is to convert the Spider into a coupe, or if its still a convertible, where the heck do you store the top when it's not on the car?
Nice review, but I own one of these cars and the Sport mode does NOT open the valve in the exhaust. The valve is spring loaded and opens with exhaust pressure only. There is no electrical connection to the valve.
Petrol Ped Happy you didn't say (as others have) that Sport mode firms up the suspension as well ;-) Really enjoyed your review, despite my nit-picking!
Ah, just like them flappy things you see on high stacked truck exhausts in Americaland then! Or are they just to stop birds pooping down yer pipe when you've parked?
Here in Australia, the Record Monza exhaust is optional. I have it on my car, and it is much louder than the standard quad outlet exhaust fitted to the Abarth. I understand the Record Monza is standard fitment in the UK on the Abarth. The valve and it's spring are easy to see by looking underneath the rear of the car. At low revs, with the valve closed, exhaust exits through the rear silencer via the outermost exhaust tips. At higher revs, the valve opens allowing exhaust gas to bypass the silencer and exit via the innermost pair of exhaust tips.
A friend had a mazda a few years back. Great car. Needs another 50hp. Thanks for boot demo with 'big' case. I wonder if they designed it to get two carry-ons vertically in it
The shape is a bit strange (inside of the boot, that is). You have that 8" deep rectangular space in the middle, and then a wider flat area above it. So one point: don't be tempted to order the WeatherTech trunk liner. For $100 CAD you'll get a piece of rubber that fits the inside of the smaller, lower rectangular space. Golf clubs? Two options. Either they ride shotgun in the passenger seat, or, though some forums, owners have said that by removing the plastic/felt liners on the sides of the trunk, they can manage to fit their bag in.
Great video, only one thing.. the exhaust valve is mechanical, not electric, so unaffected by the SPORT mode, apart from the turbo being engaged at much lower revs, hence popping it open earlier..
I've been in the market for one of these and was wondering what type of fuel you put in it. I know the owner manual states that the car should receive premium, but can it take regular. Furthermore, I think the car has a knock sensor which changes the timing of the ignition caused by the difference in the fuel quality. Still, I would like to eliminate knocking altogether to preserve the engine.
What's it like on a road trip? Well, I live in Canada, and we're just a wee bit larger than England. In June, I did a run from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean and back. Six days of 1000km eastbound, four days rest, and then six days to return home. 12,000km in a couple of weeks. Totally enjoyable, great fuel economy, and lots of interesting conversations as the Abarth 124 Spider is pretty rare here still. She's a total joy to own and drive. The only downside? Its not a "chick magnet", it's an older guy magnet. My wife gets no end of amusement from that.
First of your reviews I've seen, and loved it. Great content, and unlike many others, I considered it fair and unbiased. Please forgive me for adding comments to a lot of the replies here, as I've owned one of these for a couple of years and have some insights I think might be of value to potential purchasers.
There is a rally car with about 280-300 bhp, so an up grade to 200 bhp should be on the cards. I like to look, as it does look like to old 124 car it was ment to. Another great video, and goes to show you don't need to spend $$$$$$$ to have something a bit special to drive and to make to smile....
Good video. I have one of these. Reason there is no difference in sound between sport and normal is because the valve isn’t changed by this. It isn’t a controlled valve. It operated using a spring along with the exhaust pressure it’s supposed to open up in higher revs. I love mine and have done loads of miles. I get 40mpg so must drive slower than you!
Wehey! Thanks for answering my question Mr Ped! I’d love for you to review the 308GTi 270 by Peugeot Sport, I only got a 15 minute test drive which just isn’t enough, and is a car on my shortlist for next year (hopefully) along with this little Abarth Spider (hence my road trip question). You’ve already covered the 3rd car on my shortlist, so...get the quick Pug on the channel too man! I’d be keen to hear your views on it over a few days of testing :) Keep the great videos coming :)
Test drove one when they first came out, boot too small I think it was smaller than this car, Abarth was rare, got cooper coupe s which I love. Great review.
Great review - haven't found the heated mirrors on ours though? Thought the heritage look was going to be over the top but love it now. Much more fun to drive than our old S2000 (but nowhere near as quick)
Exactly Bobby. With the upgrade package, you get the heated mirrors, rains sensing wipers, the auto-darkening mirror with garage door controls, plus a pile of other features. The strange thing for those of us in Canada and the US, is that unlike Europe where Abarth's are sold through Abarth dealerships, in North American it's just another trim line under the Fiat brand... Classico, Lusso, Abarth. And, unlike the 500 Abarths that were manufactured in Mexico, our North American Abarths are stripped of a lot of the Abarth branding. No Abarth steering wheel, no Abarth fender badges, no Abarth logo on the centre console lid, no Abarth cover on the engine, no Abarth name of the seat backs... I'm spent a lot of money purchasing components from Europe to bring my North American Abarth up to the same spec as it's cousins across the pond.
Really excellent review Peter. 👍👍👍 I’ve watched a few of your reviews now and I like your honesty and affable style of presentation. Unlike so many presenters who just fire statistics and bland facts at you, and do so in a supercilious manner... you come across like a trusted friend who’s very pleased to share his enthusiastic approval for a special car, or his sage, cautionary advice regarding one that’s perhaps not as good as one might have expected. Look forward to enjoying more of your content. SUBSCRIBED. 😊👍 ~ Louis C.
Wow Louis, that is kind of you to say. That is just the style I am trying to produce so it's great to hear that feedback. Thanks for the Sub and welcome to the channel :-)
I find your reviews really honest. I wanted to start such a channel myself to be honest. Not so easy to do that in Greece. Anyhow, funnily enough I prefer this Fiat to the latest Miata
Great video Pete! You looked like you had fun, despite it being a small car for you! I prefer the shorter overhangs of the MX- 5 and i'd personally wait for the 2019 RF model on dark BBS wheels that will feature the updated 2.0 unit making 184hp - I heard several people say that the power dies off past 5000rpm on the Abarth 124, so I'd prefer the broader powerband that you get from the naturally aspirated higher revving Mazda. There are decent specialists like BBR that have a 200hp powerkit, so in a body that weighs sub 1100kg, that should be very fun!
The Abarth doesn't quite rev out like you expect. I really liked the MX5 RF, but again the one I drove needed more power and wasn't big enough for me to be comfortable. Tuners will I'm sure eek more power from both the MX5 and the 124 :-)
Fiat/Abarth is currently working on replacing this cars 1.4 FIRE engine with an all new 1.3 all aluminium engine. The Abarth version will produce +10hp(180) and +30nm(280). Should improve the performance quite a bit :)
Having had a 70's 124 in my youth I always take notice when I see these on the road. Discontinued now for a couple years in the US nice ones are still around $20k. I realy like the trans AND the top being manual but I think 1.4L is just too small and they should have put something closer to 2.0L under the hood even if a NA (I know, Fiat had to use the 1.4 already in their inventory). I'll have to hit up Turo to see if there's one in my area to try for a day.
A great review as always and a funky little roadster! I wish they would have flaps either side of the Hood when it’s down I dislike the big holes it leaves (Mx5 is the same) and I really do worry about the longevity of these small high performing little engines! How was the exhaust for drone on the Motorways? Not for me but good to see Fiat making quality cars again
Another great review Pete! I've said it before - your my favourite car reviewer (alongside Matt from Carwow)! I only wish you had more frequent reviews. Would love to see a review on the UP GTI if you manage to get your hands on one, as considering it as 2nd car runaround vs a Mini. Anyway…. Keep up the good work buddy!
I was in my local dealer today trying to get hold of an Up GTi. It's not going to be easy, I'll have to go in at brand level :-) It is a constant effort to keep trying to get cars. I'd love to do more.
Pete, I am coveting this car and plan on having one in the near future. I had a '71 MG Midget in the 80s which was a fun car to drive in my 20s. Thanks for the great review. I'm a slim 6' tall. I'm curious to your height for comfort comparison.
Hi James. I am 6'3" but much of my height is in my legs with a 34" inside leg. That gives me a challenge in this car as there isn't quite the leg room I need to be comfortable :-(
First again Really honest answers to so many questions Peter. I must admit I did research the original colours, so I may have jumped on that a bit too quickly. The hardtop GT version has a very nice look to it, but I was surprised at how easy & fast it was to operate the soft top roof. Overall I have definitely warmed to it. The motor in Sport Mode reminded me of the twin cams, really nice growl. Would I swap Corky my JCW Coupe for one ? Sorry, but no. Thanks yet again for an honest and excellent real world review. Cheers Geof
Everytime I see this car it’s growing on me.Does look like a MX-5 to me mate.Peace of pish to open and close the roof mate 😆 Would you say it’s all show and no go Pete?
Correct, speed does not matter, driver engagement does. Sure, speed is fun, and it happens, but to me, it's the engagement and act of driving and what the car says to me when I give my input. A fast, lifeless car is no where near as fun as a slow, communicative car, like a BRZ. The best example of a fast engaging car I can think of is an air-cooled 911 or R34 Skyline GT-R. But for ppl with spending limits, a BRZ/86, MX-5/124 is a good place to start.
Depends really: 1.) Fuel consumption: There are a lot of guys claiming they are achieving around 7 litres/100km (33.6 mpg). I drive the car fast and I average about 10 litres/100km (23.5 mpg). The fuel tank is very small (about 36 litres/9.5 gallons), so you will have to stop about every 350 to 420 km / 217 to 260 miles. 2.) Maintenance is cheap for a sports car. First inspection was around 350 EUR incl. tax. Second inspection about the same. Tax and insurance cost are pretty low in my country. However, it is very tempting to buy expensive tuning parts, to improve the car more. More cooling for the engine, gearbox, a better intercooler, reinforcement struts for the underbody to make the car stiffer, a new suspension with a new setup, maybe some rust protection, a new airfilter box made from carbon fibre, new ECU mapping,... Surprisingly there are a lot of aftermarket parts for this car available, despite of beeing produced in such small numbers. Nethertheless it is hard to get support or a mechanic that knows what he is doing.
Great, thorough review, thanks Pete. I think I'd have one of these over the Mazda, it just looks better, in my opinion. Mind you, if those cup holders are as useless as they look I'd have to give the car a miss. Cup holders are a deal breaker for this coffee addict.
Spot on Bobby. That's where mine sits. But also as Pete mentioned, they aren't the best for actually holding a drink and taller coffee cups do have a tendency to topple out. They are kind of wobbly. I'm looking for an after-market holder that has a better "grip" to it.
Bought 124 spider with 6 speed manual tranny...cant for the life of me imagine an automatic in such a great little sports car. The shifting experience is most of the fun involved in a two seater. Does it come with an optional luggage rack ala "Route 66" style of traveling?
Hmm, now I'm recalling that Renault deliberately spelled the '96 Renault Sport Spider "Spider", instead of Spyder, because they wanted people to pronounce it Speeder. (which is just how French folks will pronounce that spelling) Teehee! Malarkey!! I love it! :¬D
At 16:33 I thought the signpost read Pedworth for a minute! That would have been cool! Always had a soft spot for Italian cars of all kinds, apart from the obvious exotics. That said, I've only ever owned one, an Alfa GT (sadly not the V6 - finances wouldn't run to that at the time). There is something about the feel and obvious passion Italian's have for cars, that shines through. Mine wasn't perfect over the three years I had it, but wasn't a disaster story either. Weak point mechanically seemed to be suspension bushes which it ate at regular intervals (and meant a whole new front wishbone assembly), but gearbox and engine; no problems at all. In fact, it had the most mechanical, lovely 'change of any car I've owned. The interior was an absolute delight, with tan leather and black door cappings etc and an exposed chrome gear lever with a round knob a-la-Ferrari (or so you could dream!) The service side of things was the real downer for me. Alfa dealers were pretty notorious at the time (hopefully rectified). I digress. The Abarth looks a lot of fun, just wonder if around the £30k plus mark you aren't getting into the price of something better? In that sense, maybe a cheaper Fiat version (albeit 30hp down) wouldn't be similar fun at a more justifiable non 'man-maths'(!) price. Unless of course the Abarth is night and day to drive versus the Fiat version. Lovely video btw Pete. Very English countryside - rolling hills, green fields, B roads, pretty little villages, country pubs. Gorgeous!
Petrol Ped Probably should Pete! Italians seem to do both ends of the spectrum well - cheap ‘n’ cheerful or the exotics, made mostly from unobtainium! We’ve had a few Fiats as rentals on holiday, especially 500s, Puntos etc and they’ve all been fun to drive. Not necessarily best-in-class by any means, but for a car nut like me, hugely enjoyable none-the-less. You can tell enthusiasts were involved in their creation.
Don't be afraid to try out the Fiat 124 Spider. I own one, and believe me, it's not slow. In actual fact it's amazing fun, but at the same time a decent every day car. I picked up a pre reg delivery mileage lusso for £17500.
That's a decent saving - around £7k. At that money it really does make sense. I think you bagged a bargain there and perfect for our current weather too! Looking at the configurator and comparing price, Lusso spec would probably be the one I would go for. One up from base and so a decent spec, without going crazy on the price. They all have the same motor, so there's little to be gained by paying more. Once your into the upper 20s - 30k, there's so much choice of fun stuff with much more power (and cylinders!) that it's harder to justify I would suggest. Continue to enjoy your Spider!
I guess you could always buy the chrome boot lid luggage rack, and strap it on there. Now that would look nice. lol But at least if you got caught in the rain, you wouldn't end up with an interior car wash and looking like a drowned rat. :-)
Yes. All new all aluminium engine(FCA GSE(Global Small Engine)/Firefly). It will add 10hp and 30nm. Max torque(280) is available at 1850rpm compared to the current engine's 250nm at 2500rpm.
Heine, that's only going from 170 to 180 HP. Not a great leap. But, at least here in North America, for an investment of $3000 you can add some upgrades and custom tuning to take them 60 HP over stock configuration. I suspect their are folks in the UK who offer the same kinds of upgrades and services. One thing I would mention is that since it's based on the Miata chassis, you can purchase Miata hood lift kits that allow you to get rid of the bonnet prop rod. Two bonuses with that... aside with the obvious bit of getting rid of the prop rod completely, it also opens up about a foot higher so your mechanics will love you, and they use existing bolts and bolt hole locations, so no drilling to do the install.. I think it took me about 20 minutes to install them on my vehicle.
@@PetrolPed Actually some cars I really like, I dont fit in them. I sat in a Toyota GT86 and what a struggle to get in and even worse to get out. Lol. Mazda mx5 has even less room than the 124 even sharing the same chassis. Cheers bud
@@jswish777 If in a lhd car you will fit. If in a rhd, you will not for sure. But if you do fit, it will be hard to drive it. I am a car detailer/valeter and a few days ago I had to move around the latest Mazda mx5. I was tight in it and my head passes the top. I had to have my head tilted to the side. But if I had to drive it, I could so it would probably be the same with the Abarth 124
Awesome video is there absolutely any way you can share the name and the artist of the first intro song that you played please I am really care who that is
Nice review. Been waiting ages for this. Never owned a convertible before, but do you have to shout in others too when the top down? Noticed you were having to shout when driving. Edit: How's the tech/infotainment? I would suspect it's fairly intuitive and responsive?
I do raise my voice when filming but that is just so the mic picks things up clearly. The wind noise at motorway speed isn't too bad and you can talk the your passenger :-) Sat Nav and radio are all pretty good and easy to use.
It's the stock infotainment system that's used in the Mazda vehicles, which is a shame. The reason i say that is for a multitude of reasons. Support for upgrades to content (like nav data) is challenging, and the system itself has serious memory management issues. The system runs on Linux, and the older versions are hackable so you can do things like add custom boot screens, extra features, etc. Android Auto isn't available yet, though they keep promising "soon". That said, it wasn't a game changer for me. The Nav and XM Radio work well enough, and I can always plug in a USB stick for my own music mix if I choose to do so. One quirky feature if you happen to also like to listen to audio books on long drives, you can't just plug in a stick loaded with .mp3s of audio books. You have to go to an audio settings screen and change the input from music to audio books.
Hello, thank you for your review. I did notice you said it was a little tight in the headroom and Ray Brock brought it up in the comments as well. The car is just a bit small for the likes of you so may I ask, how tall is the likes of you?
Did you go to Nottingham or did you go to Donington Park? Or perhaps both? Because Donington Park is in Castle Donington, North West Leicestershire and not in Nottingham.
Great review , cheers . I traded in mx5 NC on a sunny afternoon whim, without reading any reviews...! If any of my mates had done that I’d call them a plonker. Great decision 👍
Great review, you put a lot of work into producing this for us and that hasn't gone unnoticed by all, im sure.
Thanks Robert, hard work but great fun :-)
Right, as an owner of one of these. For all of you who slate this.... Having a green eyed monster is such a shame 😞. Just a few more points not mentioned in this review. Most fun car in my garage. The expensive stuff comes and goes but this will never leave my collection.
I have the lusso version which I adore. a little less power but a better every day car to live with. So so much fun
Hey I’m picking up my 2018 Abarth 24 Spider this Wednesday. Only done 14,000 miles. I simply can’t wait. Never had a two seater before. And it seems the right time now I’ve reached 60 🤣
Nice. Enjoy.
Speed really isn't important, its all about the journey ;) not too shabby.
Many rally focussed cars in 60s and 70s had Matt black bonnets to reduce glare , and white gloss roofs to reflect sunshine / heat .
Love the review, can't wait for a 2019+ ND2 review.
I love the color. I really like the red/black variation. Very cool car!
Lancia also had a matt Black Bonnet for their Rally Car's to stop the Sun being reflected into driver's eyes.
And that’s effectively the only reason why they made it in matt black. Apparently not a lot of people know it had this real purpose!
Cool. Wish there was a run somewhere in the southeast USA. I would definitely be interested in taking my Spidey.
Black bonnet/heritage colors are a 1500$ optional in Canada. I passed but am quite happy with my regular red 124 Abarth.
Ouch !
Similar stateside. They all arrive in North America without the stripe, and if you want it added, it's done in a shop before the vehicle ships to the dealer. I believe it's a $1000 USD touch stateside. Personally, I passed on it because I'm just not all that keen on the look, and given that my Abarth is black to begin with, well, why add a matt black hood and trunk? lol
That's not to mention you can have it vinyl wrapped for about a third of the dealer price...
Exactly right. perfectly illustrated driving east or west on the M.4 at sunrise and sunset !
I don't have the Abarth Spider but still enjoy it just as much. Definitely a "weekend car" !
A well deserved thumbs-up as per usual.
Cheers Mate :-)
Really good review. I’m sure they will get some sales on the back of this. Looks like a lot of fun with a nice soundtrack 👍
A good summary :-)
I enjoyed this video so much I went out and bought an Abarth 124 spider!
That’s awesome 😮😎
Great review on a Fab car. I've had and raced many MX5s and now have a 124 Spider. Being a Turbo it responds well to an ECU tune. And that makes it awesome on the road.. I have a track day booked in the end of the month, can't wait. Have a Fab weekend
I know I am coming at this a bit late, but the original 124 spider was produced until 1985.5. After Fiat stopped production in 1981, it became the "Pininfarina Azzura" until the coachbuilder needed the space to produce the Cadillac Alliante'. Hey Pete, this video has just given me a great idea for my wifes next birthday present - mainly for me of course
Now that is a good idea...beats face cream ;-)
Sport mode button does not "pop open a valve" in the exhaust. The Record Monza exhaust's flow path is determined by pressure alone (there is a somewhat flimsy resistance spring and valve mechanism that diverts flow when exhaust gasses reach a certain pressure)
That’s a great car for the summer around the twisty lanes🏁👍👍
Yep, defo !
Thanks Pete for answering my question about the hard top! Like you, it's not my first choice for "Spiders", but if given one, I wouldn't decline. It would be interesting to see one tuned with a larger turbo or supercharged.🙂
I would imagine 200bhp is doable !
You really are belting these reviews pal. Yet another great piece of editing. Cool.
This is what I can do when I have a car for long enough :-)
Thinking of getting one of these second hand at a fca aution not sure of what colour yet. You might of convinced me. Thanks for sharing
A great drivers car 👌
Excellent review! Pretty much touched on all bases and answered a lot of questions for me, well done 👍🏻
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it :-)
WOW!! That original 124 Spider... Bloody gorgeous or what!? Designed by a human with heart and soul and when wind tunnels were not the forte.
@16:27 into the video. When you were passing that pond, the car sounded lovely. Quite a burble to it. :-))
Another well presented and edited video mate. Congrats :-))
The nice thing is it burbles at low speed :-)
PP - Sounded a really nice burble too. Like 1/2 of a V8!!
It is certainly a car to drive before you make your mind up on it :-)
Petrol Ped excellent, will have to get on to that 😉👍🏻
I fully agree. Not everyone would love the cockpit, so one does need to spend a little time behind the wheel to make the final call. Although automatic transmissions are pretty much the norm here in North America, both of my Abarths were standard. I personally believe you need to be working the stick to properly enjoy this car. Excellent content! Such good production and quality.
Thank you. Feedback like that means a lot 👍
Great format and review. More like these please
I will when I get cars for long enough :-)
Great review again, thanks for answering my question on headroom! It says 20K subs now!! Well Done. Surprised that did not get a mention :-)
Yep, hit 20k last week :-)
Not sure why I didn't mention it :-(
Nice review, but I own one of these cars and the Sport mode does NOT open the valve in the exhaust. The valve is spring loaded and opens with exhaust pressure only. There is no electrical connection to the valve.
Thanks for this. Always happy to be corrected. I was working off duff information ;-)
I've just checked again on the configurator and the Monza Record exhaust is standard not an option ?!
A friend had a mazda a few years back. Great car. Needs another 50hp. Thanks for boot demo with 'big' case. I wonder if they designed it to get two carry-ons vertically in it
Not sure but you've certainly got space for a weekend away :-)
You can purchase a luggage set made just for the car
My bad. I found this out after I filmed the review 😢
Another top notch vid Pete, I had my mind set on the MX5 now I’m not too sure following your review? Keep the videos coming in, it’s appreciated
This might be more money but for me has a lot more character. The MX5 is still an awesome car though :-)
Great comment. Thank you :-)
It is most definitely a elderly man magnet..unfortunately..don’t understand it but very true. 😂
You are using it wrong. I get a lot of attention from women in this car. But I dont try hard. ;-)
great honest review as always , best car reviewer on utube by a big margin
Cheers Gary. That's kind of you to say so :-)
First of your reviews I've seen, and loved it. Great content, and unlike many others, I considered it fair and unbiased. Please forgive me for adding comments to a lot of the replies here, as I've owned one of these for a couple of years and have some insights I think might be of value to potential purchasers.
Hi there. Glad you enjoyed it. Write as many comments as you like. Great to see you get stuck in 👍
Cracking review Pete. Really like this little car!!!
Cheers Chris
Great honest review 👍🏻
Cheers Scott :-)
There is a rally car with about 280-300 bhp, so an up grade to 200 bhp should be on the cards.
I like to look, as it does look like to old 124 car it was ment to.
Another great video, and goes to show you don't need to spend $$$$$$$ to have something a bit special to drive and to make to smile....
Gavin Ivers There may soon be a GT4 car with 350+ bhp. Hopefully they'll make a road going version with the same 1.75l engine from the 4C
The Rallye Car has a total different engine.
Just watching a WD repeat of Ant working on a 1972 FIAT 124 Spider.
Love a bit of Wheeler Dealers. If only it was Ant that did the work 😜😬
Right on
I’d be keen to hear your views on it over a few days of testing :)
Keep the great videos coming :)
It's on my list :-)
I do like these. Still wouldn't swap the GP2 for one though. 😁
Err...no chance !
Test drove one when they first came out, boot too small I think it was smaller than this car, Abarth was rare, got cooper coupe s which I love. Great review.
I've got a Roadster JCW...HUGE boot 👍
Brilliant review mate. If I was ordering one that colour compo you have is perfect. Cool car. 👍👌
Wasn't sure to start but it really grew on me and it would also be the colour combo I would choose :-)
Well that was impressive 0-60-0 in under ten seconds and that noise noise🤤
Fun to do !
Omg, ty for the review but your outfit really gets the Fashion Police on tilt.
I stopped caring what the Fashion Police think a long time ago 😂
Great review - haven't found the heated mirrors on ours though? Thought the heritage look was going to be over the top but love it now. Much more fun to drive than our old S2000 (but nowhere near as quick)
Loved my S2000 👌
In USA it's part of the convenience package not standard
Many thanks Peter. I stumbled upon your channel quite by chance. “Stumbling” is usually a bad thing to do, but in this case, I’m very glad I did. 😊👌
I find your reviews really honest. I wanted to start such a channel myself to be honest. Not so easy to do that in Greece. Anyhow, funnily enough I prefer this Fiat to the latest Miata
Thanks. It's great fun to do but it's tough to start with and getting cars is really hard. Best of luck if you give it a go :-)
@@PetrolPed Cheers mate. Keep up the great work yourself.
You have great mountain roads and scenery nearby. :) What is preventing you from making videos? :)
Can't wait for the 184hp variant of the MX-5, with brembo wheels and bilstein suspension!
The Abarth doesn't quite rev out like you expect. I really liked the MX5 RF, but again the one I drove needed more power and wasn't big enough for me to be comfortable.
Tuners will I'm sure eek more power from both the MX5 and the 124 :-)
My 124 has been tuned to be approx 200bhp it's also capable of revving to 7k!
+Jay Tee Sounds great, i'm sure its really fast! I wonder how the throttle response and power curve compares with a BBR tuned 2.0 MX5 with 200hp...
smilepermile they will be very close but the abarth will arguably look and sound better 🎶
Fiat/Abarth is currently working on replacing this cars 1.4 FIRE engine with an all new 1.3 all aluminium engine. The Abarth version will produce +10hp(180) and +30nm(280). Should improve the performance quite a bit :)
Heine Pedersen you don’t invest money to build a new engine to get extra 10bhp.
0:32 my favourite part of my route to Goodwood
What did you think of the car Adam ?
It was great fun, I really enjoyed it.
However I think that I used all of the car and don't feel it has any more to give.
Really good review well done!
Thanks 🙏🏻
Having had a 70's 124 in my youth I always take notice when I see these on the road. Discontinued now for a couple years in the US nice ones are still around $20k. I realy like the trans AND the top being manual but I think 1.4L is just too small and they should have put something closer to 2.0L under the hood even if a NA (I know, Fiat had to use the 1.4 already in their inventory). I'll have to hit up Turo to see if there's one in my area to try for a day.
Don’t be put off by the small motor. They drive brilliantly 👌
Great job on this review. Thanks!
My pleasure. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Good review thank you. There are more Nm available in the Abarth (250) than there is in MX5 (Gt - 205) therefore overtaking shouldn't be a problem.
Not too bad :-)
Sweet review.. I bought one it’s awesome 👏🏽
Cheers Paul 👍
Think l would take a low k 2nd hand boxster, cars just at entirely another lvl. Each to their own, but would be a no brainer 2me
Announce in Abarth Day today in Rockingham. Hard top is now available as an accessory.....£2300
Ouch 😳
Good review. Enjoyed it very much
Cheers Shane. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Another great review Pete!
It's not going to be easy, I'll have to go in at brand level :-)
It is a constant effort to keep trying to get cars. I'd love to do more.
I know I'm late to the party but perhaps the 124 would be a little quicker with the hood up?
Less drag on the motorway for sure 👍
Pete, I am coveting this car and plan on having one in the near future. I had a '71 MG Midget in the 80s which was a fun car to drive in my 20s. Thanks for the great review.
I'm a slim 6' tall. I'm curious to your height for comfort comparison.
Hi James. I am 6'3" but much of my height is in my legs with a 34" inside leg. That gives me a challenge in this car as there isn't quite the leg room I need to be comfortable :-(
@@PetrolPed Thanks for the speedy reply!
I guess a couple test drives will let me know.
I'm hitting 'subscribe'.
AWESOME !
Welcome to the channel :-)
I reply to every comment posted and love the banter with you guys :-)
First again
Really honest answers to so many questions Peter.
Cheers
Geof
Cheers Geof. The reason for the colour scheme makes it very cool, you'd just have to explain it to people a lot :-)
Everytime I see this car it’s growing on me.Does look like a MX-5 to me mate.Peace of pish to open and close the roof mate 😆 Would you say it’s all show and no go Pete?
That would be a bit harsh. It's more about driving feel and experience than outright pace :-)
Petrol Ped I suppose the figures aren’t that bad really for a lite car 😉🍻
I like this car... a lot! the specs on paper look like cr*p but in the real world it's a little trackmonster with amazing sound, looks and performance
Exactly 👍
I like very much this review, professional and accurated👍
Thanks 👍
Correct, speed does not matter, driver engagement does. Sure, speed is fun, and it happens, but to me, it's the engagement and act of driving and what the car says to me when I give my input. A fast, lifeless car is no where near as fun as a slow, communicative car, like a BRZ.
The best example of a fast engaging car I can think of is an air-cooled 911 or R34 Skyline GT-R. But for ppl with spending limits, a BRZ/86, MX-5/124 is a good place to start.
Yep, I agree 👍
The original 124 Spider was made until 1985. Last two years you could have a supercharger!
(Pininfarina Spidereuropa Volumex)
I wonder how it will hold up? What about the fuel consumption/ownership costs?
Depends really:
1.) Fuel consumption: There are a lot of guys claiming they are achieving around 7 litres/100km (33.6 mpg).
How can the scorpion be a spider ?
You can forget this car is you are taller than 6"2, that also goes for the Miata nD
It is pretty tight for the taller driver 👍
@Zsolt Papp, thanx for that. I was reading the comments to see if Pete shared with someone how tall he was. But you covered what I needed to know.
Nice Luton taxi! Iam getting old.....lol
Great, thorough review, thanks Pete. I think I'd have one of these over the Mazda, it just looks better, in my opinion. Mind you, if those cup holders are as useless as they look I'd have to give the car a miss. Cup holders are a deal breaker for this coffee addict.
Cup holders were not great. Brake hard and drinks fall out 😳
You can move the passenger side cupholder to the front
Spot on Bobby. That's where mine sits. But also as Pete mentioned, they aren't the best for actually holding a drink and taller coffee cups do have a tendency to topple out. They are kind of wobbly. I'm looking for an after-market holder that has a better "grip" to it.
Is the rear window glass or plastic Thank you.
Bought 124 spider with 6 speed manual tranny...cant for the life of me imagine an automatic in such a great little sports car. The shifting experience is most of the fun involved in a two seater. Does it come with an optional luggage rack ala "Route 66" style of traveling?
I'm not sure if Abarth or Fiat do one but I bet you can get an after market one 🤔
@@PetrolPed thanks!!...
Hah! I love the clever way you carefully skirted around MY question. X¬D
It was the wrong Spider to go all Mrs Robinson ;-)
Petrol Ped
Facepalm! Watch your spelling Pedro! Spyder please! ;-)
Wait! Abarth are actually spelling it Spider!?
Hmm, now I'm recalling that Renault deliberately spelled the '96 Renault Sport Spider "Spider", instead of Spyder, because they wanted people to pronounce it Speeder. (which is just how French folks will pronounce that spelling) Teehee! Malarkey!! I love it! :¬D
Do all Abarth 124 Spiders come with the Monza exhaust in the UK or is it an option? Thanks
Awesome review..thank you
Glad you enjoyed it Terry 👍
Great review
Thank you 🙏
Excellent!!!!
Hi. Fun review. For reference on fit. How tall are you?
Cheers. 6'3" with a 34" inside leg 👍
@@PetrolPed Thank you. Much appreciated.
My neighbours will go nuts on me with the loud exhaust noise leaving home at 4:30 every morning 😂
Yep 😂😂
Gorgeous!
I’ve never owned and Italian car and something deep inside me says I should one day. Mrs PPs first car was an Alfa GTV6 😳
I'm just wondering when the GT comes out, where would you store the roof?
I think it's out now. You have to store the hard top at home I guess !
I guess you could always buy the chrome boot lid luggage rack, and strap it on there. Now that would look nice. lol But at least if you got caught in the rain, you wouldn't end up with an interior car wash and looking like a drowned rat. :-)
Its a classic hard top. You have to store it somewhere at home. But you will still have your softtop. So you wouldnt get wet If it starts to rain.
Cool review. Was wondering.....if you just drive it sedately is it comfortable or will it dislodge my false teeth!
Nope. It has a pretty good ride. No crashy at all 👍
@@PetrolPed thank you kind sir, and keep up the great work.
A Brompton bike should fit in there nicely 👍
I would have thought so 👍
Petrol Ped Yes Sir a genuine British biking Icon to complement the 124 .
Do you think Fiat or FCA will throw in more power to the 124 spider abarth to be more competitive with the added power in the 2019 Mazda MX5?
Maybe. If they don't I'm sure plenty of tuners will, if they don't already !
Nice video and honest review. I love this car. Just cant fit properly in it. I am 6,3ft. It is a sesacional car.
Same issue here 😥
@@PetrolPed Actually some cars I really like, I dont fit in them. I sat in a Toyota GT86 and what a struggle to get in and even worse to get out. Lol. Mazda mx5 has even less room than the 124 even sharing the same chassis.
Cheers bud
Im around 6’1 (185cm) and hoping this fits...
Awesome video is there absolutely any way you can share the name and the artist of the first intro song that you played please I am really care who that is
I'll need to go back and look at my archive. I do my best !
come clean (slct remix)
Italian cars make it not so bad to be short.😊
Nice review. Been waiting ages for this. Never owned a convertible before, but do you have to shout in others too when the top down? Noticed you were having to shout when driving.
Edit: How's the tech/infotainment? I would suspect it's fairly intuitive and responsive?
I do raise my voice when filming but that is just so the mic picks things up clearly. The wind noise at motorway speed isn't too bad and you can talk the your passenger :-)
Sat Nav and radio are all pretty good and easy to use.
Depends how fast you are going. In city speed limits you dont have to rise your voice at all. At around 100kph / 60 mph the wind gets really loud.
Hello, thank you for your review. I did notice you said it was a little tight in the headroom and Ray Brock brought it up in the comments as well. The car is just a bit small for the likes of you so may I ask, how tall is the likes of you?
I am 6’3” but my height is in my legs. 34” inside leg 👍
Did you go to Nottingham or did you go to Donington Park? Or perhaps both? Because Donington Park is in Castle Donington, North West Leicestershire and not in Nottingham.
I am from Nottingham. I went to both. Well nearly. Stayed with my mum in Keyworth and went to Donnington Park 👍
@@PetrolPed Thanks. I enjoyed the review
