This video came just in time! Just got hired to mix a hip hop track for the first time and I've been losing sleep over how to fit in a fat kick/808. This is a great starting point.
Hi Friend, mixing Low End can vary from one genre to another quite greatly! Programmed Drums whether they are virtual like Addictive Drums, Trigger or Easy Drummer are not like live drums who have enormous dynamics and performances different. This video features the techniques of two R&B, POP, EDM, & HIP HOP producers/engineers/mixers: • Mr. Ariel Chobaz (Nicki Minaj, Drake, Rihanna, Eminem, NAS) • And our good friend, Mr. Grammy Winner, Bob Horn! They’re going to show you how they mix kick and bass in Hip Hop! Please let me know your experiences mixing Low End in Hip Hop! Have a marvellous time mixing!
I really like Bob's explanations! I wish you could make a video mixing electronic music (lots and lots of virtual instruments with huge sounds mixed together).
I'm new to this and genuinely can't figure out what Ariel is doing when he duplicates the kick over and over. It looks like he's got the same kick playing on 4 tracks with each one just being tweaked a bit more than the first, but I feel like that can't be right. Btw, sorry I don't have an answer to your question
@Ctephan copy that, thanks for the reply. so when we see Ariel initially tweak the dynamics of his kick, is it accurate to say that those adjustments aren’t applied to the next track with compression/eq?
Warren that is a fantastic kick. Mind sharing where to find such fat and impactful kicks? The libraries i happen upon are lacking in that prowess “shake the car” factor. Cheers!
Hi Warren ! Greetings from Quebec City, Canada ! I truly enjoy all of your videos, very informative and helpful. My question here is : is there any special tricks to mix STEREO bass ? A lot of synth basses are in stereo but I find it problematic to fit them in a mix or have them stable enough. Any tricks of yours to mix stereo synth bass ? Thanks !! Mathieu
WOW! I'm your first Like here! :D Thx for the lo-down, Warren! Chobaz said, "You just wanna get a good sound." What's "good"? Is it just the one(s) from my reference mix(es)? Can you tell I'm not trusting my ears yet? :D
yeah great tips, but did the first engineer forgot to gain stage the mix, i don't know i might be wrong. by the way this channel is my favorite channel.
WOW "printed hot" was an understatement. looks like someone bounced it out at 0db clipping like crazy.. did he just mess with the view of the regions?? or did someone really send him compresses /limited stems?
Hi Nathan, haha that's the WaveForm View exaggerated! I have seen sessions from people with some of the WaveForms completely squared off like that though, not a whole song! Haha
I agree, plus the Waves API 2500 sounds awful clipped from 2.49 onward ... at least from my experience anyway. And it sounds wrong here too. Where is he going with the Threshold ... yowzas. Or is just a "digitally clipped sound" for the click on kicks that I don't dig?
Why compressing an already limited kick ? If you don't want it to clip, just lower the volume, it's already overly compressed/limited (even if the built-in limiter in the Rcomp has a sound on its own). And is it me or the producer weren't doing their job properly on those examples ? I mean, having 3 kick layers (high/mid/low or low/high/sub or even Sub/high/sat) is something that is pretty common among dance producers. Same with the Bob Horn part were the guy just send a kick without any low/sub informations (maybe that was what he was after ?). Anyway, the Bob Horn C6 sidechained release and phase aligment tips are good reminder :).
so Ariel basically duplicates tracks so he can adjust certain frequencies with eq and compression ? sounds like kick needs some glue compression when sidechain compressing the 808
Warren, your tutorials are like Listerine. You hate it but use it twice a day! And as much as I did hate this video there is valuable information required to perform work that I can not afford to turn down. My only concern is these mixers have every fancy Plug-in ever made at their disposal and because they have a name, they probably get them for free. What about all the other folks that are struggling to come up in the business? Do they get the same shot?
the part were Ariel was tuning the kick to the key of the song. how to do and know the exact frequencies needed to be boosted...?someone help #2023 we still here @producelikeapro

Would you suggest splitting your kick in to 3 tracks like Ariel demonstrated on any/every song that's heavy in the low end (e.g. trap/hip-hop)

Incredible video thank you!
Would RBass come before compression on the bass drum for a hip-hop track or after compression? And why?
That was cool :) Cheers man!!
Thanks ever so much Jonas!
Knowledge 💯

Is it ok that Ariel's tracks (kick and bass) are clipping so much?
thank u:)
Not gonna lie, I was pretty skeptic about the premise of 3 white dudes mixing hip hop but the video was great.
Chobaz ain’t white
BWUUM. BWUUM. BWAM-BWAM-BWUUM.

Bob Horn should take a little care of his health.
