  • Over the last few decades, camcorders became a part of almost every household. However, even in the age of 1080p and 4K video cameras, smartphones have taken over most of thebvg market of casual shoppers looking for a camcorder to preserve their memories in motion. In this video, we'll be exploring a decent camcorder, the Sony HDR-CX260, a camcorder that can record in 1080p and 60fps. Will this camera still be worth buying in 2018, or will camcorders go straight to the bargain bin? Will iPhones, Galaxies, and other smartphones reign supreme? Let's find out!
*at 8:47, the caption should read HDR-CX260

9:22 if they can record longer than a certain length of time, they get taxed as video cameras.
Back in 2006, the EU controversially decided to classify high-end digital cameras as video recorders, which attached a customs duty of 5-12% for digital cameras imported into Europe. The classification was decided not just based on digital cameras' improving abilities to record video through its lens and sensor, but their ability to record direct input from external sources like televisions. A home video recorder tax would theoretically offset money lost from users recording movies off broadcast television or cable onto digital devices, though the EU has never been very clear on the tax's intent. The tax's consequence, though, has been felt in every digital camera user looking to use a DSLR in place of a camcorder, as camera manufactures would rather limit recording capability in software than raise the price of its cameras (or lower their margins).

    Camcorder hands down.
Optical Image stabilization, color accuracy and better lense. (and has better built in mic too, let alone ability to add external microphone, lights, etc).
Chasing after babies, pets, concerts or sport event will show you why.
Using DSLR for video shooting has its limitations. The image sensor will be damaged due to prolonged opened sensor while capturing video. DSLR is meant to have an instant burst exposure to the sensor. You'll need a big budget to go through sets of DSLRs. The only benefit is the ability to manually change lense, focal or color settings.

No offense but the Camcorder just destroyed your samsung s7, 4K doesn't mean anything there.
I use a Canon HF R800. And i mean, for the asking 200 dollars, you can do worse.
It has OIS, 1080p@60fps which is all i want/need and that huge zoom is absolutely perfect for macro shots with shallow DOF (which btw, some phones can't even do close ups).
I do believe it is better than most (if not all) smartphones despise having no """4K""". Thanks to the many features it has and especially the zoom (despise the shit quality lens with color fringing).
I do still want to get into Mirrorless or semi-pro camcorders (because of way better low light y shallow DOF) but for the price for 200, is decent

All the videos on my channel were done on my Nexus 5X smartphone. They are ok, but video quality is not too good. The video I did last weekend in low blue light just wasn't what I wanted. Working with my fat fingers and the phone touch screen was always very frustrating. I almost bought a DSLR at about $500, Nikon D3500, when all I really need is a camcorder. Just tonight, I bought a Canon VIXIA HF R800 on sale for $220 US in Florida. Super happy that I went with a camcorder for many of the reason that you mention in the is video. $17 for a card that gives me hours of recording time. I will eventually still get a DSLR, but for now, all I need is a camcorder. Great vid man. And excellent points about pros and cons of camcorders. Thanks!

The time limit on dslr cameras is due to taxes. By limiting it to 29 mins and 59 seconds, companies can avoid having to register it as a video camera which I guess they’d have to pay higher taxes for? Not sure how it works exactly, I just know it’s taxes lol. Certain countries don’t have this restriction and therefore their versions of the camera don’t have the time limits. Great vid btw, tempted to pick up a camcorder just for the heck of it lol

That law no longer exists, so newer cameras can have longer record times. But then you get into issues of overheating, depending on the camera.

Did you try comparing the three cameras (camcorder, SLR and smartphone) in a studio environment and using artificial light? One thing you might want to check out, can you shoot with manual settings using your camcorder? I'm not familiar with you camcorder, but it looks to me like a consumer-grade camcorder that may have some manual settings. You should check the menus on your SLR looking for something like Meter Timer (that's what it is called on my Canon 5D Mark III.) In that menu you should be able to increase the amount of time you can record video on your SLR in the Video Mode. The biggest problem you may face is that you may run out of battery life. If you run into that, AC adapters are available. Realistically, shooting a 30 minute scene for example is way too long but it's nice to have longer time available.

The simple thing is that a "decent" camcorder is actually designed to shoot video with all the relevant controls to hand along with complete control of focus/exposure/sound amongst other things, also they can fit into a pocket and offer good value for money. A conventional SLR type camera was not designed to shoot video and is not comfortable to use hand held for any length of time especially with big lenses, also having no cooling fans they can get overheated in a short time. Smartphones can shoot good video footage and are very handy as most people own and carry them about with them all the time , however to make decent films with them takes a bit more than just hand held "point and shoot" and stick on the internet. The only people that normally produce "decent" videos with a phone probably understand how a conventional camera works and basic film language So yes all three are "capable" of producing a decent video, it's just that a camcorder is easier and better for the job.

  • @keebmarketing

Of course it depends on the use if you are just a one-off camera user or video recorder user then yeah phone is adequate but if you are recording sporting events you know your kitty games and or doing longer videos- the camcorder.
First off if you are recording went outside the temperature will basically have that phone charge decrease dramatically you won't get through the whole game your phone will not have any power.
Second speed and efficiency of use is so much better with a camcorder you turn it on it is ready to record... the where that camcorder will be the where you store it the where you have it was always going to be more ready than a personal phone.
Also the zoom on the camcorder will destroy the attempt that a personal phone will make. Personal phone camera is not designed to do anything intense they and improve it but it's going to have limits.
So it comes down to who is using it and why-if it's average people a phone is fine if it's people who record more than just a one-off moment...camcorder.

I'll take my Sony Handycam any day of the week for shooting video over using a phone. I plan on getting another video camera soon that has higher resolution, just not sure which one to get yet. But the Sony video camera has been fantastic the entire time I've had it- no complaints really. And Sony just seems to make things that are very intuitive and easy to use. From the remote controls for their tvs, and their video cameras as well.

I think consumer camcorders are largely pointless. However, for professional applications, camcorders still have their place. Professional camcorders are well suited for event coverage and news gathering. There are prosumer camcorders that blur the lines, and I could see those having value. The Sony AX700 is one of those prosumer models. It has a 1" type sensor, which falls somewhere between the Handycam and the DSLR.
There are serious drawbacks to a camera like the Nikon D3400, but a lot of those drawbacks have been addressed in newer mirrorless cameras. You can get XLR adapters for professional audio. Many mirrorless cameras now have electronic viewfinders, in-body image stabilization, fully articulating screens, and headphone jacks, unlike the D3400. A camera like the Canon EOS R7 is a much better video tool than the D3400 for reasons beyond the 4K resolution.
Some professional camcorders are cinema cameras with large, DSLR-style sensors and interchangeable lenses. They're really the best of both worlds for shooting video if you don't mind the high costs and the bulk.

There's no way a lens the size of a zit can substitute for a proper video lens on a camcorder. Cellphones take terrible looking video in comparison. I have an S7 edge too and no, it doesn't take 4k video. It's 1920x1080 at its max resolution.

The direction goes to photo camera with video recording ! So you don't need both a camera AND a camcorder anymore ! BUT you alwas need to compare with same price in 4K UHD 24/25/30p and unlimited recording time. The bottleneck for an all in one device is at the moment law and politics. Most cameras are limited to 29 minutes video recording (only the very expensive ones aren't), to not be declared as camcorder which have much higer taxes in EU. Politicians need to change laws imo, because this suppots less energy waiste ressources waiste electronic waiste and space waiste. Why 2 devices (camcorder and camers) if you can have all in one ?
