- Since I bought a new camera recently I thought it was only fair that I say what I think about it, what it's good for and what I'd look out for with my next purchase. I use this video to explain why I got what I did, how it compares with my old one and with a superior product.
I got myself a Panasonic V520, a cheap but very practical little camera that gets the job done, but not as well as a 4K camera would! I'm aware that this whole video sounds like an advert for Panasonic products. I also researched Sony cameras but since I ended up getting a Panasonic one, I thought I'd base the video around the series. To balance it out, I hate the batteries. Every generation requires a new kind of battery and they're all being sold for extortionate amounts. I've gone and bought some cheap ones from Hong Kong but they still haven't arrived. Perhaps they never will.

I give props to Philip just going out to film shoots of him just zooming in on far objects for a five minute video. I believe that this just displays his dedication.
Are any of them waterproof? I'd like to try to record while flushing it down the toilet and afterwards watch the recording of "the mystical adventure throughout our toilet system" or whatever.

I'm so disappointed that there wasn't a clip featured of himself being zoomed - in on from afar.

normally, when you are going professional you don't really zoom while filming (or at any tome to be honest).
that's why with the better ones, the zoom get worse
+kliksphilip He's correct to a point, when taking photos you almost NEVER want to zoom in as you need the picture to be a crispier then a crisp as you lose picture quality when you zoom in. But when filming it is slightly different as zoom can be very usful. But it also depends on what you want to film and take pictures of.
kliksphilip yeah sorry i wasn't specific enough. i was talking about movies (actionmovies etc.) and stuff (and photos like TheChubbCat kindly said) ofc when you are at a festival you have some cameras zooming really good and some tilting etc. through the room without using zoom :)
+kliksphilip It is because the more professional cameras have bigger image sensors. Bigger sensor means better quality, but it also means a shorter equivalent focal length. The WX970 for example has a focal length of 81.6mm compared to the VC270s 103mm, but due to having a sensor more than twice larger, its 35mm equivalent max focal length is only 752mm compared to the VC270s 35mm equivalent max length of 1740mm.
*Also, the zoom ratio of *x doesn't necessarily tell you how far the camera can zoom, it only tells you the length of the zoom area. Some really far zooming DSLR optics for example have a fixed zoom, thus having a ratio of 1x. It's always the 35mm equivalent focal length which tells you how far can the camera optically zoom.
I know I'm a little late, but a lot of cameras have the ability to change between PAL and NTSC, so even if you bought the camera in the UK, you can get 60FPS

I have a Panasonic HC-X920 and usually record 1920x1080 at 25 frames per second.
Panasonic VX870 and Panasonic G7 owner here. The VX870 would have been an excellent purchase choice. I know why you got a cheaper model and you definitely did the right thing by doing so, but since you mentioned wanting the VX870 multiple times I thought you'd like to know it was good. My first camcorder, the Canon R60, was cheaper has a much smaller and noisier sensor, but has a 32x optical zoom and 57x optical + sensor crop zoom; it's disturbing how far a tiny-sensor camcorder can reach sometimes.
You need to get an image of that "No Fowling" sign and use it as a decal for a CS:GO map.
That's what i hate about phone cameras. They're great for taking pictures of anything near you in daylight, but as soon as the lighting changes or you need to zoom they're shit.
I would have just bought a used DSLR body that does 1080p 60fps and then buy a zoomy zoom lens. Being restricted to one lens is shit.

@@SantiagoMonroy5 its a mirrorless but the canon eos m (with magic lantern mod) is about 100 eur, there are a few used lenses for around 100 aswell.
I was actually surprised, while (re)searching for computer parts, by how few awesome options there are, basically regardless of category!
By awesome I mean modern, well made products, which offer everything you want to do with them for the right price.

Recently had the same issue, buying a camera for my year abroad, I found that a lot of the 4K 60 fps cameras looked worse somehow than the 1080p cameras. I ended up getting myself a £300ish travel camera with crazy crazy optical zoom, definitely my favourite feature. It could record in 4K at 60 fps as well.
I know this is an older video but the more expensive cameras may have less zoom because they may have a larger sensor. With a smaller sensor the "crop factor" is higher, which basically means that the image looks more zoomed in than a larger sensor would using the same length lens. The smaller sensor would require a shorter lens to get more zoom, which is probably why they can zoom in more than fancier cameras.
Feel free to correct me, this is just out of memory and may not be 100% accurate :p

The reason the higher end models have less zoom is because they have better optics (ie wider aperture and higher quality glass and better elements). That all adds up to better image quality.

In 2020 iPhones now do 4k 60fps, but the digital zoom is so bad
cheap cameras have better zoom because their sensors are smaller. If you use the same lense for a full frame sensor and a smaller sensor, such as aps-c you will see that the smaller aps-c sensor is more zoomed in because it is capturing less of the shot, essentially cropping in. to counter this, with large sensors you often have lots of megapixels, so you can often just crop the image with the big sensor and it will look as good as the image from the smaller (cropped) sensor.

I have this actual camcorder, and i must say, it's really good!
Yeah, the zoom is not great, but if you only zoom to like, 8x or 10x, then the quality is pretty good!
Oh, and one thing, if someone does actually wants to buy this camcorder, then you absolutely need to buy an additional battery.
It drains the battery in 2 hours when it is recording.

Dont zoom in videos. Makes it look all shaky and shitty. Good OIS and interchangeable lenses are where its at. Plus manual focus is always good if you want that super crispy shot.
But doesn't this have something to do with PAL and NTSC (Power "signals" in Europe, so that the video doesn't flicker because of the hz)?

You could just buy 30fps camera and use SVP to increase fps. Configured right makes almost no visible artifacts between the frames.

Pretty sure higher end cameras have less zoom because when you are filming something you DONT want to zoom in on it if possible. Higher end cameras are probably mainly for professionals who dont use the zoom.

The 50fps isn't a big problem for me because my phone can only handle 30fps anyways.
If you have some friends in America, and at any point they say that they are coming to the UK, ask for them to buy you a 60fps camcorder, and pay them back when they deliver the goods.

most cameras let you switch between PAL and NTSC so no, you dont need to import one from the US

Actually, zoom is a great point for camcorders, which generally don't support bokeh which is a huge minus in my opinion though..

(I am sorry for posting this comment here, I just thought that if I posted this comment on the old OCD videos you guys wouldn't see it, and I really want a reply from either of you)
I really feel so sympathetic for both of you for going through these OCD breakdowns (apologies for using the wrong term if it's not the right one) and I know that I'm not alone in these "friends going through mental issues" problems, in fact I know there are people who are going through bigger problems.
I am in no way comparing my problem to yours, I'm just telling my side of my story since I can't really trust anyone I know on this. two years ago, I met a friend, who seemed to be a very nice person and fun to be around. She seemed like the opposite sex version of me to me, because we shared a lot of interests, our sense of humour is the same, we would find the same things funny and the same things lame. However as I got closer to her I noticed she had a problem where even one simple word, could get her mad at whoever said it for sometime, even If I, say, would go to talk to someone and go back to her and say "hi", she would consider that I dumped her for someone else and would get mad at me and would refuse to tell me what happened when I ask. The closer I got to her the more I noticed this problem, and sometimes she would flip her mood in literally less than a second for no apparent reason, just because , e.g., me saying "age" reminds her of the death of someone close to her, especially her mother. I'm really unsure if this is an illness or just a trait of her personality, but either way I'm sympathetic towards her and willing to help. People who aren't close to her don't know about this and would get surprised when she gets pissed off, and they would get mad in return because she's so "demanding" and all. I can't really blame them since I would get mad at someone getting mad at me for no apparent reason without knowing this "condition". Whenever we're joined by a third party, I would be paranoid in her place because I don't want her to get pissed off, and sometimes I feel which words are going to hurt. Whenever she gets mad at me, I'm clueless about what to do, since apologizing only makes her ignore me more, trying to ignore what happened makes her even more mad, and leaving her alone until she calms down only makes the problem worse, as she would blame herself for getting so mad at me. She is the best person I've ever met (we're friends, I'm not interested in more than that), and sometimes she's in this delightful condition where nothing can get her mad and we're all joking around. But sometimes she's so unstable that I roll sentences 20 times in my mind before saying it, and I would mostly hesitate, leaving me silent, which is *also* a problem because she will think you're ignoring her. I got really affected in a way that I am so "gentle" with girls, and won't make fun of them for joking's sake by saying "my twitching grandma is less clumsier than you" thinking that it would hurt them as well.
Watching your OCD videos educated me a lot about the disorder and made me know how you guys are living with it, and made me know that there are people with bigger problems. Best of luck to you guys, Vexxsie and philip, to go through this and I really hope I get a reply to this post, because, just like you I wanted to tell someone what It feels like, and of course, my parents told me to just seek my own good and ignore her.

The problem with importing a camera from murica is that they use ntsc for encoding their video so you wont be able to use the footage of the camera with most european hardware. i am sure there is an option to convert those things but you will probably sacrafice a lot of picture quality.
NTSC and PAL are standarts for broadcasting to TV afaik. So digital camcorders don't use those standarts.

Why not just get a cheap DLSR, if you look far enough you will find ones that are capable of 4K under £1000. Plus, the zoom problem solves itself with interchangeable lenses. I just don't understand the reason of buying a camcorder.

NatSPlay I totally agree that 4K is not really worth it, especially if You don't do some cinematic content.
550D is more than enough, I have a 600D and it has very good image quality, 550D is practically identical in that sense.
this is literally under £250, a DSLR with comparable zoom and image quality will be hard to find, and also a camcorder is better for holding

Fuck buying 4k and HD cameras. Just buy a VHS camcorder. It's SD, videos don't take up HDD storage space, videos have a warm fuzzy analog feeling and they're cheap.

@@SantiagoMonroy5 okay, lets start with bitrate: pretty much every phone on the market has a high enugh bitrate to support whatever quality it is capebel of recording.
zoom: You can't expect a lense the size of a fingernail to do the same as one the size of a brick.
Low Light: Apples phones still lack in low light settings, but the Huawei P30 Pro does an amazing job at it.
Color science: This is more dependent on which filter is put over the camera than anything else, can be changed in processing.
