    Honestly the USD heirarchy tool is what I was looking for in 18.5. I saw in Nuke they have a new USD based outliner hierarchy to add and modify and work with USD in Nuke, great to see Fusion getting something similar as well.

    TBH, I wasn't really expecting any updates to Fusion, but they've surprised me with those USD updates. Great to see those. Would like to see some updates for compositing tools as well including an improved way of working with multilayer EXR files, like a nuke's shuffle node's equivalent in Fusion and if they add deep compositing in Fusion, that would be nuts, but one can only hope.

    • @VFXstudy
      @VFXstudy  11 месяцев назад +3

      Yeah, there are a few scripts and tools in Reactor that make different parts of working with EXR easier. But custom channels in Fusion and deep pixel compositing are long on the wish list from many people. Let's see, perhaps after they get the 3D system in better shape they have capacity for more 2D development as well, one can hope...

      @@VFXstudy In my humble opinion, I think they should focus more on fixing the existing 2D compositing tools and add more tools for compositing 2D and improve the EXR workflow. Ik that before Blackmagic, Eyeon focused their development for Fusion on the 3D part more than 2D because back 8-10 years ago, 3D was really slow and expensive which is one of the reasons why Nuke became the industry standard after Apple killed shake instead of Fusion. But nowadays tools like Blender and Unreal engine exists so most people, including me would wanna use Blender for doing any 3D work over Fusion when I can get photoreal results in much less time than Fusion and it's free. Would really really love them to redo the EXR workflow or atleast improve it and fix some of nodes like the stmap node, depth blur etc because every CG comp tutorial I follow for Fusion, everyone says the same thing that the depth blur in Fusion is pretty bad.

    • @VFXstudy
      @VFXstudy  11 месяцев назад +2

      @@xanzuls Yes, agree - though I see some potential for 3D tasks in Fusion as well, e.g., some smaller product visualizations and stuff like that where you could possibly do some layout tasks directly in Resolve and adjust it based on the edit without roundtripping. If we got the Render engines...
      But feel free to also voice your opinion over on the BMD forums - chances that the right people read it there are higher 🙂

    • @xanzuls
      @xanzuls 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@VFXstudy To each their own, I use both Fusion and Blender and sometimes Houdini and honestly for 80% of my 3D stuffs, I do it in Blender and rest in Houdini because it's so fast and easy and Blender also has a real-time renderer and a path trace renderer to make things look photoreal, so for that I don't use Fusion at all. And Blender also has an editor built in as well which is nowhere close to Resolve but it's still good enough to make shot sequences before you render out the final version and after that I use Fusion for which is compositing and doing 2D motion graphics. And although BM has been making improvements in mograph, there hasn't been pretty much any updates to compositing in Fusion, not even fixing and updating broken nodes.
      After recently Nuke fully went to subscription, there are a lot of small to medium sized VFX studios are gonna switch from Nuke to Fusion studio for VFX work and for them, they are gonna instantly notice a lot of things missing in Fusion soley for compositing, like Fusion doesn't have spline warp and you'd need to use the Krokodove plugin for that which is not supported in the current version of Fusion, lack of Nuke's smart vector in Fusion although there's a solution in Reactor but it's overcomplicated, good noise reduction, official support for Cryptomattte, and of course an updated EXR workflow that's not 15+ years old, something like a LayerContactSheet node in Fusion etc etc etc.

  • @squirekev
    @squirekev Год назад +4

    Great overview of the new features: can't wait till our IT gives the green light on upgrading.
    Blackmagic is helping out VFX compositors and Colourists: they need to focus on the job of the Finishing Editors now. Bread and butter like the ability to bring over metadata from XML AAF ingests into Fusion as editable keyframe splines, source/rec TC of clips in a burn-in (aka PPro) or list tool (aka AVID), a decent time-speed ramper with the meta of Resolve, but the tools in Fusion, and a mini timeline not want to pull my hair out.
    They democratized the Colour market, they're not going to take over the Nuke market, and just assume that online finishing (which is comparable to the Colourist as far as using Resolve) is just fine. They need a longform ex-Flame user on staff I think. It's Lustre all over again. heh

    • @VFXstudy
      @VFXstudy  Год назад +5

      Yeah, some great renderer for USD would be great. I hope that they release some SDK for their USD stuff so that people can start incorporating 3rd party renderers. I think even the free Blender Cycles Renderer has some version with Hydra delegate if I'm not mistaken. Having that in Fusion would be awesome.

    • @rano12321
      @rano12321 Год назад +2

      @@VFXstudy I could be wrong but I don't think they'd need an SDK release for the hydra delegate implementation, Hydra delegate is basically a USD viewport sort of, so if the rendered support Hydra delegate ,then it can easily be implemented in Fusion with USD. I was hoping for Blender cycles but adding the options for other render engines with Hydra delegate would be super useful as well like Vray, octane etc.

    • @VFXstudy
      @VFXstudy  Год назад +3

      @@rano12321 Not sure about the technical details. But I think the included Storm renderer is supposed to be a Hydra delegate, but I haven't heard of any other or how to get it in there. I think there might still be something missing. Though I have heard that BMD's intention is to allow other render engines in there... We'll see.

    • @rano12321
      @rano12321 11 месяцев назад +1

      Why would you need a pipeline for USD. The whole point of usd is that it's universal. And imo the targeted audience of Resolve users and Blender users aren't the same.

    • @headroom.graphics
      @headroom.graphics 11 месяцев назад

      I don't know what you mean by Blender or Fusion's target audience, but in VFX workflows 3D and video compositing tools are used together, and in the best cases there are pipeline plug-ins like Cineware for Unreal.@@rano12321

    Blackmagic should prioritise fixing all those old bugs and spontaneous crashes that have plagued the app for years, before adding more features

    • @VFXstudy
      @VFXstudy  Год назад +5

      They do - though honestly it's running quite stable from me and I find the features useful. If you have specific old bugs, report them to the BMD support...

    • @RelayComputer
      @RelayComputer Год назад

      @@VFXstudy There are plenty of minor bugs that should be easy to report.
      However the most annoying ones are difficult to reproduce for reporting. I believe they are related with caching. I refer to the occasions were you make changes on complex timelines having several layers of video as well as adjustment clips with possibly Fusion effects in them, and the app fails to play the changes unless you close and open the app again. It’s not easy to report because it’s not happening all the time or in a consistent way, and the timeline just plays ok after the app is restarted.
      A similar thing happens in Fusion alone. Sometimes you make changes there, which will not play properly on the edit tab until after restarting the app, or will play a intermixed set of frames belonging to before and after the changes.
      I think this kind of issue is common and old enough to have blackmagic working on it

  • @FrancoAversa

    Hi, you saw that the Extrude3D node has two more inputs, one for the material and one for the material bevel. But I don't understand how "Bevel material input" works. Do you have any information? When they release new functions, aren't there instructions? Thank you

    • @VFXstudy
      @VFXstudy  11 месяцев назад +1

      If you attach an external material, it's replacing the internal material from the Material tab. You can attach a separate material for the "Bevel", meaning the side of the extrusion, that way you get one material on the face and another one for the side/extrusion. Good for nice edge effects, you have the same in the Text3D.
      Re documentation: There are some notes in the release notes and they are supposed to update the manual - but it seems they haven't yet. I would expect that to come very soon. Usually, they have the manual updated with or shortly after the release. For major releases they also publish separate "new feature guides" but I don't think they do that for a minor update like this one. Doesn't seem necessary either.

    "If there's anything in particular you want me to cover more or make detailed tutorials on, let me know." Alrighty right, I'll take you up on that... 😅 Seriously though, thank you for all your great content. There's however indeed one pitfall that's been bugging me ever since I ran into it - striking in its simplicity, yet insidious in the details.
    I wanted to create nothing more than a slideshow where I would stack a series of pictures on top of each other. Turned out that trying to render 20-something 4k images on top of each other as the pictures piled up wasn't the greatest of all ideas, DaVinci Resolve kept crashing on me until I rendered out the first batch of images and then underlaid the rest with that render. Worked, but had me wondering: what would be good settings for prerendering out footage just for the purpose of immediately reimporting it into your timeline? Would you advocate for exporting EXR files (as stated in your Loader and Saver Nodes Video from a couple years back)?
    Would you pursue a different strategy altogether? Would be cool if you could shed light on this in one of your upcoming videos! Cheers.

      I'm not sure if the image format is the problem here or oif there's some other inefficiency. Loading 20 images is less than 1 second of video footage. I would assume that the pure loading and decoding of the images shouldn't be a huge deal. But maybe the processing afterward is. Do they all appear at the same time? If it's in sequence, I would assume you can put them in a timeline where you always have only 2 or 3 overlap - depending on the animation. Or in Fusion you might have 20 MediaIns but maybe not all processing at the same time.
