I was about to disregard the rest of the 36 exposures after taking only 10 shots in my Olympus OM10 (film advance got stuck, I had to open the bottom part to adjust mechanism so before that I decided to take out the loaded film as I didn't want to waste the 10 shots I got) I was just about to load a fresh roll when a friend tip me in on this video. You are a lifesaver! Thanks so much, you just saved me a couple of bucks.
Ive never had this happen, but this is inspiring me to shoot a roll of film entirely at half exposure and then reshoot it fully again from the beginning and see what double exposures I end up getting with the difference in time. Every time Ive done double exposures before I always did just a single frame, not advancing the film. But that usually meant the results were intentional and close in time. I guess bonus creative points for frames not lining up too.
This is also super handy for film developing. You can fish out the film and then partially load it onto the developing spool before loading the rest in the dark
I was lucky enough to have a spare bit of developed film that didn't come out right to use, worked like a charm on the second try, you're a lifesaver man!
hey! im trying to do this but its not clear in the video if i should wind the new roll or the old one? and until what point should i insert the flim on the old roll?
Literally watched this when I got my Fomapan inside the can. These things were very tight on the spool but luckily it got out via wetting the film! Thanks alot!
Damn my Olympus Mju just rewinded Gold200 after only 15 exposures of 36 during Sicily Roadtrip. Wonder if i can use that trick, reload the film and shoot 15 exposures in pitch black dark the proceed normally!
Today I will develop my first rolls ever and I was worried about how I would get the film out of the canisters (couldn't find a retriever or a can opener in my local shop yesterday). Licking worked wonders though, thanks! And that's a sentence I didn't think I'd say
Not that I had not heard (or seen) these things before - but never were they presented like this with a little smirk and of course "Be kind, rewind..." ;-) Thanks Noah!
This is so helpful! Thank you so much for these tips. I just accidentally did this to a roll and was trying to figure out how to fix it, so this came at the perfect time!
I used to just take the film in the darkroom, pop it open and transfer the spool to a reloadable canister. I used to keep a spare reloadable cartridge in my camera bag for such emergencies (usually not mine).
I have an old camera and while messing around accidentally retracted the entire unshot roll of film into the canister. This got it out in just TWO attempts!!
Dumb question but I put a roll into a camera that only took 27 exposures. I rewound it and can put it in my camera that can take 36 but is there any kind of way to get to those last 9 frames without double exposing the first 27?
Yes! If you retrieve the film back out of the canister then you can load it back into the camera and shoot the rest. Try your best to load it the same as you did before and advance your camera maybe 1 or 2 shots past #3 so you don't double-expose your first three shots. Then you can shoot the rest. You will have to shoot the camera, but as you are going past the first three pictures you originally took just cover the lens with you hand or a lens cap.
@@AnalogResurgence oh thank you so much. I'm still learning and sometimes I messed it up. So after retrieve the film back out of the canister, I put the film back in the camera. After that, how can I not double-expose my first three shots? I just cover the lens for the firsts 3 shots (that I already have taken) as if I was shooting them for the first time, right?!
Yes just completely cover the lens for the first 3 shots. You might want to even do the first 4 shots just to make sure you’re fully past the area of film that was shot
Thanks ot helped me visualize how the film worked but i didnt have a extra lying around so i needed to pull the shell up a bit to get it but thanks anyways.
dumb question. Does the film labratory can work with my finished film when i send it to them? I finished the roll and rolled it all the way back...Should i normally leave a little film outside? Even when im dont with the film and want to send it to the film labratory for developing the images? Or do you usally send the film fully rewind to the lab? :) Totally new in business Thanks
what if we don’t haven any of those, I brought this 1999 Coca Cola film camera and it’s my first film camera that had film in it and I don’t have any tools to pull the film back out
This is a little unrelated to today's video but my Canon ae-1 just broke (and I really loved that camera!) do you have any suggestions for a new 35 or 120mm camera (Preferably with a light meter)!! Love your videos! Thanks!
What? You mean that licking the entire roll of film after shooting it does *NOT* develop it? I thought that that was called the "salivol" method???? :-) FYI -- I have never been able to get the lick-film-tongue-retrieval method to work -- so I have one of the $5 tools....
Omg, that’s nuts, we run a auto Noritsu tongue remover SF2 I think as I recently bought the forth set of stainless tounges in the past 25 years and we use the same manual remover ushowed, if we can’t get them because they are eg damaged or folded back on themselves we open them in the darkroom or dark box by pushing our thumbnails into the opening and gently peel it open and transfer to a film holder, I’ve wondered if you can pop the end off, repair and pop the end back on but never tried, that’s how reloadable canisters are
I was testing a New to me Camera, and before I could test this roll of expired film the damn thing rewound on me before I could even friggin test it and it rewound the leader all the way back in the canister (Whoopee!!) this fix unfortunately Didn’t work for me…then again I goofed with the cannister before I saw this video…why do I always gotta learn things the hard way? I mean yeah, it was film that expired in 2019 I got for free with some free cameras but still…Murphy’s Law was VERY in affect for me trying to figure out how this Fujifilm HD-M works lol. Now I don’t have any film to test my Pentax SuperProgram once the batteries and lens show up for that one!!
I've had lukewarm success with the licking method. It takes me a handful of tries. But I got myself a film lead retriever and I can work it to work every single time. Best $10 I ever spent.
My trick I've learned is to rotate the film in the canister with the little shaft on top, and put your ear up to the canister, so you can hear the end of the leader film flick as it goes over the slit in the canister. That way you know you are sticking onto the end of the film, might help.
Got it on the third try, amazing, thank you! It was literally my first roll of film ever and I thought it was a goner.
Same.
Got it on twentieth try after feeling quite desperate, just keep trying is the key
Same thing happened in my Nikon f3. Was able to get the film but every “expert” is telling me my f3 is toast
Ah! Perfect! I just wound a barely started film to get at a stuck shutter I thought the film was ruined. Thankfully I found this video. Pure chance!
Literally all you have to do is stop as soon as it lets go of the takeup spool
This is also super handy for film developing. You can fish out the film and then partially load it onto the developing spool before loading the rest in the dark

Hey man, big thanks. Not shot much film and this saved me because i knocked the rewind button about 2 photos in. Saved me money and sadness there!
WOW! just tried this and it worked like a goddamn charm! Thank you for spreading the good word 🙏
Omgggg thank you so much this is very helpful! I almost lost my hope on the 3rd try but repeated a few more times and finally got it:)!!
"Be kind, rewind... Something that applies to film..." Hahaha So funny!
Haven't heard that since the Blockbuster days.
Thanks for the tip regarding using another roll of film as a retriever!
I never got the film retriever tool to work and I got two of those!
After 10 tries I finally got it!! This is so helpful😂
This didn't work for me🤕 but hey I'm glad it's working for everyone else!
hey! im trying to do this but its not clear in the video if i should wind the new roll or the old one? and until what point should i insert the flim on the old roll?
It worked after a few tries, you’re a godsend !
ah i did it!!! thank you 😭. shot a whole roll of film only to find out it didn’t catch anything 😭😤
This worked like a charm, I got it on the second try. Thanks!
Saved my first Portra 400, thank you! 🥹 Worked in three tries, don't give up 💪
i was about to give up- took me about a dozen tries but it did finally work!!!!
thank you🙏🏼
first try got it out, you're the best, that saved me a new roll of Pentax gold
You are a life saver for this. I panicked thinking I had lost my whole roll of film 😅 so thank you for this 🙏🏼
Literally watched this when I got my Fomapan inside the can. These things were very tight on the spool but luckily it got out via wetting the film! Thanks alot!
Did this attempting to load my second ever roll - thank you !
thank you so much this saved my friends film roll
Got it first try!! Now I know what film tastes like 😅 thank you!!
Got IT! Saved a roll of Portra 400... Thank you. I feel much better. ( only took two tries )
Life saver!! Took many many many MANY tries but I finally got it!!
Damn my Olympus Mju just rewinded Gold200 after only 15 exposures of 36 during Sicily Roadtrip. Wonder if i can use that trick, reload the film and shoot 15 exposures in pitch black dark the proceed normally!
Oh it worked in less then 10min. OMG, thx for doing this video 😊

I literally cannot believe this worked! You saved me a lot of frustration (and $10)
what if you don’t have any other film to use to get the other film out?
Not that I had not heard (or seen) these things before - but never were they presented like this with a little smirk and of course "Be kind, rewind..." ;-) Thanks Noah!

Awesome, it works! Thanks, it did take a couple of tries but success.
This was super helpful, thanks! It worked after about 8 tries 😁
Nice! Worked a charm. Thanks very much!
Thank you so much! Worked for me on the second try
I have an old camera and while messing around accidentally retracted the entire unshot roll of film into the canister. This got it out in just TWO attempts!!
Worked first try ✌️ thanks!
We got it on like the 3rd try. Thanks so much!
thank you so much i thought it was over for me it worked after 5 tries
Dumb question but I put a roll into a camera that only took 27 exposures. I rewound it and can put it in my camera that can take 36 but is there any kind of way to get to those last 9 frames without double exposing the first 27?
Worked 1st try for me! Thanks for the tip!
I would have never figured this out. Thank you for this video i just saved myself a few bucks
It’ll definitely come handy one day! 🎞🎞🎞
You just saved my precious roll of Color Plus. 🎞️👍
Best trick ever!!!! thanks so much!
Thanks for this!! I've done this with a film that I only have taken 3 pics and I accidentally rewound. Can I still use this film?
Yes! If you retrieve the film back out of the canister then you can load it back into the camera and shoot the rest. Try your best to load it the same as you did before and advance your camera maybe 1 or 2 shots past #3 so you don't double-expose your first three shots. Then you can shoot the rest. @@AnalogResurgence thak you so so much!!!!! you saved my film sz
Thanks a lot! To my surprise it worked great 1st time with a stray piece of film I had!
Thanks ot helped me visualize how the film worked but i didnt have a extra lying around so i needed to pull the shell up a bit to get it but thanks anyways.
Thank you! It worked
lol, the licking worked. Thanks mate!
dumb question.
The lab has no problem with a fully rewound roll! You don’t need to worry about leaving a little film out when you give it to them
thanks, it worked! but i noticed that the film tastes a bit chemical: is it actually save to lick it? 😝
what if we don’t haven any of those, I brought this 1999 Coca Cola film camera and it’s my first film camera that had film in it and I don’t have any tools to pull the film back out
Holy cow! Just like many comments, I was ready to just trash that Portra400 and then remembered how much I paid for it. Only took 3 attempts.
This is a little unrelated to today's video but my Canon ae-1 just broke (and I really loved that camera!) do you have any suggestions for a new 35 or 120mm camera (Preferably with a light meter)!! Love your videos! Thanks!

Great video ❤

EXACTLY what I needed, thank you!
Thank god, I effed up and hit the retract button on a new roll on my snappy 50 😂🤣
I've had lukewarm success with the licking method. It takes me a handful of tries. But I got myself a film lead retriever and I can work it to work every single time. Best $10 I ever spent.
It didn't work for me even though I already put the 'helper' deep soo deep :(
thank you! this worked ❤
Thank you for this!!!
Never managed to pull out the film. The first lever just pushes the film, meaning only one tongue of the tool manages to get inside the film
It doea not get inside. 🙃
anyone have advice for when you have neither of these items?
I love this thank you sooo much
Absolute goat
What if we dont have a nothwr roll of canister?
thanks so much! it worked :)
thanks big dawg
omg thank you!! it worked yay
Amazing this works!!!
You can pull it out _slowly_ ? I've always been yanking it, and always take me 50 tries. I'm gonna try slowly next time...
My trick I've learned is to rotate the film in the canister with the little shaft on top, and put your ear up to the canister, so you can hear the end of the leader film flick as it goes over the slit in the canister. That way you know you are sticking onto the end of the film, might help.
You just save my life!
How'd you know that I got mine messed up yesterday!
Good advice!
Thank you so much❤
THANK YOU. I got it!
thank you!
Honestly thank you so much 🥰
Nice! I thought I would have to cut the can open to get it out lol
yo, thank you so much!
Lifesaver
i can’t get it 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
THANK YOU!!!
thanks!
Worked!!
Made it after 10 tries+ 😅
Key is some fluid, makes it grippy
ayyyeee second try!!
Thankyou
So i can just give it this person like the people who finish the pictures like that and it’s no drama if the film is in the canister?
wow this took me about 20 minutes but I DID IT
