I have a 76 914 2.0 liter. I love this car, rust free, I have put new from lowered suspension to bushings, new turbo steering, rebuilt like new trans and was blessed with a tight engine with little work there. If you could drive with your eyes closed you would swear it was new and I am old enough to say I have driven new. The money invested, worth every penny.

I'm on board with this guy's ethos. You can buy a lot of quality for not much money when you get over the need to be the coolest car owner, and just buy a lower end version of a quality vehicle. As for PDK, I didn't really feel it had much delay or lag, but it definitely takes a lot of the experience away from driving the car. A Cayman with a stick feels like a very livable sports car. A Cayman with PDK feels like a very compromised commuter vehicle. The PDK just makes it so much more of an appliance and I would skip it for that reason alone.

And this car stays with me until I die. But the 914 you drive in the video looks badly maintained.
The 914 devours the corners with ease and the gearbox is only difficult when you come to a stop and have to put it in 1st but you have to work, no abs, no servo, but lots of fun.

Very good review. As a white beard I'm now driving the 911 Carrera S Convertible I've ever wanted. And I love it. But as a student I drove a second hand 914. And it was a nimble, phantastic car. It had it quirks. Changing gears was not easy - it was actually an achievement when you could do this without some nasty noise. The "Heiztaschen" - the heating system - was prone to rust. But the road holding capabilities were superb. I also had a 718 (Boxster) - and I agree: as much fun as the 911. But alas, a have had to have the 911 in the end... Excellent review, to say it again 😃 Note: there is a reason why the changing of gears in the 914 was such a hassle: the linkage were very long - the gearbox being behind the middle motor, which was right behind your back.

A clarification - the 1970 Le Mans 2 liter class winner was the Sonauto Porsche 914-6 GT, having a 220 hp 2 liter flat-6 engine so clearly with the right mods, the chassis was quite capable of handling some decent horsepower. I think it was sold on for like $1000 usd in the late 90's. Now I own a 987 Cayman S in racing yellow and love it. I'm not the biggest fan of the headlights but the driving experience you get in it is amazing. Flat 6, 6 speed, mid engine, light weight 300hp at the crank, it's a special car. The one that I will someday move up to if not a 911 would be a 981. They have that newer styling but still a flat 6 soundtrack. Former 914-6 owner here. The 2.0 is usually slower and rougher than the 1.7, especially the FI version. I see the one you drove had a dual carb conversion done. Those are incredibly difficult to keep balanced, and on paper should give greater performance but in reality cause more problems with drivability than they do power. A simple single carb on a 1.7 that’s been tuned properly and the steering in tip top shape, you should be able to throw around corners like nothing else on earth, even outperforming Porsche’s current line-up in the curve. Of course, performance in the straightways can’t hold a candle to newer Porsches, or even the base model 911 of the period. In fact, 914’s are favored for handling over most other cars (except the Miata) in autocross circles because of the way they should handle. There are also mods that need to be done to tighten up shifting as over the years the transmission shifter becomes sloppy. The example you drove isn’t representative of a really well maintained and set up 914

I had an orange 1.7. in the late 80's. Such fun. I seem to recall the 2.0 was mainly for US emissions and not more powerful. One thing, thinner tyres are good on this. The one here seems to have wide wheels. It wasn't quick, but you didn't have to slow down much. My mate had a 924 and even though he was probably the faster driver, he couldn't keep up in the corners.. I'd love one again, even though I drive a 968.

    • @carmagpodcast

I very much share this sentiment about base models.. I'm happy to drive a Miata (constrained by budget) but if I had more money, I'm not sure I'd ever want to trade it in for something 'superior' given that I enjoy it so much for everything it is. It's hardly a comfortable car but I have a sofa and a bed at home for that.
Besides, the less options it has, the less dead weight you carry along with you, so there's that too. And less to go wrong (imagine having broken down options that are only along for the ride...)
And yes, when your expectations are so low you're surprised you made it to your destination, that's another level of enjoyment; a real sense of adventure that a reliable comfortable daily driver can never give you.

If you have never driven a PDK car, drive one. All this talk about manuals will go away. The PDK is immense, changes gear about 10 times faster than any manual could, and also prevents you from over-revving. I've been H&T'ing for over 20 years in everything from a Transit van towing a trailer, to full on race cars and it becomes subconscious so it's not something I enjoy, just something that happens.
The PDK allows such flexibility and precision along with more ratios. Amazing and, in reality, MORE involving.
