A question often pondered; is it safe to shoot sabot slugs out of a smooth bore shotgun... Yes! Only stabilization and accuracy can be affected slightly depending on distance.
I have an 870, 18.5 in smooth barrel. I tried the Hornady custom lite slugs for wood self defense ( bigfoots, dogmen, methheads, etc.) and they were causing accurate massive damage at 25 yards. My intended use is for 10-15 yards engagement, so they’ll work for me.
Oh absolutely! 💯 a 12ga slug will take care of all the pesky critters you mentioned. 00 buck at 10 to 15yds is also devastating, as I'm sure you know... The 12ga is a very underrated firearm and super versatile, not to mention relatively cheap to shoot. Thanks for watching and commenting! 😎👍
If you are shooting at 10 to 15 yrds ,why go to the extra expense of sabots when a plain old rifled slug would be very effective out to 50 yrs at half the cost. Take that sabot to 40 plus yrds and chances are it is tumbling already
@@peterhambleton7649 I have another shotgun for these sabot's... I only wanted to make this video to show that you "could shoot" sabot's through a smooth bore safely without damaging your barrel. So in a pinch, if it was your only option you can use them... I definitely understand that they would tumble and loose accuracy at further distances 💯 I have some good ol Remington rifled slugs for that Ithaca. Thanks for watching and commenting dude! 😎👍
@BoomStuff556 Number 4 buck for defense also. Should even work on black bear, although 00 buck would probably penetrate a bit better. But #4 buck would work just fine on other 2 or 4 legged predators. But, 00 buck and slugs may be more readily available just depending on your area. Merry Christmas everybody! God bless, Rob
The reason is says rifled barrel is because the rifling creates spin which creates accuracy, stabilization, and the most effective range. With a smooth bore it can wobble and lose effective range
@@grayzonecomedyYTplastic and brass will 100% never damage your steel barrel That's fudlore bs It will leave residue which can be difficult to clean, that's it
Not horrible at all... I haven't tried any over 25yds yet. But if it was all I had, I'd feel comfortable enough to hunt with it personally. Thanks for the sub & comment, I appreciate it 🙏
They dont perform well in my browning gold, keyhole for days lol and inaccurate asf. Was lucky enough to find a fully rifled barrel so now its a game changer
Oh man, a rifled barrel is the shiz for sure! I just like trying things to see what happens... my Ithaca has a really long ass barrel, and I plan on trying these sabot's at a longer distance and see if I can hit something. It will be up on my channel whenever I get the time. Thanks for watching & leaving a comment! Have a great weekend 😎👍
I have an ithica model 37 featherlite 20 guage with a deer slayer smoothbore barrel. Will shoot slugs better than my 76 yr old eyes will, but I can still hit a 4inch circle EVERY time at 75 yards. Why would I want any better than that
Maybe a dumb question but.. there's no chance it could damage the inside of the barrel, right? Worst case it just wouldn't be as accurate as you'd like?
Not a dumb question at all dude! And nope, it won't damage your barrel; but yes, long range accuracy will be affected... but it'll still get the job done within 25 to 30yds.

But rifled slugs are cheaper and are more accurate from a smoothbore, so why do this?
Only to prove that it's possible.
