You only tested 1 mfg. Where are the Lightfield, Hornady, Remington, Winchester slugs. My slug gun holds a 2-3” group at 100 yds. You didn’t even finish sighting in to center up your slugs. It was nice windage shooting at 100 yds though. I would love to see this test redone and expanded. You may find each barrel prefers a particular slug. Best to you for this coming season.
I use sabot slugs only because i prefer to have my optic mounted to the cantilever barrel instead of drilling and tapping the receiver. That way i can easily swap out my 26" field barrel for small game or clays. At home i remove the plug and keep the 18.5" on for HD. It really is a great platform.
I think your 100 yard groups would be tighter with a scope. I'm late here, but the 870 and Mossberg 500 both are not drilled and tapped for sights on the receiver. My Mossbarg 930 semi-auto is. From the pictures of the new models, it looks like the Remington V3 might be drilled and tapped. On my 870 20 gauge Skeet Gun ( old, old model) I mounted a scope with a mount that sits only on the left side of the receiver. Snugging that down until it's "just" tight still pinches the receiver and affects cycling the action, so I would recommend only using scope mounts that straddle the receiver, and replace the nuts with nylock nuts. Always test your sights at the range. Lining up the two beads on the ventilated rib on my skeet gun on the bullseye would put my pattern about 13" to the left at 100 yards.
I have the same Remington 870 with the smoothbore and rifled deer barrel. For years I have wanted to get a 18.5" smoothbore barrel to use with the rifled slugs. I've seen a few of these videos that have very similar results to stay with the 2 originial barrels, possibly getting a rifled choke tube. I also have an Ithaca Deer Slayer 12 gauge that shoots and groups cheap Remington Slugger shells well.
i would like to have seen the difference between the sabot and rifled slugs, both through 24” barrels. i feel like the rifled slugs were at an advantage with the 4” longer barrel.
i use a red dot on my rifled barrel and my shot groups and distance improved. Old eyes cant use the iron sites like i used to....plus the red dot stays on for the smooth bore for turkey season.
I know this is 4 years old, but there’s a reason why everything from tanks, to shotgun, and rifle bullets use sabots you get a good caliber with increased velocity. Velocity is king when it comes to shooting we all know that.😊 Still good job on the comparison!😊
Just shot my Savage 212 rifled barrel with winchester super x rifled slugs...3/4" group at 60 yards. I usually hunt with copper solids but bought these for backup this year. I think they will do great out 100 yards.
For accuracy at 100 yds my Savage 212 favors the 58 cal 1oz sabots over the lighter and faster 300 gr sabots. It shoots them all well enough for hunting but the Remington Accu Tip it favors the most with 3 shots making one ragged hole. Hornady SST it favors the least with 1.25" group at 100 yards.
@@StacyHagerty yes I agree my Savage 212 loves heavier slower slugs. Not saying the lighter faster ones are terrible in it but I notice a difference. Cleaning was worse with rifled slugs I would clean probably every chance you can. But shooting at 3 to 5 times in the field before cleaning would be fine. I would shoot about five rounds and then clean it while target shooting. It is dirtier but the lead in a good brass brush or borer snake cleans in a few pulls.
@@derekbeyers8804 OK great, I haven't tried rifled slugs. Was worried the barrel leading would be terrible to deal with. Have heard from others too that they group better out of a rifled barrel.
I have an 870 20ga with the smooth bore slug barrel pinned to the reciever, and that lil gun will cut keyhole groups at 50 with federal 2 3/4 " foster " slugs all day.
I have a Mossberg bolt action with rifled barrel that shoots groups so tight they take out the bullseye of the target with sabot slugs and a scope at fifty yards. Because the woods are so thick here you normally don’t get shots beyond thirty yards and is better than a rifle in brush. It is my deer gun of choice unless field hunting with potential long shots and no brush. Good video, not sure why the groups were not tighter with the sabots, could be the ammo. Darn good shooting with the rifled slugs, very impressive grouping.
I use an 18.5" Mossberg smooth bore for my 50 yard max hunting here in Michigan. I put a cheap 3-9X40 scope on it, and group 2" with Remington Sluggers at 50 yards. I've got a lot of other deer rifles, but this really puts them down. Also it is very short and easy to use in the ground blind. I usually take neck shots. I'm too old to chase deer :) - Joe
In my experience, the 1oz sabot slug drops them where they stand 👍 Just have to be careful with the angle I shoot them at, I’ve lost a shoulder roast. Those slugs do a lot of damage. My aunt makes a mean neck roast, that’s why I aim for the heart 🇺🇸
@@pacifist_productions I like the heart too much to shoot it, so I mainly take headshots unless it is a trophy buck and even then I try to clip them at the top of the neck.
So many like organ shots. My Dad taught me about neck shots and twice that had dropped them for me. I'm not to old to track. Just haven't really learned how properly.
The weight difference between the 870 and the 500 makes a difference when carrying a long ways and quick target acquisition. as far as the safety “click” issue goes… my Mossberg is virtually silent at all times…
My friend shoots Remington sluggers and federal truball through his rifled 870 12 gauge and gets 3” at 100 yds. He hasn’t had any issues except dead deer.
Great info. I'm always trying to see how far I can reach out with different shotguns & various loads. It's like an addiction 🤣. Thanks for the video, good stuff 👍
I know this video is old, but I want to thank you for it, everyone should own this firearm. Great, legendary, and very reliable. I smooth bore sabot's for the win!
Have you actually had a barrel shoot off? 4:24 or been there when It did? I would think it would cause it to be out of battery and not fire if it wasn’t on right. But I don’t really know. Just my thinking.
My 20 ga. 870 carrying a 22" fully rifled barrel with cantilevered scope mount is a tack driver out to 250 yds. using solid copper sabots. It is in essence a very large caliber rifle. I only use the rifled barrel for hunting. My 870 has a 7 round 1 piece factory mag. I use Foster Slugs in the stock 18.5" barrel. I only load #4 buckshot or 00 buckshot for indoor self defense. Outdoors or in my truck it is 7/8 oz. rifled slugs. 7 rounds of big bore copper bullets at 1600 fps is definitely formidable.
I have a Mossberg 535 with rifled barrel an it shoot 100 yards with ease with accuracy an I use the Remington 3” accu tip 1900FPS 385grain an no problems with 100yard accuracy
Never worried about lead fouling in my scoped rifled barrel Mossberg 500. Rifled slugs shoot just fine and do the job for me at a substantially lower cost..
I have a Rem 870 shotgun with the same laminated stocks, and an 18/12 " cylinder bore barrel. The only difference is a Bushnell TRS 25 red dot that sits on a Remington saddle mount. I'm a useless shot without the red dot, but shoot fine with it. 😶
I think for sabot slugs with a full rifled barrel and a scope is the best combination cause you can adjust the cross hairs to where you need it I myself have three remington's shotguns all 870 pump 28 inch barrel for bird and clays full choke and 18 inch smooth barrel home defense a 24 inch fully rifled barrel with a scope and at 100 yards get groups about the size of my fist shooting hornady american whitetail slugs 325 grain 12 gauge 2 3/4 that's just from my experience great video 👍 and good luck out there hunting deer I also us shotgun with slugs to hunt deer and pig out here in Texas in public land
I accidentally bought a box of sabot slugs instead of rifled for my smooth bore shotgun and I was wandering if I could still get decent accuracy out of it?
No, the smoothbore won't impart any spin on the round as it goes through the barrel. You can shoot it, but accuracy will be poor, and the slug will likely tumble.
the first one , wich you didn't figured out where it went , went on 5:35 6 inches right and down , of your right target. Right on the wood mark .how did that happen ??
I use rifled slugs only mainly because we can use buckshot to hunt deer down here in Florida so no need for rifled barrels when buckshot is used a lot more than slugs
The 870 Express magnum I use with a 28in barrel with a patternmaster chock tube I get a great pattern with 3in 00buck in federal premium 15pellet copper plated without flight control but wasn't impressed with a rifled barrel beyond 50yds what I'm getting with buckshot the same distance but get superior accuracy with a H&R 980 ultra slug with sabots out to 100 and 200yds with its 24in heavy barrel.

I only bought Hi-Viz Thombuster II sight for my 870 smooth bore 28 inc full length by Remington Slugger I had a similar group like yours. Pretty consistently. We tried my friend's one with a rifled barrel. We figured out the only thing you can win is a more compact size what is good for hunting from a ground blind or handle in a wild boar driven hunt. And for a mire handy gun, I don't think it would worth the money for hunting. I even don't go for a shorter barrel for home defense but a magazine extension instead. That way I have a pretty long gun yeah for sure but 10 round capacity is Hell of firepower with a 12 gauge not to mention how easy to mount white light on the magazine extension.
What is everyone's go to for sabots for a 870 20 gauge. Just picked up a rifled barrel. I'm limited on sabots. Hornady SST, Winchester BRI, and only 8 shells of Remington accu tip.
The 12 ga slugs have way to nasty recoil. I gave up on it. It also blows a hole in your deer the size of baseball. I now use an 870 with a 20 inch rifled barrel with Remingtom 7/8 foster slugs and it shoots just fine! It does not hurt the barrel! Velocity is a whopping 1,800 ft per second. The foster slug is stable in flight and has good expansion. Toss those sabots in the trash!
I run with an 870 3" Magnum. I BOUGHT a rifled barrel for it. Fact of the matter is that every round has its own best use. I dont often use scatter, but there are activities in which its good, so have the choked smooth barrel standing by. I would rather hunt with solid rounds as scatter is really kind of weak per round for big game, if they hit. I want to penetrate deeply, take out critical structure Im aiming for on the way. However the rifled barrel is largely for one single slug: The Brenneke Magnum Crush. You see, I have a foldable stock on the shotgun and its most often used as a camp gun. I run the Magnum Crush for 1 1/2 oz of hard cast at 3,800 foot pounds of impact on dangerous game with a 0.71" round. Bears. Its my bear gun and that is my bear round. It stops what you throw it at. Rifled Barrels ONLY. They are stronger, and right on the box its mandatory for this ammo. If I want to hunt something other than bear or wish to use a lighter round there are still high power alternatives. Red Magic for instance at 3,000 foot pounds is a sabot. Black Magic in the same ballpark is a slug. These can be run with smooth barrels apparently. Normally Its a pistol grip camp gun loaded with Crush and Im hunting with a 30-06 at 3000 foot pounds.
If this is correct and I assume it is, you would be foolish to hunt with anything but the rifled slugs, they weigh more, bring more energy to the target deform more and are just plain more deadly than the sabot. I generally prefer buckshot as most of my hunting is done in very tight cover, but when I do hunt in more open areas I find very satisfactory results and I have no rear sight. Just a 30" barrel and a full choke, the same one I use for small game. Keep it simple one gun one barrel many different types of game good for deer, (buckshot and slugs) ducks, turkey, goose, bear, pheasants, coyote. Did I leave anything off the list?
I'm a profound proponent of this three gun set: a 22LR handgun, a shotgun with a smooth bore n a scoped rifled barrel. Oh, that's only 2-1/2 guns though. I never was good at math. That collection with cover any situation inside of 200yd. Farther away? Hunt closer, hunting isn't supposed to be easy. If it's a threat, it's far enough to hide or escape from.
There is no 'y' in sabot. If you are French you call it Sa'bo with no 't' as they have a silent t. Normal people call it sabot pronounced 'sabbit, rhymes with rabbit. If the army people call it a say-bow then they are wrong and of course stupid. When did army generals ever know anything. They have to get their mammas back to wipe their useless fat asses.
I shot a deer with 44 mag soft point ( 8" ) & 12 ga Sabot slugs . The result was the same , they ran off with a heart shot & you could not tell they were hit . 75 yds & dropped . I will never use them again . 44mag with HPs ONLY , Much Better . The damage to the deer was the same , 1 clean hole in & out .
If you're poor you don't have a lot of money the one weapon you should buy is a shotgun you could kill anything from a squirrel to a moose with a shotgun.
Your presentation is perfect, just enough chatter and quick to the results.

Thanks Dan, I do plan on redoing this test. TFW brother
Thanks for the video, very insightful!
My 870 slug barrel ,smooth bore. Really shot the REM. Sluggter 1oz the best 23/4 in .
Them old 870 were good shotguns. I have an old Mossberg 500. I never used rifling but hunted with buckshot. Good deer guns ,,,
I think your 100 yard groups would be tighter with a scope.
Slugs of any type are what a rifled barrel is made for
go shoot noting but rifled slugs out your rifled barrel and see what happens
Just shot my Savage 212 rifled barrel with winchester super x rifled slugs...3/4" group at 60 yards. I usually hunt with copper solids but bought these for backup this year. I think they will do great out 100 yards.
How was it when came time to clean the barre?
Darn good shooting with the rifled slugs, very impressive grouping.
hi, i want to buy 870 with rifled barrel, will i be able to use regular ammo like smooth barrels?
I use an 18.5" Mossberg smooth bore for my 50 yard max hunting here in Michigan. I put a cheap 3-9X40 scope on it, and group 2" with Remington Sluggers at 50 yards. I've got a lot of other deer rifles, but this really puts them down. Also it is very short and easy to use in the ground blind. I usually take neck shots. I'm too old to chase deer :)
- Joe
My 870 and Mossberg 930 both have cylinder bores so I can shoot anytime I get my hands on in 12ga
The weight difference between the 870 and the 500 makes a difference when carrying a long ways and quick target acquisition.
as far as the safety “click” issue goes… my Mossberg is virtually silent at all times…
Great video, can you do a scope on the sabot with rifled barrel?
I shoot rifled slugs out of my rifled barrel They are more accurate than the sabo slugs in my gun and I put them out there it’s cited in for 100 yards
My friend shoots Remington sluggers and federal truball through his rifled 870 12 gauge and gets 3” at 100 yds. He hasn’t had any issues except dead deer.
Do you ever get any fouling in the barrels? Or how often do you clean them?
I clean it once a year. I don't really shoot slug gun for deer. I mostly hunt in rifled areas
Thank you brother! I agree ☝️ TFW
Have you actually had a barrel shoot off? 4:24 or been there when It did? I would think it would cause it to be out of battery and not fire if it wasn’t on right. But I don’t really know. Just my thinking.
also, with a super mag reciever, u can shoot 3 1/2” ammo with the proper barrel. 👍🏼
Yeah it's crazy how much more accurate 20 gauge slugs are.
250yards??? Please stop
Correctly calculated Kentucky windage= being familiar with your firearm..lol.nice video
I'm curious to see how accurate a sabot is through a smooth bore..
I have an 870 with a 20 inch slug barrel with the screw in rifle choke shoot the Brenneke short mag like a rifle at 50 yards very accurate
Who doesn't like an extra 4 inches? Ha-HA! I see what you did there sir!
That’s what she said
Got a MossBerg Mav 88. (24 inches Smooth bore) .Eats everything and give me good results and groups from 25 to 100m.... I love it!
🖖🏻🇫🇷😎🇫🇷😎🇫🇷🖖🏻
Good video. Thank you
I have a Mossberg 535 with rifled barrel an it shoot 100 yards with ease with accuracy an I use the Remington 3” accu tip 1900FPS 385grain an no problems with 100yard accuracy
I love my hastings rifled barrel. Shoots sabots fantastic. It's 24 inch
I thought the sabot would shoot better in the rifled barrel. Maybe try a rifled choke tube on the smooth bore barrel.
Cheap isn't always less. Thx for the vid
BTW, super mag - isn't that a 12/89 - 3½ in.?
First test was at 50 yds.?
Need a scope with the sabots
That’s a good question, I don’t think you would. You’d have a jacketed slug going down a smooth bore.
So did the second one. Just under the right down corner of you right target . on 6:00
My question would be , what if combined with a scope and a bigger distance ? say 250 yards. would it make a difference there maybe ?
Great video... Thank you.
I'm glad you gotta home defense arsenal built up because Ima break into your house and steal that couch.
😂
If you buy a Savage bolt specialized gun most definitely but combos won’t shoot for crap past 75-100 yards
I use rifled slugs only mainly because we can use buckshot to hunt deer down here in Florida so no need for rifled barrels when buckshot is used a lot more than slugs
What happens, besides loss of accuracy, will happen if you shoot these shells out of a smooth bore?
You can do the something with a tank safety
Say Bo, (sabot) - T is silent as in Chevrolet…
To me rifled barrel and Sabot Slugs are worth it to me. I used a smoothbore for many years.
I've been looking for a smooth bore with rifle sights for my Rem 870 and they are nowhere to be found. Sucks.
Look at the wood by the bottom right of the far right target... that's where your miss hit.
My tang safety on all my Mossberg make no noise
What is everyone's go to for sabots for a 870 20 gauge. Just picked up a rifled barrel. I'm limited on sabots. Hornady SST, Winchester BRI, and only 8 shells of Remington accu tip.
Mossberg 88 Rifled barrel 3 inch
Is with every Penny for deep woods
My brush rifle branch breaker.
This influencer is superb
Did you run a choke with the 00 buckshot? I'm assuming you just pull the choke out when firing a slug?
No choke. TFW
I own a 3" magnum 870, and yours looks like a 3 1/2 " magnum. YOUR receiver ejection port looks much longer than mine!
You can get pretty good accuracy with rifled chokes, and they are much cheaper than a rifled barrel.
You shot the bored down to the right you. Can see the hole from the slug appear.
Try a rifled barrel with 100% copper slugs, which is supposed to be good to 150 yards and a 4 inch group or less.
Mine is not a super mag and will still shot 3" says right on it, the super mag will accept 3.5"
"SAY-BOW"
The only reason why you funny guys like to say it your way is because it sounds like "savage"!
You silly "savage"!
It is pronounced the same as the first two syllables of the word "sabotage".
It is nothing like savage. Or as the generals might say Svvv-aggge. Are they tryibg to sabow-targe us?
I shot a deer with 44 mag soft point ( 8" ) & 12 ga Sabot slugs . The result was the same , they ran off with a heart shot & you could not tell they were hit . 75 yds & dropped . I will never use them again . 44mag with HPs ONLY , Much Better . The damage to the deer was the same , 1 clean hole in & out .
I guess the choke doesnt matter?
