At 3:27 he has an obvious flinch.. not surprising shooting 12 gauge slugs. Point is we all flinch a bit. He obviously has mastered it that it occurs after the trigger is pulled. He's right on the money by saying slugs can be very accurate. During qualifications several guys could touch holes on occasion at 50 yards in prone and kneeling positions with an old Remington 870 pump with rifle sights. However, no one seemed to enjoy it like he does.. That said, hitting a target at 230 yards offhand w/slugs is a feat not many could duplicate with consistency. Most impressive. Love the enthusiasm in the snow....

Even though they're much more accurate and can shoot 230 yards when loaded with slugs, a bunch of pistol and rifle fanboys (usually CoD fanboys) hate on shotguns, because when it comes to shotguns, they can only think of shotguns loaded with pellets.

My Remington 870 Express Magnum 20 Ga.with a 21" fully rifled barrel shooting 3" sabot "slugs" is an incredibly effective multipurpose weapon for "varmints." It will drop a 180 lb. Whitetail in it's tracks at 150 yards. With my 20" smooth bore barrel installed shooting various sizes of buckshot is an effective home defense weapon. My 20 Ga. Magnum pump with 2 barrels and a one piece extended 7 round magazine covers the bases really well and my slug barrel has a 2-7x32mm scope. Shooting @230 yds. Is a piece of cake. Since acquiring my Rem. 870 Magnum I have not hunted Whitetails with my 30-30 levergun. I am 71 years old and only hunt whitetails. I do plan to get another 870 20 ga. and shorten the stock, swap out the magazine to a one piece 7 rounder to use as an easily carried self defense weapon that provides excellent "stopping" power. The selling point for me is that all Rem. 870's have a steel reciever. It is my opinion that firearms are made from steel. Not Aluminum Alloy or Polymers.
    I am "Old Scool."

Wow, Sniper Hickok at work !! A 1 oz slug (437.5 grain !!) packs a massive wallop, over NINE times the energy of a 147 grain 9mm (both calculated at exiting the barrel).

Thanks Hickok. I always hold over or under to adjust for range if I need to, but my dad always did like you say and will adjust his sight picture to allow for distance.
This is an older video now, but I'd not seen it yet. Well done and awesome shooting.

Too many people for too long have had it beaten into them that the shotgun is a short range weapon when it comes to anything, hunting, defense etc. When Ithaca brought out the Deerslayer in 1959, they designed it in mind with long range deer hunting out to 100 yards or better. They made it so that it could group the same as a .35 Remington out to 100 yards. I have killed deer with slugs before but not out to extreme ranges. The shotgun I think is the most versatile of long guns especially for those of us who live in the mountains where a long shot is maybe 150 yards or so.

I bought a Barretta 626 12 gauge side by side with a 26 " barrel. I discovered after leaving my regular slug gun at home that it was the best . I took one buck at 85 yards with it. I benched it as a joke one time and at 70 yards with riffed slugs it was in a 6" circle. To me a side by is best in it fire's like a rifle. I'd love to have a 270W side by rifle. I'm not sure I'd put slugs though anything other than a quality shotgun, but I was told that my Barretta has no problem with them . Improved or skeet chokes only and no sabots in a non rifled barrel.

Back in the 80's & 90's my neighbor , a well respected farmer would deer hunt each year and get his deer limit. He said he used slugs only and could bring em down from 150 yrds. Or less on one shot, i liked him alot but thought he bluffing, now i know old mr. Henning was a real marksman.

In lower Michigan the shotgun has been the main weapon for deer hunting until recent years. I have a 12 ga. Mossberg 600akt (simular to the 500) smoothbore shotgun with iron sights. I have shot many deer around the 150-175 yard range on our farm with just plain standard 2 3/4" 1 oz. slugs. The farthest I shot a buck with it was 200 yards. Been hunting since the 1980's. Love iron sights.

Watching this reminded me of our duck hunting trip, which turned into an unbelievable Shotgun slug shot by my dad. We were on our way home from duck hunting and Dad who had better than 20/20 vision and was an avid hunter in northeastern Alberta Canada suddenly stop the car and told us to stay and not make any noise, he loaded the Winchester in the car a 12 gauge with a slug and slowly got out of the car he aimed squeezed off the shot, we couldn't see the deer so we didn't see it fall. He comes back to the car and says we have to go gut and quarter up a deer. He told me later that he put the ball at the end of the barrel on his forehead and raised it about what he thought would be the drop and eased off the shot adding it was pure luck. When we got to the deer he had hit it right between the eyes and we paced it off at 135 paces. When I was a kid I hunted with my Dad as his retriever and many many times he would get 3 ducks with 3 shots.

"Slug play".....I dig it. There needs to be an Olympic event called Slug Play, with events at 100, 200 and 400 meters. Maybe have individual, team and synchronized formats. And maybe an artistic format where you try to shoot a cool pattern.

I shot this heavy steel lid from some kind of box near a railroad track with a .22 - it’d scratch the paint off. Shot it with a 12 gauge slug and it put a huge hole in it. Slugs are crazy powerful.

This is awesome! I started making slugs when ammo went AWOL, all I have now is a few hand guns, a 22lr rifle, a pump shotgun,a bolt action shotgun and quite a few single shots. I'm glad that with practice it's not impossible.i never tryed over 200 because the misconception is don't try it over 100 yards or it won't work.ill have to go shooting some more and try some new stuff!
