The T24a engine is actually quite reliable. It is simply an A25A engine that has thicker cylinder walls, better cooling, and old school variable valve timing. Its actually MORE old school than the 2.5NA A25A engine. So this engine will last. Just because it has a turbo doesn't mean it will break, its just that germans suck at making reliable turbo cars (late alone the korean makers).
More horsepower through 2 less cylinders, a turbo spinning at hundreds of thousands of RPM, a bunch of additional plumbing, electronic controls etc......Toyota has had legendary reliability, but that reputation was largely built on old school, normally aspirated, relatively low hp per cc designs. There's no guarantees, with all this fancy stuff hanging off the motor, and the turbos will likely die long before the engine does.
When you look at the torque output of this engine, the peak cylinder pressures are probably 50% higher than what the old V6 experienced. On top of that they've got to be extra careful about detonation issues, and the turbocharger itself is a major wear item. While I'm sure Toyota has done a ton of long term durability testing, all things being equal, the old NA V6 would probably look better after 10-15 years, if that's your thing.

There are too many new things on this Lexus like rear steer, turbocharging (not going well with the Tundra motor) and lots of unproven tech. I'd give it a few years.

As a TexPat it was great to see what a Lexus RAV4 owner does on his commute from Austin to his Full-Auto-Heli-Russian Boar hunt reservation. You’re real men now. You’ll forever hold that experience over the heads of lesser transplants like S3XY and JRE.
the hybrid system does take a lot of strain off the 4 cylinder used in the 350h, so reliability I don't think will be that much of an issue, but certainly it will sound like crap and not be as smooth or refined feeling in such a big car compared to the outgoing V6 models. I personally think they should have tried to improve the efficiency of the V6 and mated it to the improved hybrid system, best of both worlds, but Lexus now are seriously cost cutting in my opinion and trying to claw back for all the new R&D. I mean charging more for a 4 cylinder hybrid is a bit of a joke quite frankly...
Emissions and efficiency are the driving factors to the changes, not cost cutting. All manufacturers are doing it. Keep in mind that Toyota is closely matching the specs of a past engine which had bigger displacement through hybrid + turbo tech.
Lexus should’ve had you guys test the RX out on some rough streets or on the freeway somewhere with real world traffic. While it's going to continue to be an outstanding flagship vehicle, I'm keeping my gen 4 (2016-2022) RX350 (luxury package) with a naturally aspirated 3.5 V6 engine. But an RX EV might truly be a game changer...
I'm not sure they're going that route any time soon, since they have the RZ in the wings that's based on the BZ4X architecture. The 2GR previous gen that you have will last an eternity if you take care of it, so enjoy to the fullest! I'm doing the same with the IS I just purchased, and am loving the 2GR.
Great work Geese. Lexus has done brilliantly in terms of exterior and interior design with this. The pure petrol will probably be the best bet for longevity. Wonder if the IS will get this treatment at some point, just fear the V6 will be eliminated completely in newer generations of ES and IS.
I really didn't think mark was even going to do a press launch video for this. When I saw it I had a feeling he was going to troll a bit. It's a competent vehicle and it's improves at the things people like Lexus for.
Agreed. I mean this is nice, but I doubt it will hold up anywhere near as well. New tech, new engine, turbo, rear wheel steering. Something is gonna break in this long before the previous gen RX. We shall see tho.
We have a 22 rx with the v6. I’m totally confused by what Toyota is s doing going to a 4 cylinder with turbos. I get almost 30mpg in our car going 74 mph on the interstate. What is the benefit of going to a turbo 4? I am a firm believer that a turbo 4 is gonna have mechanical issues that a V6 will never have.
Two points. The first is fuel economy in the real world doesn’t matter. It’s all about the EPA and meeting CAFE and emissions. The V6 was getting old and couldn’t meet the emission target. 2nd the turbo 4 is going to go 150k+ miles all day long.
@@slscamg yeah, I understand that, I guess it how much pollution is produced by the engine too? Even though I get about the same as the new one is rated , I’m assuming a turbo would burn more of the gasses up and it would technically be cleaner for the environment? I’m not sold on the longevity of turbo 4 cylinders. I know Toyota was one of the first manufacturers to use them years ago, but they have not been using them much lately and have been late to adopt them again. Toyotas are known for their reliability, I just hope it stays that way!
I'm glad Lexus _is_ no longer stuck in the early 2010s. The infotainment is exasperating and I'm glad someone at Toyota determined them to expunge the touchpad tbh. Lexus is getting back in action slowly and I quite like the latest RX + I hope the LS gets more refined and I wish it came with a V8 as it's more essential than the 3.5 electricified V6 optionally offered...
Was considering the 500h in copper and my dealer has one in coming but I couldn’t wait. Leased a 2023 MDX Type S Advance 2-weeks ago. The Lexus is missing massage seats, a third row, Brembo brakes, and air suspension. The MDX has everything, it also has the best stereo in the business (once I ditched their cheap sub and added a powered one). Absolutely love this vehicle… comfort mode is like riding on a cloud and the seats are unmatched.
That INTRO was … just … surreal. Totally freaked me out. Not cool, man, not cool. Spectacular details, production values, and super duper sense of humor, however. Well done, indeed, gentlemen. Well done. : @ )
This will be a huge hit. It looks much better than the previous gen and the infotainment is finally free of the accursed touch pad. I still think Lexus needs a RWD based, unibody crossover like the GLE, GV80, X5, Aviator. Why they refuse to bring an SUV like that to market is maddening. Almost no one needs a body on frame SUV like the GX and LX, though I am glad they exist.
I’m sorry but people who trash this refresh and say that this is a rebranded Toyota need to understand a number of things. 1) It’s not just about looks but also ride quality. This car drives far better than a Toyota like the Venza. It has more personality, quieter, and speaks to you. 2) The engine has more horsepower than any of the Toyota products while giving you A LOT of fuel economy unlike its competitors in this segment. 3) Lexus has a 55% resale value after 5 years due to its engine reliability unlike the Germans who lose so much value just right after you drive out of the dealer. 4) What more do you expect from a car though? To be like the Batmobile? To have Iron Man’s suit capability?
Lose the spelled out Lexus on rear door to start . Looks smaller than 22 model . No V6 for 60K + ? Driven turbo 4 in ES line , Its unrefined compared to BMW . Though its better than Acura’s turbo 4 . Most of buttons are gone, you will have to operate systems by clicking through screens. I don’t care for new RX so I bought the V6 powered 2022 model . Time will tell if Lexus will sell as many as they did with out going model. JMOP
I think those v6 models will hold their value better at least compared to these first year 4 bangers. And time will tell how reliable those are. My guess, less reliable than the v6 by nature of slapping on another part that can break.
When is comes to handling, what I want to know is, when on the interstate and you get run off the road into the center median, do you come safely to a stop or end up on your roof in the apposing lanes.
I’m overwhelmed with I’ll the tech that come with RX but if we compare the ES Lexus with RX what is the difference in riding quality and driving dynamics?
ES 350 V6 is best engine, this one with Turbo cannot hold a candle to that in smoothness & reliability, 300K miles for sure. Get an ES when you can with V6, after 2024 its going to be killed. Only disadvantage of ES is Lexus did not put an AWD Transfer Case in that and no sporty aspect even if you get F-Sport because that car is not designed to be like that. GS which had that sportiness was discontinued, IS is kinda middle but it is compromised heavily in superior comfort that ES offers. And ES feels much more Lexus than trying to fit into the new hyper hybrid over tech riddled nonsense.
As always, great video. I can’t wait till you guys review the rivian R1S. As the plant is In Illinois, hopefully they give you guys a jump ahead the line
In the real world, leasing and other purchase models will have the competition win out vs this I think. They will keep the loyalists but I don't see many new buyers coming in.
Thank you for the video! I believe it has the 6 speed automatic, how does it feel? Smooth gear changes? Do you notice the fewer number of gears compared to many modern automatics?
The new inline six is coming next year on the new Mazda CX-70 and CX-90. They will also be RWD biased. They will probably drive better than the FWD architecture on the new RX honestly.

@@slscamg Yea, and the v6 will go 300k+. The 4 banger is going to be less reliable in the long run.
Yes touch screen only is a trip back to the mid/late 2000s
599K. Congrats on the big 600!! Well deserved!
Can you remove the 3rd row in the MDX? That's one of my gripes.
@@MadLadsAnonymous You can remove the second row console, NOT the 3rd row seating.
600k and climbing
Way to go Mr. Goose!
PS : this was a fun one to watch 😄
That INTRO was … just … surreal. Totally freaked me out. Not cool, man, not cool.
Spectacular details, production values, and super duper sense of humor, however. Well done, indeed, gentlemen. Well done. : @ )
So new Rx 4turbo, premium or regular fuel? I suspect premium.
I LOVE THE INTRO!!!!!!
liked, commented and subscribed for the algorithm!
Looking forward to your full review and you are the only one who compared it to NX. Great job as always👍
Apparently that may be the TX. We have to wait and see though.
@@koichi.k1161 no the tx won’t be RWD. It’ll be based off the grand highlander which is fwd
If you want a rwd lexus crossover get a genesis
@@naveenthemachine Right, GV80 is the Lexus Lexus is too lazy to build.
@@Seriously140 exactly. If you want a RWD Lexus crossover buy the genesis.
I was Lexus review 'drunk' by the end of this video, the content is that strong!
I just loved the intro. You guys are so damn snarky.
Still the best auto channel on the toob.
RE #3) My guess is these won't have as much resale value due to the turbo on a small displacement engine. We'll see tho.
what was that bit in the beginning before "interior impressions" with the couple having dinner & then him in the ER, etc..? i'm confused.
I think it was referring to the end of the V6...
JMOP
Exactly. I just bought a 2022 as well.
Where do you live to have driven the 2.4 turbo in the ES?
I think those v6 models will hold their value better at least compared to these first year 4 bangers. And time will tell how reliable those are. My guess, less reliable than the v6 by nature of slapping on another part that can break.
Great review guys and fantastic country music at the start! Do you know if the new 500h has a towing capacity commensurate with the outgoing rx450h?
If you had to pick between the 2023 NX 350H or 2023 RX 350H?
How does the smaller i4 feel and sound in the 500h?
Off topic I'm looking at to purchase Gt 350 and have heard they have real bad engine issues. Do you know anything about it. Thanks
When is comes to handling, what I want to know is, when on the interstate and you get run off the road into the center median, do you come safely to a stop or end up on your roof in the apposing lanes.
I've always loved the RX. This one looks great
Looks like Lexus is finally getting back on track after a decade in the wilderness.
Nah 😂
They are still way behind Lincoln Acura and genesis. They barely beat infiniti but that’s a low bar
@@naveenthemachine "Getting" is the key word - it indicates relative improvement, not absolute position in the market.
@@andoletube I've seen this guy before, he's a troll so ignore him, and Lexus' new infotainment is literally better than Acura's touchpad
Well you guys inspire me,, just got my RX350 premium plus last night::: I must say I’m static about it 👍😎👌
Well, that went dark at 0:40.
That color is freakin beautiful...
I was looking for this comment. It seriously blew me away.
How do you clean that suede like material on the doors and seats?
Can you please review the new C300 Mercedes and probably compare it with BMW 330i M Sport?
3:34 and on points to a closable shade on that pano roof, bonus in my book
Acoustic glass - is that for the RX500 only? Or is it also on the RX350?
Upper trim 350s as well.
The music at 5:03 sounds like the opening scenes of a early 2000s college humor movie like when the kids are walking to class.
What’s the pricing look like for new trims
that color is amazing 😍
Best intro ever.
Nice review! Whats up with that grille/front fascia?
It’s smooth enough to keep my brain smooth
That's one helluva intro
Any word on why the 500H gets only the 6-speed transmission? The base engine gets an 8-speed.
Alex on Autos addressed this in his video, at around the 6:30 mark.
Intro 10/10
Waiting eagerly for your RX 500h full review.
Thanks, looking forward to the full review.
Mark, did you get that "WOW!" feeling driving on the ocean shores (or bottom)?
In the real world, leasing and other purchase models will have the competition win out vs this I think.
They will keep the loyalists but I don't see many new buyers coming in.
So is it smooth enough? I'm not sure you addressed the point directly.
Love your work.
wait, does the start-stop engine button change between 4:39 and 4:41? are those clips from different cars?
Different trim levels
I really like the fact it comes with a RTX reference card on the center console
Thank you for the video! I believe it has the 6 speed automatic, how does it feel? Smooth gear changes? Do you notice the fewer number of gears compared to many modern automatics?
Thank you for this channel.
That is all.
So Toyota killed six cylinders at the same time as Mazda introduced two different 6-cylinder engines (gasoline and diesel).
Strange
You do realize they have that 6 cylinder in the trucks right? It ain't dead.
Where are the Mazda 6 cylinder engines?
@@baronvonjo1929 six cylinders that have to use two turbos just to do a job a V8 can already do
Still no sight of the Mazda 6 cyl you got me excited :(
The new inline six is coming next year on the new Mazda CX-70 and CX-90. They will also be RWD biased. They will probably drive better than the FWD architecture on the new RX honestly.
