You cannot know and should not believe that what I present as a fact actually is true unless I show it to you or at least properly argue the case. It is therefore important to not just state facts but to also show that the things are actually true.

I think that's one of the greatest challenges in modern science. People believe they are very rational, but they are actually deeply biased. Science communicators, on the other hand, are well aware of this, and yet the information they present to the audience is often full of facts but far from influential. I've been trying to wrap my head around a solution to problems like the anti-vaccination issue by thinking up making a course about critical thinking (through my master's study in health education), but I'm of course not sure how effective that approach is. I feel like concepts of critical thinking would be difficult to adopt unless the whole culture changes with it. And ugh, given what has been going on in the US for the past 2 years, I'm thinking that making a course about how to effectively communicate critical thought would be necessary as well since nobody seems to know what's true anymore...science or politics.
But has it really changed? Probably not, they just go into survival mode. The chances are when the gun is gone and the fear has faded away they even fortify their original opinion.

Telling someone to change their political opinion is equivalent to telling to them to change their religion. There has been research done that shows that the same areas of the brain respond when talking about religion and politics.

If an "opinion" can be disproved by facts... it isn't an opinion it's someone being ignorant. An opinion is a favourite colour or a good movie you like. Not, if the world is flat.
Do you think facts are objectively knowable? Even when there is an objective truth getting to it can be very hard. And in that room for error is where opinions exist. Especially for things involving social factors or biology finding what is true is a huge challenge, studies often disagree with each other and each person starts with a different set of data to base their opinions on. Where do you get your facts from? How are you certain you’re right?

I actually found an extremely good method of persuasion. All you do is wait for the other person to finish speaking, then pull out a gun and tell them to explain more

Another good way to put it is if the person's goal is to be "right" or simply to find an objective truth. The latter uses critical thinking and listening skills, which are unfortunately not natural to the average human mind.
Every time I've seen anyone say open-minded or close-minded they have always meant "believe what I believe". If you tell a Wiccan you don't believe in healing crystals because there is zero evidence for them they will tell you you are being close-minded.

This is not just so we can better communicate with those who aren't seeing the entire picture yet, but also to leave room for the chance for us to discover something potentially remarkable. I remember Neil DeGrasse Tyson said that instead of initially shutting out the credence of things like healing crystals, he said to be authentically curious. He said that instead, ask questions like what exactly are the crystals made out of, where do they come from, is there some sort of electromagnetic radiation if any may be coming from them, what kind of evidence is there for them so far, etc.

I have already gone through the experience of having baseless opinions though, I had a few friends who were politically active and I liked discussing things, so I joined, but I quickly got indoctrinated in certain opinions, with filters, but not enough. Once I realized this, I quit the group and decided that I needed to learn more about these things before having an opinion. The problems we discussed and were supposed to have an opinion on, were really too complex without years and years of experience and study. When confronted with a person that has a different opinion than you, simply ask the person to explain why they believe what they believe. You know, actually listening to people before jumping to the conclusion that you know all of it and are absolutely right in the thing you're discussing. Believing that you can be wrong and wanting to know more about what the person you're talking to thinks, is the way to avoid becoming the ignorant one. And unless you understand where their reasoning is wrong, how can you get them to understand? Are you really just going to repeat the generic propaganda that you usually come up with from your group think? I expect that I still have false beliefs, and try to watch out for opportunities to learn more from others that I talk about? I put questions in their minds. I spent about an hour each with a few mormons that approached me about god. I then managed to have them question their beliefs. I've given people who dislike capitalism an understanding of what it is, and made them question if it's such a bad thing. How? I asked them and waited for them to ask me. When I was younger, I asked my teacher about global warming. He wasn't able to answer me, because he didn't understand it. Yet he said he did and basically hinted at the fact that you're a bad person if you don't. Thus I concluded, he is stupid and I won't listen to him. Until a few years later, I didn't believe in the CO2 global warming theory, because all I heard was explanations from people who didn't understand it. Whenever I would question it, I would be labeled as a science denier. But hey, I didn't understand it, and questioning it is how you learn, right? So for those years, I thought it was just political, because that's how it seemed. Scientists aren't immune to politics, especially if there is financial support behind one outcome. Now, I am unsure about it, and that's fine for me, until I take some time to understand it. In this case, I leave it to those that study it in depth. I no longer question anyone to learn, and I've been put off from learning about it. It's probably one of those things I have a bias towards. But the reason why my beliefs were muddled, was because of all the people spreading the gospel of global warming without knowing shit. Please don't be that person.
The problem with your approach is that it requires a level of intelligence that most people don't have. Do some research on the effects of intelligence on capabilities of humans. For many people of your intelligence it is hard to even imagine what kind of seemingly simple tasks the majority of people people fail doing. But likely you are already aware of it and know the frustration that comes with people around you not being able to grasp concepts that appear extremely simple to you.
'Do you ever get in an argument where you know you're right?' If you answered yes, there's your problem. All of us, as a society, need to realize that there is no 100% guarantee that we are correct. We ALL need to go into debates with the willingness to be convinced when sufficient evidence & arguments are provide, and the desire to believe what is true, not just to defeat our interlocutor.

Because echo chambers are irrelevant to whether or not you can change someone's opinion in an argument. If anything, breaking someone's echo chamber is extremely effective in an argument.

I don't even argue with other people. I just shrug it off, forget about, because there's no point trying to change someone's opinion when all they do is plug they're ears and sing out loud to overlap my explanation. But if I do end up in an argument, I HOPE the person I'm talking with is actually open to having their opinions changed as I am.
I think facts change my opinion often. When I don't know something and it's important I look up the research. Yes it might take longer to change my mind if I felt strongly about it before.

Personally, I'd say the best way to change someone's mind is to cannibalize their logic, use their reasoning to reach a logical but definitely incorrect conclusion. The best way to teach someone something to to make them realize they already knew the answer, but just weren't putting the pieces together the right way before.

I've been trying to become less bullheaded by watching people with different political views than me. It's been a kinda nice experience. It helps me understand why someone would think that way, and humanize people I was so opposed to.

Yeah, people have different opinions, sure. But representing that as two separated valid ways to think is stupid. Usually (or at least often) there's only two types of opinions; you can basically be either right or wrong. For example, people that thinks the earth is flat. That's either true or false, but you can't find a common and related point.

There is so much evidence that the Earth is round that it baffles me and many others that some can still believe it is flat. However, your blanket statement stating that there is always going to be right or wrong is simply untrue. Many moral ideas such as opinions on abortion, the death penalty, gun control etc. are all different types of discussions where both sides of an argument have completely valid points and there simply is no right or wrong, at least not that humans can comprehend at this moment. In saying that, I do agree that for some topics like your mentioned one on the earth it is hard to find common ground. But I suppose there are still ways to get around it. 15 years ago, people didn't act like they currently do. It seems people from ages 0-35 have trouble with the idea they might be wrong. A lot more so than older people. Is it people in general or just millennials?
Im used to older people being more stuck in their opinions. But every person thinks, for every opinion they believe in, that they are right. And it is an achievement to convince someone they are wrong, a bigger achievement to let yourself be convinced.
Not entirely I think it’s the older generations that have trouble with being wrong, so they deflect the blame onto millennial for not believing in racism, homophobia, and sexism like they did growing up. They’ll trash on everything to our music to being on our phones. Times are changing and the older generations tend to because very offended if the ideals don’t match up. Also facts are rarely used with their logic.
There isn't really one fact that completely disproves an opinion though. You may state a fact that supports climate change and I could come up with a fact that contradicts yours. It's just which side of "facts" you support more which decides you opinion.

I actually found an extremely good method of persuasion. All you do is wait for the other person to finish speaking, then pull out a gun and tell them to explain more
- stay away from the reasons they believe something, and instead find another common motive to convince them
- try to be friendly, respect their opinions, and let them know your in “their group” too
It's only possible if the person isn't close-minded.
Another good way to put it is if the person's goal is to be "right" or simply to find an objective truth. The latter uses critical thinking and listening skills, which are unfortunately not natural to the average human mind.
Every time I've seen anyone say open-minded or close-minded they have always meant "believe what I believe". If you tell a Wiccan you don't believe in healing crystals because there is zero evidence for them they will tell you you are being close-minded.

@FlyingFree333: To kind of jump off of where AIL was saying, I believe that an important step also involves being able to see the potential for bias within our own selves as well. This is not just so we can better communicate with those who aren't seeing the entire picture yet, but also to leave room for the chance for us to discover something potentially remarkable. I remember Neil DeGrasse Tyson said that instead of initially shutting out the credence of things like healing crystals, he said to be authentically curious. He said that instead, ask questions like what exactly are the crystals made out of, where do they come from, is there some sort of electromagnetic radiation if any may be coming from them, what kind of evidence is there for them so far, etc.
Best way to win an argument is don't get into one.

A computer is a much more complex thing, but in VERY general terms, a processor can take input that comes as a series of current and no current and through using semi conductors, you're able to do logical operations on that information. This means you're able to add and subtract things, true and false operators etc. If anyone were to actually read this, I could go on with how you find memory and layers of abstractions of computer languages and how representation of colors, letters, numbers, internet communication work through convention. But that would take more time than I'm willing to spend now. I don't know any details, because knowing details require more studies than I have done.
I have already gone through the experience of having baseless opinions though, I had a few friends who were politically active and I liked discussing things, so I joined, but I quickly got indoctrinated in certain opinions, with filters, but not enough. Once I realized this, I quit the group and decided that I needed to learn more about these things before having an opinion. The problems we discussed and were supposed to have an opinion on, were really too complex without years and years of experience and study.
When confronted with a person that has a different opinion than you, simply ask the person to explain why they believe what they believe. You know, actually listening to people before jumping to the conclusion that you know all of it and are absolutely right in the thing you're discussing. Believing that you can be wrong and wanting to know more about what the person you're talking to thinks, is the way to avoid becoming the ignorant one. And unless you understand where their reasoning is wrong, how can you get them to understand? Are you really just going to repeat the generic propaganda that you usually come up with from your group think? I expect that I still have false beliefs, and try to watch out for opportunities to learn more from others that I talk about? I put questions in their minds. I spent about an hour each with a few mormons that approached me about god. I then managed to have them question their beliefs. I've given people who dislike capitalism an understanding of what it is, and made them question if it's such a bad thing. How? I asked them and waited for them to ask me.
When I was younger, I asked my teacher about global warming. He wasn't able to answer me, because he didn't understand it. Yet he said he did and basically hinted at the fact that you're a bad person if you don't. Thus I concluded, he is stupid and I won't listen to him. Until a few years later, I didn't believe in the CO2 global warming theory, because all I heard was explanations from people who didn't understand it. Whenever I would question it, I would be labeled as a science denier. But hey, I didn't understand it, and questioning it is how you learn, right? So for those years, I thought it was just political, because that's how it seemed. Scientists aren't immune to politics, especially if there is financial support behind one outcome. Now, I am unsure about it, and that's fine for me, until I take some time to understand it. In this case, I leave it to those that study it in depth. I no longer question anyone to learn, and I've been put off from learning about it. It's probably one of those things I have a bias towards.
But the reason why my beliefs were muddled, was because of all the people spreading the gospel of global warming without knowing shit. Please don't be that person.

The problem with your approach is that it requires a level of intelligence that most people don't have. Do some research on the effects of intelligence on capabilities of humans. For many people of your intelligence it is hard to even imagine what kind of seemingly simple tasks the majority of people people fail doing.
But likely you are already aware of it and know the frustration that comes with people around you not being able to grasp concepts that appear extremely simple to you.

I don't even argue with other people. I just shrug it off, forget about, because there's no point trying to change someone's opinion when all they do is plug they're ears and sing out loud to overlap my explanation. But if I do end up in an argument, I HOPE the person I'm talking with is actually open to having their opinions changed as I am.
I think facts change my opinion often. When I don't know something and it's important I look up the research. Yes it might take longer to change my mind if I felt strongly about it before.

Personally, I'd say the best way to change someone's mind is to cannibalize their logic, use their reasoning to reach a logical but definitely incorrect conclusion. The best way to teach someone something to to make them realize they already knew the answer, but just weren't putting the pieces together the right way before.

I've had my opinion changed on things when I've read into the facts. I have some very strong opinions on certain things, but I've also evolved and modified my knowledge and opinions once I've learned more about certain topics. I don't think that it's impossible.

Yeah, people have different opinions, sure. But representing that as two separated valid ways to think is stupid. Usually (or at least often) there's only two types of opinions; you can basically be either right or wrong. For example, people that thinks the earth is flat. That's either true or false, but you can't find a common and related point.
Sr. Solowinski Bravo the example you have described is a case where it should in fact be open and shut. There is so much evidence that the Earth is round that it baffles me and many others that some can still believe it is flat.
However, your blanket statement stating that there is always going to be right or wrong is simply untrue. Many moral ideas such as opinions on abortion, the death penalty, gun control etc. are all different types of discussions where both sides of an argument have completely valid points and there simply is no right or wrong, at least not that humans can comprehend at this moment.
In saying that, I do agree that for some topics like your mentioned one on the earth it is hard to find common ground. But I suppose there are still ways to get around it. I'm not smart enough to think of any though haha. Anyway, thanks for your time :)

Im used to older people being more stuck in their opinions. But every person thinks, for every opinion they believe in, that they are right. And it is an achievement to convince someone they are wrong, a bigger achievement to let yourself be convinced.
Not entirely I think it’s the older generations that have trouble with being wrong, so they deflect the blame onto millennial for not believing in racism, homophobia, and sexism like they did growing up. They’ll trash on everything to our music to being on our phones. Times are changing and the older generations tend to because very offended if the ideals don’t match up.

There isn't really one fact that completely disproves an opinion though. You may state a fact that supports climate change and I could come up with a fact that contradicts yours. It's just which side of "facts" you support more which decides you opinion.
There are no facts that contradict climate change, there are just deniers who misread studies, lie about facts or mindlessly repeat crap from denialist blogs without ever verifying anything. Trace back to the original source any 'fact' any denialist claims disproves climate change you will find out it's not actually a fact.
