I had Toyota Altezza with 3sge engine. I fitted in main HKS manifold 4-1 , APEXI power intake, single mass fly wheel and I was more than happy with the motor.
In the UK we usually junk the beams engine for a 1jz. Have an Altezza on my channel with one. Regardless this will be a cool refreshing swap in a Celica can't wait to see the results thanks for the upload
3SGE Beams engine is a great choice, a mate and I did the same swap on his (Aus) IS200/Altezza. Was quite a bit of fun to do and it turned out great! Very nice to drive now :) The next step is to get some boost into it!
wow I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for updates on this build. I was really hoping you guys would go with a 1J or 2J but the 3SGE is definitely pretty interesting and different from the usual stuff out there. awesome guys!
So weird...my phone has not been notifying me of my subscribed channels uploading videos, so I just searched your channel to see if anything had been uploaded today, and it looks like it just was. Am I a fan?...I think I'm a fan..
I really like the choice of the motor, keeping the original spirit, I remember videos of Celicas rallying against mk2 Escort etc and those sounded so angry exiting a curve wide open juice. About the compression glad that all 4 cylinders are okay, a friend of mine changed an engine a few years back, the compressions were so low it sounded like a snapped timing belt with no compression at all. It took a few minutes to start the thing but then it was good and runing strong. Honestly I didn't expect an episode about the Celica this soon but it was a good surprise !
+Speed Academy Yep, winter slows down everything indeed, and wrenching when it's cold, the tools, ten layers of clothes and everything it's not that funny after all, here in Europe we've been lucky so far with warm and unsual temperatures for the season but cold is coming too (it won't be as cold as the temperature you have in canada though :D)
Looks like 360p is the only quality available at the moment also, not sure if the others are slowly updated later, or if it's required to re-upload. Also, what a wonderful motor choice. The BEAMS is such a cool engine, I love the fact you kept it unique and original with a somewhat obscure motor. I've got a 1992 MR2 SW20 with the 3SGTE and it's a wonderful motor, Yamaha did a great job. However, I love that you now have a NA motor with over 100hp per liter, impressive stuff for the 90s. Following this build closely, keep up the good work guys.
Awesome engine choice the BEAMS engine from RS200 is different than the common choice of picking a 2jz, I have never pay attention to the BEAMS engine can not wait to see the type parts you doing for you build
Woohoo!!!!! So glad to see Dave went with BEAMS power. And talk about affordable; 207 hp and a RWD 6 speed for ~$920 US is damn good. Really looking forward to seeing this in the engine bay!
These engines should test 178psi in each cyldinder at 250rpm. I am a bit worried you are covering up the bad piston rings with oil so you are getting crap readings. Min pressure according to toyota is 142psi with no more than 14psi difference across all cylinders, so your readings of 200 are most likely blown up because of the oil you added. It would be good to do a test once you get it in the car, run for a little so the walls are cleaned up and then test again. Also how in the world do you have time to post so many videos haha
Yup, we will definitely do a dry compression test once the engine is in and running. Just didn't feel comfortable cranking it cold and dry given its been sitting for months.
Sucks to hear you had a bad experience there. Seems like for every JDM importer, I know someone with a bad experience connected to them. I guess I've been lucky over the years, as I've bought a bunch of JDM engines from 4 or 5 different importers and so far so good.
Then dont compression test, if you are not going to get true values so its a waste of time/effort. Leak down test would have made more sense to me. Just my opinion.
Well, I wouldn't tell, that this compression test was accurate because of oil you put in cylinders... I did same hoping my cylinder #1 was not bad, and yeah, I got huge number after filling cylinder with some oil, BUT I couldn't believe the difference with oil and no oil tests - so I removed head, took off piston and found a broken ring. So the piston with broken ring compression = 174 PSI Same piston with broken ring + some oil = 230 PSI Anyway, love your channel!
+Aurimas Kiseliovas I share your concern. I'm going to do a leak down test and retest compression with no oil in the cylinders and see what we get. I don't expect there to be a problem, but I want to be as thorough as possible before installing it.
Oh my god yes!! finally some one doing something with a 3sge! Are you going to go turbo, Itb's or keep it stock? I cant wait to see more videos of it! Check out the Toms 280t its a cool little turbo package they did for these engines back in 1999.
Hello. Love your Celica. Been following this build since the beginning. haven't missed a episode. the RA24 is one of my top tree favourite cars of all time. I have a 74' TE27 SR5 Corolla. Was wondering if you have a suggestion for some where I could get a replacement fuel tank for it that I could buy.
funny i wanted a rust free old Japanese car from phoenix, so i flew out there with my girlfriend and bought a 1977 corolla station wagon and drove it back. After rust proofing it i am looking into what engine i could swap to make it a fun sleeper. Really don't want to destroy the body cutting it up to fit a huge motor and this looks like the 3sge might be a viable option.
I love the engine choice! I agree it's the right direction for this project Dave! I've had RWD Celicas and always wanted to try the BEAMS setup. How about the rear suspension, what are you doing there?
+Jeff Loker haven't quite decided yet on the rear end. Might do a MA46 swap to get the bigger 7.5 rear end, or maybe a AE86 GTS complete rear axle w/ LSD, or even just refreshing the Celica rear end and converting it to AE86 rear discs is a decent option to get it rolling.
+Binghamton Winabagel Such a great point, totally forgot about that when we did the test. I'm disappointed in myself actually because I never forget that!
So thats a N/A, 2Liter, 4 cylinder from an Altezza making 200hp, here in europe we got a 2 Liter, 6 cylinder Lexus in the same body making 160hp :/ Damn that dual vvti must be awesome! Sweet engine, great choice for the celica!
I really hope you guys add some crazy looking race headers,a light weight flywheel, some higher duration cams, and maybe even itb's to complement the motor although I don't know how much more room there is for easy tuning seeing as the engine already does 100hp/L
Have you decided on engine management yet? I'm Really wanting to try the AEM EMS-4 with a large drive by wire throttle body. I was just going to use the Toyota ECM, but I decided I want to be able to do more tuning, as I may eventually go turbo with it too. Not too mention, the Toyota ECM will be looking for the ABS/VSC system, and the 110mph speed limiter.
Will most likely go with an AEM EMS2 tweaked by Panic Wire, though I'm also considering a Link standalone as well. Interesting idea to try an EMS-4 with a DBW TB. Are you using a Blacktop with dual VVTi?
Oh and I'm a full time Lexus master technician... drive by wire is all I really work with anymore. It's not as complicated as it seems, if you've got a control unit that can utilize it.
Hey this is Mustafa watching from UAE( dubai) i really like your channel it is very informative, where i live u can get a clean medium millage 2JZGTE-VVTi +4 speed auto tranny+ ecu and harness+ full real end + shaft + fuel return line for ONLY 1100$ !!! Isnt that cool
hey guys, not a massive criticism, but when you do compression test, shouldn't you have the throttle opened? (I know that with an e-throttle it will be more difficult)
+bazoots187 I spent a month on the south island in NZ. Amazing driving roads! Driving up the west coast from Invercargill to Nelson was amazing and the Fiordlands blew my mind. Hanging out with penguins. No big deal, right? ;)
+Enrique Alvarez I know there's a difference. Typically if you see low compression and you add oil to that cylinder and you see compression come up by 40psi or more, you've got a ring problem. But in our case, because I didn't put the same amount of oil in the #3 cylinder as the others, the original test was off. Once I put the same amount in #3 as the other cylinders, the numbers were even across all 4 cylinders, so I think we're ok, but I am going to do a leak down test and a dry compression test in a few days to confirm.
U do know oil helps seal bad rings right? When u get low compression numbers you put some oil down in the cly and if the numbers come up it means u have bad rings if it doesnt cone up it means u have bad valves or a cracked head. Not saying u have bad rings but u prob got a improper reading by putting oil in the clys. The 150psi is more then likely what u really have for compression numbers.
Serious/possibly stupid question: What do you do when a part goes out on a 100% import motor? - concerned guy researching engine swaps for his Toyota truck.
Hey thanks again. I had no idea about battlegarage. You're doing good things with these videos/replies. I understand why you went BEAMS when I go engine hunting and see the prices...
+Dennis Paul haha, not commuting in this car, just going to take it for weekend rips and to the race track. Going to get Coach Riley to teach me how to drift like a boss.
Hey guys, I'm having problems with my Civic Si transmission. It grinds whenever it goes into 4th and sometimes when going into reverse. Do you know of any reasonable shop that can fix this problem aroun Mississauga/Brampton and also install a new clutch and flywheel. I don't want to spend tooooo much, but I do know this is a costly job. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!
holly fuck u guys were across the street from my project car. if u look on the other side there is a garage thats where my car is its a 1994 jzs147 gs300 im getting ready to put a 1j into!
+kaw law yup, we're in the GTA, kinda. Pete lives downtown and I (Dave) live out in the Hammer. We are thinking about holding a track at TMP this summer as a Speed Academy meet. Or maybe a Drive-In Movie night in Oakville.
+Patrice Murfene ya, TRD built a 280-hp version, too. Big cams, ported head, long tube racing header, ITBs, the whole nine yards. Maybe we'll do something similar.
haha ya pronounce celica perfectly !!!!! now ya gota get that engine in and running before 30 days, so ya can do another comp test, after running :D at least now ya know your valves are sealing :D a few mods, like itbs with trumpets and a killer set of headers and ecu with cam control, ya can pull some nice numbers around 240hp to the tyres !!!! then have s2000, celica ITB WOT BATTLE !!!!!!!
A B-series motor for over a grand? B-series are dirt cheap if you know where to look. You can even pull a K24a2 out of a totaled TSX for less than 300 bucks in good condition, but that is not including the transmission.
this is the most underrated channel ever... these guys deserve way more subscribers! keep up the good job
+youngjatt50 They have defiantly been gaining subs fast. think i subbed when they had 20k.
I had Toyota Altezza with 3sge engine. I fitted in main HKS manifold 4-1 , APEXI power intake, single mass fly wheel and I was more than happy with the motor.
You guys make great arguments for your engine choice. Also, the rarity of that engine makes it doubly cool. Can't wait to hear her NA sound.
In the UK we usually junk the beams engine for a 1jz. Have an Altezza on my channel with one. Regardless this will be a cool refreshing swap in a Celica can't wait to see the results thanks for the upload
+MONKY LONDON that's because an altezza is 1000lbs heavier than this car, it'll be fast.
+zum no shit...
GT WING what a mature response.
+zum What a useless statement
+zum Monky london doesn't need your reassurance, he knows what he's doing.
3SGE Beams engine is a great choice, a mate and I did the same swap on his (Aus) IS200/Altezza.
Was quite a bit of fun to do and it turned out great! Very nice to drive now :)
The next step is to get some boost into it!

+Frozen Pete We're going to try to keep up with this project as much as possible but winter is here so it makes it hard to wrench on anything haha.
Dave's sad face after the low compression reading on cylinder 3 is priceless hahaha

I am watching about 20 minutes since it was uploaded and it's playing in hd now
High comp 3sge ..Perfect engine.
Can already tell this is a tasteful build.
Best engine choice! Give it one it deserves!
Cannot wait for seeing it all mocked up!
YESSSSS Im so happy you're using the BEAMS!!!!
The way you guys pronounce celica drives me crazy
+John Rodd can we still be friends?
Boost that engine and I'll think about it
Doesn't annoy me because that's how literally everyone says it over here in the UK
+John Rodd In Australia we pronounce it the same way must be an american thing to pronounce like silly car
+kyle de man yeah it's sir-lee-ca not sell-i-ker these guys say it right 😅✌✌
Can't wait to see this build!
You guys are banging gears and banging out the videos
love you guys!this classic jdm celica is going to be awesome
Awesome engine choice the BEAMS engine from RS200 is different than the common choice of picking a 2jz, I have never pay attention to the BEAMS engine can not wait to see the type parts you doing for you build
thank god. bringing some recognition to the 3S! such a great motor. love mone
I seriously love your channel
+mitsuralli21 Thank you!
Woohoo!!!!!
So glad to see Dave went with BEAMS power. And talk about affordable; 207 hp and a RWD 6 speed for ~$920 US is damn good.
Really looking forward to seeing this in the engine bay!
+NCD2294 It's crazy how cheap the engine and trans are!!
Finally a 3S build! I'm so hyped.
This build is going to be AWESOME !
I would have love to see an F20 in this Celica but i'm good with a good little N/A 3SGE ! ;)
I knew you we're going to pick that engine. Good choice in picking a monster.
high reving toyota engines are probably the best sounding four bangers in the world
Hondas?
+jcwat even as a Honda owner myself I can affirmably say that high revving toyota engines generally have a better induction note.
+Ethanmeister ok then good to know. I have a 95 accord and 05 integra so I might have been biased lol
+Ethanmeister But the vtec transition though. Beats VVTi sound.
+Ethanmeister sorry to hear that your miata got stolen by a Mexican hairstylist
Great channel and top quality content.
A little off topic, but give us a nice overview of the Miata in the background. Thanks!
+NB8393 the Miata belongs to a friend. Ken's installing a turbo kit and doing the fender flares for him.
perfect!!! love that you stuck with a Toyota 4
currently swapping a beams into my starion. Good luck to you.
Great video and hope to see more, have same Celica and been wondering on what engine to put inside and what not!
+jon pastel Thanks! We've got more videos coming.
excellent engine choice, also cool that you're using ae86 parts!

Thank sucks big time. If they did give a 30day warranty then return?
+Beautech Gonna be a little oil in there during normal operation anyway, don't want to run them bone dry if its been sitting for months
Then dont compression test, if you are not going to get true values so its a waste of time/effort. Leak down test would have made more sense to me. Just my opinion.
*Puts pants down, presses Play* UUH YEAAAH
😅
+MONKY LONDON OMG dude, you watch speed academy too! thats awesome! can't wait to see more drift diaries!
+Burt Welkerns yeah dude love this channel, I wish I was better on the spanners. I'll stick to attempting to drive lol
The beginning of the video is what heaven looks like for car guys.
Very cool, been waiting for more of your guys' videos. :)
Well, I wouldn't tell, that this compression test was accurate because of oil you put in cylinders...

+Connor Rix thinking ITBs but there are some nice turbo options and the Blitz supercharger is tempting too.
congrats on 40k guys!
are guys planning on changing out the clutch and stuff while the motor is out? seems to be the best ti.e to do it.
+itsToon definitely!
ITB build on the 3sge!
+Frankie G YES
Thats awesome guys! My brother will be doing an engine swap on his e30 because the one thats on is wrecked and will die soon.
funny i wanted a rust free old Japanese car from phoenix, so i flew out there with my girlfriend and bought a 1977 corolla station wagon and drove it back. in the previous video you mentioned getting a beams 3sge dual vvti.
More Celica vids! Pretty please
Beams are great motors thank goodness you kept it Toyota
3sge beams came in the audm 90ish celica. 3sgte would have been my pick, but i like.
Glad you chose the beams and not some stupid shit like a 6 cylinder, good job
nice choice guys!
Maaaaan, I miss my Celica.
Open the throttle blade when cranking for compression test. The cylinders will come up a lot faster that way.
+Binghamton Winabagel Such a great point, totally forgot about that when we did the test. I'm disappointed in myself actually because I never forget that!
"Beams anything" Like I said! Great choice :)
im guessing you're gonna be keeping this as a street car?
im already loving this build
Street legal for sure, but it'll go to the track too. Gotta do some time attack and drifting in it.
A 2jz or a rb26 would have been very nice.I don't know if the rb fits correctly.
So thats a N/A, 2Liter, 4 cylinder from an Altezza making 200hp, here in europe we got a 2 Liter, 6 cylinder Lexus in the same body making 160hp :/ Damn that dual vvti must be awesome! Sweet engine, great choice for the celica!
really cant wait for this! ITBs im guessing?
+Tanner mos def!
I really hope you guys add some crazy looking race headers,a light weight flywheel, some higher duration cams, and maybe even itb's to complement the motor although I don't know how much more room there is for easy tuning seeing as the engine already does 100hp/L
+theafroninja can you say 4AGE 20v Blacktop ITBs? We can :D TRD race headers? Yes, please. Lots of cool options for this motor!
+Speed Academy haha awesome. I can already see this is going to be one yota' with attitude!
I have a 2002 celica gts, with the 6 speed and the first factory body kit. only 37000 miles
I picked up a 1981 Toyota Starlet that I'm putting a BEAMS 3SGE in. Watching this build.
+Jason Anderson cool car, congrats!
Yes sir. Abundant and cheap... and an inline 6, and the 2GR V6 wouldn't even fit if I wanted to put them in there.
Oh and I'm a full time Lexus master technician... drive by wire is all I really work with anymore. It's not as complicated as it seems, if you've got a control unit that can utilize it.
Good place got my motor from them very happy good price and friendly.
+Mustafa Nabil wow, that's incredibly cheap! 2J everything at that price! haha!
150 psi "dry" for a high compression motor is pretty low... on a side note put ITBs :)
hey guys, not a massive criticism, but when you do compression test, shouldn't you have the throttle opened?
(I know that with an e-throttle it will be more difficult)
awesome guys!
I can see alot of people moaning but a rev happy beams engine in a light old celica is perfect!!
Nice choice! Now restock on some sticker packs, thanks :)
+Roy Mariñas haha, in the process of doing exactly that!
YES! YES! YES! Woo great stuff!!! :D
great engine with 6speed, we've a ton of altezzas on the road he in NZ
+bazoots187 I spent a month on the south island in NZ. Amazing driving roads! Driving up the west coast from Invercargill to Nelson was amazing and the Fiordlands blew my mind. Hanging out with penguins. No big deal, right? ;)
Was there last May, drove from blenheim to queen's Town, gorgeous drive😁
Yall guys are badass that is all
7mgte its a semi bolt on swap or a 22rte its really bolt on and its kinda nostalgic
3SGE beams sound awesome.
There is a difference between a wet compression test and dry compression test. That engine seems to have low compression.
The 2J shown at 1:01 is the one I bought from them a week ago. Now it's youtube famous before I could even make a video about it.
+Aetoc Haha very cool! What are you putting it in?
+Speed Academy it's going in my R34 (gtt, not gtr). There'll be video posted on my other channel when it gets more under way.
+Aetoc Very cool!! We'll make sure to follow along.
The 150psi is more then likely what u really have for compression numbers.
yoo Eagle Japan lmao, you guys should check scarborough's car scene!
+Krayzie Trini We're hoping to hold a meet in the coming future so hopefully we'll get a chance to check out alot of the local rides.
perfect choice!
Damn, I was visiting my aunt & uncle in Mississauga like 4 months ago, i didn't even realize this place existed lol
+Brokeguy 808 There are a few places like that in the city!
Where did you buy that engine? Japan?
Serious/possibly stupid question:
What do you do when a part goes out on a 100% import motor?
- concerned guy researching engine swaps for his Toyota truck.
There are always places to source parts. we've found a few sites for the BEAMS engine. Usually a forum or FB group are great with leads.
Hey thanks again. I had no idea about battlegarage. You're doing good things with these videos/replies.
I understand why you went BEAMS when I go engine hunting and see the prices...
Why you need a high revving engine for street use have you seen the traffic on highway 401 and QEW.
+xxscope004xx try John at Foreignspeed. He's an awesome dude, a good friend of ours (tell him we sent you), and a wizard with Honda transmissions.
+David Pratte Thanks a lot! you guys are awesome keep up the amazing work.
Sell Eh Kah :)
Love your guys stuff, I am a loooooongggtime supporter of the mag :)
Thanks Ryan!
holly fuck u guys were across the street from my project car. if u look on the other side there is a garage thats where my car is its a 1994 jzs147 gs300 im getting ready to put a 1j into!
+azam ethawi Sweetness! Sounds like an awesome biuld.
if you were to have compression problems how would you go about fixing that?
Well if its within the alotted time to bring the engine back then we'd return it. Otherwise, it would need a bottom end re-ring.
I see
yo where speed academy located,in Toronto? I live in gta u guys should do a meet.
+kaw law yup, we're in the GTA, kinda. Pete lives downtown and I (Dave) live out in the Hammer. We are thinking about holding a track at TMP this summer as a Speed Academy meet. Or maybe a Drive-In Movie night in Oakville.
OK thanks, next time your in sauga try Japan direct Japanese. It's a new jdm shop, way cleaner setup than eagle.
+kaw kaw We were actually going to go there but they didnt have any BEAMS engines in stock.
+Speed Academy at the 5 drive-in theatre!
Honda F20C would've been a beast in that celica
+Integra DIY agreed, but it'll be fun to try something different. You've got to admit, at $1300 these Beams motors are cheap fun.
you live so close to me, come over and work on my miata !
TORONTO!!!!!!
Those Beams are the only engine that rivals hondas when it come to high revving. i know a guy whose built an n/a beams that revs to 10k.
+Patrice Murfene ya, TRD built a 280-hp version, too. Big cams, ported head, long tube racing header, ITBs, the whole nine yards. Maybe we'll do something similar.
He must of spent a pile of cash to do it because the Beams like all the other S-series engines have bad harmonic and oil pump issues
Yash. Nice choice indeed.
Anyone shopping for an engine should always do a compression test this way before they make the purchase.
That is the only motor to use! Dual BEAMS!
Some JDM MR2s came with this engine.
I had a celica a 86 model love it had to sell it ,it started to make clanking noise couldn't find where it was coming frm ,I recreate selling it 😭😭
haha ya pronounce celica perfectly !!!!!
now ya gota get that engine in and running before 30 days, so ya can do another comp test, after running :D at least now ya know your valves are sealing :D
a few mods, like itbs with trumpets and a killer set of headers and ecu with cam control, ya can pull some nice numbers around 240hp to the tyres !!!!
then have s2000, celica ITB WOT BATTLE !!!!!!!
+sixhunt agreed on all! I'm going to do a dry compression and a leak down test in the next few days as well.
Yeah Toronto Canada
Cant wait!
as a plot twist, i was half expecting a 4a-ge startup build from this... :D ...my misspent youth messing with those
+IrenicusFTW Haha, we thought about it but the Beams was too cheap to turn down.
Why not a 3S-GTE?
BEAMS!!!!!!!
Ayyyyyyy Mississauga reppin
A B-series motor for over a grand? B-series are dirt cheap if you know where to look. You can even pull a K24a2 out of a totaled TSX for less than 300 bucks in good condition, but that is not including the transmission.
