I'm from Akron Ohio and also A boxing historian Let me say THANK YOU I've wanted to see Stevenson and Dokes for 40 years. It wasn't the whole fight but some beats none !!! Maybe one day I will get to see Dokes and Leon Spinks I've heard for decades that it was a Great fight

Amazing that Dokes was just 17... this was a unanimous dec 5-0 not a majority... Dokes had entered the senior Golden Gloves at just 15 losing to Leon Spinks... incredible... like so many he sadly was savaged by drugs later but wow those 70s were just a different breed....

Dokes at 15 lost to Bobby Stewart in the Golden Gloves finals, Spinks in the AAU finals. Highly impressive. And Stewart would end up becoming a trainer to Mike Tyson.

George Foreman once said-While he was still HW champion-That Teofilo was the best HW in the world in 1973. Cosell asked George "Better than you?", and George said YES... .

Teofilo Stevenson at his peak, a frightening combination of size, power, and speed. Granted Michael Dokes is only 17 years old here, but Stevenson dispatches him as easily as one would swat a fly. It's so sad Stevenson did not fight professionally. It's hard to imagine him not becoming a world champion. Why not? Dokes did!

Dokes would get up to lose a 3-2 decision, in a fight he has said he thought he won. If he couldn't beat Igor Vysotsky in 2 fights, how the hell can he become world champion?

Belburg Tyson lost to Henry Tillman twice, Holyfield lost to Ricky Womack, Bowe lost to Robert Salters, Joe Frazier lost to Busther Mathis and Larry Holmes lost to Nick Wells twice, lost both times by ko, fighters improve in the professional game, who said Stevenson couldn't have improved as a pro?, even as an amateur fighters like Foreman, Leonard and Ali talked about him as a future professional champion and trainers and managers like Steward, Dundee, Don King and Bob Arum said that he had all you could wish for a heavyweight champion.

1001yngwie Most of those guys that they lost to were better fighters than they were at the time. Vysotsky was not better than Stevenson. Understand your point, to a degree, but people overrate Teofilo like mad crazy. Even Duran told Castro that Ali would kill him in a fight.

No - he did not knock Dokes out. Dokes gave him life and death these are just highlights of the knockdowns which only count as one punch.

@@Belburg You don’t know boxing. Stevenson was a phenomenal athlete gifted with great height and reach( a clear lean SHW) with great foot speed and hand speed , counterpunching ability and blistering power. He would’ve been an ATG. Foreman and boxing experts know this. Somehow your opinion weighs more than there’s huh? He knocked men out cold in amateur gloves for Pete’s sake

I was gonna say looks like a man vs a boy than i look at the comments and it was a man vs boy just shows how good dokes was in the amateurs

It was a man versus a boy. The Cuban heavyweights looked invincible against US kids. Fighting against older, much stronger and more experienced heavyweights over 15 rounds (in those days), in the pro ranks would been a different story. At 6 foot 7 inches, unbeaten Cuban heavyweight Jorge Luis Gonzales looked unbeatable. Then he ran into seasoned 28 year old champion Bowe and got battered. I have no doubt had he been fighting the 17 year old version of Bowe over 3 rounds Gonzales would have won easily.

Stevenson would’ve been a megastar if he’d turned professional.
