Lyrics:
Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you, hell within
Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you, hell within
Like the coldest winter will
Heaven beside you, hell within
And you think you have it still
Heaven inside you
I saw an interview once where Jerry said that Layne always encouraged him to sing more. He gave Jerry the encouragement to be out there more. Their harmonies are one of the things I loved about Alice In Chains.
I heard they hired awful singers so Layne could step up and be him singing!
@Jerry Cantrell What? Are you impersonating Jerry Cantrell to slide into comments of Alice in Chains fans? I'm not even mad. Nice
"Sunshine.....sweet love my labor!"
@@henriquesilvestre4078where did you heat that

Does anyone else think that Cantrell has a really beautiful voice?
phisheswonder *Yes.* Cantrell's got a set of pipes on him that won't quit, and he's drop-dead gorgeous! I surely hope he becomes a born-again Christian sometime, because I'd love to hear him sing throughout eternity--that's a fact, Jack.: )
uh, no.
phisheswonder if you haven't, you should hear his song the title is "My Song"

Blatantly, we're Satanists. Satan. Satan. Satan. Satan.

phisheswonder cantrell's voice is very soothing which is why it balances so well with Layne's. Layne's rougher voice softens when paired with Jerry's voice.
I can’t believe how well Jerry’s and Layne’s vocals match together it’s like John Lennon’s and Paul McCartney’s vocal harmonies it’s so beautiful
that is saying a lottt but dam i agree
theyre doubled, stereoed, and yeah theyre awesome
Couldn’t agree more
The Beatles suck 😂😂😂

The lyrics accurately describe how people might appear fine but have "hell within" and the song is unique in the sense it's soothing yet has quite a dark atmosphere. One of my all-time favorite songs.
Great analysis. Been searching for a good meaning.
It's funny how much people create their own narratives in regards to the meaning of music. For me, this song was highly relevant when I was a closet heroin addict and my woman of several years, who was very well put together and beautiful and successful didn't know I was a dark twisted mess. "Heaven beside you, hell within".
@@SisypheanSeas13 this is the weakest 'analysis' ever goodbye!
sums me up
The heaven beside you is something that gets you happy, but you can never get it
I love music across all genres and decades, but I can't help but look back on this era and feel we will never have it as good again.
here here
but we had it at least, is our 'secret'
im feeling the same way right now
Born in the late 70's, an 80's kid, a 90's teenager, raised with music from before my time and not even in my 40's yet, our generation was the best, at least in the music we got to enjoy.
same here born in the 70 ties 80ties kid and partied as teen in the 90 ties to all this music ..Music will never be as good as it was I stopped paying attention after the 90 ties Era ended cause it just ducked after that .
Jerry Cantrell is so god damned underrated. He wrote most of the lyrics, nails the guitar solo in every single song, had and has an amazing voice, he captures a feeling like no other, he started that awesome band, and he’s kept it rolling through two personnel changes. All love and all respect. 🥰🤘🏻
Indeed
I think anyone who knows him rates him high honestly
Awesome voice and the glue for the band but layne’s voice was the power behind the band
He's fantastic
he ain't Layne !!
ONE OF THE BEST BANDS OF ALLTIME. VERY UNDERRATED, SHOULD BE IN THE HALL OF FAME.
Agree. I'm not giving up yet. They'll get there.
Well, Pearl and Oasis did get in the RnR Hall of Fame, so i still have faith that these guys get in there.
Yea, same with soundgarden. No doubt, both of them will be in there sooner or later
I've been considering creating an online petition to get them in, but I've never done an online petition before, and quite frankly I don't know if anymore than a handful of people would bother to sign it. I mean in order to gain the attention of the Hall Of Fame committee the petition would need millions of signatures. It's something right now I'm looking into.
Oasis aren't in the Hall Mate.
Does anyone else truly appreciate the BASS in this song ???!!!
Inez is awesome
After the vocals, the best part
Each guitar part and bass part is super good!
Inez is an awesome bassist and awesome person, they upgraded with him over Starr
Pretty much all of their songs. They actually use their bass player for harmony/melody to chilly effect.
Cantrell is a very underrated vocalist, guitarist and songwriter.
jerry Cantrell is so underrated as artist.
I agree dude he's my person favorite guitarist and he has a unique sound
Not by his fans, my friend.
Wow he draws and paints too? What CAN'T that guy do? lol
hes alright
He really is. He's so freakin good
Layne had so much soul. He sang very little in this song but when he came in it was pure chills. When Jerry Cantrell and Layne met, it set the musical universe on fire.
Where did he sing in the song? I think the chorus is just two Jerry's.
same here especially with the rises and drops at 3:30-4:00
We had such great music in the 90's Layne, Kurt, Chris, Shannon, and many more RIP.
Scott Wieland
Of all the "grunge" icons, Jerry Cantrell has got to be one of the most creative and influential to that gritty sound.. musically at least.
kurt? eddie at least :(
+John Jordan AIC is metal..not grunge but does it really matter
+Soverign Cold-Steel imo, it's a mixture of both
+John Jordan To me Jerry is the brains of the outfit. The major over achiever that saw it in others and carried them. (From what I read) Jerry was known to be of guitar greatness from his teacher. Then met Layne as a room mate. Layne having the dream of a rock singer in drag when he was young. Just what
+John Jordan Agreed! You can always tell his style from anyone else's. That's why he's one of my favorite guitarist of all time. :)
I always found it interesting how AIC shared vocals on songs.
ha: listen to "Walk Like An Egyptian", where all four gals in the band take a turn on LEAD vocals. not sure that'd ever been done before.
Like the Beatles? Smh
It also provides for a nice harmonization of Staley singing higher and Cantrell singing lower
@@staceystrukel1917 KISS
@@staceystrukel1917 Why the attitude?
Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley combined baritones creates a haunting yet pleasant combination.
Layne sounded more like a tenor to me, but their voices certainly complemented each other!
Have a look in the Wiki list "American baritones".. And have yourself a nice slice of STFU ;)
^lol
Reports Virtuoso What's a baritone?
05Rudey 😂😂😂😂
Don't need auto-tune when you can sing this well.
Heaven beside you .. ;)
shut up kid
Something that will make you appreciate Jerry even more is the story that towards the end of Laynes life when he was having trouble preforming on stage, Jerry would regularly sing ALL of the vocals, even those that most others could not, while Layne would chime in from time to time. The sound those two could produce will never be matched.
This is the case on the Unplugged show where Jerry sings a few leads and harmonizes throughout most of it, but not for regular shows. Jerry hardly sang at all during electric shows, even the KISS tour shows in '96. The footage is all available.
Chris Edwards not really true. Jerry has always been singing back up or harmonizing with Layne. Just watch the Rio concert in 93. Older albums he was singing mostly back up but by Dirt and Jar of Flies he was singing lead in some songs. Layne himself was the one who kept telling Jerry to "sing more" because he obviously could hear it. Jerry at the time wasn't comfortable and didn't really see himself as a singer. It wasn't until Sap and Boggy Depot where he really came on to his own as a singer.
That pretty much summons up their sound together. There haven't been a match ever since. Love AIC but... Something is missing.. ;)
That reminds me of the Beach Boys now. It's Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, and a couple other guys who joined later. Brian's old now but they let him do a few solo parts and chime in whenever he could. He even fell asleep during one of the songs lol.
That's simply not true. Layne sang all his parts until their last show. Jerry took the lead only in songs where he originally sang lead to start with.
I was born in 1980. I am so thankful I was a child of the 90s.

I think this is in fact the best Alice in Chains songs ever. It has the slower grunge verses, the melodic chorus, and the post-chorus which is real raunchy and heavy. Vocals from both Jerry and Layne. Nothing more you could want. Not too heavy, not to soft, just right. Also epic solo.
I love chorus, always think of grunge when i hear it

Here’s to them & my affair with the love of real connective music from when I was hearing and still feeling now. Not many things are real as you grow older but music keeps me powerful
Jerry Cantrell is definitley one of the best songwriters from over the last 30 years
The thing Layne taught me in my teen years was not to try certain drugs. Not everyone is so fortunate, but his melancholic voice taught me things I needed to know when nobody else knew how to tell me such things. He was truly something special, even through his traumas. ❤ Jerry keeps that heart alive.
You know he died from drugs right?
You don’t understand music. Sad

My interpretation is having someone you love soo much yet feeling undeserving of their love. Heaven beside you is your loved one, so precious and beautiful in your eyes, almost saint-like. Our insecurity, depression, and inner demons, short-comings... is the hell within. The things that torment us, the things we can never share.
I haven’t heard a drummer in a long time so willing to accentuate the structure of the song rather than embellish it with his own personality.
The fact that AIC's catalogue is so small (relatively) and I am still discovering bangers like this is a testament to how incredibly good they were
The ABBA of grunge. Unless you are all about punk. Then its Nirvana. I think AIC with Layne, might have a tiny bit more, especially if you dont count any Hole or Foo.
At about 3:27, the way Jerry let's the notes ring out and the timing of it is just so freaking awesome. It's one of my favorite parts of this song. Alice in Chains is ALWAYS in my rotation......
Tickle Fingers Hello! Ignore the errors, I'm using the translator. So, I love this part started in 3:25 "It's the most beautiful part of the song and I just repeat it over and over again.Eternal Love for Alice in Chains.
I think I read Jerry used a sustain pedal, or something to let the string continue to sound uninterrupted for that whole 16 bar section starting at 3:26, and when you listen closely the Jerry repeats the same melodic figure of those two ongoing notes and the rhythm placement of the riff is constant, not quite what one would play if one was just plain or imaginative with playing.
Listen , that long note goes on for 3 bars then last bar he skips up a note, and holds that until the last half of the 4th beat ending with those 2 quick notes close together, then he starts over again .
forgive my clumsiness at trying to describe the ingenious technique and rhythm scheme of Jerry's solo there but it is simply beautiful. So simply done yet loaded with creativity. in my humble opinion.
In an interview Jerry said that Layne encouraged him to sing more lead....and thats why SAP
had more of Jerry on lead. Apparently Layne told him: "They're YOUR songs...you shòuĺd sing them!" Layne was such a beautiful soul...He truly cared about those close to him. Gawd I miss that man!!!🥺😣🙏😢

This song is beautiful because it can mean so many different things to different people. To me it reminds me of my life as an addict. I was surrounded by family and people who loved me but felt no connection to them, or anything for that matter. Heaven was beside me, but the hell within made me numb to it.

Jerry is the one who wrote this song as well as most of their most famous and best songs and just most of their music in general, he was always the primary songwriter and lyrics were split pretty evenly. Would?/down in a hole/them bones/we die young/sea of sorrow and a shit ton more.
One of their best and most underrated songs. Can't believe this doesn't have 10 times the views it has now.
I can believe it (see my comment above) and well done for using the word "underrated" that I encounter yet again, now regarding this song.

Some of the best music ever recorded came from Alice In Chains In the 1990's.
This has got to be one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. I’ll never forget how bummed I was when I heard that this man died.. he lived like six blocks away from me at the time.. I was only 14. Jesus Christ how time does fly
Can never get enough of that monster guitar riff. These guys are all underrated musicians in my opinion. RIP Layne.

Alice incorporates guitar and bass so well
Why do Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana etc have hundreds of millions of views on each video and AIC only has 10-20 million max? I will never understand. To me they are one of my favorites. It can hardly be because of Layne's death or the bands addictions because the other bands suffered similar fates. Musically they're just as talented if not more. What gives?
Man in the box and Would have 100m if that's of any consolation
Soundgarden gets less views than AIC... only Black Hole Sun is the most viewed of them all, then you have 3 AIC songs with more views than the next SG song (Fell on Black Days), and then 6 AIC songs/performances with more views than Spoonman.
Where did you get the 20 million max from? Would and Man in the Box both have over 100M views.. and many have more than 20M
Still nothing compared to Nirvana's garbage 1B viewed hit and I'll say both AIC and Soundgarden are underviewed but you don't have to twist the truth to make the point.
rooster literally has 78 million views
@@motorologist I'm not twisting the truth to make a point.'What the hell Have I' 6ish million. 'Grind' 11 million.'Sea of Sorrow' 8.8 million. 'We die young' 11 million. 'Them bones' 26 million. And these are pretty big AIC songs too, all official music videos. Pretty much every Nirvana song is into the hundreds of millions. Didn't realise Soundgarden was so low on views too so then I use the same argument but for both AIC/Soundgarden compared to Pearl Jam/Nirvana. I have nothing against the latter, I just think AIC deserve so many more views.
@@sorchx My point was just that Soundgarden wasn't as viewed, fair points on everything else. "What the Hell Have I" is especially underviewed, I agree that Nirvana/Pearl Jam are overviewed in comparison. I love the 90s.
Pretty cool. FM hardly plays real music. I love 90s music.
My boyfriend and I listened to this song when we were driving through rural New Hampshire, it had been my first time going to New Hampshire. The combination of the sun, with the trees, the motion of the car, the fact that I was with the love of my life, it made the experience feel like I was on a movie, and I've never felt such joy and sadness at the same time. I will never forget that moment, this song is powerful. I'd do anything for Layne to be alive again...
They gave me chills when they sing.

Everything about this song is so serious! Serious as Staley’s roller coasters! Yet beautiful! Nobody could do this better than Cantrell
Alice in Chains is the first band I really liked as a kid. I was like 5 or 6 and would call up the radio everyday after school and ask them to play this song, "got me wrong", and "again". I also bought every album they put out on cassette and would play them non stop on my Walkman lol. Truly my favorite band of all time! Layne you are most definitely missed. AIC will never be the same again... Rest in Peace Layne!
One of the very few bands blessed w/ 2 lead singers. Thanks Jerry for continuing.
3 if you count Jerry's solos, man can. Make a guitar sing
Cantrells voice was that perfect match for Staleys. Just beatiful
This song is like the theme of my teenage awakening. I really couldn't explain nor describe elaborately what I felt those days, but when I listen to this, there's a sense of longing like I wanted to return to that era to fix an unfinished business that I do not know of. There's a dread and a bit of joy in my unconcious mind in a state of a hazy dream. _"Truly Heaven beside me, hell within."_
That's how profound this song hit me in my teenage years.
R.I.P Layne Staley
Layne looks all cool and mysterious with his hat.
I don't know where I've been this whole time, but I'm finally here and it feels like home. Pure bliss listening to all of AIC on repeat. Beautiful.
yes,Jerry Cantrell is a great guitarist and singer as well, it's funny when he says " if I can sing, everyone can sing", because he's actually a very good singer, but he is a humble guy, always underrated as a singer, but he has millions of fans all over the world , who love his voice....it's good to have Alice in Chains around nowadays.....
He only started singing more lead because Layne pushed him to it..told him "they're your songs, man.. fuckin' sing 'em". He didn't want to be the lead vocalist but Layne coaxed him out of that shell. Both of them are the most humble guys that will always be the best IMO
This song releases all the poison I have inside myself every time I listen to it
How much i miss the 90s.. :'(
I am 58 and i love this kind of music
Well stick a shotgun in my mouth at the peek of my carrier and pull the trigger if you miss it that much RIP Kurt Cobain
Was definitely a great time in music.
I totally agree and I'm 39
Crazy, have listened to this song for like 8 years or so, and I just realized they say "Hell within" after the Heaven beside you chorus.
Raven Darkmoon I don't know sometimes I just pick up on things that I've been listening to for a while. I was like "Oh no shit... that's actually what they say."
Like Black Hole Sun, I just understood about the black hole in the sun... I don't know, I was like "Oh I get it now..." now where's my dunce cap haha
Jacob David C. Cunningham me too👍👍
I like the nearly baroque structure to the chorus. All the songs sung in high school choir classes clearly stuck with Mr. Cantrell in later years.
I was 16 yrs old when this album dropped. Chuck D educated me on a high degree. I learned so much about the culture & about who we are as blk & mexican ppl. One luv always to P.E.
Heaven beside you... Hell within.
Funny how perfect AiC's lyrics will always be. I can always relate to them so much.
