- Basic servicing should be a skill that every 4WD owner should know, and it doesn't get much simpler than servicing a trusty 1KZ!
Here I show you how I go about doing a 5000km service on my Prado, with some important tips and tricks thrown in to keep you away from an expensive trip to the mechanics.
*Note*
I am not a qualified mechanic. The advice given in this video is from my own experience and knowledge from working on my own car, and should not supplement professional advice. If you are in doubt about any part of this guide, please speak to a qualified mechanic or automotive technician before carrying out any work.
Your dog has amazing comedic timing
i guess I'm kinda randomly asking but do anybody know of a good place to stream newly released movies online ?
@Sincere Roger lately I have been using Flixzone. Just google for it =)
Thanks Todd for keeping us entertained while we can't get out there.
Good job Todd I have the exact same car I service mine every 5.000ks from new it's done 357.000 and had no problems at all but I grease mine too every service 👍
Hello from Brazil.
I am researching to buy a J120 here in Brazil and it is quite difficult to find one with a known maintenance history, so I am researching everything about the maintenance of this car, considering buying one without knowing the history and doing all possible maintenance. For that, your videos are being very useful! I have no words to thank!
Hey mate, thanks for the great content. Really helpful to keep my 05 120 Prado running smooth😀
I too am a WA resident so if I see you on the tracks I'll be sure to shout you a beer🙂
Hope to see you around on the tracks mate!
Hey Todd, brilliant video dude, you say you're not a mechanic but even a 'real' mechanic would struggle to explain things in great detail like you do. I have a Hilux Surf that's had a rough life and I'm so glad I've found your channel as your vids are just what I need to help me restore my pickup. Keep up the good work :-)
Thanks 👍 really appreciate your kind words. Let us know how your Surf restoration goes!
Love it! So relevant for us right now. Thanks for reppin the 1KZ 👍
Cheers mate, gotta keep up the 1KZ's reputation!
I use a medical syringe with a small black retic tube attached to the end to suck up the remaining oil in the oil filter tray, then release it into my old filter
Cheers for the tip, I'll have to try that out next time
Thanks for the video mate! Very helpful. Gave me the confidence to give it a go myself.
Hey mate, great video. I use Ryco & have done over the last 40 years, used to use Castrol, but now use Penrite.
What I use on the sump plug is a magnetic holder from Supercheap. It has a handle on a flexible wire cable with a magnetic holder on the bolt. Loosen the sump plug, then fit magnetic piece and rotate until out of thread and pull away as oil drops out. Air filter, I use a K&N, makes a difference.
Mine is an April, 2004 model still using a lot of original items. What I did do for the first time was remove the mini sump which is easily removable once bash plate has been removed. Once that sump is off it gives access to the engine oil pick up. I have seen pictures of these fully covered in gunk, therefore, starving the engine of oil. After 16 years, I removed mine, expecting the worst & to my surprise, it was 99% clean.
I removed it any way & was over the moon how clean the bottom end of my engine was, remembering this is a sub sump, not the complete engine sump. This goes to prove that changing the oil as per Toyota specs using quality oil has rewarded me in bucket loads. I'm an ex mechanic from the old school. My cars have never been to a dealer, never.
Cheers for that mate, I'll keep an eye out for that sump plug magnet tool
Great video. I'm learning a lot from this channel! Just a suggestion, if you ever make another service video, you could show people how to replace the air conditioner filter and how to clean it out. I'm talking about the one behind the glove compartment. From personal experience, I have to clean this out once a year or after a big trip as a lot of just a leaves and other junk find its way into there. It was weird because my car didn't come with the filter at all so I bought a genuine one but something got into the system and made a rattling sound for ages driving me nuts as there was no filter. I ended up using a leaf blower to blow it out as I couldn't get my hand deep enough into the a/c system and take it out and that worked a treat. But it takes like 1-2 minute to take the glove compartment out and swap/clean out the filter so you could really easily show others how to do this on one of your videos and I'm sure it would help a few people. I presume you would know how to do this, but if you don't, it is explained in the user manual.
Thanks for the suggestion mate, I'll keep it in mind for future episodes 👍
Hey, great video . Use a magnetic pickup tool to fish that sump plug next time .
Great stuff, thanks for sharing. I should try this out at some stage.
Been using Penrite for decades. Gave up on Castrol in my rally cars in 1980s
loved it man, great video and very informative keep it up !!!!
mightycarmods spotted.
Nice bro 👍🏼
19:41 Mid October and i'm still not allowed to work (my industry is 100% shut down) or travel more than 5km from my inner city, single bedroom apartment so i'd say yup, i've well and truly been asked to do something crazy. Think i'm complaining too much? Come and do 7 months in Melbourne first them we'll check that positive WA attitude of yours! ;)
Apart from that I just found your channel today and am loving your vids. If I can offer a pointer please try to level your dialogue and music a bit closer as your talking is really quiet and your music really loud. As a rule (audio broadcast standards) music is actually set at a lower level than dialogue. It's common from people to think the opposite and crank the tunes, but all this does is blow your ears out and have to lower the volume especially when playing through a TV/speakers. Anyway keep you the great work - cheers!
Hi Avon, thanks for the feedback mate. I always like hearing from people about how I can improve the channel, so I'll make sure to correct that in later videos.
Your dog spoke back😜
Love the headlights you've got on your 120, looking for a set like that myself. Where can I find a set like that? Great channel. Helps a lot! Thanks!!
Thanks mate, the headlights are from ebay, there should be a few options on there.
Thanks Todd good stuff. Looking for the bullbar lights that you got on there assist with a link. Cheers Mate!!
Thank's Todd, always interesting! 7 litre penrite oil containers, i'II look out for those!
Can you do a vid on cam belt change please?
Hi Todd, have you have a video of changing your thermostat on kzj120?
Hi mate, no I don't sorry. Check out Anthony 4x4 Diesel on RUclips, he should have a video there.
Cheers thanks Todd, yeah i have seen his video and he did’nt actually do it, he just show us where it is and if its not malfunctioning dont change it because its a little tight where the positions of it. But if youre replacing your alternator you might as well do the thermostat because its just behind.👍
Have you done the transmission flush? I cant find the filler plug: 2004 prado petrol in perth
Hi dear , i always watch and like your videos , I just purchase a prado 120 2009 diesel. How I can add more power to it or just get it close to factory , your advises very needed :)
Thank you 🙏
Hey mate keep them coming. Hey mate where did you get you intercooler to throttle body hose from? I can’t seem to find one 👍🏻
Hey mate, its just a piece of silicone hose i bought in an auto shop and cut to length
Todd Lauren sweet mate thank you, I’ll give that a go 👍🏻
😊😂😂😂😂 the dog ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great video Todd!
Do you grease/lubricate the drive shafts often? Each service or every other?
Thanks mate, really appreciate your feedback!
I probably don't do it as often as I should, but whenever I remember to do it I do!
hey! Love your video. just a quick one: how much oil does your engine burn over 5k kilometres?
I think i went through about a litre over 5000kms? Was a long time ago now
@@offroadcrusader sounds aboit right... Mine goes though about the same give or take with 15W40
@@offroadcrusader how about now though?
Hi mate can u make a video how u put your bonnet scoop in your pardo thx buddy
Hi mate,
best person to speak to about that sort of information is Jacks Diesel & Custom Fabrication in Taroom, QLD. He is the one who fitted my scoop and he is a wealth of knowledge about it.
I've moved over from Shell rimula R4 to Fuchs Titan Carco 15w40. Better specked.
Hi, nice video, although my prado is the V6 petrol I believe the process will be the same except the appropriate oil, filter etc. also where did you get your awesome headlights from?
Thanks mate, really appreciate it. Yeah same sort of process, but different filters and oil. You'll be all over it in no time haha!
The headlights I purchased from PS4x4 on ebay. Search for 'Prado 120 Headlight Halo' and they should come up. I did a long term review of the lights too if that interests you, its on the channel.
Hi Todd. Can you please recommend a good 12v vacum to keep in my ford Ranger ? Thanks 😊
Is 5w 30 oil ok for Melbourne weather
Yes I would use a lighter oil in colder conditions to stop it congealing.
whats going "full ST" mean?
Corona virus, it's just a short time... 🤣😂🤣
I saw your name and thought I had attracted Mr Happy Gilmore for a second 🤣
What size socket to change the diff oil ?
14mm from memory.
how many kms that you need oil change?
I service every 5000kms, but the manual states every 10000kms
