I have a theory on what this was intended to be. I saw that soldier being sneeky in the doorway(i don't know if it was actually in the game or not), and i thought to myself, "This is so mesmurizing in a strange way, but why", and my theory gives it reson to be strange and unnerving, what if this is some kind of Combine Brain Washing Device using some form of rudmentary method of hipnosis, this clock could be used for making Stalkers(brainwash them, replace their brains with a computer one, augment cybernetics in them, and Inject code in their computerized minds). You might think if this were the case, then why have it in public and not in the Citadel or Nova Prospect or some other factory, well i think thats the idea, put it in such an unlikly place, a place where it would be the last place you would expect it to be, or a place you would never expect it to be(i could be wrong). And i would guess some more of that Semi-Brainwashing Water(as explained by an NPC in the beginning of the retail Half Life 2) could make it unnoticeable
i'm pretty shure that this is weird beta combine tech, cause of the tile walls that are in a bunch of beta combine tech. the beta combine tech has always been my favorite part of hl2 beta, it's so alien and weird. These sound files are the sounds of nightmares though
These types of surreal aspects make me want to see the Beta in a finished state, it’s such a creepy but interesting place where you want to explore it all, City 17 and the world around it are amazing.
theme1_loop.wav sounds like a really distorted version of Military Precision. (that one song from the original half life that became freeman's mind theme)
Love the ARG's you add to your videos. Everyone else just posts essays about gaming stuff which makes channels feel homogenized. Always liked the way you use the ARG's to showcase the eery atmosphere in games.
You can play through it yourself. You can download it and with a little patience it's easy to get it up and running. It's pretty buggy and all of the builds can easily crash though.
I would never thought that under a video about HL Beta I would see a reference to the underground soviet mini-film. Just watched it and want to say thank you for the recommendation. I can see similarities and even that "dark and gritty" Beta aesthetics, and I want to ask how do you know about this film?, it looks so niche, like something people only watch studying cinematography in university.
Damn, that's some missed opportunity there. I thought there was going to be some big reveal that he was trapped in some mental limbo re-experiencing his last day of freedom before being taken away by the combine and that the clock was in fact a window into the truth. That he was turned into a stalker and his conscious mind had been suppressed into a prison that warped further with each repetition. This little story could have benefited from a stalker looking directly into the camera at the end, screaming.
I feel like they were testing logic_timer, math_counter and other entities with this as a squeal effect plays after 4 counts (math_counter) and every few seconds the arm flips to the other side (logic_timer) Also, the squeal sound effect is used in d2_coast_03 for when the radio for activating the alarm is thrown off the platform... but it doesn't use the squeal01 sound effect. Even stranger, all the sound effects for the clock are gone except for the creepy squeal01 sound effect! I can't understand why they copied that file, deleted the others but kept the squeal01 sound effect! It feels like they were toying with dataminers.
This video was good! Liked it alot, may I suggest a video of this style? A lone refugee wonders into Ravenholm around the same time as Gordon and tries to survive the horrors that await them there.
I feel like this was supposed to be a torture method the clock seems to have no other use and an empty room seems kind of ridiculous if the game was complete I feel like it'd be a torture method because I heavily doubt it's just a normal clock with those noises.
A lot of the HL2 beta steampunk aesthetics remind me of the first two Thief games. The look and sounds of that clock could easily be found in a Mechanist area.
I wonder if they did this on purpose, or, if this was incomplete and never finished, or even yet, if there was a map with a completed version of this "clock".
I don’t know if you had this idea in planning already or you read my comment in one of your videos but this is literally the video I asked for. Thank you
squeal1.wav is actually in hl2 and can be heard during highway 17. when u reach the gunship and receive the rpg, there's a rebel in a tower and if u kill him, the sound plays for some reason
I think it was probably some small obscure animation test from the developers to see how the engine worked well with a constant repeating animation with animated lights and sound effect
0:29 valve probably took northern european stuff or eastern or just by confusion or mistake text from places since the game is maybe in russia or somewhere around the area of earth so the red sign at 0:29 says steel in Finnish but it was later probably removed since it doesn't fit very well where the game is set in the final version then there's an other sign later that says veikko which is a finnish name
Awesome deep dive RadHaz 😄! The Half life 2 beta will always be the thing that cements HL2 as a horror game for me, with an even scarier story in so many ways, a big scary monster doesn't have to be chasing you down a dimly lit hallway to be terrifying, but a strange, otherworldly clock that seems to be unaffected by time and space and just ticks menacingly over a checkerboard floor that's dirty and grimed, is much more scarier because of the implications it presents given the mystery of this world! Great vid again RadHaz 😄
Just a note: The sound you hear at 5:07 was added in post-production. Just to improve the spook-factor of the scene.
well i can say that it at least worked for me hahaha
Thanks for the nightmare fuel Rad Haz!
OK, but why was the door open? What was behind it?
I always forget which map this is. And can't remember while wanting to play it. drives me mad.

it might not even be a clock, that might just be the closest we could describe it.
Another thing that's worth noting is that the "window" isn't a window at all. It's a piece of the wall which slowly fades out as you approach it.
Dang. I didn't even notice that...
That's just a func_areaportalwindow. It's used for optimization, it basically hides everything behind it, until you get close
🤨

Wait there's an ARG here???!
@Retro Riiiiiiiiiight! This is totally what a person playing an ARG would say!!
Damn, does this guy ever run out of beta content. Because I hope not. Ok, next time, list every beta texture and count every single pixel of them.
You can play through it yourself.

Theory about the strange clock: the Bata devs put it in to test lighting, animation, and sound displacement mechanics
bata
I hope someone can remake theme1 so we can hear what it sounds like properly.
I’ve always wondered where Valve got it from. It’s probably a royalty free sound effect but it’s probably part of a real song.
@MASLIN BRUNER well I hope someone can find the sample they used
the clock is counting down hl3s release
i wonder if it was some sort of weird symbolism / venting about them originally not having enough time to finish the game or something

Listening to the Half life 2 beta sounds is like a guilty pleasure to me.

I believe this device references "Present continuous 1989" soviet mini-film, you will get very same vibes from machines shown there.

Oh yeah, "time" for another great vid B)

time Dr. Freeman? is it really that time again.
hey radiation hazard, I really like these "creepy" type videos. I wish you'd do more, they're really great😀

Oh i never heard the clock it's interesting i'm gonna check it out
That squeal sound is actually still in retail!
yeah its played when combine soldiers rappel down a ledge, seen it in hl2 lost coast.
@@rebel6301 wrong, its actually from a random death sound from when you kill a civilian in highway 17
I really want to know the thought process behind the creation of this room. I guess for now we can only speculate. Good video!
because of theme1_loop i think everyone just went into a rave party and gordon wasnt invited.
In the retail if you shoot rebel on tower you can hear clock scream
Not true you can climb the tower and once your up there just press e on the little radio there
yea thats true

@@RadiationHazardYT Thanks Rad:)
The combine killing through curiosity is a cruel way to destroy humanity.
I watched 2 videos about this map, about this clock, in this month, in this week, and then this video popped up.
The clock is after you.
*run*
A clock is nothing compared to stuff you will see in The Zone.
Is this a STALKER reference?)
there is no straight path in the Zone :))
You have to make more videos with journal entries like this Rad Haz!
I love the format of this video, keep it up!
The beta Half-Life 2 is so...out of this world! What Valve wanted to do anyways? Also, amazing video as always!
"Far distant eyes look out through yours."
"Something secret steers us both, we shall not name it."
I fear no man but that clock it scares me
The Clock Is ticking
it hipnotizing you
One of the strangest thing about this clock is that sequel1 scream is that was used one of the coasts map
Your editing skills have upped higher than the ceiling!
Keep up the good work!
Getting David Lynch vibes from the clock room.

Didn't regret after subscribed to you
I just wanna say, the journal entry bit was really well done. Genuinely felt like a Lovecraft short story being narrated.
hell yeah, clock time
"Squeal1.wav vibe"
That's just an Escapement, isn't it?
Not a full clock, but definitely one of the most important parts.
The clock was there just to tell the time left till HL3 releases
Time, Dr. Freeman?
Is it really that time again?
Looks like some Mechanist contraption from Thief 2
5:08 this part was very creative

I’d love to make a game that matches the feeling of the HL2 beta. Its a feeling I can’t even really describe
Isn't that squeal sound used in Highway 17? At New Little Odessa?
ngl that guitar slapped i wonder where it's from
I actually learned about this clock ago from a youtuber called "oddheader" who uploads freaky and *odd* gaming findings
Wait, which of his videos was it in? I thought I watched all of his stuff, but I don't remember this clock...
Maybe the clock is timing a sort of scanning device, designed to take pictures of the rebel soldiers that are captured.
I think it was probably some small obscure animation test from the developers to see how the engine worked well with a constant repeating animation with animated lights and sound effect
For some reason I get Eyes Wide Shut vibes from that room

The opening is freaking me out wth 💀
I don't want to ruin the mistery but i think these clock sounds were made to test the mix with multiple audios, and ambience too
but i still don't know the purpose of this clock kek
Aww now I’m freaked out by the clock.
The narration of this video was amazing!
Theme1_loop.wav is kinda my second favorite song from hl2bet
It captures that atmosphere of the game
The fact that on the 3rd day the speedlimit sign turned into a roundabout sign scares me the most..
Radiation Hazard Creepypasta readings. (I still have nightmares about that Clock.)
that squeak sound can be heard in chapter highway 17 when you get to Odessa, theres like a tower. if you shoot it with a rocket it najes that sound
The 27 people that disliked this have a broken clock
i'm pretty sure the squeal noise it makes is the same sound used when the gunship at NLO destroys a radio on a tower
that is fkin terrifying. especialy the squeal.
The clock speeds up.
I once managed to trigger it's sound on one of the maps of highway 17 in Gmod by accident
Good to see you back
half life beta is one of my favourite topics to explore
If this had just been a short film made in source, I was already impressed. And then it was this whole thing. Very fucking cool.
Really nice video and a nice story. Wish there would be more
Will we ever get direct answers from Valve about the Beta mysteries?
Finally, it's about time someone talked about it
Kinda one of the most eary things in Half life 2 beta
this brings an Inland Empire vibe, so many noises for two movements
Funny, a couple weeks ago I was just reading about this clock.
Fear the Clock
God, This was 2 years ago already? Time flies.
TIME, Dr Freeman.. is it really that time again?
Can you do a video on Eli's Den/Scrapyard & the Antlion Caves from the HL2 Beta?

what now, strange pants?
