I feel like they spent the majority of their budget making their CG promotional video. There is less than ten seconds of footage of it actually flying.
This is fake. It cant fly with such small wings. Look at real dragonfly and her wings/body ratio, and then look at this robot. Where is battery ? Is it so small, that it's not visible ? So, how long this robot can "function" (I doubt it can fly) with such small battery ?
It can hover and glide . Principle takeaway ? Flies , birds and cockroaches are at the back of R&D's ' vending machine . We , on the consumer level see whats at the front . Quite literally, 1984 is now a cliche . And yes , even cloaking or really assimilation with its surface
And I gotta say, with 3d printing, flexible screens, and everything else that's been coming out, this is definitely one of the coolest and most versatile :)
a few questions: - How long does the battery last? I guess no more then half an hour. - How stable is it in wind? - Why would it be better then a QC drone if it can't carry a load? - The army uses even smaller drones then these already, then why would you use this one? - How much sound does it produces? (if used for spionage missions) - How will it ever protect your house if they just can carry it whit them? - Why does every promotional video lies?
Lies! Lies and more Lies! It is really sickening, when kids eagerly try do make them for their school or college projects, to see these Dragon Lies, flutter hopelessly on the dirt instead of the clouds! Plain lure to get funds and sales offers and investments from those - - - - s who believe in these younsters. Too bad from the Scientific Perspective.
This is amazing. Congratulations to the development team. Its usefulness is unquestionable. However, it can easily fall in wrong hands and then we have problems.
they asked for 100 grand, got well over a million in funding and have not made anything yet. People are getting angry thinking that they have been scammed
What is the battery life during active usage? What is the maximum operational distance? What software does the Dragonfly support? Does it have flight plan or waypoint capabilities? What is the resolution of the attached camera?
A guy from India is leading this, oh great, I guess we know who everyone's going to bow down to in the future. A robot with an Indian-English accent, with a throne made out of skulls, SkyNet here we come.
+beaglemanzzz I bet you they had major problems putting a camera on this thing, without a stabilizer its useless, and there is no gimbal small enough and light enough to add that will keep the device in the air?
Simple Rohan No offense intended, but your comment is too simple Rohan! Is your point that because it is promotional that I should expect exaggeration and therefore not mention it?
The military already have them, so this is 'reinventing the wheel' for what? To spy on your neighbours? Next invention; an anti nano-drone missile system?
Gordon Freeman, Have you seem what happens to children when a bomb is dropped on or near them? I guess certain ways of beheading people are acceptable, while others are not.
I have numerous questions... 1. When will they be available for purchase? 2. Do the different wing styles work together (i.e. Bat wing + Dragonfly wing)? 3. Does the camera on the Dragonfly send live video feed to the controller? If you would answer these questions I would be very happy :D
Looks like it would be no where near as stable as a quadcopter even with the gyroscopes it would probably shake around no way you'd get a steady video out of it.
Does it have to be programmed to follow and at what altitude/speed/distance etc. or can AI judge it on its own? To act as a mobile security camera do you have to program its patrolling path or does AI patrol the desired area accordingly avoiding obstacles, following corridors, air vents etc.? What are its AI capabilities?
fluchter1996 I'm not following the project at all, I'm just estimating based on how ornithopters soak up power and that batteries on that scale suck... although I did think that 2-3 minutes was a little generous...
fluchter1996 I spent a few years working on stuff like this, and fixed wing and/or rotor based aircraft are inefficient at very small scales (like insects). The issue with these types of craft is that we don't have good actuators for this type of motion. They typically use servos or motors but there are some developing technologies to more closely replicate muscles... but until then flappers are going to be pretty bad...
What would make this impressive if they were able to add more than 1DOF per wing... I think dragonflies have at least 2 active DOF (frequency and sweep), where pitch might be passively controlled...
It seems to me that to make this thing useful for surveillance would take a camera with size, weight, and image stabilization technologies more advanced than what it takes to make it fly. But if they can deliver what they promise, it will be a really impressive device.
Awesome! The lower sound output is a huge benefit compared to multi rotor rc's. I think you should add mentioning that feature in your demo. What is the db output? Now let's see one big enough to carry 200+#! ;)
If you offer them in much larger sizes they'll be more stable in a breeze. Otherwise im sticking with the 2 foot dia Cyclone UFO quadcopter. I suppose the military grade ultra capacity battery isn't available?
What a great invention! I would like to buy one for my house security but how is it going to work? How long can the fly flying and does it need recharging or it can go back to the bases for recharge by itself? Can we see all the video from the fly if we are away from home? How long can the fly doing the video recording? How much will it cost for security capability? Does it has the capabilities to escape from intruder trying to use a net catching them? Marine Biologist Jo.
1:20 "low on battery" really ? I flew for 30 mins the other day. One battery charge. How long can this thing fly for realistically? That was never mentioned.
The Dragonfly is a failed crowdfunding project that was to build a miniaturized four-winged ornithopter UAV designed by TechJect. The Dragonfly supposedly was designed for: aerial photography, interactive gaming, autonomous patrolling for security and surveillance, etc.[1] The project claimed that the UAV was going to manufactured by TechJect, but all development was canceled after crowdfunding IndieGoGo refused to release money.[2]
so looking at the thing fly the body moves up and down when the wings flap . How dose this translate to the video / areal photography ? wont it be very shaky. Cant she that being any good for anything
I bet you had major problems putting a camera on this thing, without a stabilizer its useless, and there is no gimbal small enough and light enough to add that will keep your device in the air? You took over a million dollars, what did you do with it?
Hey, if it can take off and land on it's own, you could integrate light solar cells as part of the wings to enable it to recharge... might work while it's moving too?
I love it.... Well done guys... I am no expert or scientist, just a layman spectator, but I was wondering if the addition of solar panels to the wings and/or body might give it additional power and/or range?
Thanks Jay... I have been looking at the video of this great invention and it intrigues me no end... another thought (LOL)... given that is prop driven, could there be a way to harness that energy .. similar to the way a wind turbine generator works?.... Cheers
no mention is made of flight durations but i have an idea for you to help advance it... would it be possible to add wireless charging capbalility? because if so you could make what i would enjoy for you to call "the hive" basically a recharging station that you can drop at a site or place so that the units can return to it when needing charging... if "the hive" doesnt work for you in name, maybe something more dragonflyish lol or just like dfs for dragonfly fueling station :D eh its an idea hope it helps.
OMEGA has GPS, and yes you can control it with just GPS alone. the 2.4Ghz RC is capable of 200-500 ft of control, more can be achieved if you have wi-fi networks in the vicinity
i m not quite sure if this is more efficient than a $87 remote controlled helicopter with camera , is this more stable or has a lower battery consumption or what ?
What's the typical battery life? Assuming that it's flying the whole time, using a camera and GPS? I couldn't find anything specific for this on the main website.
Does it come with warranty? If so, how long and any limitations? E.g. if I accidently slam this insect into a wall and break insect's nose, is it covered or is it considered negligence? Also, how do I control this insect..via my cell only or can I also use my laptop?
i know what these guys should do with this. if they manage to make a fully autonomous controls, whether through external controls (ie a program running on a computer communicating with the robot from a ways away) or internal controls (basic programming loaded on the robot), and if they continue making it smaller, they need to make plant pollinators. Robotic bees for commercial use.
I feel like they spent the majority of their budget making their CG promotional video. There is less than ten seconds of footage of it actually flying.
This is really awesome but I'm not sure how this could possibly be more efficient then a quad rotor since they produce constant thrust.

Andrelo1111 WTF? You just witnessed it fly at the start of the video, its not fake, its not made of lead is it so it does fly and it costs over a grand.
VIKINGODIN
It can hover and glide . Principle takeaway ? Flies , birds and cockroaches are at the back of R&D's ' vending machine . We , on the consumer level see whats at the front . Quite literally, 1984 is now a cliche . And yes , even cloaking or really assimilation with its surface

1:13 'spy on people'; as the camera hovers two little girls! Yeah...that's not stalker, creepy, predator at all!!!!
Looks like a promotion video for funding.
I can't wait to see it actually work.
a few questions:

Jared Graber Ist Recce ? I would hasten CIA/SOG and others like DEVGRU
Whats SOG?
Defense doesn't throw money away on nutters, they see a future full of nastiness for this little beast.
Love to see bright young people working toward success.
What is the battery life during active usage?
What is the maximum operational distance?
What software does the Dragonfly support? Does it have flight plan or waypoint capabilities?
What is the resolution of the attached camera?
Is it G.P.S. enabled?
is it easy to repair on-sight?
Is there a web-sight?
is this all a joke?
What happens when a bird thinks this is lunch and grabs it and flies away?
Fantastic, young people ! The world's future is you.
When he says "spy on people" there's a picture of kids.

A guy from India is leading this, oh great, I guess we know who everyone's going to bow down to in the future. A robot with an Indian-English accent, with a throne made out of skulls, SkyNet here we come.
Wow, this raised more than a million dollars. The final product must be amazing.
2 1/2 years later, where's the dragonfly?
+beaglemanzzz quad copters took over.
+Jorgen297 Of course...it's coming out of academia.
+beaglemanzzz I bet you they had major problems putting a camera on this thing, without a stabilizer its useless, and there is no gimbal small enough and light enough to add that will keep the device in the air?
+beaglemanzzz Gone black proberly.
Wow, I just got a months worth of exaggerated claims in one video!
bro.. it's a promotional video than a discovery channel documentary
Simple Rohan
No offense intended, but your comment is too simple Rohan! Is your point that because it is promotional that I should expect exaggeration and therefore not mention it?
Atka59 Respect you from a cynic's perspective... funded by USAF, there has to be strength to it.. exaggeration to some, might be reality to others
A great tool for oppressing people... well done!
dont feel oppressed.. feel releeeeeased..
John Ioannou
Beheading people is unacceptable in any circumstances, and so is bombing people.
Only lunatic psychopaths would suggest otherwise.
niklar55, That's exactly my point.
I have numerous questions...
1. When will they be available for purchase?
2. Do the different wing styles work together (i.e. Bat wing + Dragonfly wing)?
3. Does the camera on the Dragonfly send live video feed to the controller?

Well try Googling something called " Image stabilization " under computer vision. It's used on every camera system in the world right now.
Does it have to be programmed to follow and at what altitude/speed/distance etc. or can AI judge it on its own? To act as a mobile security camera do you have to program its patrolling path or does AI patrol the desired area accordingly avoiding obstacles, following corridors, air vents etc.? are they developing this still? or has it entered production? This would be an interesting RC aircraft to own
Even the uploader's name is Giant Rat. How trustworthy
Your name is spider ass, how ironic
haha :D you again. either you are a part of this cheesy scam, or you invested in it. Either way, the pitty
SpiidAcis lol.. just an engineer who builds small robots.. but eitherway I think indiegogo and kicstarter are great platforms and a firm believer
that was funny.
SpiidAcis he is in on the scam. the only thing that you can find on his account is stuff related to this video
But how long will it fly on a single charge??
probably 2-3 mins...
fluchter1996 I'm not following the project at all, I'm just estimating based on how ornithopters soak up power and that batteries on that scale suck... although I did think that 2-3 minutes was a little generous...
fluchter1996 I spent a few years working on stuff like this, and fixed wing and/or rotor based aircraft are inefficient at very small scales (like insects). They have not one video of it flying, not even on a tether. Fraud!
Flying insects provide lot inspiration to modern technologists to mimic and develop similar machines that can be used in many exciting applications.
Hello from 2020! How are you, Dragonfly?
It seems to me that to make this thing useful for surveillance would take a camera with size, weight, and image stabilization technologies more advanced than what it takes to make it fly. But if they can deliver what they promise, it will be a really impressive device.
I wonder how many prototypes were made to get the wing action and synchronisation correct.
I wonder what's the max. payload it can carry & if it can detect objects in its path ?
Great job! How much can it be scaled up?
Im sure it flies under 8 minutes and the motors are lower than 65% efficient do to the size
If 2 points to fly(4 wings), if 1 to move all 4? Then change saving battery maybe?
Can i subject-buy and ez job anyway? A battery notification maybe?
Nature is the greatest innovator in the Universe.
What a great invention! I would like to buy one for my house security but how is it going to work? How long can the fly flying and does it need recharging or it can go back to the bases for recharge by itself? Can we see all the video from the fly if we are away from home? Marine Biologist Jo.
What can it do that a Quadcopter can't?
People cant see if it is a "Bird" or a "Drone", sooo u can spy on them xD
Put it in your pocket, but I'll bet it's vaporware anyway...
A quadcopter can fight strong wind this thing would just get blown away.
people though the same when after the airplane some body invented the helicopter. One word: "Diversity".
totally agree, squared minds see new things and the only thing they can do is criticize cause they are not able to create them.
this has a lot of potential. i would love to see a larger version.
and how long does the battery last? Also, a little more flight time
Does the battery last longer than a quad? A quad is simpler.
1:20 "low on battery" really ? I flew for 30 mins the other day. One battery charge. How long can this thing fly for realistically? That was never mentioned.
Great, but the major catch is what is the flight time?
I'm assuming it's less than 3 minutes.
*90% of flying footage is concept CGI, there's your red flag right there.*
How much do they cost in all , & are they in Walmart ? .
Good question! That's exactly what I would like to know. The one I ordered is Gamma mach 2 (so does not come with gps).
thank you for helping us reach the next level. Cheers!

They raised over $1.1M on an Indiegogo campaign in Dec. 2012. Haven't shipped a single unit. Nice videos but not much more.
Damn.
+Dan Tuchler if you read the fine print on the video, paypal and indiegogo is holding their money
Battery life is gonna suck. Plus in the military? Does it withstand extreme cold and hot environments?
Since they said military purposes, could it withstand sand grains getting into its gears and other mechanical parts?
Wow!It's really amazing! But it remind s me some German flying applications.Really great!:-)
Does it fly in wind?
I bet don't, as most small RC Helicopters.
this is very cool tec,, we are getting better ar the years go by good job guys
so looking at the thing fly the body moves up and down when the wings flap . How dose this translate to the video / areal photography ? wont it be very shaky. Cant she that being any good for anything
nice. wow it can record a days skiing? whats the flight time on a full charge and whats the recharge time between flights?
I bet you had major problems putting a camera on this thing, without a stabilizer its useless, and there is no gimbal small enough and light enough to add that will keep your device in the air? You took over a million dollars, what did you do with it?
Hossam Zayed where??
i think is good for 3 mins fly
Hey, if it can take off and land on it's own, you could integrate light solar cells as part of the wings to enable it to recharge... might work while it's moving too?
I love it.... Well done guys...
I am no expert or scientist, just a layman spectator, but I was wondering if the addition of solar panels to the wings and/or body might give it additional power and/or range?
Mounting a camera on this thing?!?! LOL What image stabilization technique are you using?!
still not delivered a single dragonfly to the supporters :(, hope they deliver ASAP
How long can it hover, compared to quadcopter?
So who came up with theirs first, these guys or Festo?
Nice one Jayant! Wish you all the best.
Stereo camera built in?!!! Okay. Dear Santa, I want this for my birth anniversary !!!
Planes 'low on battery'? please... my combat wing has lasted 6 + hours without even landing..
Wow! Mom, I want one for Christmas!
Has anybody got their hands on one of these already?im confused on indigogo thing.do you buy one or just fund it to be made..its been a year now.
Thanks Jay... I have been looking at the video of this great invention and it intrigues me no end... another thought (LOL)... given that is prop driven, could there be a way to harness that energy .. similar to the way a wind turbine generator works?.... Cheers
That is true. We don't expect the video to be as stable given the small size of the drone, esp. if its a windy day.
How loud are these?
and what is the top speed?
Were to buy
This Gadget
Please
Rlp me
music of the video plz?

This technology is really promising, good effort!
I saw in your website that there is a variety of models, do all models have a camera?
I think it said it was optional.. maybe wrong on that
over 2 years later, and still cannot find it for sale anywhere =(
mit titanium framed wing on mosquito flew on a tether how many years ago ? ten about darphush
It said buy it now at indiegogo but where WHERE?!
One problem with this is that can be attacked easily in the air by a predator bird and bye dragonfly.
...But shure is great device I'm interested.
Wow! That is pretty awesome!!!!!
is there a return home function?
how about remote start function?
if there is then where can i get one
Instantly classified. Literally.. we'll never see it :)
how much will this dragonfly cost?
Where do you get this ausome robotic creature?wich shop?
noway is that dragonfly footage, i want to see gimbal?
Wow! I'll buy that! Need one with cam! How do I get one?
It's a scam ,they didn't really sell those
What's the typical battery life? Assuming that it's flying the whole time, using a camera and GPS?
I couldn't find anything specific for this on the main website.
I been looking at the website every time I look they have none for sale
I am very interested in having a dragonfly. How much will it cost?!
These guys never shipped anything. Pure vaporware.
will you create a human sized version for transportation ?
Glad I stumbled up in here!
Robotic bees for commercial use.
when is the techject coming in production
This is brilliant. Great job guys!
What is the battery life and how fast does it go?
Will these ever be able to be purchased indefinitely from your website? If so, when would the estimated time be?
How long does the battery last?
How do I get one. I'm in South Africa. What is the costs.
