  • While Fontaine has done a fantastic job of bringing new life to the game, burnout remains a common topic in the Genshin community.
I don’t have Genshin burnout, and still enjoy playing it every day. However, I’ve talked to a lot of people who do, or who aren’t enjoying the game as much as they did during the early days, but they’re always very reluctant to stop.
Why is that? Are there ways to avoid it?
And is it ever too late to quit Genshin?
While each person’s experience is unique, from what I’ve seen these feelings tend to be a blend of several things.
Let’s take a look at the most common factors, how a change of perspective on each of them can help rekindle the love for Genshin, and walk through one feature which can help people more easily make the decision to take a break - and why that can make it easier to come back and enjoy the game later on.

Something that got me out of genshin burnout was getting into lore and theories on it. The analyzing, the book reading, analysis of locations and their connections (chasm+enka+parts of fontaine). You get an ENTIRELY different view of the world once you really dig into what's going on in the background. 10/10 would recommend.

This is very true! It took me a long time to get interested in lore, but the more I rea dup, the more fascinating it is! Looking moredeeply into character back stories is also somethign that has made a huge effect on how I view characters - I really wish more of their personality and depth was shown through the story... Though I must say fontaine archon arc has done a great job of this!

This is how I feel about Honkai Star Rail, I feel like I'm not really enjoying the game only because it's something that people like and I want to have my experience to change, there's just so many things to grind especially when you're a new account and I get burnout quite easily, I shouldn't be wasting time on playing something I don't enjoy but what I like about Star Rail is mostly the characters, that is the main reason why I stick on playing it.

    • @jerryeljeremy7790

I think you got overwhelmed since I assume you want to catch up with everything in the game. But trust me when I say HSR isn't as punishing as GI when it comes to daily mission and farming. Take your time playing the game, I quit genshin because I don't have enough time to play it anymore but with HSR, I can use auto for farming and it just took me 1 hour to finish everything I need to do per one day.

I only need like ... 15-30 mins for everything in genshin ... so i dont think it is that timeconsuming at all. But i have to admit that trying to catch up with everything doesnt work that well in any game like genshin or honkai star rail, it just takes time.

    Good video and sound advice!
On the flip side, looking back at the games I once loved and stop playing, it usually boiled down to one of 3 things:
    - 1) It started to feel like a job just to log in and do the things I needed to do to keep up.
    - 2) The servers were dead with hardly anyone playing the game (so I moved on too).
    - 3) The developers took the game in a direction that was too hard or undesirable (such as increasing PVE difficulty too much or forcing PVP).
Overall it comes down to just how much a person is will to put up with when it comes to gaming. So I can understand burnout very well.
Summary: Tedious end game loops, decline in player base, and poor game direction are the three most common ways to drive people away from your game.

What you have said is pretty much accurate to the feelings of many players for genshin, but I have recently been looking at these things with a different perspective which helps me to break the cycle much quicker. I believe there is never a too late to quit any game because games are for FUN. No matter how much hours or money you spent on a game you don't have to think it was a waste to do so if you are going to quit because the hours and money you spent on the game were for the sake of enjoyment, sometimes we look at live service ongoing games as something that we should enjoy forever but in reality it exist for a long time because other players will want to join in and have fun later on. Just imagine you bought a PC and you know it wont last forever, and even if it did, YOU won't last forever to keep using it, even a snack is temporary yet we keep spending to eat more food and yet we don't regret it. Maybe look at it like this: when you spend time or money or both on a game, ask yourself if you had fun doing so, and if you did then it was not a waste, you got your money's worth and your time's worth, so moving on and taking a break should be no problem because you didnt just spend so much for the sake of the future but because you wanted to and got satisfaction out of it. So if you no longer having fun playing genshin even after spending so much time and money, then it would be the same as you finishing your burger or your car is super old and in need of a replacement, but the best part is, after a long break you could always come back IF you start to feel like playing it again. Sorry if my grammer or punctuation is off. I HOPE THIS HELPS TO VIEW QUITTING OR TAKING A BREAK IN A MORE HEALTHY WAY.

    Well said, everything.
I ran into a "wall" in Genshin two times. Once, still in 1.0 when I totally did not expect the Archon quest line will end and I suddenly had nothing to do in the game for pretty long and painful period. But I was still in the honeymoon phase so I persevered and learned my lesson. And second time it happened when I finished my goal of fully leveling up and equipping all of my characters. I'm no friend of artifact farming so it was feeling really bad when it was the only thing that was left for me to spend my resin on. But since I learned my lesson back then in 1.0, I was able to switch gears and fill my time with other activities. There's a lot of things to do in Genshin and I am not shy doing all of them. And yes, taking it slow is the key. I couldn't just explore to fill my commission meter, I would not enjoy that. But since I enjoy exploring by running randomly all over the world, it does not really take me that little time to 100% a region. Where I do limit myself is in quests. One quest per day is my official limit and I only break it if I finish some quest when I'm not aware I'm doing a quest. If the quest feels long, I split it over two or more days too. It does not completely cover the time between patches but it helps a lot.
While I am spending money on Genshin and I have spent hundreds of dollars since I started, I never "invest" in it. I always pay for the fun I already had and if that spending helps me have more fun in the future, it's a good thing. When I stop enjoying Genshin, I will definitely have no regrets about money I spent on it, it was worth it many times over.

the only time I feel like I’m “wasting” money on genshin is if i’ve bought a welkin and i don’t try to log in every day. So far i’ve played almost every day since i started, and while I do feel the urge to not miss out on the daily primos (resin i don’t really care about unless i’m in the middle of building a character that i’m impatient to try out), i try to remind myself that my enjoyment of the game matters more than primos. Thus when a few months ago i suddenly woke up remembering that i’d only done half my commissions i simply thought oh well and went back to sleep 😂

    • @saurusness
      @saurusness  6 месяцев назад +2

yeah one of the reasons I stopped buying the welkin in HSR is that *right now* it has lost some of it's charm for me, and this way I don't "have to" log in if I don't feel like it!
I also forgot to do the leyline event yesterday and honestly I felt so good about the fct taht I was like "oh well it's just some 15 wit w/e! As a gaming addict that just made me feel so functional😂

owwww this video hits really close to home 💜 as someone who already has taken multiple breaks over a span of two years of me logging in religiously and doing my dailies even if I'm on the brink of death, you don't miss out on anything by taking a break. on the contrary, I only really see the benefits. sure, you might miss a character banner or two, but then you log in for the first time in a while and you don't really think about it. the game sucks you back in and feels so wonderful and fresh and new and exciting, I'd rather be feeling that than the dread of logging in but still doing so just because I'm afraid to miss out on primos that I could use to get a character in the future. it was really scary to stop playing for the first time but it was unwaranted, I promise you that 💜

Sunk Cost Fallacy definitely kept me playing a lot longer than I was enjoying it. I started at launch, but ultimately quit during Dehya's release banner. Part of it was just that playing every day was a habit at that point, and part of it was definitely the "if I quit now, all the time/money I put in will retroactively be wasted," but pulling the plug was ultimately the right decision.
I just wish I could have come to that conclusion *before* spending a last bit of money for C1 Dehya. I was coping so hard that surely she wasn't as bad as people were saying and that C1 would solve her issues... but it didn't and I quit a few days later.

when i don't have anything to do in exploration i make a rule to not teleport during dailies unless a point is three or more teleport waypoints away. if it is less I walk through the game and enjoy that atmosphere music and sounds once again and it fills me up enough to enjoy genshin again with lots of passion. what I found out in a cruel way is that genshin impact has incredible open world yet.. it isn' really designed around constant exploration at all. maybe the only permanent exploration content is laylines but some players would surely prefer to ignore them at all costs to spend their resin on artifacts or weekly bosses which is reasonable at some point of view. what I would love genshin has made is two weeks given to re-do some old regional domains (the music from liyue domain is insane but we don't even experience it anymore even in the open world, that is a crime bring me neuvillette he gotta judge- ) & to make us casually engage with open world a bit more. at least force us to enkanomiya and the chasm underground idk, they are left out so much yet are so beautiful & the only reason I go there is made by myself - to collect some 1 star artifacts to power up 5 star ones. but it is copium for real. still, I enjoy the game a lot (yes by corium with no teleports and artifact collecting, who are you to judge me- ) and one day they will do something about it I do believe in that

I have burted out of genshin 3 to 4 times. Each lasting about a month or two, but the last 4th time lasted for a year. Playing from the first week of genshin, nowadays it's not as easy to burn out for some reason than it's used to be, when there was only 2-3 nations. Last time I burted out for a year I still didn't wanna hold the progress of my account, so I paid a guy I trust 50$ a month to play in my account every day for a year 💀 From now on whenever I feel I wanna take a rest, I will do that. I will pay someone to keep my progress going.
It's quite an experience to not recognize your own account when you come back after months of rest, characters, weapons, all maxed out. But the most important part, it's primos is way more than you left the account with

Here I am, 1.0 player who has never missed a day of login
The thing that burned me out the most was:farming and spiral abyss, I'm an exploration addict, I tend to 100% a region within a week of release and then I have a rule for myself to always finish quests within the end of the patch (sometimes I might save an hangout for an upcoming dry update)
How did I stay consistent? I just... Didn't do the things I didn't want to do, I didn't farm for months at a time, I was throwing absolutely the worst builds on my newest characters cause I couldn't be bothered to enter a domain, I wasn't doing the spiral abyss cause combat bleh, etc... Sometimes between opening and closing the game it would take like 10 minutes tops.
With a routine like that days were I felt more motivated and did more were like a reward for myself: look, you've farmed talent books, now you have what you need!
And very recently I've been back with newfound resolutions and am farming until I exhaust my resin every day, it took me a year of not forcing myself to do those things to get to this point though 😅

I've burnt out a bit of Star Rail with the latest event (it was very boring to me), so I took a little ~10 days break from the game, and now I feel much more motivated to play. So, that would be my advice to anyone feeling burnt out, just go on a little "holiday" from the game and maybe after that you will feel motivated again. i def agree with you, and sometimes it feels like hoyo's game plan is to capitalize off of people's FOMO, which can be incredibly frustrating. i'm grateful that's not the case as much in HSR with some recent changes, but it's still exhausting having so many games where you need to go in day in and day out just to maximize resin and primos. if i'm not feeling resin, i won't force myself to do it, which took a lot of reassuring myself to do. i have to respect myself if i'm in a slump and not push myself to go above and beyond if i'm not feeling up to it. that's how burn out happens 😮‍💨but usually the enjoyment comes back sooner or later! 🥰

i was about to dropped this game along time ago (after not playing it in a year). it was at patch 2.4. i got plenty of chars (hutao, shenhe, xiao, zhongli) and then i've already built them strong enough at the openworld until it feels like everything just die on 1-3 hits. i was really bored, like REALLY. not only because the adventure rank was ramps up quiet slowly at that time (54 to 55), but im a completionist (not that insane tho, which i cant see myself fishing a total of 2k fishes even till these days lmao). but then i remember what makes me hooked in this game, the story. i looked up many lore cc like Ashikai for a known example and absolutely love the game once more. not only that, i also love building my chars even if im not that minmax most dmg output kinda guy, but still, seeing a chunks of my chars growing stronger over the course of 3(?) years playing this game really is satisfying. i also dont wanna block myself with the pride of "im f2p in a gacha games wow im so good" kinda thing. i've spent alot of money, not that WHALE whale tho, just a feeble dolphin. And i never regret any dime i've spent on this game, and still continuing till today (yesterday i got haran after buying the battlepass for the 12nd or 13rd times i dont know, i forgor fr). And i can still see myself playing this game regularly til the end of its story.

As someone who play games since Nintendo era, I'm used to pay to play gaming. We have to pay for the console (which doesn't do anything else unlike PC or mobile phone) as well as the game catridges/CDs/DVDs, even the live service games back then are pay to play like OG Ragnarok Online and WoW via subscription. We use their service, we pay em, simple.
When I play games like Genshin, Honkai Impact 3rd, or HSR and spent money on em, I see it as a service fee just like how we pay Taxi, Uber, Bus, Restaurant, etc, not as a mean to purchase gacha currency. The good thing with the F2P gacha model is the flexibility on how much we want to pay for their service. When I quit HI 3rd, despite all the spending I've done in that game, there's nothing holding me back from leaving it (heck there is still 290k crystal + tons of supply cards unused in that account) because I know all of those payment I made are an obligation from using their service, while the extra crystals/etc we got from the payment are just bonuses.

    • @saurusness
      @saurusness  6 месяцев назад

Same for me! I find the battle pass + welkin to be a fair regular fee for the enjoyment I'm getting out of this game, and while I initially felt a little guilty (I have excess financial anxiety) for the few tops ups I did while desperately chasing some character or another, breaking down the spending vs hours of enjoyment is what helped me accept that that was ok! 😊

@@saurusness😂 I've never calculated the money spent vs enjoyment hour. Though IIRC the price of monthly subscription for OG Ragnarok Online is 25% higher than Genshin's Welkin Moon, and that's the price 20 years ago. In a sense Hoyoverse's monthly cards are a lot cheaper in today's currency compared to old live service games.

Once you complete a game it feels empty, developers just can't keep up with how fast players devour the content. It takes years for a big studio to make a AAA game and players can't burn through all the content in the game like a hot knife on butter in a matter of days if not hours. Live service games and especially gacha exploit players FOMO to keep them playing. But if you take a step back, it never too late to call it a quit (even if it's just temporary). Remember that regardless how beautiful and good Genshin is, eventually you're just renting png waifus/husbandos until the EoS.

    • @saurusness
      @saurusness  6 месяцев назад +2

I think that as long as it's bringing you genuine joy and that's why you keep playing (as opposed to because you feel like you "must" so you don't miss out), then there's no issue with it being your main or even only hobby! I have a tendency to hyperfixate on whatever my latest obsession is - and genshin has held a top 3 spot for over 2 years - but I'd wager sooner or later something else will likely draw your attention as well, or instead!
If it's any consolation my hobbies are basically 90% gaming, and my socialisation (beyond my partner) happens almost exclusively online, as I live quite a way away from any friends and family. I try to make sure I keep myself healthy by going out for a little walk every day, and I also aim to complete most of my chores and work *before* gaming in the evenings, but in my opinion, as long as you're not neglecting your health, responsibilities, and relationships, then Genshin (or any other game) is a great way to entertain yourself and I don't consider it a waste of time 🤗

Alas, I haven't read any books about these sorts of topics yet, these are just my musings and ways of dealing with things that have been plagueing my through processes for most of my life! I just tried to type in a sort of explanation for how these ideas/viewpoints came to be but I'm really struggling to put it into words in a comprehensible way that's not a 5000 word essay 😅
To summarise though fears of wasting money and time have been at the core of my being since childhood due to the environment and family I grew up in, and it has taken many years and a lot of reassurance from trusted loved ones to learn that for example (disposable) money is meant to be spent on things you enjoy. even the concept of disposable income was so completely foreign to me.
Likewise the thought that once you start something you have to commit to it or it was a "waste of time"; instead I've reframed my thinking as rather than seeing the hours you spent enjoying something as time lost since you could have been doing something you "clearly enjoy more", I try to just see it as "this thing brought me x number of hours of joy, and now I've experienced it and it's time to find joy elsewhere!". Letting go of a hobby or a passion is not giving up or quitting, as people we grow and change and with that our interests do too, and that's ok! Sometimes years later we'll rekindle the joy in something, but that's far less likely to happen if we put ourselves under pressure to do so 💜

YEah I think taking a break is a good idea! I have a friend who had a similar "burnout", and stopping playing for a month or two, and in that time sort of reframing your view of how mandatory stuff like dailies were really helped them! With the recent QoL, you can skip dailies and complete them by doing other gameplay; exploration (open chests), and doing parts of events or story quests/hangouts, all count towards the dailies!
For me general famring is pretty fun, but the thing that always borderline makes me hate this game is artefact farming, so I try to do it super casually by switching domains often and not looking for anythign specific, and then using all the crap fuel to level random pieces I've locked ovedr time.

Completion of character builds, spiral abyss, exploration, etc. I’ve been playing daily since launch and I still have yet to reach 100% on anything or anyone. I’ll probably get to those Mondstadt world quests eventually (or not), but taking it slow and enjoying whatever I’m in the mood for every day is why I’ve never felt burnout. It's never too late to quit addictions of smoking, booze, drugs, gambling, or Genshin.
You need to follow the old Nike tag line and Just Do It.

This video is about helping you get into the mindset where quitting addictions (this one in particular, but it applies in other scenarios as well) becomes possible, because it certainly isn't quite as easy as "just do it" for most people

Its not that hard, just take a break and you can come back when you feel like it/have time.
This is not to say that addiction is simple topic but actuall gameplay lever they have over you is 0.
You have somethint else to focus on it will be easy to quit and easy to comeback when you want

I agree it *shouldn't* be hard, but a lot of people genuinely struggle with that. Breaking those chains can be difficult for many, but once you do, it tends to lead to healthier habits overall!

@@saurusness genshin as a game has lot of these training tools to get you as pavlovs dog. Get that dopamine for 20 primos 60 primos a day slow and steady wins the race free 5star in few months. But the way you quit genshin is you get fed up with character leveling mechanics and just quit. As you realize getting new character just makes you farm all those mats you dont wanna farm and that he probably wont even be marginally stronger than what you already have.
Once you realize that you will not want new characters and play only if you want to.

What I enjoy from the game is overcoming the challenge they present for any kind of reward. And nowadays that doesn't exist. The "challenge" they present is nothing more but a joke, none of the new mob design is any good, it's just a bunch of time wasting behavior mob rather than actually challenging. If you're telling me to take off my artifact just so that I can feel that challenge again then you're already working backward, it's not supposed to be a player job to do that, it's their job, the devs, to present that for players, which they don't. What's the point of building character just so that you can just drop your artifact to get the challenge ? The real problem of this game is that the game has a very bad gameplay loop, and its reward is also bad, making it worthless to even try. Player going fast or slow is their own decision to do so, but eventually everybody will reach a point of having nothing to do regardless if they're taking it slow or fast, simply beause this game doesn't have a good gameplay loop to keep player engaging. Don't you put this blame on the players that this game flaw is not fixed after 3 years going into 4 years already. This video sounds like it made to make excuses for the devs doesn't do their job
