- Ayato is one of my all time favourite Genshin characters; I love his design, and his character, and enjoy his playstyle a lot, and yet for some reason it’s incredibly rare that I find myself bringing him out to play. He’s certainly strong enough, and comfortable to use, so why is it that he’s often so low down the list when I’m choosing a hydro character for my team?
While I primarily pull for characters based on how much I simply ‘like’ them as opposed to their talents or power level - and I very much like Ayato - there are other characters who I like just as much but chose not to pull for, since I knew they wouldn’t get much use.
So, keeping in mind how rarely I use him, if I didn’t have him already would I pull for Ayato now?

Agree about his beautiful design! I wish hoyo would give us the old quest stories to play through. Even without rewards. Since I started late, I feel like I barely know anything about him. And I wouldn't even think to go looking for that additional information. At least I got a smaller insight with this video. Thanks as always!

Ayato is closest to what I'd call "regret I pulled". Now, I don't really regret it. I had the primogems, I believe I won 50:50 on him, and I played him for a while with most fun having playing him together with Ayaka. But he just fell off and I never picked him up again. Even later when, trying to pull Staff of Homa, I got his signature weapon instead (and immediately leveled it up and placed it on him) I never returned to using him. I like his design but sadly it all ends there. If I did not have him now, I would not pull for him on his upcoming banner.
The thing is, however, that Genshin has tendency to "revive" old characters. Just like Jean is getting her time to shine now with Neuvillette and Furina, there's chance he will become relevant somewhere later, perhaps with Natlan. And maybe I'll be happy to dust him off and give him a run again.
I hope so too, and I hope he gets a second story quest that's has a little more of him and his interactions with others in it!
I also kind of regret getting Ayato simply because his play style is not that engaging. I skipped Neuvi for this reason even though I really like his design & personality so I see him as Ayato on steroids. Both are very good characters but I'm not strongly inclined to play either, which is a shame as Ayato has helped clear a lot of Abyss content before he was eventually benched.
I remember back then read rumors of him having a Burst that pulled enemies with a water vortex, oddly enough I was going to post "I haven't played him in a long time" but just remembered I played Mono hydro Ayato with Furina which was fun.
Another team where I found him fun was Ayato with Thundering Fury with Beidou, Kuki/Raiden and a Dendro Character, it's nice to get extended field time with Ayato's skill reduced cooldown.
He's a great pick for mobile players and in needed AoE scenarios.
I have a few units like this. I don't play them much but I like having them and don't regret it. It's perfectly fine to pull for a unit you just want as long as your budget (f2p or p2p) allows.

I randomly got Ayato at 16 pity today while trying to get a copy of Kirara lol!!! I was shook but thankfully I still have enough to guarantee his sister in 4.3 who I was originally planning for. He's honestly so satisfying to play and the sound design of his water garden is so beautiful. I have absolutely no regrets 🌸

ayato's skill (6s duration 12s cd) occupies half of a 12s rotation at most, while his burst (and its buff) lasts for most of a 20s rotation. if you play him like a hypercarry you're bound to get a little bored of it: he shines best as a co-dps.
during inazuma we got a handful of characters whose field time demands are conducive to this type of play: yoimiya (her burst is meant to buff the co-dps), raiden shogun, on-field charge attack yae miko; in sumeru we got deyha and arguably tighnari.
also here's an open question about building ayato these days: echoes of an offering adds frequent flat dmg bonuses based on his atk. flat dmg bonuses benefit a lot from dmg% bonuses like in ayato's burst. if we build ayato for use with furina, having him use an atk cup rather than hydro, should he wear echoes of an offering or marechaussee?
(additional consideration: for style points marechaussee lets him wear a crit dmg cup and use the anemone gucci)
in summary: i really appreciate his video because it made me want to go back to finding ways to make playing ayato interesting like i was before i got obsessed with dendro reactions a whole version ago! i hope if you take him up again you'll try him co dps style. also it's possible to strongbox echoes set now, just in case you end up liking it
I actually thought about trying Marenchausee set on him as well, especially since I really enjoyed him with Furina! He could probably just borrow Neuvillette's set and call it a day 👀
Also good point about strong boxing for EoO: I've still been converting all my junk to CW in the hopes of scraping together a 4pc one day, but alas no such luck!
tbh Ayato's story quest is the only one in all of Genshin that I got bored enough to skip
I never had that feeling of disappointment in Genshin before, I hope we will get a second story quest that serve justice for him
His story quest didn't even have a dedicated cut scene, hoyo has done him dirty :( I also hope he gets a better second story quest, he deserves far better!
It actually did have one, it was just us meeting him. Nothing special just that😂
I was so disappointed with how they handled his whole character that I never pulled for him and I just really dislike him now. I hate how he just shows up in the end of events all according to keikaku, he never appeared in the archon quest and his involvement isn't shown till his demo which is not in game so many people would never see it. His story quest is such a boring introduction to a character that I feel like was so hyped up to finally see.

Also good call, I think the silliest thing I did was go for practically every character on their debut, which back then meant I couldn't even build them all at once! Reruns will come back and I think spacing out acquiring new DPS characters especially is healthy :D
I see it this way: if you're a low spender or F2P, Ayato is a flexible pick but not a "must pull". His greatest points are that he is easy to build and use. His playstyle is easy. His damage is good to great, and his off-field hydro application is in a decent AOE. His artefact set is Gladiators, which is the easiest set in the game to farm and he has good F2P weapons like the Inazuma craftable sword. I know he's not the strongest in the game, but ease of use makes him strong by comparison. You'll probably use him as a DPS and hyperbloom/vape driver. He's so flexible you might even say he's the only hydro 5* you'll ever need.
Now... for the downsides: I think his biggest "flaw" is that he is so flexible that the niche hydro characters all outclass him in their niche. Neuveillette and Yelan for DPS, Tartaglia for Vape, Xingqiu for off-field application, and Kokomi/Mona for hyperbloom. So, the "problem" with Ayato is that if you have niche hydro characters, you'll probably use them and not Ayato.
Those are the pros and cons of Ayato and why I like him.
I pretty much like characters like Ayato actually. He is an example of jack of all trades, master of none archetype done well. He doesn't have a niche he excels at, but he has a great coverage in all types of content. He can be a burst support, DPS, enabler or anything you wish him to be, except for a healer lol. He's easy to build, easy to play and easy on the eyes. He is not a must pull, but I wouldn't call him a wasted pull either. He's a comfort pick that will do okay regardless of the situation. I've been using him a lot more now tbh, since latest content is centered around hydro. Not to mention this abyss rotation pretty much deemed childe international useless bc you have pyro lector's on one side and then simon on the other, unless your international team is hyperinvested and can spawnkill everything or smth. Meanwhile Ayato performs really well bc his usage is not reduced to only one team. So yeah, I would still pull for him now despite having every hydro character except for Nilou
Ever since I decided to make a video about him and I was racking my brain for why I don't him more - sinced I like him and he's good - I've been using hima lot more, including in this abyss as well! 😊
Ayato's hanging on for dear life in the meta. Still usable but you can always find someone better.

At this point, the only thing (aside from lack of primos) that is keeping me from pulling Ayato is the need to farm those gosh darn hand guards.
LOL I know your pain; because I used to do a hand guard collection round every day/every couple of days for weeks to feed to all my Inazumans (and thier bloody weapons!) 😅

I might be a bit bias because he was my first five star and I looove him so much but I still truly use him so much because how steadily strong he is. But I do also wish Hoyo would have showed him more. Till this day I feel like it's super sad that new players, and me (played over a year now) haven't seen him anywhere else than his own story quest. Yeah I definitely don't have regrets about pulling him, I love him lots! Definitely my top 10 favouite character designs precisely because his design is simple yet elegant and intricate 😍
You havent started during Inazuma poetry event? He also included in that event.
You’ve made a great video about Ayato and I do agree with the idea of him (almost) never being the most optimal choice for a hydro unit in your team; however, I just wanted to specify that the reason Ayato’s burst is regarded so well by the community, is because it’s scales (almost) quadratically, and has a huge AoE. This combines extremely well with ganyu’s and venti’s burst, making a freeze team with all 3 of them extremely efficient against huge groups of enemies.
Also, while his extreme versatility allows him to be played in almost any team, you didn’t mention what I believe to be some of his best teams, in particular you completely skipped bountiful chords bloom and soup.
Ayato is one of the best drivers for Nilou teams, having a huge AoE on his attacks but not fast hydro application. Allowing him to consistently hit all enemies and proc the dendro cores without overtaking the dendro aura. He’s also a great driver for Soup teams, where you mix hydro, pyro, electro and anemo to get a ton of different reactions. Ayato soup is usually ayato, Fischl, bennet and Kazuha.
Finally, I think ayato usually fits better in a dual carry scenario than as an hypercarry. His not too long on field demand allows him to be paired with others on field dps such as Raiden.

True I don't actually have Nilou so I never play bountiful bloom, BUT I have played Ayato/Ganyu duo DPS freeze which is honestly really fun!
Soup teams are probably my favourite genre of teams funnily enough, but admittedly I kind of think of those as "Sucrose teams" as she's always the driver in mine, and I tend to favour some of te other hydro's I mentioned in those teams (although yes you're right ayato does work great!) 😁
Great character, strong, and flexible…but for me I just don’t have a place for him because of all the other great hydro characters out there and I don’t like him ENOUGH to bench someone else for him. I completely agree with the philosophy of pulling someone because you love the character. This is why I got my Heizou to c6, not because it was smart, I just love to play him. Great video!

I think it takes a co-op team full of Ayatos 😎 You've definitely made me think that I could tweak my build a bit - I think I have Echoes of Offering on him but he could use the Gladiator passive and I have a bunch more stellar pieces in Gladiator than I did with his current set. This seems like something I would love artifact loadouts to test *cough cough* HoYo PLEASE! 🥺
yeah i have some really good gladiator pieces i've haorded over the years whereas even though i blew through about 20 fragile resins' worth in the EoO domain i have nothing to show for it 💀 (one good 2 piece but it's on ninguang LOL)

"The downside of having so many favourites and hoarding characters is that you simply cannot play them all at once." No truer words have I seen in ages. I have stated it earlier that I love Ayato for pretty much the same reasons as saurusness lists on the video and not ever have I been disappointed in him. I have him on my main account and he is a joy to play, yet I take him 'out for a walk' too rarely. There are just so many others that I also enjoy.
I am trying to pull him for my Welkin account and if I get lucky, I'll be happy. The F2P account I am putting my wishes on Cyno. I am aware of the poll results, but personally, I never was disappointed in Cyno either.
At this point I'm startign to think I need to set up a character rota where I "change mains" every week so everyone will get their fairly exercised 😂
Also same, I LOVE cyno! and his playstyle is actually precisely the sort of thing I'm drawn to; where you have to be conscious of timing things etc. It took me a moment to find the team(s) that felt really 'good', but once I found them he just became even more fun!
I started genshin on the first yelan banner and am still working my way through getting a lot of the older characters that I like, for a long time Ayato was very near the top of that list, whenever we get the trial version of him in an event I always have so much fun with his skill. But similarly to you, I got extremely lucky with early 50/50 wins on both Neuvillette and Furina, and have suddenly realized, I don't think I can justify using the primo's on his banner now, it feels like each time he comes out some random thing is keeping me from pulling him. I still want him, but I definitely will not get enough gems to get him and I'll definitely lose that 50/50 and I definitely want to pull my first raiden soon because I have missed my shot at her last time. I just can't justify another powerful hydro dps when I'm still rocking fischle and shinobu as my only 2 built electro units.
unrelated but kind of related, I can't justify grabbing cyno either when I haven't even got raiden and with her last banner being almost a full 12 months ago I know she is coming back soon. But I want copies of all the 4 stars on this banner, this is how I miss out on the 5 stars I want, a lack of self control

It's like how I always love using trial versions of Itto, and he's such a joy of a person, but I've so far skipped all of his banners, and just hope that maybe he'll come at a good time and I'll get super lucky!
Ayato is cool, but I already have Childe and I can only have 1 main dps of each element. But I do love Ayato's playstyle.

@@saurusness I only got the idea of obtaining main dps from every element because after getting Alhaitham, I got lucky with Childe then lucky again with Hu Tao. So I thought "why not just make this a thing?" Hahaha Now I'm eyeing for Cyno for that electro main dps spot.
i feel about neuvillette the exact same things you're describing feeling about ayato. i was super hype with him at first, i even pulled for his weapon with wishes i was saving to get c2 furina and then c2 nahida (worth it, totally BIS for a bunch of characters and now i'm using it on a main dps mona build which i freaking loooooove to use and i still got my c2 furina AND baidu or whatever he green snake guy is called, who i absolutely regret pulling for).
He's strong, but around the time his banner ended, i just out and stopped using him. i think his gameplay is absolutely dull. i just don't feel like bringing him to fight, ever. i don't regret pulling for him, but he'll be a bit like my itto: one of my strongest characters, but almost never gets to fight. (well in itto's case it's not because i don't enjoy him, it's because i think noelle is an upgrade in almost every way. but he's still essential for octa geo abyss runs)
but, yeah, since you love ayato and you're still saying this, i guess i'll stop pulling for him on my second account. baidu simps overly colorful descriptions of his usefulness baited me into getting him (i honestly think he's worse than yaoyao thanks to his hp scaling on a dendro character without which he heals like a wet bandaid), but your realistic views on a character you like actually got me out of another trap. so thanks for the video.
I usually default to Ayato over Yelan, mostly because Yelan's character design makes me cringe every time I have to use her. She has my least favorite character design next to Shenhe and Eula.
I wasn't initially super impressed by her (Yelan) design either tbh - I didn't hate it but it didn't catch me like 😍, same with Shenhe, and I also don't really care for Eula's design, so I see what you mean! But her playstyle was I think hand crafted for me specifically - probably mostly due to the zoomies hahah - and I think tha is primarily what makes her my favourit to play!
Ayato is the copium version of every other hydro character. He's just not good enough in any niche but he'll work. When there's a plethora of hydro characters already, all with their own unique strengths, Ayato becomes obsolete if you have at least 2 hydro chars to play.
the only good hyrdo I have is yelan and xinqiu, I have XQ in my cyno team and I need another team for abyss(I have no other dps). Should I pull?

@@xxqino Ayato dps is pretty mediocre unless you spent some $$$ on him to get 5 star weapons or cons. Yelan in general even with an f2p build has higher damage than Ayato so I don't see a reason to pull Ayato. Especially since you can save for Neuvillette now if you want a dps and another hydro character. I would say Ayato would get benched immediately if you ever decide to pull for another hydro character.
@@DadOfB01 Jack of all trades is also a very copium saying. Most of the other hydro characters can also play in almost every other hydro team archetype. Ayato is just brain dead easier than them to do so while giving you the feel that you're playing an on field dps.

My scuffed team of Ayato, Furina, Jean, and Kazuha easily cleared the first halves in under 1:30!
Honestly, I regretted pulling Ayato at first because Yelan came out in the very next patch(and she would've been much more value to my account). Because of this, he has pretty much stayed benched until now. Now that Furina is out, I found that mono hydro teams are SOOO FUN. Ayato is underrated fs.

YES to mono hydro, also the Fruina/Baizhu or Nahida/Kuki or some other EM electro/Ayato I mentioned is actually fab and a nice take on hyperbloom where Ayato also gets buffed a little!
Agree with the braindead playstyle. But! Thats the reason i use him more often when the world is overwhelming enough. Whenever i give my account to my boyfriend to watch over it while i have no time cause of work or even to newbies to test the game out, i always provide a team with ayato first and tell them to test other characters out after that if they want to. Well I can understand why my account specifically is frightening for some cause I started out with hutao and tartag…
You should try Ayato, Nilou, Baizhu and Nahida. It's a great Bloon comp
Alas Nilou is one of the few 5 stars I don't have at all 😅 If I ever pull her I will though!
i think people tend to forget that ayato is a jack of all trades, good at everything but not the best at one thing
That's a very good way of describing him actually. Very much like Diona; never my first choice for shielder, healer, battery OR EM buffer (c6), yet if you want a flexible all in one package then she's right there!
i still love ayato even i have Neuvi, i still use him. i'm glad having him back then and still glad that i pull him and his weapon
I wanted to get Ayato before, but now I already have a hydro DPS (Neuvilette). The other limited 5* are actually just hydros lmao which are Yelan, Kokomi, Furina
I feel so bad skipping the character that I've wanted to get before, but if I get him over getting lets say Nahida or Alhaitham, my acc would be Hydro Impact
I'm all for hydro impact but I think skipping is the smart decision - perhaps on a later rerun when you've collected some other elements/roles (especially nahida)! 😁

I love the character design too. I feel like he is the modern sophisticated samurai, an idealised figure - a skilled warrior, diplomat, family oriented, dutiful, elegant, but also not out of touch with "real life" and issues of an ordinary person.
However, I am really not a fan of his playstyle, and that kind of comes first when playing the game. I'm not going to intentionally pull for him, but I won't be sad if he accidently comes home when I'm building pity or pulling for a 4 star on his banner.

Ayato is one of my favourite characters, yet I play him less and less. Why? I have 69 characters and, beside Childe, i have all the hydro characters. Yes the competition is serious. Especifically since Neuvillette's arrival. Yes the mighty Neuvillette applies less hydro but his damage are ridiculous.

What's important is he still carries my abyss runs. At the end of the day it's about completing the content anyways.

I think you got it all mixed up with Ayato and Itto. The community never wanted Ayato to be muscular, that was Itto.
OMG I LITERALLY GOT AYATO AT 30 EARLIER,THIS JUST MADE ME REALIZE THAT I COULD'VE GOTTEN FURINA IF I TRUSTED MY GUT FEELING,BUT MY DUMB ASS WAS PLAYING IT SAFE AND GOT AYATO BC I WANTED KUKI SHINOBU,I LITERALLY ONLY GOT C0 KUKI,I wanted her bc I prefarmed everything for her,but now I have to go farm for ayato too lol,since my Kuki is already level 90 rn,but anyways I was a ayato simp so I'm kinda happy that I got him early,but I was saving my guarantee for Raiden or Ayaka,but now I'm gonna have to pray that I win the 50/50 on Raiden's banner bc so far I keep losing all my 50/50's 😭
The only reason why I'm not so mad that I got him,is bc he's HELLA versatile and he's good with Kuki too,so it's kinda a win lol😻

i do like his style and gameplay allot and but i thought that i wont have time to build him and only did a 10 pull for 4* that i wanted constelations for but insted on 30 piti after geting furina got duble (dehya, ayato)back to back so now i got 2 new characters that i like and have to build. at this point i think hoyo wants to tell me something and if anyone has any ideas what that myth be do tell.

I was a Honkai 3rd player, for me it's an obligation to pull for Ayato because his JP VA is Otto's VA 😂.
Anyway, I'm the kind of player who only pulls on character that I liked + their signature weapon, except Kokomi, Nahida & Kazuha weapon. It comes naturally that my available 5* & 4* roster isn't as big as most players. Besides Ayato, so far I only pulled for Yanfei, Ayaka, Yoi, Raiden, Yae, Kazuha, Kokomi, Nilou, Nahida, Alhaitham & Furina.
So yeah, still use him every now and then in Abyss & overworld since his debut in 2.5😂. Very good in overworld, tall male model equals faster travel time, strong & wide E with low CD to clear camps of mobs & elites alike. Very good for 36* Abyss cause Hydro & good in both ST/AoE damage, works well with lots of characters in my not so big roster, has off field AoE Hydro which is good for some teams. Pretty nice.
I used to feel the exact same way about Ayato, but recently I started playing him in Nilou bloom and it's been a freakin TREAT. Ayato Nahida Nilou Baizhu feels so good! Ayato is on full EM with a fav just for ER stat and enough total ER to burst every rotation. He feels so impactful on field and his burst is actually super useful in this team. I used to play Kokomi Nilou but this Ayato team feels much better to me, because its lovely Ayato plus I don't have to compromise between EM and HP/Healing Bonus on Ayato as I did for Kokomi. So overall if you enjoy Nilou bloom, I strongly recommend this team!
9:45 literally me with Ayaka. She’s great and I can talk hours about it but somehow I just stopped using her at all
Ayato was on my list of people maybe to get on a rerun, but now that I’ve got Neuvilette I just don’t feel like I need him, and while I don’t dislike him I just don’t have any particularly strong feelings about him. Furina sadly evaded me (still happy about my Baizhu though!), so I’ll see if I save my guarantee for her rerun or if someone will tempt me before then 😅
Guys there is a bug...if you havent started ayato story quest ......unclock the story quest go to the kamistao commison room...there you can see a intro for ayato ....after that do 2 pulls first then one 10 pull....you will surely get ayato....... GUARANTEED.........(IF YOU HAVE NOT TAKEN FURINA)

Both Cyno and Ayato are still pretty good characters But I feel like these characters aren't exactly your the best picks, However if you love the characters personality and designs then definitely go for them, As someone who's lost my 50/50 on Furina's banner, these guys are a skip in my personal opinion, I feel like they're next reruns will definitely be there chance on being pulled by me.
Yeah definitely agreed - if you love them as a character then they're more than good enough to be worth pulling, but if you don't then easy skip! Great 4 stars on the banner though 👀
It's true, the bets characters really to pull for are all the universal supports who will lift up every team, and these specific carry DPS types - especially ones of elements with a lot of diversity - are best saved for when you have the spare wishes and no one else on your mind (or you simpl like them a lot!) 😁

I think with both childe and neuvi he might not add anything "new" to your account per se, since even though they have their different strengths, they can all largely serve a similar role.. but on the flipside as somene who will hoard favourite characters regardless of how much I "need" them, I'm always going to reply with: if you like him, you should get him because he's certainly good enough 😂
That said, if you have other characters you want that you're still missing, then being consious of your primogems is a good idea. In a situation like that I usually say; why not throw a couple of 10 pulls at his banner to see if he comes early, and if not, save the rest to make sure you can guarantee someone you want more! 💜

I did not pull for his current rerun,issue is it is bad timing to me I am saving for arleccinho and currently have 61 interwind fates, I have wished for Furina and baizhu.
To me if I have ayato I will build him with golden troupe artifacts.
I pulled for Neuvilette but I still find myself going back to Ayato. Now I wish I had pulled for Furina instead. But Eh. Atleast neuvilette is one daddy off my wishlist.

Hoyo know I don’t want him and cyno all what I want is xianling and kuki g c6 in’s I swear I prayed to lose like every time but no I got him first 10 pull w 2 kuki and I tried on cyno I got him in 20 pull so my xianling c4 and kuki c2 I stopped and I regret my 13k primo is gone bc I was gready 😭
That's always how it goes; they know what you want/don't want 😩
Thankfully c4 is the one that matters for Xiangling, and c2 is Kuki's best con, so at leasy you have the important ones! And two 5 stars with 'only' 13k primos is very good luck (I know that's small consolation right now, but you mgiht end up liking them after all!) 💜

I'll admit I was one of the people disappointed by Ayato. I don't know what I was expecting, but with Ayaka being my favorite character, maybe he was always doomed to not meet my expectations. 😅
I didn't pull him largely because of what you said about him being too simple. He just didn't feel engaging to play as.

If u like complex characters and complex team set up then Cyno is the best for U I feel like...He is complex gameplay wise compared to so many other characters he can only be played in aggravate/quickbloom/quicken teams. He is very particular about his supports too and Cyno is like the perfect end game veteran player character new players getting cyno thinking they will do amazing DPS because Cyno is a DPS will be fked. Recently with Furina I feel Cyno finally feels complete....Cyno, Nahida, Baizhu and Furina this team is a boss killing machine and even works great in AOE if u can time Cyno's Duststalker bolts perfectly that is.💯💯
YES very true, I love Cyno's playstyle, and it took me some searching to find the 'right' supports for him, but once I did his gameplay is exactly the sort of thing that keeps me engaged 😁

Ayato is a cool character but sadly has been power crept by Neuvilette.
Easy answer: no! I know its up to your account and preference, but if youre looking at from a damage perspective, You may want other characters who are also as strong or even stronger than him + better gameplay and rotation. Even if you say you dont “like” them, pretty sure youll like them eventually bc theyre just strong and relevant like that.
If youre still indecisive of pulling on him, i suggest use 30 pulls on his banner. If he comes home, then yay, if not, then skip lmao
Ayato vape team is copium. Missing a lot of damage opportunities. Yeah you may say his pretty aesthetic but gameplay wise, it so suck.
It's not his best team no, but that said I wouldn't say it "sucks" per se, there are simply far better options if you have the characters so it will likely not get much use!
