Ford F-150 Shift Cable Bushing Replacement

  • This video outlines the steps and method I used to replace the small plastic bushing that connects the transmission linkage cable to the gear selector. My 2006 Ford F150 FX4 crew cab all of a sudden would not shift out of park into any gear. I discovered the cable was disconnected from the gear selector and saw what was left of the disintegrated bushing inside the console. I obtained a kit from the local auto parts store and made the repair. This video covers the entire process. If you have any questions or comments please leave them below or email me at gregsshopfl@gmail.com
    Thanks for watching!

    Best video so far! I have an '04 Lariat F150. My cable came loose at the transmission. I did check the shifter side first. All fine there. The big ticket item is the Dorman replacement bushings. part #14057. $15.00 at Advance Auto Parts. Aside from vacuuming out around the shifter console in cab, I put a hydraulic jack under the driver side suspension, a light, a flathead screw driver, and a set of vise grips. Cleaned out the remnants of the old bushing with the flat-head, squeezed in the new (clear color) bushing with the vise grips, and snapped it into place on the tranny shift lever with my fingers. Easy. I thought I could do it with the tranny in park. Before snapping the cable onto the tranny, I had an alignment issue. By manipulating the shift lever on the trans, I found where the truck would start in neutral, then I put the shifter in cab to neutral. (all this done with the parking brake set). With the tranny and shifter in neutral, the cable and the tranny lever lined right up. Snapped the cable onto the lever and I'm rolling again! This video probably saved me about $500 if you consider a wrecker bill and a shop charge for, at least, a new cable! ...and God forbid you fall into the hands of a shyster, wanna sell you a new shifter too! Thanks for the video, it was GREAT!!!

    awesome! my shift gear slipped all of a sudden but then wouldn't get out of park. So I switched the break switch, that wasn't it. then i replaced shift lock mechanism, that wasn't it. checked fuses, that wasn't it. BUT then check the shift cable bushing connection and sure enough that was it. THEN I thought I was good, but later during the day the shift gear slipped again. I'm just glad this video exists and now I am confident knowing what parts I need and easy fix. it will just take time undoing the console shift area. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

    Good video; it helped me out a lot! When I first felt the stick loose and not shifting I was like, Oh great now my transmission if out!! Luckily I removed the top panel and saw the problem. Just drove home with my hand holding the two pieces together. Looked online and saw your video and was relieved it was a relatively easy fix. I wouldn't have tried to remove the entire shift assembly if it weren't for your video. So glad I did remove it! The process was much easier. To disconnect the linkage cable form the shift assembly I went through the side panel that you removed later in the video. There is a small piece that holds onto the assembly which is much easier to move from the side panel. I saved a lot of money by doing it myself and only having to replace a small bushing. Again, very good video! Thanks!!

      I had a hard time seating it. I had to really force it in but it finally did go. I think someone wrote a comment describing the same thing but they sanded it down to make it fit but I’m not sure I would do that. It’s meant to fit tight and may require a tool to “force” it in to place.

    What was the best way to get the broken bushing out?

      In my case it disintegrated. All of the bits either fell out or I used a small metal pick like a dental tool to remove what was left. Thanks for watching!

    I have a 2004. The shift stick is loose ,won't shift, & after I "put it in park" & turned it off, won't start. Did u have this problem? I'm wondering if I should look into the neutral safety & nevermind this?.

    • @GregsShop
      @GregsShop  5 лет назад

      No I did not have this issue. Can you turn the key and shift the lever into any gear? Do the brake lights come on when you depress the brake? It could be a few things. Check the obvious stuff first. Make sure the shifter is solid in park.

      My shifter would move because it was disconnected from the shift cable. I would verify that the vehicle is definitely in park. After that, I’d look at the safety

    Can a worn out bushing cause the car to fail to shift into reverse from park? I know the bushing is still attached, but when I got into the detent for reverse, the truck was still in park. I put the shifter back to park and more diligently moved the shifter into reverse, almost going a bit beyond reverse to be sure the transmission moved from par into reverse, and I was good. There is definitely slop in the shifter.

    • @GregsShop
      @GregsShop  6 лет назад

      Hey Zach, thanks for your comment and for watching the video. So what I have experienced with my truck is similar to what you have explained. It definitely felt very sloppy before the bushing completely disintegrated and disconnected from the cable. After I replaced the bushing it tightened up quite a bit. It still has the feel of a worn shifter as the detents don't seem as positive as a new vehicle but that was to be expected. I would inspect both ends of the shift cable because both ends have a plastic bushing. Both of yours may be bad. Also, in the console, there is a slot that secures the cable into the shifter assembly. That must be snapped in and secured to the assembly. If it is not snapped in, that may be the source of the extreme slop too. look at my video in the 5:10 mark, this is the location where that cable attaches to the shift assembly. Let me know what you find and how you fix it. Thanks, Greg gregsshopFL@gmail.com

      Greg's Shop I found out that the 5R55S transmission has issues. With the housing they have to be rebuilt with new servos and a sleeve kit put in the housing along with other things in the transmission it’s best to have the hole transmission gone through and replace everything that is worn out or you will just end up back in the transmission shop. Even if you got bad sensors the vehicle will still go into gear. If it won’t go into gear there’s 2 things it could be bushings on the shifter rod or the servos in the transmission. Unfortunately in my case it’s the servos my transmission will need overhaul with new parts and a sleeve kit put in the transmission. Thank for you your video it dos help in a world full of chuckling and jiving transmission mechanics lol 😂

    Had same exact problem fixed bushing but now the p, r, n, d dont line up correctly. Anywhere to adjust them to align correctly? Did you have this problem?

    • @GregsShop
      @GregsShop  5 лет назад

      No I did not have that problem. You may have to take the shifter assembly out and look at the mechanism that identifies which gear you are in. I am not aware of a way to adjust it. In fact, if you need any part of that shifter assembly replaced, you have to replace the whole thing. At least from Ford anyway. Not sure if you can take the shifter apart to get the gear selector to line up.

One for the part you are trying to replace and the other one for the lower linkage. Consider using a small amount of grease on the bushing. That couldn’t hurt.

      @@GregsShop I'm not sure what it is called, but if you look at 4:42 of the video . The white plastic button on the left of the shift housing, I assume its an override to what you mentioned. I have to manipulate mine to get the truck out of park.

    • @GregsShop
      @GregsShop  4 года назад +1

      That white button is used to unlock the shifter in situations where the vehicle needs to be towed and can’t be put in to drive or the interlock solenoid is not working. That sounds like that is what your issue is. You can google the interlock solenoid for your model year. Should be around 50 bucks at the parts store. To test to see if yours is working, start the truck and step on the brake. You should hear and feel a click. If you don’t, I would start at that solenoid and of course check for power at that plug. Beyond that I’d make sure the brake light switch is functioning and all related fuses and relays. I’d start at the interlock solenoid first. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

      @@GregsShop Thanks, I will look into that. Also I was able to luckily change my bushing out in a few minutes without removing the shift module. I had enough room on the right side with a small pair of pliers and a small metal ruler to use as a flat surface to press the new bushing in. Thanks again for your fast informative replies.

    from 3:09 to 3:11, how does the cable release from the shift assembly? Unscrew, twist?

    • @GregsShop
      @GregsShop  4 года назад

      The only attachment it has to the shift assembly is the press fit bushing being replaced. The cable flange is attached to the metal support for the center console. It slips into a groove in the support. There's no need to remove it unless you are replacing the shift cable.
