    Another option if you don't have a large enough piece to form a bed is to plane down a thicker piece to a known value (say 0.5") then use double-sided tape to attach the material you wish to plane. Simply make the according height adjustments and you're good to go

    If you have very many pieces to plane that thin, it might help to wax the planer bed spacer piece to allow easier travel of the workpiece.
