As someone who is very hard on drivetrains 10 speed is still the best value for me. Saint shifter, M5120 derailleur and 11-46 M4100 cassette. Can't go wrong!
From my experience riding in an area with long, steep climbs, the shimano alloy cogs do not last very long at all. After the first chain, the shifting deteriorates to a similar level as other drivetrains. Part way through the second chain, the alloy cogs will start missing shifts and jam. You'll only be able to get a third chain life out of it is you are very fastidious with keeping your drivetrain clean and check your chain often. this comes from killing two XT cassettes in an 8 month period. I complained about this directly to shimano, they recommended running a smaller chainring to stay off the alloy cogs. Essentially their design philosophy is that you're not supposed to use the entire cassette. For me, that would equate to running a 28t chainring(28x39 roughly equates to my usual 34x45 gear for steady long climbs). Not going to happen! the whole point of running 12spd for me is to get a larger gear for xc racing(34t-36t chainrings). I've gone back to 11spd with with zero issues.

@@TheNickbb10 Shimano does want the riders to use all the gears but most riders use the more extreme gears a lot less, so it's usually fine if they wear a bit slower. But of course everyone rides a bit differently. If you want to race XC and ride lots of long, steep climbs on the same drivetrain, that may just not be the best drivetrain for you. But it does work great for many other riders and for those more steel cogs would be unnecessary. Luckily there are other options, as mentioned here and on this channel we learned that Shimano and SRAM 12s components are pretty much completely compatible with each other to give you even more options.
@@LoveMTB Yes, i may swap out the crank to SLX for whatever reason Giant put on Praxis cranks they must have ran out of Shimano parts, not sure about Praxis.
I have this. Works fine. Also have Sram GX which clearly feels nice over all. I now have Shimano brakes on all bikes. I don't like that the first 15 mm or so does nothing. If you bleed Sram brakes correctly and adjust them you can remove all unwanted "free stroke". I don't think that is possible with Shimano?
I built a 11 speed 11 50 setup recently. Sold it. Buyer removed the cassette and mech and went with a 11 speed 11 42 due to weight. He went with a sram xdome cassette and medium cage. He said bike is better to ride and rear suspension feels better and mech isnt hitting stuff anymore. Bike is 27.5.
I've already watched this video around 5 times out of my excitement to receive this cassette. In our country, there was a promo which included the m6100 cassette and chain for just 110 dollars. I'm excited to experience the hyperglide+ shifting since I am currently using a SRAM NX Eagle cassette which I feel doesn't shift as good as the Shimano cassette does. BTW, should I apply a liberal amount of grease on the freehub during installation? I've read articles concerning creaking on the freehub.
@@LoveMTB I bought the AbsoluteBlack Oval Chainring made for Hyperglide+ chains! If it's okay to ask, what kind of grease should I put on the microspline freehub? Should I use regular grease instead of the DT grease on the bearing seal covers?
Great video and thank you so much for sharing, very well executed as always. I have been watching a lot of your videos and have learned so much. I am tempted to replace my Sunrace 11-51T on my Kona with the Deore 10-51T, only because the shifting is not the best compared to shimano. The bike has the Deore RD-M6100-SGS but the sunrace is not perfect and I did watch your video on the Sunrace but unfortunately I cannot get the shifting to be perfect. The only issue with the shimano cassette is the bigger ratio spacing between cogs (gear steps) compared to the sunrace which I find great for commuting. Cheers
Great comparison - my Ripmo AF came with the Deore and I had been wondering if the cassette was something to consider for future upgrade, but if weight is the only difference then I'll spend the money elsewhere
Theres more than this difference for sure. The shifting in thw XT cassette is much much smoother than the SLX cassette. Every bike Ive tried swapping the cassette too, no matter the shifter or derailed, has a noticeably better shift with the XT cassete. We’ve now tried 3 different XT cassete bikes and have narrowed it down to the actual XT cassete being the difference in the feel. Derailers ahifter or chains did t make a difference when swapping them around. That said, SRAM 12 spee GX and SX is not in the same ballpark when it comes to being smooth.
@@LORENZindustries With respect, the only difference between 12 speed XT and SLX is the alloy 11th cog. every single other part of the cassette is completely identical. If you are getting better shifting that's great but it's not really the cassette making the difference
Im using an old 11-46 10 speed shimano. Still love it, and have been looking at 12 speed for the futute. My SunRingle wheel already has a XD freehub ready to install, I dont think micro spline is available. I recently installed shimano slx 12 speed on a friends bike. I am not a fan of all the loose cogs. We ride dry desert trails and feel it is more possible over time that the wear will be more on loose cogged micro spline over one piece Sram.
Have you had any instances with the Shimano cassette lockring stripping threads? When I removed mine, the threads basically snapped right off. It is really hard to find replacements
@@LoveMTB a bit off topic but are the seals on the XT 12 speed RDs any good? Just checked mine today and saw water and a bit of dirt inside the clutch mechanism. Thankfully one of your videos had a guide on how to clean the clutch assembly.
I think Sram has huge disadvantage of cassettes being a one piece. Yet at the same time having zero biting-in issue is nice too. I recently folded a tooth on 13t cog on a Sunrace cassette and replaced it no problem with shimano cog. No one want's a small cog like that, to be missing a tooth. With Sram it'd be either stuck with the problem or waste a cassette. Also nice to see Deore cassette being under 600g, but still it's a porky one.
8 or 10 tooth jump (42 to 50 or 52) no thanks. Switched to Shimano and have never looked back. I wish SRAM would make a new cassette with less of a tooth jump at the top. great video
Do you have any experience with the Garbaruk 10-52 cassette? It's lighter and cheaper than the XTR cassette, plus it only has one aluminum gear so it should be more durable as well. I'm worried about the shift quality though.
Thanks for the video. I'm planning to use an NX cassette with XT shifter and rear derailleur, SLX M7120 or XT crankset on my Trek Marlin 7 HG Freehub. I've already upgraded to 4 piston SLX brakeset. Do you know how the shifting would be? And any chain you'd recommend?

Sunrace CSMZ903 is 12s cassette 11-51 is better option than cheeper sram NX and SX cassettes because of the gear range. Sram has big gap from 42-50T/52T and because of that it is very hard to do longer climbs on 42T but too easy on 50T/52T. Sunrace has same gear range and uses standard shimano freehub body for 10 and 11s as shimano cassette and it has 46T which is perfect balance for long climbs, not too hard and not too easy.
hey i love you channel! Can you review the polish cassettes from #garbaruk? HG 12-Speed and Mircospline 12-Speed run with Deore/SLX/XT/XTR derailleurs?
I just had bad experience with Garbaruk. Ordered in Aug 2021 Garbaruk 10-52 Microspline 12 speed cassette. Has been waiting till October because they have 2 months delays. Few days ago received cassette and installed instead of stock Deore 10-51 and could not tune shifting for a several hours. Even my mechanic couldn't tune good shifting on Garbaruk cassette. We tested on new chains, chain length was according to Shimano manuals. On Deore\XT shifting is great, but on Garbaruk it didn't work. I wrote to Garbaruk support and they answered like "I’m terribly sorry to hear that, Unfortunately, we just realized that we manufactured a short batch faulty Micro Spline cassettes. We fixed the issue and will send you a new one." Ha-ha, no thanks, I don't want to continue this tune quest with new cassette, asked to refund and returned faulty cassette back. I'd better order XT 10-51, of course it's a bit heavier than 335g but it works smooth and clear as it should!
The fact that Shimano uses replaceable small cogs, makes them the best by a mile. I mean it's not even close. You cannot wear out bigger cogs enough to cause shifting problems, basically ever, it's always the small cogs.
what would you recommend in terms of durability? I snapped a tooth in the aluminium sprocket in the SLX today, 5 months old so pretty disappointing, and wondering if I should go for the Deore? it cost the same as SLX, otherwise go for the XT for a little extra money, but worried the aluminium sprockets would be as weak as the SLX one I have, thanks!
@@LoveMTB yeah I figured that. I wasn't sure if the XT were made with higher quality aluminium? but if they are the same as SLX I might as well go for the Deore, since I don't mind the extra weight. You mentioned that the Deore has a cheaper looking finish, any idea if they are different than the others?
@@LoveMTB Yeah fair point! i know what you mean and I'm always careful when shifting under load, but when happened I was already in the 12th gear, so not sure if the chain snapped first causing the tooth to break or the other way around. I wonder if I should get 11 speed Deore cassette or 12 Speed, I would need microspline if I go for 12 speed. I already have a Garbaruk 11speed 11-50T on order. how was your experience with Microspline freehub? the Deore 11 speed is the only shimano wide range cassette i stock in Norway. and only 6 Deore Rd in stock. so I think I will get it before it's gone. I think it's great that deore comes with microspline hubs as it makes it much easier and cheaper to upgrade a new bike that came with this deore drivetrain. @@LoveMTB I have Cube Attention SL's with the M6100 12 speed Deore set. retail price is €899,- with a Rockshox Judy air fork. If you can find one in stock for MSRP. Which is very rare with current covid cyclers and everyone jumping on the stock. Honestly it's a lot of bike to start with for the price. Problem is only the M6100 12 speed is microspline. The cheaper Deore 10 or 11 speed still use the traditional freehub ofcourse as you know. But that does make it confusing for potential buyers. As Manufacturers will use cheapskate garbage freehubs on the entry M4xxx deore stuff. But consumers see shimano Deore and think they got a bargain compared to an M6100 bike. While in the end they shot themselves in the foot. Example the Attention is €799,- with 2x10 with tourney freehub at the rear. The Attention SL has a Deore Freehub because tourney is incompatible with the 10-51 casette.
The slx m7100 chain doesn't seat firmly around the 12-speed cassette. There is very very little room for adjustment and everything must be perfectly set for this shimano to work w/o noise and/or chain skip. The 11-speed deore's chain sits much more firm onto a deore 11-speed cassette and is more stable and seemingly better quality, just in my experience.

Great videos! Thanks. What is the reason you recommend buying the most expensive chains?
@@LoveMTB Thanks!!
Cheers
🙏 and I think you’ll be fine with the Deore, just make sure you use a Shimano chain to take advantage of the HG+
@@LoveMTB The chain is shimano Deore I will persevere with the Sunrace for a while and down the track will give the Deore cassette a go.
Would really love to see a video about 12s Shimano hubs. Slx, Xt, and XTR.
I haven’t seen this one, thanks!
Isn't steel gonna last longer than aluminum?

@@LoveMTB thanks for that. But the price is still prohibitive. Most likely look fora new wheel with micro already fitted.
Have you had any instances with the Shimano cassette lockring stripping threads? When I removed mine, the threads basically snapped right off. It is really hard to find replacements
First!! Notification squad 😍. Btw, would you recommend this over the GX 1052?
@@LoveMTB a bit off topic but are the seals on the XT 12 speed RDs any good? Just checked mine today and saw water and a bit of dirt inside the clutch mechanism. Thankfully one of your videos had a guide on how to clean the clutch assembly.
@@LoveMTB On your video, you used dumonde tech freehub grease for the roller clutch. What type of grease did you add to the rubber seal?
i see deore on a lot of budget bikes now, it's great and far better than sx/nx
Yeah, it really is
I think Sram has huge disadvantage of cassettes being a one piece.
@@LoveMTB yeah, that's what I was thinking as well.

Hello towards the end of the video you recommend buying the most expensive chain you can get. Why is that? Thanks
Thanks I thought so. I read on a

I'm going 12 speed next year. Xt got cheap enough 👍🏻
Have fun!
I went from a pretty cheap 3x9 to 1x12 GX Eagle and never missed the extra gears.
As long as there is a 10T cog, 12 speed is great. Otherwise I'd be missing the faster gears.
@@sebastianjost that's the reason for me pretty much. I want to run 30t front and have 10t rear.
I'm even thinking about e'therteen cassette as they run on sram hub and 9t cog
My Scott 980 came with the 6100 and its perfect for XC riding. My only thought is can I change the crank size from 32 to 34 or even 36?
Do you think for e bikes it's better to stick with the deore because it's all steel?
Sunrace CSMZ903 is 12s cassette 11-51 is better option than cheeper sram NX and SX cassettes because of the gear range. Sram has big gap from 42-50T/52T and because of that it is very hard to do longer climbs on 42T but too easy on 50T/52T. Sunrace has same gear range and uses standard shimano freehub body for 10 and 11s as shimano cassette and it has 46T which is perfect balance for long climbs, not too hard and not too easy.
Great info!
very detailed 👏 GodBless
hey i love you channel!
Does a budget Microspline cassette really make sense? If you have a microspline hub, you can probably afford to go SLX or up.
For me its not all about the initial cost or the weight, its about those large cogs lasting as for me they get the most wear.
@Maciej Jan Długosz Możesz podesłać link? Ciekawy temat.
@Maciej Jan Długosz Dzięki za informacje.
I still wonder if there is a rationale behind 10t cogs.
510% 😎
@@LoveMTB oh ok thanks, yeah I thought so. Might as well keep riding the SLX without using the 12th cog, not that I use it that often
I want to build a bike nr 2, so won't hurt to get a RD now any way.
@@LoveMTB not sure what you mean. I know there is 11 and 12 speed version. But not sure if that's what you mean. But it's the 12 speed m6100 I am considering, I've been told it should work well with 11-51t 11 speed Cs.
@@LoveMTB OK, I've not seen m5100 in stock in Norway. So only have on roption of rd right now due to shortage, unless going for xtr that seems like wasted money. 😁
@@LoveMTB I currently have HG spline on hope pro 4 converted to boost. Have you. Has wear on splines decreased with Microspline? What about bearings and load is the load spread enough, or do Microspline compromise the hub reliability? I've seen one with crushed bearings it was a shimano hub.
@@LoveMTB so hyperglide plus is not on 11 speed cassette? I thought it had it. 🤔
All i want is all steel 10-45... it's pretty stupid that they limited those to XT and XTR.
@@LoveMTB Wait, there is SLX?

No, I don't use the easiest gear that much (46/34 oval, at the moment), but I do use the second one quite a bit, so I want it in steel.
SLX is perfect for me and I'll be able to use my 11spd GS derailleur, which is way shorter than that 12spd monstrosity.
I think it's great that deore comes with microspline hubs as it makes it much easier and cheaper to upgrade a new bike that came with this deore drivetrain.
When looking for new bikes and they come with an NX drivetrain it's just so much more expensive to get a 10T cog in the rear as you have to upgrade the cassette and the freehub
Top spider rivets gave way on mine really quick.
@@LoveMTB Never came back to me, sadly.
The slx m7100 chain doesn't seat firmly around the 12-speed cassette. There is very very little room for adjustment and everything must be perfectly set for this shimano to work w/o noise and/or chain skip. The 11-speed deore's chain sits much more firm onto a deore 11-speed cassette and is more stable and seemingly better quality, just in my experience.

just a point! you know the hyper glide plus is have nothing to do with that right? its about possibility to shift under power!
@@LoveMTB according to shimano: "HYPERGLIDE+ helps riders seamlessly maneuver rough trails by reducing pedaling shock and cutting shifting times by a 1/3" that means you can shift upward or downward almost without stopping power transfer to the pedals:bike.shimano.com/content/dam/productsite/shimano/img/tech-description/hyperglide/hg-plus_en.png
