Could I run this cassette or would I need to up grade the derailleur ? if so how about a Sram Eagle GX 12 speed derailleur with the 11 speed shifter ? or best just to upgrade oneday everything to a 12 speed ? Any thoughts would be apricated Thank You
I like my 5100. I did miss the rear 10 tooth cog for on road/downhills, but just upgraded to 34T absolute black chain ring to see if get best of both worlds, with a bit higher speed on the flat while not losing climbing ability. will see how goes.
@@LoveMTB I think it will be. That seems to be the main difference between the 5100 and 6100, an 11T instead of 10t on the rear and I did notice upgrading from my 2x setup to 1X (2x11tooth-top gear 3.27 with 536% range to 1x 32t front 2.90@ 463%) so the 34t front should bring it up to 3.09 and I can pedal a bit quicker without my legs flying off :)
I'm using m4100 groupset
Man I’m so confused by Shimano’s lineup! I have a Cube Reaction Hybrid with an 11 speed 11-51T Shimano 5100 cassette, and the 5100 SGS derailleur. My chain just snapped and destroyed my derailleur! Is this 6100 an easy upgrade I can make here? Or should I just buy the same derailleur again?
Yes but it's not really an upgrade they are the same
Excellent video. Good info.
Hello.
Did you measure the thickness of the 5100 and 6100 gearbox pulleys? Does it have the same thickness?
Yes
im using m8000 RD with m5100 51t cassette shifting smooth as slik with kmc gold chain.
Yes, I confirm this. It is also stipulated on Shimano manual for xt m8000 RD, SGS. I converted another bike to 1x11, with the same cassette 11-51, but with 5100 RD and M7000 slx shifter. It works beautiful!
@@LoveMTB the long cage sir
Great video! Thank you. I'd like to know if I can mix m6100 chain with m5100 cassette and m8100 crankset (with m8100 chainring). Because my wheelset doesn't have the Micro Spline freehub. So before I upgrade my wheelsets, I need to stick to 11s a bit longer. 😪

Thanks for the videos very informative, definitely convinced have to upgrade the drivetrain of my entry level Giant Talon2, 11x2 casette and 36-22 crankset to the Deore 5100 group. My real issue is want to go to 1 x 36T crankset but this configuration is not in Shimano line up of FC-M5100-1, any suggestion ???
Thanks for the reply but kind of confused ... are not M6100 & M7100 series exclusively for 12 speed drive trains??
Just get a narrow-wide chainring for your current crank, bolt it on, and you now have 1x.
thinking of retiring my deore 2x10 m6000 after 5 years of commuting, xc and trekking, and this m5100 seems tempting, however quality wise, previous deore was better, maybe i should go to 12s deore instead but need advice on what be best.
For your use case I would argue M5100 is a good fit?
@@LoveMTB ended up installing the m5100 but with the m8000 deore xt shifter great combo, having the extended shift range is def worth it going 4 down and 2 up.
@@dodrio1000 Of yeah for sure, that is a great and easy idea to upgrade that M5100
Cam you use deore xt m8100 derailleur on deore m5100 11 speed casette??
BTW set: M7100 derailleur + M7000 shifter + M5100 fully compatible
Is it possible to upgrade 5100 to 6100? What all parts need change?
In conclusion, So I can use the m5100 derailleur in a 12 speed m6100 cassette with 12 speed xt shifter and chain?
Hey man love the vids wish u could check out the advent x drivetrain
Is it possible to add a B-link to the stock M5100 derailleur so that it will be compatible with a standard hanger? I get it from your other video that you can take out the B-link of those derailleurs to go from standard to direct mount hangers, but this is the reverse. I wonder if what I'm asking is in fact the M5120 derailleur, but the groupset comes with the M5100.
Would you be able to check if the M5100 RD will work with a 10sp shifter?
Will the M5100 Derailleur directly replace an XT M8000 GS without any adapter/hanger changes? I'm puzzled by the whole Shimano Direct Mount/Conventional mount thing (I'm fitting the M5100 Cassette).
Can i use a 12spd shifter on the M5100 upgrade set? Because i can't find a 1x11 slx or xt shifter with clampmount.
Well it is a 12s, so I would recommend using an 11 speed M8000. M7000 wouldn't be much of a difference?
What chainring of 34 teeth can used in m5100?
You should find your answer in this vid! - ruclips.net/video/eQIro27Ar6k/видео.html
Great work mate.
Loving the bl-m4100 levers after deore leak. Love the feel, love the seal. (additional seal behind piston keeps grit away, only possible without servo wave)
Can i upgrade this gear in fatbike
💯 think it would make for a great drivetrain for that application.
Danke Bruder 🚲
Will the Saint 10 speed shifter work with the m5120 ten speen derailleur?
It should?
Which of the older xtr xt sl shifter models works with deore 5100 derailleur 11 speed (11-51)?
All 11 speed work with M5100
Hey thanks for the interesting video! I currently have a Specialized Carve (2013) that I'd like to upgrade with this 1x11 m5100 rear derailleur and groupset (10-51). Is this incompatible because the bike uses a b-link for it's rear derailleur and the new one is direct mount or should it work out just fine?
@@LoveMTB I have 2022 trek marlin 5 can I use this set up or it won’t work? I can’t find any info on it
if 5100 and 6100 derailleurs are the same can i use m7100 slx 12 speed derailleur with the m5100 cassette as 6100 and 7100 components are cross compatible
Yes 100%
Thank you very much for the series! I'm installing m5100 on my bike today and you made it 10 times easier.
P.S. Do you know if Shimano still makes mt500/501 brakes?
@@LoveMTB Sadly the cassette is not tight and it looks like only the 11t cog is torqued properly. Rest have 1-2mm play. I will contact my LBS at Monday.
If I don't fix the problem, I'll get sunrace ms8 or mx8.
is the m5100 derailleur compatible with deore m6100 cassette(10 51) ??
Thanks. So the jockey wheels are identical with same tooth profile and both compatible with Shimano 12 or 11 speed chain unlike the chainring and cassette? I'm running m5100 drivetrain.
@@LoveMTB Great. The only reason I ask is because Shimano lists two different part numbers for the M5100 or M6100 jockey wheels and they are different in appearance (spoke pattern). WP-Y3FY98010 is listed for M7100/M7120/M6100 and WP-Y3HL98010 is listed for M5100. Do you know if M8100 jockey wheels WP-Y3FW98010 is compatible with m5100? This is the only way to upgrade to ball bearing jockey wheels?
can i use this m5100 rd to my 10 speed drivetrain?
1. m4100 shifter
2. m4100 (11-46) cassette
is it compatible sir?
Should work fine
@@LoveMTB thank you very much sir.. 🇵🇭🚴
Is it possible to have a 2x11 setup using this m5100 derailuer with 11 51 cassette connected to a m5100 2x crankset?
I using m5100 with xt 11 speed derailleur. With 51cog cassette i can use a 38t chain ring. Sounds like a plan
@LoveMTB if I use the 5100RD with a 12speed cassette will it work or will the Shimano chain have meshing problems with the guide and tension pulleys?
can shifter 12s and RD M6100 12s work on a sprocket M5100 11s?
Not quite but if you get an 11 speed shifter you’ll be fine with the m6100

Can this be used with a 10s cassette sprocket? Thanks
@@LoveMTB thanks. I did find the m5120. Compatible with 11 or 10. Planning on building a bike with only 10s cassette for casual every day use
Is the csmz600 cassette 12 speed 51t compatible in m6100 deore rd and shifter
Why is it i changed my cogs into mz903 and yet the chain somtimes drop while shifting? What is the possible cause?
The lever on the 5100 is 2mm shorter, so it only supports 11 speeds

What is the difference in cable pull among 10, 11 and 12 speed Shimano?
What makes them incompatible between those speeds?
Or is using 11spd cassette and shifter with 10spd derailleur doable ?
I do wish Shimano would make a 12 speed HG compatible cassette for those of us keeping old bikes going. I have a mix of HG and MS wheels among my bikes. Mix that with QR and thru axle hubs and it seems nothing swaps with anything 🤬.
My Fatbike ended up with 12 speed SLX with a 29+ wheelset, and the Fat wheelset ended up with a SRAM NX cassette. It all works, but would have preferred to stay all Shimano.
Hi. Will the M6100 play well with an 11-speed chain? I've got the M5100 cogs, shifter, crank, and chain but can't find a an M5100 RD.
It will work just fine, actuallu as you see in the vid there is no difference between M6100 and M5100 derailleurs.
@@LoveMTB Thanks a lot! The vid was actually very clear. Just have this annoying trait where I need things spelled out or my brain just would not rest.
Thank again, mate!

So you can use a 12s derailleur to use a 11-51 11 speed cassette Indeed
💯
M5100 > M6100
hes wearing a sram hat while talking shimano. so subversive!
M5100 cassete sucks. It has many isues with loose rivets. Cassete make horrible noise and shifting dont work.
I have not had problems with the riverts but the aluminium spider for the gears 1-5 was way too loose on the freewheel body splines. The shift from 6th to 5th was thus bad as those sprockers were not aligned as designed.
@@hece35Early version of this cassette did that. Went a little tighter with the locknut solved the issue. The M5100 cassettes the last couple years are fine.
The very first ones made during the COVID peak had rivet issues. No longer the case AFAIK.
M5100 rd + shifter to xt m8000 11/46 cassette. Will it work? Awesome video as always thanks again.
@@LoveMTB thanks man really appreciate it.
I'm wondering if the M5100 Derailleur will work well with the 11s XD driver cassette ?
