Most fresh flowers are exported from The Netherlands and yeah, they're known to be covered in pesticides. Even if you're soaking them to try to remove as much as possible, I wouldn't serve the part of the cake the flowers are on.
Another florist here. Like the comment before me I really wouldn't use those flowers in cakes at all. There are flowers specifically for this purpose that do not have pesticides on them. Even soaking them doesn't remove all of it as you don't know if something systemic was used.
I had to do exactly this at my wedding. The cake was made by a friend but it fell over in the trunk of her car. My son ran for tubs of icing, another friend started grabbing flowers out of the decor. In the end, our 10 minute panic decoration was far better than the original had been anyway. So stressful though!
It's worth mentioning that people need to be careful about choosing fresh flowers and leaves/greenery that are food safe and not toxic. Even with flower holders or binding stems, if flowers/greenery come into contact with the cake, you need to be careful.

@forevergogo also, the original was just bad. If it was supposed to have been done by an actual bakery whoever did it was either an actual child or shouldn't have been doing cakes at all. My Mom baked and decorated cakes for a hobby outside of her 9-5 office job. Her roses and tiers and well, everything was just so much better and I honestly feel like I could have done better than the original and I've never decorated a cake in my life. Loved the after. As an event planner I’ve done similar things for my brides who had cake disasters. I think I would have sprinkled the luster dust on the flowers after they were placed. It would be just a hint of gold, but you did amazing.
Thanks to your videos, I saved my daughters wedding cake. Went to pick it up from a grocery store bakery ( bride and groom didn’t really want a cake, and I was ordering from over 500 miles away) I had ordered a simple 2:tier cake with no decoration. Just white. No cake. So I bought an 8 inch Black Forest cake with mostly white icing, and a 6 inch white cake with a red border and sprinkles. I asked the bakery worker for a tub of white icing, and I bought some tips in the baking section. Took off all the sprinkle, red border, white chocolate shavings and cherries. And then stacked it, re iced and put a border on and ended up with what I wanted. Thanks for giving me the confidence to make it happen
"bride and groom didn’t really want a cake" I'm not sure I understand what went on here. Maybe you just chose an unfortunate way to describe the situation? Did they maybe not want to spend money on a cake (because let's face it, money is tight for most of us)? Or they were like my husband and I, we didn't care either way and would have been perfectly happy without one. But when one of our guests showed up with a cute little wedding cake, we thought it was a thoughtful, lovely gesture and didn't take offense. I've been to a wedding, though, where they intentionally didn't serve a traditional wedding cake and there was some kind of deep reason behind it (I forgot, it's been nearly forty years). As well as other weddings where some family members or the couple were allergic/had dietary restrictions and it was easiest to go without a cake.
@@p.s.shnabel3409 they are not big cake fans. So I went with a very small simple cake so there was on to cut . There were other desserts. They ended up loving it . 15:48 Hi hello, that's one way to open a rose. I work on photo/film sets advertising food and drinks and the trick we use is simply just to roll the stem between your hands. They open up super quick.
Your cake is so much more refined and beautiful even though it's simpler and was easier to make! A tip: those flowers likely use pesticides that are not food safe since they're not meant for human consumption. There are florists who sell flowers specifically for food use! Some supermarkets like Whole Foods also have edible flowers with the fresh herbs but if you're looking for whole flowers, definitely call around to florists.

Love Ann Reardon as well. ❤ She definitely deserves all the recognition she can get for the great work she's been doing on RUclips for ages now. When I saw the notification for this video, I immediately remembered her cake rescue series too. So cool! :)
fixing cakes is kind of fun! One time at work we ordered a cake to celebrate a colleague but when removing from the box the writing on top was smeared, so we removed it with a knife, got some strawberry and blueberry from the fridge and made the top of the cake full with fresh fruit, then added a couple more fruit pieces to the base of the cake and it looked super cute. Crisis averted!
@@tiffanytownley3666 I certainly don't and complain about it every time I try to ice a cake. Swear I'll order one right away ... and forget. I don't ice cakes very often, nor well.

Gorgeous and so helpful for anyone in a pinch. I knew you were my kind of people, but when you promoted Evan & Katelyn, that solidified it even more. Love them and love you too! ❤ Eta: Kevin tricking you to take the cake stand was pure gold.
For fresh flowers don’t you have to worry about the stems? Not all flowers and stems are edible, is it possible to accidentally poison peeps? It turned out amazing. Edit: I noticed now you wrapped the stems before putting them in. Would love to see you talk about why and how.
Commercially grown flowers usually have pesticides in them and it's the stem that's the issue - if you cut into it and just stick it in the cake, traces of pesticide can go into the cake. This is why cake decorators will use a special flower tape to wrap the stems, or at home you can just use plastic wrap. Just keep in mind that unlike the flower tape, the plastic wrap might stick to the cake more than the flower, so you have to make sure it comes out when removing the flowers.
At my wedding a relative made my cakes. She did a pretty good job, they weren't exactly perfect but I didn't care. Because she did her best and it's just a CAKE. Sometimes people go a little too far with weddings thinking everything has to be perfect. Not everything is going to be perfect.
if i was the bride . i would've asked for my money back and left the cake. headed over to Walmart for two plain white cakes added some straws to stake them and picked up some fresh flowers. spray some glitter maybe and done
Nice!!! A friend of mine was a florist. She told me that flowers have so much pesticide on them that she had to change careers. She developed an allergy and even wearing gloves didn't help. Even if the flower is edible, grocery store flowers are not safe for using on food intended for eating! 😮 Unless the flowers are specifically grown as organic/food grade.
Exactly. Who does this??? Laurie has the talent to show us how to pipe something to replace those hideous initial flowers, but every time, goes out and buys flowers to stick into the cake for some extra pesticide or plastic flavor.
I would have gone with a gold ribon as a back up to the luster dust, picked both up at the same time. The first photo had a dimond ribbon. I think it was a beautiful fix, great job!
I could definitely stay away from eucalyptus which is toxic if eaten. I would imagine floral tubes would be much safer and available at most craft stores.
that mustard gold is apparently a thing, i used to have a PT cruiser that was that color gold. i think they called it "aztec gold" idk. always looked like baby diarrhea to me.
15:2517:39 I’ve always heard that you can’t use real flowers on cakes because they can have some kind of reaction that can make the icing that they touch inedible or like poisonous, so you are supposed to wash and clean and use fake flowers instead?
Love the video. I also watch How to cook that. Please let people know about not putting baby breath flowers on cakes is toxicity and not safe. I know there not any on your cake. For anyone wanting to do this at home.
So the annual variety of baby's breath actually isn't toxic at all. It's what's commonly used in fresh florals. Even the perennial variety could give you an upset stomach, but isn't really toxic.
If you hold the stem between both hands with the flower facing downward, you can roll it between your hands so the flower spins and the petals open up evenly
Honestly, you and Anne are the only baking/cooking channels I watch so BOI was I excited you mentioned her and did this challenge. Would love to see you two together.
You could add Gold braid ribbon around the bottom, middle and top try the same braid in 3 different widths....sprinkle edible gold dust, cover your board in fabric and sweep your flowers more around the cake ...it works and is good much better than the cheap one she brought
The fun vibe with lots of laughter and fun editing comments is an instant-follow from me! 😁 Love everything about this video and I’m off to enjoy the heck out of more of your content! I’m so glad you’re here doing your thing, keep up the awesome! 😁
I love that you mentioned Ann! I clicked on this video and within a few seconds was thinking “hey this is pretty much the same concept as how to cook that’s cake saving videos” and then you credited her. Makes me so happy to see different RUclipsrs in the baking community shout each other out!
That’s an amazing idea. Especially for creative people that have control issues. Just order a baked, iced and tiered cake. Then go get fresh flowers, from the floral shop that did your wedding, order them at the same time you order your bouquet. Wala! Place your flowers on your cake. Great freaking idea.
Great as a 'fix', but don't like the cake. The point was fixing a cake disaster for a panicked bride..... you aced that! It's leaps and bounds better than the first one! Thanks for sharing, this was fun!
I think sometimes of having a chocolate wedding cake because I'm not traditional and love chocolate. But my vision is still classy. I'd want to use my Hummel figurines (apple tree boy and cherry tree girl)as toppers so the rest of the decoration could be branches with blossoms. The main frosting could be cream color or a light caramel with chocolate borders and piped branches. Then add some butter cream cherry blossoms and maybe marzipan apples. It might not scream wedding, but it would be pretty.
Face it you can't do a BAD job even when you're trying ;)I lost my mind when Kevin took her stand. I needed this today. I just can't be sad watching these videos.
So fun to see how you fix the cake...I can't wait for more cake disasters! It would be fun too to see Kevin try to fix one...since in your scenario it's a regular person from the wedding trying to fix it quick. Just to see how someone without your cake decorating skills would fare!
Girl said “most people don’t have floral tape”… I am 😅😅😅 like I never add flowers to make cakes but I went through a flower crown phase and stocked up on that floral tape 😂
Use straws or cling film when inserting the cake stems into the cake as people are going to eat it, you can get special pick things for inserting real flowers, some types of flowers are safer then others.
Just wondering if she confirmed if any of those flowers are toxic? Cause I remember hearing a story of someone who decorated their cake with Baby’s Breath flowers and was surprised that everyone who ate it got sick. Baby’s Breath flowers are poisonous.
You did great, using the samples the bride chose. For ME, I would have skipped the large red roses and stayed with medium soft pink roses. The entire cake would look softer. OR I would use smaller red roses. Again, for what the bride wanted- you delivered! And in 90 minutes or less!!! ❤
Just checking in about Archie’s health. Is he well and back to normal now? Love your channel and really loved your home Reno clip. Your new house is a dream home. Congratulations 🥳
For flowers I have tried using fake plastic ones but I could see cutting a real flower and poking a skewer through instead of putting a stem into the cake.
Both of those Inspiration photos were what l looked at for our wedding cake and we used the one with the red flowers and swirls. Your cake was deffo better.
Another option that most people have instead of the saran wrap is to use it down plastic straws and put the stems in the straws so they don’t touch the cake.
100% I would take your rescue over the original bad cake. I feel so sad that that ended up being their wedding cake. Mine ended up bad, too, and actually, multiple people asked me during the reception if they could move it back into the kitchen. I hadn't seen it yet so I said no, it's fine! After the third or fourth person, I went over to take a look.. yikes. It wasn't this bad though.
Someone mentioned that fresh flowers are dipped in pesticides but just an FYI they can also be poisonous. Like fox glove, lily of the valley, oleander, larkspur, daffodil, iris etc
This was such a fun video!! You got pretty darned close to the original fail, though I love that even your "worst" attempt is still better looking than it was. XD And the remade version looks great!!!
When I first learned to decorate was from an old school decorator. I had to pipe like 20 + roses every week for class. Was taught 50/50 royal + buttercream. Also got taught to pipe in stages. And scalloped border was the bomb in the 80’s. I to am not a fan. You did a good job piping the flowers. Piping ain’t easy. Don’t know what grocery store sold you icing?? The bakery stores where I am don’t sell it. I’ve decorated with real flowers on several cakes. Always used organic. Because regular flowers are full of pesticides and possibly bugs. You can dip your flower stems in either parowax or melted white chocolate. Easy and no fuss. I really love the placement of the flowers. Other cakes were heavy handed. Yours was light and lovely. Like a cascading meadow.

@@shannono9421 In previous videos, she does tape the stems before inserting them.
That’s what I came to say. Never put flowers, plants, etc on a cake. If it’s not edible, don’t use it.
She wrapped the stems in plastic wrap before putting them in the cake
@@mychaoticneutralace4617they obviously weren’t paying attention lol
You two are seriously couple goals! Him taking the turntable away and you casually saying "Shut up Kevin".
Just so adorable 😂
Subscribed!
I would have gone with a gold ribon as a back up to the luster dust, picked both up at the same time. The first photo had a dimond ribbon. I think it was a beautiful fix, great job!
I came to you through How To Cook That :)
I think so did i
So did I, if I'm not mistaken. :)
Im pretty sure i did as well. I know i found ann first then laurie might have just been in my suggested? Either way, im glad i found laurie!
Me too
12:55 I’m loving the rough look! Stick some flowers in and call it done!
This is one reason I ordered a plain, three tiered cake. I wanted to add the flowers myself!
True talent shines through when you're TRYING to make something look bad and you can't manage it because you're just that good loooool
I thought it wasn't wise to use non edible grade flowers on food (even if the flowers are not planned to be eaten)?
I think the stems can be taped 🤔
That's why Laurie mentioned floral tape, the main "issue" is usually the stem.
I could definitely stay away from eucalyptus which is toxic if eaten. I would imagine floral tubes would be much safer and available at most craft stores.
I have a hack for those without lazy susans or even a cake spinner. If your microwave rotates you can take out the plate from there and use that.
that mustard gold is apparently a thing, i used to have a PT cruiser that was that color gold. i think they called it "aztec gold" idk. always looked like baby diarrhea to me.
15:25 17:39 I’ve always heard that you can’t use real flowers on cakes because they can have some kind of reaction that can make the icing that they touch inedible or like poisonous, so you are supposed to wash and clean and use fake flowers instead?
You're supposed to wrap the stems of you do real flowers. But some flowers are edible and won't cause issues.
The bottom layer of the original cake screams, “you can do it Brucey!!” 😂 IYKYK
the chocolate cake from matilda? 😭
I love how diplomatic Laurie was about the original fail.
If you hold the stem between both hands with the flower facing downward, you can roll it between your hands so the flower spins and the petals open up evenly
I love that you use chip clips on your icing bags! I’ve been doing this for years with those same clips!
You both seem more at peace in this vid than ever ! I can feel the calm energy between you both
0:36 yeah Kevin! 😅🤣
Honestly, you and Anne are the only baking/cooking channels I watch so BOI was I excited you mentioned her and did this challenge. Would love to see you two together.
Honestly didn’t expect our turntable to be the low-key hero of this video, but here we are-spinning cake disasters into happy endings!
You could add Gold braid ribbon around the bottom, middle and top try the same braid in 3 different widths....sprinkle edible gold dust, cover your board in fabric and sweep your flowers more around the cake ...it works and is good much better than the cheap one she brought
4:15 I love how hers is already better
I thought 'That's Anne Reardon's schtick!', but you nailed it too!
All those colors don't go together, and the letter is a 'no-go'. Leaving it white or brown with pink flowers, and that would be it.
I just freaking LOVE the way you and Kevin interact! The world needs more fun and laughter, and you two BRING IT! ❤
The fun vibe with lots of laughter and fun editing comments is an instant-follow from me! 😁
Love everything about this video and I’m off to enjoy the heck out of more of your content!
I love it when RUclipss mention other RUclipss whom I already love and follow. It makes me feel relevent 😅
ahh the editing on this video is SO MUCH better than the busy, flashing to other videos and pop up things editing. LOVE IT THANK YOU
For the LAST TIME-
If you take a picture of a cake made by a high-end bakery to a grocery store bakery: YOU’RE GONNA HAVE A BAD TIME!!!
This just shows how easy it would be to decorate your own wedding cake😁
That’s an amazing idea. Especially for creative people that have control issues. Just order a baked, iced and tiered cake. Then go get fresh flowers, from the floral shop that did your wedding, order them at the same time you order your bouquet. Wala! Place your flowers on your cake. Great freaking idea.
Great as a 'fix', but don't like the cake. The point was fixing a cake disaster for a panicked bride..... you aced that! It's leaps and bounds better than the first one! Thanks for sharing, this was fun!
The fix fits much better with the pictures the bride used, but I also don’t like the cake. Not my style.
Watching how easily you transformed that cake on a budget makes me want to make wedding cakes now!! Amazing!
Apple tree boy and girl are really cute! They would be a win. My mum collected Hummel.
Nailed it, for sure. Really enjoy this series, I'd even be happy to see you make better versions of cakes that aren't fails but just aren't great.
Glad you shouted out Anne! Big respect for doing something so many people don't bother to do.
You can blow into a rose and turn it upside down and spin the stem, opens them up beautifully!
3:35 it's probably because you're not stressing about it
Please do more of this series it is very educational
I would LOVE too!! I went such a rabbit hole doing research for this video and found so many more cakes I'd love to makeover
Anns cake rescues are some of my favourite videos on her channel!
Mine too!! I love how she turns these cakes around and I've always wanted to challenge myself to do the same! I'd love to do a birthday cake version
@@TheIcingArtist I loved how different your cake rescue video felt! Same concept, different styles, amazing video!
I love Ann's series like this, and I loved this video too! I hope you do more like this, it's very fun to watch.
I would have “lustred” the flowers, but just with the straight dust sprinkled on.
18:54 I loved this moment 😅❤❤❤😍😍😍 you both are super cute. 🥹
Kevin making it rain with the petals...he could have put them under his hat and done a Sasha Velour moment, LOL.
Honestly you just puttin the icing on the cake at 12:37 already made it look super cool!
F for fail. Was it meant to be an initial? 😂
When he snatched that cake spinner thing I was dying laughing 😂 his brain works in a way that really adds something to these challenges 😂
Girl said “most people don’t have floral tape”… I am 😅😅😅 like I never add flowers to make cakes but I went through a flower crown phase and stocked up on that floral tape 😂
I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! I'm also fan of Ann Reardon's channel and her cake rescues are my faves. I LOVE that you did a wedding cake rescue!
I am so incredibly impressed with your ad placement/transition
I just love how Kevin took away her turntable and how she finds an alternative within seconds 😂
You just came up for me in the algorithm. Loved this, please make more of these "saving a cake" vids. Subbed.
Does Archie ever run anywhere?😂 He's the chillest dog I've ever seen. But a very goid boi.
As is the eucalyptus 😕
You did great, using the samples the bride chose. For ME, I would have skipped the large red roses and stayed with medium soft pink roses. The entire cake would look softer.
OR I would use smaller red roses.
Again, for what the bride wanted- you delivered! And in 90 minutes or less!!! ❤
If you have a crushed frosting you can use the paper towel method or you can use the hot water knife method.
I honestly think your cake looks prettier than the ones in the pictures. It's simpler and more tasteful.
Sundays was one of the foods our dog wouldn’t eat. Love your version.
I love that you did a shout out to not only Ann but also Evan and Katelyn! Some of mt favourite channels!
Great improvement and awesome that you gave suggestions for how bakeries with limited means can handle orders like that
Both of those Inspiration photos were what l looked at for our wedding cake and we used the one with the red flowers and swirls.
Maybe you could have used the gold to dust the flowers? (Just the powder)
Ooo I love Ann Reardon's cake rescue series too! This was fun, you should definitely make more of these
Someone mentioned that fresh flowers are dipped in pesticides but just an FYI they can also be poisonous.
Thank you!! I love the idea of dipping the flowers in melted chocolate! I'm going to give that one a go!
@@TheIcingArtist Curious to know where you bought your pre-made icing? I can only get at McCall’s or Bulk Barn. And lately, BB hasn’t carried. I use for icing dummies.
