Wow, not only is Peter Erskine a master on the drums, but such a nice, down to earth person. I'm blown away by the depth of his knowledge and his ability to communicate his experience and abilities to someone that is learning the brushes without sounding cocky.
I met Mr. Erskine when he was touring with Weather Report in the early '80s. I was young (high school) and he advised that I master the basics and play along with the old masters. He was so unpretentious and so willing to help a young player like myself. Great guy and amazing musician.
Wonderful man, incredibly musical drummer and he played with one of the best musicians that ever lived, Jaco Pastorius.
What a legend. I'm not even 2 minutes in and I'm blown away by his feel and creativity.
its called jazz, bud. try it out sometime. take five is a prime example.
Jacob dude, I play jazz. I understand how hard it is to do well and that's why I appreciate erskine so much more
i do as well, sorry if my comment came off as a little rude.
+Jacob hey man. it's all good, we're all here for similar reasons. Respect ♡

Peter is supremely musical....at times I forgot he was playing to a track. I believe he is the only guy where his sound didnt require studio compression for the drums....extremely rare quality to his stuff. Thanks for this presentation.
You have had some great drummers on your show - but Mr. Erskine- he is world class!!
Mr. Erskine is a national treasure. Just the way he plays the ride ride cymbal makes my heart happy.
Tout est là, tout est dit ... Elégance, swing, groove, sourire, plaisir, bonne humeur, dynamiques, technique, raffinement, lyrisme ... Petit kit de 4 toms & 2 cymbales, rien à (r)ajouter ... Quelle classe ! Un des meilleurs drummers de la planète donc très demandé, c'est cela le talent ! De plus, Maître ès-balais, autre preuve de son immense culture ... Un must batteristique !
So so good and excellent at explaining the art of brushes and great that he knows it will be daunting to mere mortals like me. Peter Erskine can do anything. Brilliant.
Peter is Just a Genius. Swings Great, Musical, Down to Earth. like a Fine Wine.
Hands down one of the most informative lessons so far on Drumeo. If you wish to be a Musician and Drummer with skill in dynamics, feel and inner ear, Erskine clearly defines all of these areas. A lot to be learnt. He has played in many Groups of different Genres. There is far more to be learnt from him than there is to be learnt from some of the people who have been on Drumeo (I don't wish to call out any particular names). However I feel it needs to be said there is a certain breadline between; The MUSICIANS first Drummers Second - who HAVE done the work over years of playing in many different settings and gaining their respect as a Musician. As apposed to the DRUMMERS who are Musicians Second, who have all the gear and all the talk, but yet fail to represent any of the attributes gained from pushing themselves to their best possible ability and taking influence from those who have experienced and played with many. I am no expert in anyway and DO NOT pretend to be. I am still studying as A Musician (Drums and Piano) in my second year at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. However I do always try and remain LOYAL, RESPECTFUL and HARDWORKING as a musician, it's time to define who you are as a person and not fall into the classic drummer stereo type. Keep Practising and Remain Positive :D
AWESOME lessons! I love how he breaks it down so you know "it's like your gathering a bunch of weed or something" I can surely understand that! finally a drum technique teacher who speaks my lingo. thanks!
Jared you are doing a great service for all drummers worldwide. You are exposing drummers to other styles they may not consider and that will only help move the art of drumming forward. Thank you for having an open mind and continued success. Love to see Brian Blade
5 years ago I would´ve dismissed this video. You gotta have built a solid level of coordination and relaxation to fully take advantage of everything Mr.Erskine is saying in this lesson. The guy is a true legend. Very cool. Thanx, Drumeo!
Drumeo! the quality and value of your content is a god send to new drummers like myself, thanks a billion 🙌🏽
Also Peter Erskine is awesome
Yes! Mr. Erskine is one of the tastiest, most musical drummers on the planet. Thanks so much for sharing!
had the pleasure of seeing erskine and the Dr. um band not too long ago. actually got to meet him and shake his hand afterwards. really awesome down to earth guy! super tasteful drumming!
Best thing I've seen on brushwork on RUclips. The dude's really good at explaining what's going on in his head when he plays. Thanks for posting.
Mr. Erskine is a national treasure. Thanks for posting this.
He looks like the happiest guy on earth playing set
Yeah man!!! 😂
An articulate man, in both speech and drumming. A musicians musician. Thank You for having him here.
does he have a calf skin head or did the brushes take the coating?
Hi Gabrial ... He is using a Remo Fiberskyn drum head.... You can see it here: remo.com/products/product/ambassador-fiberskyn/
@Michaeldrummer Peter said a Diplomat Fyberskin if I heard well?
Man this is such a chill lesson. Good technique to learn
That intro song was a master class in classic, understated and swinging jazz drumming. Even his transitions from sticks to brushes back to sticks was a joy to watch. Awesome stuff.
He is so cute and kind, and of course absolutely amazing while playing drums..
Thanks Drumeo! You really are doing a great service to all the drummers even other musicians all over the world!
This guy is a GIANT!! One of the true greats. Love the stuff Peter did with Mike Stern.
That's amazing that you got Erskine on here. So relaxed and musical. Like how simple he breaks things down and allows one to take concepts and be creative with them.
Peter's superb playing as far back as Steps Ahead band, in the 80's was among the best anywhere in the style of contemporary jazz. He's simply incredible at what he does. That's his earliest that I'm familiar with anyway.
Honestly. If you guys got Brian Blade, you would have so many bases covered for all the guys into jazz and rock, or many other things. I would love to hear a lesson from him. Such a master. Great lesson from Peter, though! Peter Erskine Ride Stick is my go to
I have learned so much from Peter erskine through out the years. Mellow guy and excellent player!!
The first time I saw Peter was back in the 70's with Maynard Ferguson doing Gonna Fly Now and other great arrangements. Look it up on youtube. Blew me away.. Huge influence..He played the heck out of those Slingerlands. Awesome!
Jared, you are incredible! I can't believe you got Erskine to come to your show, and posted the whole thing! You're a true Canadian!
Dude’s livin’ the dream. Travels the globe playing beautiful music and doesn’t have to deal with not being able to go to a grocery store. I’m so envious of talented, famous folks who can fly under the radar. Also, Peter is such a wealth of information. Cool dude for sure:)
Thank you Peter....Your respect is humbling....
Almost a forgotten art form, very good very interesting.
nice camera positions, Drumeo you do wonderful job helping us drummers, thank you!
Peter is a great drummer ! Thanks for inviting him! You could also bring a Greek drummer like George Kollias or Kostas Anastasiadis with a huge international career
WATCHING THIS . i went to shopping spree on Jazz Essentials Peter Erskin Apps , not only is great for any drummer to play along , its great for teachers and teaching too.Thank You Mr. Erskin & Jared too.
I just stumbled across this older video. This is a real gem.
The master of groove. It's so cool to see him play!
Freaking legend! Thanks, Erskine, for being you!
Peter Erskine is a totally amazing drummer.
Thanks Mr. Erskine. I have switched from punk country to alt-country and have picked up the brushes for a bit. The dead sticking has made all the difference. Plus like a numpty I didn't think about the grip coated heads would give. Anyway..cheers. Love your work.
Excellent useful lesson on brushes he's one of my favourite jazz drummers so tastefull
My gosh, he makes it look so easy.
He's a master of his craft, that's for sure!
TY for this video lesson!
great musician, great teacher, great human being!
Peter is the man! And you are also super awesome Jared! Thank you for this incredibly helpful lesson.
Amazing. In drumming, its always subtle things that get me, and Peter is great in that department. Besides, I love that ride with rivets!
More Jazz Drummers Drumeo !!! Jeff Tain Watts, Bill stewart, Eric Harland... that's the Brain drumming ! huge Thanks for Erskine :)
DRUMEO please get BRIAN BLADE to do a lesson!:) would be so awesome!

In This Lesson; Playing drums in Jazz.
All the same, Peter Erskine is great, and this was a good lesson.
Cheers, Jared & co.
OH Yeah!! Brushes are the bomb!! Erskine is a master as is Keltner.
I very like the brushes because makes quite beautiful sound.I playing jazz and brushes is my 2nd choice
whats your 1st choice
In the presence of greatness - he really stretches your patience, right:-) Love it, when the interviewer, too uncomfortable (also here) with the silence and the lenght of the pause, when Peter is fiddling with his Iphone, switches to his screen and starting to talk about questions: Peter: "Let me play" Hahah, priceless
Peter Erskine! The master! Thanks for bringing him on. To all the uninitiated leaving negative comments: do yourself a favor and learn how to play jazz drums! It'll make you a better drummer in every other genre. I promise.
Why is this so relaxing !? i love it
Who in the hell gave a thumbs down on this video?! Peter Erskine is freaking amazing.
Besides Ben Riley, Pete's Brush technique is the best I've seen ever dudes. Thnx Mr. Erskine !
What a fabulous tutorial on brushes! I have such a better understanding of how to handle them now. BTW, Grady Tate played brushes on Roberta Flack's version of "Killing Me Softly".
WOW! Cant believe you guys were able to Peter Erskine! Amazing
I didn't know Chris Kringle played such good brushes, great lesson!
And his cymbal sounds...beautiful!
A true master of the brushes. Beautiful.
Does he have a perfect pitch? He sang killing me softly in exact tune as the original, crazy cool!!!!
I think he's just a great musician!
Quite good and smooth. I saw him at a drum clinic a LONG time ago. Perhaps he doesn't even remember. Some drum shop in Delaware about 25 or so years ago.
Absolutely loved this! Thanks Peter and Drumeo, great lesson!
David Curtis Drumming
Those drums sound so damn good. In love with those hats too
Peter Erskine is so great in creating athmosphere.

This turned into an asmr video quickly.
D Kerr true
Pete, you so “everyman” that it’s really fun watching you.
Hi Mr. Erskin, thank you very much for this video. Very good information on Brushes. Great info.
Best video so far. Thanks for this and thanks a million to the legendary Peter Erskine for doing it. AND, thanks to Peter for keeping his shirt on. If you have ever seen any of the live Weather Report vids where he is shirtless, you will be thankful also! LOL!
Show us how it’s done Peter I’m 74 and I’ve listen to you for many of those years. Thanks Pete John Cardinali.
Peter is so cool---a perfect musician!
Jared: "You've played in, what, 600 albums...?"
Peter: "Hm.. yeah, about 600."
No biggie. what a legend. hahaha
Teacher of teachers, an absolute master of the instrument. those 69 suckers that downvoted this video 1) do not play the drums and have no idea what they're talking about; 2) play the drums, can't use brushes for anything other than styling their metal hair and/or suck terribly because they don't learn anything from the masters.
Jared can you please bring Jojo Mayer, Morgan Agren or Chris Dave i would do anything to watch a Drumeo video with them!!!
ANYthing???!
Damn, his ride playing is absolutely incredible.
This guys like the Mr. Miyagi oh drumming, cool guy, loved the lesson
Brilliant player - Brilliant educator.
31:15 there's a lot there(variants). so nice .....starts vertical stick motion into 45 degree address.... which catches some of the upbeats on the right hand and down beats on the left ..... pretty fat sound
Amazing lesson Drumeo! IT WOULD BE FANTASTIC IF YOU INVITE TROY WRIGHT
I have spoken with Troy before. The biggest hurdle in that situation is the 20 hour flight between Australia and Canada :)
Drumeo haha I imagine, thank you for answering!
Great player, educator and person. Surprised there aren't more views

THANK YOU VERY MUCH JARED DRUMEO THIS IS IT
Good Drums brushes lesson!!!!THE MASTER!
LIVING LEGEND!
Good lesson!
you can tell hes just having so much fun playing
Not sure if I missed it but is the Remo Fiberskyn drum head considered integral, or is this just a head PE prefers? I'm currently trying a Aquarian texture coated, and starting to think that the coating might be hampering my brush work where as something smooth like a FiberSkyn might be livelier.
Great video and PE is first class! His son Damian is local here in Portland as well :)
Really good drum beats
Phenomenal. Erskine in tremendous.
hi, have you ever had Jeff Hamilton do a lesson with you guys?
Hands of a surgeon
Beautiful
Drumeo should get Chris Coleman or Eric Moore to do a lesson, overall great lesson! Never really knew how to use brushes, got some as a gift lol
