Another brilliant "The Sessions" interview with a deep, thoughtful musician who I've loved , admired and made great music with every time he's at the kit! What a touch, what a teacher. Thanks Dom, for bringing us these words & stories from the legendary Peter Erskine!
Will Lee dear mr lee. So nice to see that even cats like you enjoy these series. I wish you all the best! Keep on groovin‘ Sir! Merry xmas and a happy new year!
I absolutely LOVE Peter Erskine. My wife is sick of me saying "Alexa, play Peter Erskine" I'm soon getting a new phone, as soon as I do first thing I'm doing is downloading his Apps. Keep the passion Peter! Dom - beautiful 👍👍🎶🥁😎DC
Wonderful man, amazing career !!! I saw him in a little club in LA while I was in music school...and for the next 2 months I NEVER practiced anything louder than double pianissimo. He was sooooo impressive, so dynamic, so musical....now that’s what we call an influence. By the way, it worked; Carl Schafer complimented my control and dynamics during a performance of his jazz class, and it really changed the way I LISTEN to myself, to others, to the group as a whole. Thanks Masta Peta !!!!!!!!
Thanks for showing this interview. What a wonderful person is Peter Erskine . He has been a blessing to millions through his life and music. God bless you, Peter, now and forever.
I went to a clinic Peter put on in Portland Maine years ago. Wonderful man always ready to answer questions about drumming and his life as a musician. Thanks so much Dom for doing these drummer sessions. So much knowledge . Much appreciated.
i had pleasure of meeting Peter Erskine in Clearwater Florida Kapok sam ash music store .He play concert John Patituci Bass!!! John Abemcrombi guitar!!!Wow He is Frendli person+world class Performer andTeacher Neil Peart RUSH is his student!!!
What a beautiful interview from Dom and a real nice guy Peter Eskine I love hearing how these drummers start and their journeys through music these interviews are brilliant
I really like talking music with guys like this....few and far between tho. Peter is truly an amazing player. First time I heard him was '85... he's never been late since '68! Nothing burns my ass more than someone late for a gig.
Love Peter's work with Weather Report, I have a bootleg of Weather Report I recorded at Hammersmith Appollo London, What a show, It took a little while learning some of Peter's grooves from that show. Check out Peter's tuition video's with the late great Guitarist John Abercrombie & Bassist Marc Johnson, very intuitive stuff, R.I.P. John. Also check out Peter's first solo album "Transition" amazing record. Peter also has a few albums with drums and the same tracks without drums, high quality music. I remember going to a venue West of London to see for the first time Mr Steve Gadd, I think it was a Zildjian/Yamaha Clinic. All of a sudden the Zildjian host came on stage and apologised to 2000 drummers that Steve Gadd wasn't to well and couldn't do the clinic, as you can imagine there was huge disappointment amongst the crowd, everybody at the venue really felt for Steve Gadd, we all hoped he'd be OK. Meanwhile the Zildjian host say's " Rather than cancel today's clinic we have a world class replacement who has kindly agreed to step in for Steve Gadd, How would you feel listening to Mr Peter Erskine for the next 3 hours"? I kid you not the crowd went wild that Legend Peter Erskine was stepping in to share with us his experiences, tutorials in Jazz workshop practice. It was such a great day, a great clinic, everybody left that venue inspired, uplifted. Peter was so funny that day, he had 2000 drummers in stitches with his sense of humour, such a kind warming fella. Peter is a great player/brilliant teacher/hilarious story teller. Check out the ECM record label, you will find Peter performing on lots of these recordings also the band "Steps Ahead" Great interview Dom. R.I.P. John Abercrombie.
My favourite drummer since I was able to meet him and exchange two nervous words back in Nice in 1985 (or was it '86?). Thanks Peter and Dom! P.S. Cool lapel pin!
Hey Dom, Benny here. I will be seeing Peter and his ensemble perform at The Baked Potato tonight 11-29-18. I am very happy that Mr. Don got him to perform there. A truly musical drummer! Dom, Merry Christmas and always Happy Drumming!
Got to see Peter with WR in Melbourne ages ago and then with Steely Dan in Melbourne also. I’d like to hear his thoughts of his time with Fagen and Becker and their ensembles with amazing musicians. I also loved his work with the Zawinul band. Great story about his “graduation” in WR. Again, thanks for “The Sessions Panel”.
Peter Erskine is tremendous! Dom, thanks for these videos! While application videos on kit are very useful, too, I like hearing experiences of legends, what sparked them initially, what drives them and their philosophies. So many drummers miss the value of that. As Peter stated, drumming is a language. It's great to help others expand their vocabularies. Drumming style to me is expression of personality, who someone is and their mood at the time of a performance. Your series makes that link for us. Very grateful for these.
If you want to have a good thought-provoking nutritional entertaining read I highly recommend getting Peter Erskine's fascinating autobiography titled "No Beethoven".
Peter is a musical drummer. Plays many styles so well. Knows when to underplay, or just swing. That is why so many people wanted him in their band. He totally gets what a drummer should do. BTW-- Dom is a fantastic player, educator, and drumming historian.
Man I love these sessions...such a treat. Peter is lovely to listen to, I mean these guys are the carriers of the torch and are so humble...Thanks for putting these interviews up for us all to enjoy..only problem is ... I'm not getting any work done...I'm watching The session panel videos !!!! :-D
Erskine, Brecker Bros, Grolnick, Sanborn, Maineri ,Shorter Go hand in hand! East Coast at it's best, Check out P, Erskine's You Never Know Lp Clapperclowe with J. Taylor on Piano, Indiana U is considered on of the Best Orchestral schools in the Country
listen to his drumming on Kentons Fire and Furry. Ridiculous time signatures by Levy. Peter handled it like candy, esp the chart Pete is a 4 letter word

One of the nicest most gracious musicians I've ever met! Love this guy.
👍🙂‼️A supremely cool dude and fantastic drummer! Thank you!
We don't want to embarrass this humble man but Peter Erskine is a professor of drumming who sets a phd level of playing and understanding drumming

Peter Erskine is the ultimate sensor in my music life, as a drummer! He is a legend in so many ways!

there's a tune by Steps Ahead called Islands and Peter's touch on that track is a thing of beauty. So sweet!!

Becker said he might be the best drummer!!!!!!!!
Imagine how good you have to be to drum with Jaco Pastorius, Joe Zawinul, and Wayne Shorter. The level of musicianship doesn't get any higher.
and mr. erskine was brought into weather report on jaco’s recommendation! that says even more
Peter's a total monster of a drummer.
I love that Peter said, “ We don’t need to be told to practice.” Like every aspect in life, Passion and love are the driving forces.
