First look at the Boeing 787 Dreamliner in Microsoft Flight Simulator following the AAU2 update

  • Tonight I took the Boeing 787 Dreamliner up for a quick test flight from San Jose International, just south of the San Francisco bay in California. I have very rarely looked at the 787 in the past because it was quite poor - that all seems to have changed following the recent "Aircraft and Avionics Update" in Microsoft Flight Simulator.

      When you do a direct in Boeings (such as you were) it uses your current heading and draws a route from there. So when you were in gate it assumes you were going from that heading. Also, you can start both engines at once since they are started electrically and not via bleed air

      After a major update a week or so ago, My b787 and b747 will no longer follow navigation instructions. Whether I use the world map to set departure and arrival, or use the flight management system. Is anyone else having this problem. NOTE- It does not affect my b777, b767, a320. The b787 and b747 WILL following heading instructions, but not LNAV. They just flight straight.

    Excellent. One day I'll try and cold start an airliner. I haven't yet. This and the 747, stock planes along with the 310. Can't beat that. Of course, deluxe package required for 787. Then along with FBW A320, it's even better.

    Like you Jon, I have only briefly dabbled with the 787 but this vid will make me go and explore the new update. Sometimes you just need someone to hold your hand through getting things started to speed up too much reading and study... nice to see it in a vid so thanks.

    Just a side note about the fuel control. You do not have to wait until 20% N1. You can start both engines at the same time on the overhead and set both fuel controls to on immediately after engine start.

      @@jonbeckett I do fly the 87 IRL, yes start both at the same time, don't wait for any N1. Just flip the switches and let it do its job. Hell we train to NOT intervene for any kind of failed start, but to let the automation handle it.
      Some other notes. You would never use the aft external power unless the APU is inop and you are using the ground power to start the engines. It requires maintenance to open that panel and is a PITA. Forward two only for normal ops.
      On takeoff advance the thrust levers to about 40% N1 then select the TOGA switches to enable the autothrottles.
      Don't know if the sim has it, but on the Navigational Display (ND), select the menu on the top right and select the vertical profile. We leave it on all the time and is super helpful.

    I have tried this one as well as the 747-8 and found the 747-8 was fine on flight from EGCC to EGPH and behaved well all the way to the parking. However, the 787 was not so good. The takeoff, climb and cruse was fine. The plane descended fine down to 10000 feet but refused to descend below 10000 feet so I had to do that manually down to 3000 feet and then the approach and landing was fine. I have tried this several times but the result was still the same. Initially I did have the Heavy mod which I removed and replaced with the AAU2 update. Everything except what I mentioned worked just fine. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

    Excellent as always, thank you very much. One question, where do I find the update for this jewel? I have got the Standard, Premium and Delux versions of the MSFS and therefore the 787 which I have really enjoyed in the past. However, now the AutoThrottle is stuck on and can't be moved and the speed is uncontrollable and goes to flat out. I do actually have the "Heavy" mod but that has worked fine in the past but I'm not sure if that could have caused some issues with new updates.

    Question is setting up a flight plan in the World map menu i never get the arrival destination while i'm in the plane, the plan stops before the arrival airport (even though) i set it in the world map complete with waypoints, this plane confuses me.

    Did you have to put the ILS frequency in or was it automatic when you picked the approach runway in the fmc?

    you can do auto land during cat 1. one of my professors who teaches at embry riddle flew for united, and they would do auto lands even if its clear skies

      That seems a bit odd. The ILS needs to support autoland. In LittleNavMap, it's in the details of the ILS.

    Since the update, during landing, the toggle reverse thrusters button that I have keyed into my Logitech joystick will not work until it's slowed down to 30 knots, which I havent got a clue why. I am puting the throttles down to idle first during touchdown. The same function works normal in the Airbus 320, so I know it is mapped on the right key. The "Hold Reversers ' button will kick them on, but it is more awkward to keep holding it down. Anybody else have this problem? It used to work fine on this plane before the update it seems.

    I don't know what Asobo/Microsoft did with the latest update but none of the buttons that power up the electrical systems (battery, external power, and APU) work anymore when I use the mouse, not even the default Alt-B on the keyboard work. I tried the Cntrl-E on the keyboard, and that started both engines but it failed to activate the battery switch, it did however activate the external power sources, which gave me enough time to program the FMC. Of course, the electrical systems turned off about 10 minutes after push back from the gate. All those systems used to work normally prior to the last update.

    I love little nav map but it doesn’t have or better yet has way more Sid’s and approachs arrivals then are on the fmc especially in the pmdg

    I had a issue here with the default 787 & also the 747-8 how can I fix an aircraft just pitching up in the air espacially when the aircraft is accelerating down the runway for take off then it just pitches up by itself again in the air to the point of stall? So what I should i do to fix the problem? By adjusting the pitch trim on the yoke or using the altn trim?

      It sounds like you have a controller configuration issue. I have trim on the hat switch on my joystick, so I can trim immediately if necessary.

    Did something happen with the thrust reversers? For some reason I can't activate them until the plane already has slowed under 40 knots or so, which defeats the purpose of them... The other planes they function ok still-- a320 and citation etc

      If you use the world map to plan your flight, *probably* (I'm not in a position to check). In the real world the pilots can't just put the autopilot on - that's what's fascinating for me about the big jets - learning how they work :)

    Is this the standard 787 you get when you have premium ? If so does lnav vnav work ? And are there good sounds. Thinking of upgrading

      The 787 comes with premium. It's not wonderfully accurate, but it's not bad either :) VNAV seems to work "to a fashion" :)

    Loaded the plane but throttle and yoke not responding to imputs and availible power not switching on even though shows avail. Is There something i must do before loading plane such as update

      Sounds like you might have a software conflict. Did you have any mods installed for the 787 previously ?

    Normally, I set my destination in the world map. Set attitude, vs and cruise speed. Hit LNAV and the plane routes and flies to the destination. Since this update LNAV will not activate. So the plane just flies in the straight line from the runway heading. What changed?

      The FMC became more realistic - you cannot get away with just setting the route outside of the aircraft any more - you have to learn how to program the FMC.

      @@jonbeckett thanks for responding to the question. But a lot of users like me I'm not trying to get so immersive that they start the plane with engines off at the gate.
      What's the purpose of having a world map to route a course, but no longer be able to simply fly it? It's extremely frustrating, to have software that you can no longer use, that has been providing an easy route to get in the air for more than 2 years. I switch back to flight simulator x, when I want to fly the 787 and 747.

    I've had an issue with both the 787 and the 747 in this update, when i go into external view, the autopilot starts bugging out and simply ignores the flight plan, does anyone else have this issue?

    Hi! Ive been trying to fly this and the 747 and they are not follwing the flight plans i put in. I dont know how to change it over from follwing a vor to the route planned in the navigation screen could someone point me in the right direction TIA!

      I'm pretty sure LNAV refers to programmed waypoints in the 747 and 787. If you want to fly a VOR radial, you'll need to set the course and heading appropriately, and adjust as you go. That said, approach mode will capture the ILS localiser rather than using GPS.

    How do you take away the update from 787 engines on Xbox are slowed downed like for throttle up so I want to know how to fix that please the update is making me not play with the 787 anymore.

    when ever i try to start the 787 the external power is available but i cant push it it doesnt give power to the aircraft.

      Really? You will still need batteries, and the APU.

      I've also experienced the same issue with the LNAV, which failed to follow the waypoints defined in the flight route. The flight simulator also froze after about 2 hours at cruise altitude. So Asobo has broken something in the last update.

    i use the game on game pass, if i buy the premium deluxe edition will it remove all of the air craft i’ve bought?? and it’s cheaper on the microsoft store so if i buy it there will i have the actual game or will it still be game pass but i will also just have the premium deluxe?

      anything you have bought in-game is tied to your xbox account. If you buy the premium deluxe version, you'll have your old stuff available, AND the other stock aircraft that come with premium deluxe.

    Can someone please help me. The 787 does not work for me. Every time I try to start it up, it starts up for a bit then shuts back down and I can’t see anything on the screen.

      You probably have an issue with your controllers doing something odd. Start from the default profile, create a new one, and work from there. I know certain controllers (Honeycomb, for example) have issues with the default power switch behaviour.

    Love your style of videos. And get why you do such abbreviated flight routes. Once in a while you might consider an realistic flight? I mean 5000 feet top altitude for a 787 has probably never happened.

      I'm experiencing the same issue also, along with the battery and the APU switches. I reported it as a bug in Zendesk and I'm waiting to hear back.

    The 787s engine start is automatic . Yo do not have to wait for any N2 or N3 value
    Engine Start Procedure
    Select the secondary engine indications. F/O
    Crew action to correct for abnormal engine indications is not needed.
    Respond to any EICAS messages that show.
    Start sequence .......................................................Announce C
    The engines may be started at the same time.
    Call “START ____ ENGINE” C
    Engine START selector ............................................START F/O
    FUEL CONTROL switch .............................................RUN C
    If the engines were not started at the same time:
    After the engine is stabilized at idle, start the other engine.
    There are also several procedural mistakes on the video. Do not take it like a tutorial since it does not follow Boeing SOPs for instance never preselect vertical speed for takeoff

      Freat feedback, I didn't say this was a tutorial :) I often show different functionality of aircraft purely to show the functionality. Of course in the real world the crew would use VNAV, or flight level change :)

    I am definitely not a fan of this new cockpit layout, because I can no longer go to the world map, set my destination. Then, start the flight put it on LNAV and it route to the destination I put in there. Some of you guys like this immersive stuff from startup. The rest of us just want to start it on the runway and have it go to the destination, that we set up on the world map.
    Have we lost that simple flight ability from point a to point b?

    This plane is very broken! Flight model is worse than before, constant ctd and very buggy! The engine sounds are better but I can’t distinguish a difference between the GE or RR engines!!!

      Did you remove any other mods for it ? I didn't have any, and have not had any issues.
