Lars can still do double bass. I went to a show when he was actually doing the double bass to Reign in Blood. He's just lazy and knows when people go to live shows, most people don't really give a fucking shit about like things like that!
As a drummer myself i can tell you that playing a long gig and then doing some fast double kick sections is just simply not easy. Your calves are tired as hell.
Lars had some good double bass chops back in the 80's and then after the success of the black album he started getting lazy and not practicing and his skill declined from there... this is just sad i could play this perfectly when i was 15
"Most of his kit is triggered, but not to sample sounds. When playing live, these triggers go to a "noise gate" which prevents the mics from picking up the "ambient" noise the concert and only allows the sound of the hits to be heard. In concert, the kicks are very pronounced because of thise, however, in the "LiveMetallicA" releases, the sound is not recorded from the "noise gate" but from the acoustic mics on the kick drum. This leads to what sounds like dropped and missing double bass fills."
His knees are perfectly fine. (Any drummer will tell you that playing a double bass is NOT about knees.) It's called "lack of practice and talent, and resorting to copy and paste techniques in the studio, thus resulting in being unable to play drum tracks in a live situation."
Well you shouldn't. Does a cop grow tired of some random street gangsters, and just end their life? Nope. Does a fireman get tired of burning houses and stop putting the fire down? Nope. It's his job, he chose it, he's just have to live with the and do his goddamn best EVERY FUCKING NIGHT! That is the true musicianship.
u know playing under lights like that really gets u heated during a show. and they are onstage for awhile, i mean there's no excuse when u have been playing that song for many years but lars was probably getting burnt out
I thought it might be fake at first, because his legs don't quite seem in sync with the sounds, and also the bass drum sound seems weird. But listening to the way it speeds up once he gets part way through the double bass bit and realises he's making a fool of himself, I'm pretty well convinced it's real. And I never could stand his drumming anyway, so this makes me happy.
@rmarcontell he's had a cut on the side of his palm for while now, its now healed but he says rubbing it against the strings and moving it around a lot tends to re-open the wound
LARS who kept the shame known as modern Metallica going. LARS who played after coke, while the late Gar Samuelson played during and after many substances in his system (played better than Lars too). LARS who fails to play his own songs.
HE NEVER USES CHEATING TRIGGERS AS ALMOST ALL YOUNG DRUMMERS?AND THAT DAY HE WASN'T IN GOOD SHAPE. SO WHAT ? He in vented with James and Mustaine and new way of playing and a new style of music: thrash metal. He s a legend and a true musician, his music will always live..
@mikelron The sound of the bass drum I believe was enhanced for a more clear and vibrant effect but if you watched people who recorded the performance using their own cameras, you clearly see his leg work. In the Nimes DVD itself, you can see him doing double bass.
That's what happens when you are getting ready to turn 40. He's been playing for close to thirty years, the tendons and cartilage in his knees are probably worn down tremendously. But his still got enough grit to get up on stage and play through the pain. He's still an excellent drummer, but them knee's ain't what they used to be.
inb4 "but lars is so old now of course he's not gonna play like he did when he was 25!" Even though several other drummer are just as old and even older and still playing just as great as they did in their younger days. I love Metallica but I really don't get why this video has so many dislikes. It's truth that Lars has gotten sloppy as hell. You can't deny it no matter how hard you try and cry.
He didn't practise much in late 90's. I read it from the unofficial book, where Jason said that. Might be from a interview. But yes, he was and still is out of practice :/
It sounded like this the last time I saw them in here in Norway. Maybe this is why he won't trigger his bassdrum. When he fucks up like this with a triggered bassdrum, it would sound 10x worse...
because he's clearly trying to play the sextuplet beat. you can hear what it's supposed to be, but it comes out a sloppy mess because he can't open up his rhythms.
I can kinda agreed on that, but I have always considered him as a drummer that focuses more on fills. his fills ain't fast but he plays it in his way which serparates him from other drummers.
Lars is a solid drummer, but not with the double pedal, I think that is something many can agree on. Lars is not about speed, he is about playing a tight beat and fills.
they weren't doctored. this is the actual live performance shot by a fan in Mexico 2009. this whole concert was also shot for a Live DVD and listen to Lars throughout the WHOLE performance. he's a great live drummer. these LiveMet MP3s do NOT do him Justice. /watch?v=1Wnor6G-hcU
As a Metclub Member and huge Metallica. First off Lars is not 49 and secondly age is no excuse for his lack of double bass, lazy and sloppy playing. Dave Lombard, Danny Carey, Pete Sandoval all are around Lars age and all can still play the drums top notch. Lars drumming is lacks because he never learned proper drum technique when he was younger and he admits it. Thats the biggest thing he wishes he could have done and learned.
I've heard that it sounds like this because the sound engineer does a horrible job EQ'ing both bass drums so one sounds louder than the other, but if that's not the case, this is absolutely pathetic.
when metallica was recording the song st. anger, lars did the double bass part WITH HIS HANDS :D:D:D becouse he couldn't do it with his feet :D:D. AND THAT'S A FACT.
I was a pro drummer and used to have to play 6 nights a week. I found out that ....sometimes....your muscles will simply fatigue and you'll have nights when the coordination can lapse a bit. Kind of like a computer gliche. Weird thing and frustrating to the drummer. Usually just means that you need a rest from the drums for a few days.
As if one clip would tell the whole truth. Check out the Rock am Ring gig, Lars plays very well there. Dont know what his problem was in Korea, where this clip is from.
have you ever tought that his fckin pedal is broken or somth fcked at it...and he couldn't stop to change it in the middle of the song...or maybe it was somethin' else...there could have been 1000 reasons... after he played this a thousand times perfectly ...he messes it up once and you all "jump" on him :| d'oh
They "correct" some of the live stuff he does on official releases now, as far as I know.. He WAS once able to do it right, though.. Watch the Kill/Ride medleys from 94/95, they haven't been messed around with, and he kills it.
DOuble bass is essential for thrash metal. It is not necessary to sit and analyze part by part of the song to notice that there is something very wrong with lars's drumming.
what i meant, was that IF Lars was as good drummer as James is a guitarist, Metallica would be something so much more that they are now.. as you see from this video, Lars has become sloppy and lazy
come on.. Lars is awesome! the power in his drumming is amazing and not many drummers have that! he may not have the 'skills' of joey but he can get the simplest thing and make it in to a masterpiece!! thats why he is a great drummer
Dave Lombardo is about the same age.......he's still tearing it up. It isn't age. Lars is just lazy and unmotivated. He started with downsizing his kit and has continued with downsizing his drumming output since.
The age card is worthless when Nicko - who's ten years older - is doing just fine. Lombardo's about Lars' age and is great. Lars just lost it when he started with his oversimplifying in the Black Album. I wonder if he even practices that much anymore.
Sounds like a flat tire xD
Lars can still do double bass. I went to a show when he was actually doing the double bass to Reign in Blood.
He's just lazy and knows when people go to live shows, most people don't really give a fucking shit about like things like that!
When you play this song about a thousand times in the time period of over 20 years about, you get fucking tired of it.
It sounds like he ate a pound of beans before he went on stage.
As a drummer myself i can tell you that playing a long gig and then doing some fast double kick sections is just simply not easy. Your calves are tired as hell.

The description is completely wrong, sextuplet semi-quavers on double bass drums is NOT entry level
@Deanger Smith
"you're all fuckheads for dissing Lars, he kicks your asses in his sleep!"
I don't think so.
But maybe he farts in his sleep.
Sounds like me when I first learned how to play One. Completely sloppy and timing is way off. Good thing he has James and Kirk there.
Lars is not messing up. It is the way the sound of that concert was recorded. Lars still nails that part live, trust me.
LMAO!
Its hard to believe after all these years he still can't do something so rudimentary.
The thing is Lars isn't Dave Lombardo, everyone ages differently
His knees are perfectly fine. (Any drummer will tell you that playing a double bass is NOT about knees.)
It's called "lack of practice and talent, and resorting to copy and paste techniques in the studio, thus resulting in being unable to play drum tracks in a live situation."
it does kinda suck, but props to him for using mics, not triggers.
everyone slows down when they are old...
Well you shouldn't. Does a cop grow tired of some random street gangsters, and just end their life? Nope. Does a fireman get tired of burning houses and stop putting the fire down? Nope. u know playing under lights like that really gets u heated during a show. and they are onstage for awhile, i mean there's no excuse when u have been playing that song for many years but lars was probably getting burnt out
He's been drumming for how long? he cant master something that takes 5 minutes a day to practice
Well, he's made hundreds of millions drumming so he must be doing something right.
after 20 years of drumming, he isn't bound to be fucking perfect, and all you people slating him couldn't drum as good as him [period]
I bet if a normal guy would record a video playing like that he would be covered of insults, but Lars Ulrich can...
BAH...
i was worse in dublin in 09, kirk forgot the started of the solo, it was such a build up, and then, nothing, i nearly cried
I thought it might be fake at first, because his legs don't quite seem in sync with the sounds, and also the bass drum sound seems weird. this is what happens when you base your practice on appraisal from fans
James sounds a hundred times more cringeworthy than Lars in that video.
His double bass skills sounds like some old saggy mans fart. :S
no, it ALWAYS happens.
that's a direct quote from the sound mixers who mic his drums....
i don't care...he founded the worlds best metal band thats all the credit he needs
Lombardo is the same age and is now better than before in double bass. Age is not an excuse.
Cant belive this video is still up here. Dont you understand this is over two years old? He plays alot better these days.
Anyway see the newer vid of James playing this double bass perfectly?
That was the 137th take. He got lucky.
@mikelron
The sound of the bass drum I believe was enhanced for a more clear and vibrant effect but if you watched people who recorded the performance using their own cameras, you clearly see his leg work. In the Nimes DVD itself, you can see him doing double bass.
lars is better seeing him live then watching it on a video
That's what happens when you are getting ready to turn 40. He's been playing for close to thirty years, the tendons and cartilage in his knees are probably worn down tremendously. But his still got enough grit to get up on stage and play through the pain. He's still an excellent drummer, but them knee's ain't what they used to be.
Sounds like he's playing a pair of pillows!
Nicko McBrain only has to use one pedal to generate the same effect of 2.
i know thats bad but does no one realise how warm it must be there?!
inb4 "but lars is so old now of course he's not gonna play like he did when he was 25!"
Even though several other drummer are just as old and even older and still playing just as great as they did in their younger days.

Sure man, that's why Neil Peart always botches the solo in Tom Sawyer.
Wait, what.
that awkward moment when the drummer can't keep time.
the other band members do the work, he just hangs along
He didn't practise much in late 90's. I read it from the unofficial book, where Jason said that. Might be from a interview. But yes, he was and still is out of practice :/
..the funny part about this is that the first shot of lars it looks like his actually smelling his feet and they stink! :P
that's your grammy award winning band..
i noticed this when i saw them live playing one, he does like 5 less bass drum hits than he did when he was younger. bastard.
It sounded like this the last time I saw them in here in Norway. Maybe this is why he won't trigger his bassdrum. When he fucks up like this with a triggered bassdrum, it would sound 10x worse...
because he's clearly trying to play the sextuplet beat. you can hear what it's supposed to be, but it comes out a sloppy mess because he can't open up his rhythms.
it not about how fast you can play, or how good, it the result that matters..
I can kinda agreed on that, but I have always considered him as a drummer that focuses more on fills. his fills ain't fast but he plays it in his way which serparates him from other drummers.
Lars Ulrich doesn't use triggers.
maybe this was after bob crushed his foot...?
Lars is a solid drummer, but not with the double pedal, I think that is something many can agree on. Lars is not about speed, he is about playing a tight beat and fills.

/watch?v=1Wnor6G-hcU
dude, he's in his mid 40's of course he can't play what he used to
Yeah, I noticed that too. I wonder who's using it.
As a Metclub Member and huge Metallica. First off Lars is not 49 and secondly age is no excuse for his lack of double bass, lazy and sloppy playing. Dave Lombard, Danny Carey, Pete Sandoval all are around Lars age and all can still play the drums top notch. his bass drums sound like they are tuned too low
i havent seen him play dyers eve ever perfectly, and i have heard even the album drums
when metallica was recording the song st. anger, lars did the double bass part WITH HIS HANDS :D:D:D becouse he couldn't do it with his feet :D:D. AND THAT'S A FACT.
holy shit i kno dyers eve is like suicide if u tride playing drums to that
That's because they played the song at half speed. Isn't it a lot faster on the cd?
thats exactly what i tell ppl when they act like xDRUMPLAYERx
He can't keep time either and speeding up at that part only makes his double bass sound worse.
Search for LARS ULRICH INSANE DOUBLE BASS !!!
Just watch my video "Lars Ulrichs feet does NOT stink". Then you'll see...
@mangosnake Its called overdubbing in the studio
As if one clip would tell the whole truth. Check out the Rock am Ring gig, Lars plays very well there. Dont know what his problem was in Korea, where this clip is from.
You're not a fan of Lars? That's the man!
have you ever tought that his fckin pedal is broken or somth fcked at it...and he couldn't stop to change it in the middle of the song...or maybe it was somethin' else...there could have been 1000 reasons...
after he played this a thousand times perfectly ...he messes it up once and you all "jump" on him :|
d'oh
yes i play drums. and when i went to see them last year, Lars played Battery perfectly.
The drumming on St. Anger is pretty bad mixed, but he's on-time with his double bass there, yes.
They "correct" some of the live stuff he does on official releases now, as far as I know.. He WAS once able to do it right, though.. Watch the Kill/Ride medleys from 94/95, they haven't been messed around with, and he kills it.
maybe his feet hurt because there concerts are freaking long and like 90% of their songs have like tons of foot pedaling (chicken wings)
DOuble bass is essential for thrash metal. It is not necessary to sit and analyze part by part of the song to notice that there is something very wrong with lars's drumming.
Proof that Lars does the double bass, watch the entire video.
You can see it, but you can't hear it. WHY? Don't ask me.
/watch?v=NQT9JKeCa4w
HOLY FUK! This is atrocious! Are his legs ASLEEEEP?!?!?!....GODDAMN!
come on asians!! where are the mosh pits?
slang for metallica
Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden is over 50 and he still rocks.
Im a huge metallica fan, but instead of getting a new bassist, get a new drummer GOSH!
what i meant, was that IF Lars was as good drummer as James is a guitarist, Metallica would be something so much more that they are now.. as you see from this video, Lars has become sloppy and lazy
Best comment on this vid!
It`s a part of being a human, you gets older!
LARS ROCKS!!!!
come on.. Lars is awesome! the power in his drumming is amazing and not many drummers have that! he may not have the 'skills' of joey but he can get the simplest thing and make it in to a masterpiece!! thats why he is a great drummer
He’s terrible…
Nah he’s one of the worst metal drummers
What do you expect the guy is in his 40s
yes might be right, but excuse me..
he wrote that song.
this is hilarious
Dave Lombardo is about the same age.......he's still tearing it up. It isn't age.
Lars is just lazy and unmotivated. He started with downsizing his kit and has continued with downsizing his drumming output since.
This has happened on more then one show...
@iTzDANiiEL
Self taught. Aged at 47.
Yes, unless your standards are incredibly high.
I think S&M was one of his last shows where he could play for sure. Now he's just...bad.
In his defense, they do play the song a little fast than usual
that show was awesome! i was amazed by his drumming especially in one and master
The age card is worthless when Nicko - who's ten years older - is doing just fine. Lombardo's about Lars' age and is great.
Lars just lost it when he started with his oversimplifying in the Black Album. I wonder if he even practices that much anymore.
no hes not, he has a son dude and he rocks
