REDLINE was the kind of movie that for me personally was a sleeper hit. Someone up the chain didn't do a very good job getting word out about the movie in my own expereince, it was something I instead stumbled across on RUclips a full that stayed on my favourites till something took it down... but now that its under my skin, I can't seem to find it anywhere (as a paying customer). Not streamed and not on obscure store shelves in DVD or Bluray form ... like I didn't even know some of the characters in REDLINE had appeared in other shows till I stumbled across this video in my recommendations! What the heck, there was another way to get a slight hit of REDLINE this whole time for this casual in remote Canada?!? I wouldn't mind being a customer, damn!
Most animated pictures are doomed to fail since it's a huge investment with unlikely reimbursement, not impossible to claw your way out of , but passion projects are better suited to those who are willing to keep it small and dedicated, when corps get involved it tends to mire them , give credit to madhouse they let them be albeit pushing them towards the end to hurry up , and as stated in the JP Times article there's been some investor interest in a sequel but from outside japan
@@Stevem I’d gladly wait 7 more years for a sequel. (I’d be nearly 40 by then) Sadly, unless they got the right people on board AND already had ideas for a sequel from the period of time that they made the first one, I’m not confident the magic would still be there. The movie evokes a visceral feeling that is specific, but difficult to describe. Kinda the same feeling as Air Gear. I’ve never been a fan of racing, but I think Redline is in my top 3 anime movies.
@@corwinnius honestly i doubt it would happen in the same way simply because Koike is getting on a bit more now he was 43 or so when he was interviewed after the movie came out its a decade later now and spending that much time on one film might be difficult now and yeah the lightning in the bottle might be gone id rather see a short or a game really
as someone whose worked on short traditionally i think the creator behind Puparia is working real hard but not very smart and this could become a problem later on. scanning everyframe instead of using a photopress is madness i know because ive done it, he's willing to use digital for some stuff but not other that could really help his process such as masks or digital block colouring figures then overlaying traditional techniques. even if he uses a tablet i understand he might be more comfortable with that one but he might work faster with a screen tablet for cutting out stuff or clean up depending, its really about how far youre willing to move into tech that can beenfit and streamline the process with minimal change to the actual product like is he willing to use blender or AE to do parallax shots or is he actually gonna be painting on some glass and moving it himself
Remember when anime was cool and experimental, and gave absolutely zero f***s what anyone thought about it? That's Redline, in a nutshell. Damn, I miss those days... 😓

You don't know how much your channel have changed my last over the past few months I discovered it, coming home each day after a stressful day here in Japan and just connet my TV to watch these documentary means a lot to me
You know, when one actually starts practicing something they appreciate the craft a lot more. I started animating recently and I'm just so blown away by Koike, more so than before I knew what went into animating, truly stunning.
I like the message you gave off near the end when you said "You just might just vanish one day" that really shows how you should enjoy every moment you share with your loved ones. They could go at any moment.
Redline caught me completely by surprise. Was completely floored. Watched it many, many times absorbing as much of the hyperkinetic visuals as humanly possible. Thank you for making this very detailed and enlightening video about its creation. Thoroughly enjoyed.
Redline is a Visual Spectacle. It's amazing how Takeshi Koike and everyone else involved were able to get this film made, especially with the deadlines.
I just saw redline a couple days or so, and cheap or not. It was just beautiful and incredible! And the beginning race, dear God at the beginning race! Never in my life have I seen that amount of speed in an anime. I mean when JP popped a can of nitro in the tank and took off I felt winded! That is one of the greatest senses of speed you can ever have.
Redline was a film that got me through a very dark time in my life and opened up a massive creative drive in me that was drowned from years of depression and hopelessness during my transition from middle to high school. For me the biggest interest of the entire film was JP's Trans AM (Both versions) being a car guy I think my friend knew I would love it when he recommended it to and started my love for anime. This film inspired me for many years to make lego models based on the redline vehicles but the one that stuck out to me the most was the Trans AM 20000. It kept me busy and distracted from all the things that made my life a living hell and shaped me as the person I am now. A model kit was promised many years ago but was never produced due to some kind of budget error and very few were made and given away at a convention and some of them being contest prizes. I still have a massive archive of photos featuring these lego creations, I think it's time I finally did a video on it given the positive impact left on me at a young age.
I tell everyone i meet that Redline is probably my favorite anime film of all time. It is utterly impossible to capture what it does in any other form. Great video!
Just watched Redline two days ago, the sudden stop at the end felt like going cold-turkey from a drug. I hope this video, and others like it, get the word out to the world about this movie. It's truly special how in just the opening you can get insanely hooked.
As one of the exceedingly tiny handful of folks who saw REDLINE in Japanese theaters on its single-day roadshow, I've gotta say even I learned a fair bit about Koike's career from this one - that said, that one-day roadshow and the associated merchandising fallout (related to them going over schedule and the distributor pulling their contract) was even palpable at the time. Placing so much of REDLINE on Koike's shoulders is, for better or worse, the Japanese animation industry's ultimate moment meeting the double-edged sword of auteur theory. I do remember hearing a bit more emphasis on Ishii's relationship to the movie at the time of its release but I feel like his name in relationship to the film has been ah, eroded with time. Also, funny note about the "cosplaying rejects from a porno" line - in the subs from the Japanese region blu-ray, that is indeed the line they use, making the US region sub track actually *better* by some minor miracle
Coming from Germany, there is a Movie festival spanning over several Cities over Germany called the Fantasy Film Fest. They also showed Redline when it came out. Sadly Germany isn't the best place for Comics or Animation and so it was on around 1 or 2 PM on a Sunday. For sure I went and was one of only a few other viewers. I loved every minute and was wishing more were sitting there to see this madness unfolding in such slick car n race animation. For sure I had to buy the BluRay right away.
As an animator myself I love seeing anime critique from people that actually know about animation and anime instead of the current "big" anime youtuber takes that really only know to watch it. They're entertaining, that's for sure, but I was def missing a place with more informed content
Great video. I hold Redline up as an animation technical masterpiece second only to Akira. since the moment i saw that extended intro scene on youtube a decade ago i knew the film was gonna be special. i really hope to see another ambitious project like this in my lifetime.
Ambitious projects come and go it's really depends on what your goal is in the end doesn't have to just be technical mechanisms, I imagine there's plenty to come with all manner of goals
very cool covering redline from Koike's point of view. cant help my self, after watching this, is time to jump into rewatching redline for like the 5th time
i never comment on your videos because they're so well made there is absolutely nothing i can add but that bit at the end got me, keep up the nice work.
Dammit man i can't believe i once again failed for once of those "the problem with" click bait videos saying that there a problem with something that is perfect.
well there very much are problems but they arent as black and white as this bad, while underscored i think the misinformation and lore redline has built around itself is a big problem along with the other issue brought up
woooow man thank you so much for going over all of this info! I'm 6 min in and I'm jam-packed with soo much I didn't know. Very cool and interesting stuff
Despite its flaws, missing context and all, and the over the top eng dub, everything else from the animation to the music and atmosphere made up for it. I have watched this over 100 times, not exaggerating, and it never fails to make me laugh, giggle with excitement, leak tears of joy, and give me goosebumps every time i rewatch it.
There seems to be a lot of confusion to the end of the film. Hime Supergrass(at least I think that's her name) uses her magic to create a floating zone to stop the cars. There is only about 100 yards left after the finish line before it sort of drops off, and when your travelling at a few hundred miles an hour you have a lot of stopping distance.
Excellent video! I unapologetically love both the live action Speed Racer movie and Redline, and every time I have recommended Redline to someone I always tell them to use a good pair of headphones not only for the music, but also because of the sound design all around, because the engine for every car on screen also has a personality defined by how it sounds and the team did an impressive job of making them all sound amazing. I didn't know all this had happened to make it come to life, so it was a very interesting video to watch. The production quality was great too, and thank you for providing the names of the music tracks you used throughout the video. Also, if you want to play something like Outrun, I can recommend Slipstream and Hotshot Racing, and to a lesser degree (not because they're bad, they're just not too much like Outrun but still very enjoyable) Redout, Art of rally, and Drift Stage. I hope at least one can sate that hunger for more Outrun.
Redline has so many cool details you miss the first time. Machinehead is Sonoshee’s dad. This can be seen in her reactions at the restaurant, her statement about her dad building his own cars, Machine Head being one of the few to react to her car being destroyed and his recognition of her at the final stretch. Roboworlds military is mostly used for hunting down rogue AI weapons. Those AI weapons infest planets after an ancient war that led to them being outlawed, as well as bio weapons. JP and Sonoshee aren’t human. Miki and Todoroki are the only humans in the film. This is why JP survives crashes which should kill a human. Volton's monster is called Wire Girl. The entire Redline was a plot by Supergrass to destroy Roboworld’s government. Tiedman is probably their inside mole. Roboworld is left with over 90% of their armour destroyed, most of their pilots and military leadership killed, Funky Boy and Wire Girl locked in mortal combat, as well as the destruction of their tower, dam and supercarrier. Trava and Shinkai’s Speedmaster is a mech that was turned into a car. That mech featured in Trava and the Fist Planet. JP and Sonoshee might have died, it’s up for interpretation but it would fit the ending with them floating in ghostly blue light. In addition to Trava and the Fist Planet, there’s a pilot which you should definitely watch. In some ways it captures the characters better than the movie does.
It pleases me greatly to see F-Zero GX music used in a video about Redline. As a massive F-Zero GX fan, the first time I watched Redline, I just went "THIS. THIS IS WHAT F-ZERO COULD BE."
Fantastic video, man. Just stumbled across your channel and the production quality and research are far above what I was expecting. Redline is one of my favorite animated films of all time, always loved detailed mechanical animations.
I love redline, honestly one of my all time favourate anime movies. I miss that style of hyper detailed, hand drawn artwork, reminds me of when I was a kid and the first time I saw Shirow Masamune's artwork and was... wow, just blown away.
I'm just happy it's been a bit over 10 years and people are still talking about Redline to this day. It's like no other anime movie really sticks to people's word of mouth besides Ghibli/Miyazaki movies.
Adolescence of Utena/Utena the Movie (1999) ends with a huge car race set piece that looks so similar to Redline in terms of design and movement that I was surprised to not find Koike's name in the credits of it. Definitely give it a look.
Ya know what? I'll do you a solid. You made some good points and told me more about the movie I hold dear to my heart. Thanks my man and I hope there's more to come.

its pretty hype at times especially the music
It’s on amazon man for like 11 cad
I guess passion projects are doomed to fail
Killing one dream after another
I guess we are destined to die in mediocrity
Good job on the video tho
@Erwin Lii I respect them especially puparia although I have some worry about it's processes and pipeline
as someone whose worked on short traditionally i think the creator behind Puparia is working real hard but not very smart and this could become a problem later on. scanning everyframe instead of using a photopress is madness i know because ive done it, he's willing to use digital for some stuff but not other that could really help his process such as masks or digital block colouring figures then overlaying traditional techniques. even if he uses a tablet i understand he might be more comfortable with that one but he might work faster with a screen tablet for cutting out stuff or clean up depending, its really about how far youre willing to move into tech that can beenfit and streamline the process with minimal change to the actual product like is he willing to use blender or AE to do parallax shots or is he actually gonna be painting on some glass and moving it himself
Remember when anime was cool and experimental, and gave absolutely zero f***s what anyone thought about it? That's Redline, in a nutshell.
Damn, I miss those days... 😓
It's still there, but rare.
Incredibly well researched and edited. Cool eye catch intermission. Couldn't stop watching until the end.
thank you!

Every month is Madhouse Month
never ends... never endssss
Redline is not trying to be perfect and I love it, I want to see it someday in a movie theater
You don't know how much your channel have changed my last over the past few months I discovered it, coming home each day after a stressful day here in Japan and just connet my TV to watch these documentary means a lot to me
You know, when one actually starts practicing something they appreciate the craft a lot more. I started animating recently and I'm just so blown away by Koike, more so than before I knew what went into animating, truly stunning.
as stated drawing cars is bad ennough when i dont have to make them move
Something about hearing Miyazaki talking about someone "shaking their booty" makes me laugh.
It's pretty funny that's how he described Kanada in a magazine no less and before working with him
I like the message you gave off near the end when you said "You just might just vanish one day" that really shows how you should enjoy every moment you share with your loved ones.
Redline is easily one of my favorite movies. Love it so much. Easily one of the greatest animated things ever created.
It's one of the first movies I bought on Bluray. One of those few good movies were the substance is in the style.
it is a koike style portfolio
This one legit feels like a one of thos BBC docs you would see at 11 pm
Lol that would be funny , BBC actually talking about anime with respect
I tell everyone i meet that Redline is probably my favorite anime film of all time. It is utterly impossible to capture what it does in any other form. Great video!
glad you enjoyed it
Just watched Redline two days ago, the sudden stop at the end felt like going cold-turkey from a drug. I hope this video, and others like it, get the word out to the world about this movie. It's truly special how in just the opening you can get insanely hooked.
Redline is an experience that is quite unlike any other and on that reason alone it's a must own piece of art.
How was the show? I'd love to seee the movie on the big screen, also that's weird they kept that line
Each one of these side vids in the move to extend the lore would all be incredible!
GREAT video, mate. Love your editing and drawings
i appreciate the comment
Watches it for the first time last night and I fucking loved it. Definitely one of my all time favorites now
Wow. This is unironically my favorite channel since I'm an animation major.
Makes me wonder if Stevem covered the monogatari series yet.
Have not , doubt I will
@Goblin King not interested lol
I haven't even finished the video but this its already the GOAT for using Ridge Racer 4 music
"Arcade racers are a dying breed"
unless you want arcade racers inspired by Outrun and Synthwave, those had kind of a mini-boom recently.
id rather a rerelease of outrun 2 tbh
This movie is absolutely stunning. 1:25 they straight up used this scene as a reference for the Animatrix short World Record.
Instant like for the Ridge Racer soundtrack.
Wait... it just occurred to me that if it wasn't for having the extra weight of the bomb attached he'd have won without it.
physics need not apply in these situations
Great video. I hold Redline up as an animation technical masterpiece second only to Akira. since the moment i saw that extended intro scene on youtube a decade ago i knew the film was gonna be special. i really hope to see another ambitious project like this in my lifetime.
Ambitious projects come and go it's really depends on what your goal is in the end doesn't have to just be technical mechanisms, I imagine there's plenty to come with all manner of goals
Just wanted to say I appreciate the addition of the R4 soundtrack, made me stumble on one of the most underrated racing soundtracks
Mildly unrelated, can we get a tracklist for this video?? Perfectly curated!
that little clip to ad break is so neat that I actually watch the whole ad
very cool covering redline from Koike's point of view.

I cannot tell you how cool it was that you used the ridge racer type 4 intro song.
Dammit man i can't believe i once again failed for once of those "the problem with" click bait videos saying that there a problem with something that is perfect.
well there very much are problems but they arent as black and white as this bad, while underscored i think the misinformation and lore redline has built around itself is a big problem along with the other issue brought up
Sometime i fuel myself with the intro of the movie ! brings good mood for the day ! music is hard lashing your brain !!!
Imagine a REDLINE game in the graphic engine of Guilty Gear Strive......
I don't know if it would work from a Racer angle where the camera is always turning
woooow man thank you so much for going over all of this info!
@Slippy Frog i worded it wrong, but i actually really love the dub on this, and it will always be how i watch Redline
I remember seeing Redline in a basically empty movie theater in West Hollywood for a film festival in 2014 on a Saturday night.
A Redline game, huh? That is very very veryyyyyyyy interesting! xD
you can say that again
Go speed racer go.
Dude I LOVE redline and had no idea that Trava was a thing. Thanks!
Yo the Ridge Racer Type 4 opening music.
I recommend Renaissance 2054. Not a racing film but very French.
...and SPEED RACER... yes, the best. Love that flick.
speed racer, speed racer, speed racer!
I’ve showed Redline to my friend group at a party it’s everyone’s fav anime movie now.
